Drivers and the miniscript
Working in the early 1970s,
clinical psychologist Taibi
Kahler made an intriguing
discovery. He had followed
up Berne’s idea that the
script may be played out
over very short periods.
Drivers and the miniscript
Second by second, Kahlernoted his subjects words, tones, gestures, posturesand facial expressions. Hefound that there werecertain distinctive sets ofbehaviors which peopleconsistently showed justbefore they moved into anykind of scripty behavior orfeelings.
Drivers and the miniscript
Kahler and his coworkers
listed five of these second by
second behavior sequences.
They called them drivers.
Further study showed that
driver behavior was part of a
wider pattern which Kahler
called the miniscript.
Drivers and the miniscript
Miniscript is a sequence of
script behavior, feelings and
beliefs. It is played out over
a time scale ranging from a
few seconds to a few
minutes. Invariably, it begins
with one of the driver
behavior.
Drivers and the miniscript
Miniscript reproduces over a
short time period, the
process of the entire life
script. Each time I run
through my miniscript, I
reinforce my script process.
Whenever I step out of my
minscript pattern, I help
defuse my script process.
Drivers and the miniscript
The five drivers aredistinctively related to thesix process script types. Byobserving someone’s driverpatterns, you can predictreliably what her processscript will be. Thus bylearning how to detect thefive driver behavior, you cantell a lot about a person in ashort space of time.
Drivers and the miniscript
The five drivers are
–Be perfect.
–Please (Others).
– Try hard.
–Be strong.
–Hurry Up.
Drivers and the miniscript
Each of the five drivers is
signaled by a distinctive set
of words, tones, gestures,
postures and facial
expressions. You have
already learned to use these
clues in making a behavioral
diagnosis of ego states.
Drivers and the miniscript
In looking for driver behaviors,
you need to shrink your time
scale. Driver behaviors are
typically shown within half a
second to one second.
Observing within this short
time span takes some initial
practice if you are not used to
it. But it soon becomes second
nature.
Drivers and the miniscript
The caution “don’t
interpret” applies here, just
as it did when we were
discussing behavioral
diagnosis in general. Stay
with the behaviors you can
actually see and hear.
