Myth Busting Myth: All practice owners are entrepreneurs.

Fact: In truth, the vast majority of doctors and dentists that own their own practice are highly skilled technicians, drowning in business problems. This is NOT an Entrepreneur.

What is an “Entrepreneur” Really? “Entrepreneurs are leaders willing to take risk and exercise initiative, taking advantage of market opportunities by planning, organizing, and employing resources.” – Wikipedia

Key elements of an Entrepreneur:

•They perform as leaders and are perceived by others as such.

•Exercises initiative (Particularly on important matters that lead to sustainable prosperity).

•Takes advantage of market opportunities.

•Accomplishes all this through:

1.) Planning (strategic and tactical)

2.) Organizing (hiring, training, putting in business systems, etc.)

3.) Employing resources (people, budgets, joint ventures, marketing platforms, technology, etc.)

The Breakthrough The most important breakthrough is with any practice: To elevate the doctor/dentist above that as “practice owner who is a skilled technician” to one that also operates as an Entrepreneur - as previously defined. This we will refer to as a DrPRENEUR.

Plan for the Ideal &Accomplish that Plan “When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” - Confucius

Strategic planning is initiated for long-term growth and prosperity. The DrPreneur no longer works solely IN his business, but now begins to work ON the business.

Plans are put in writing, detailing the actions and tactics that will need to be initiated and accomplished over a stated period of time (3 months, 6 months or even a year).

Accountability is established with goals, dates, statistics and other means.

How Do We Begin the Transition to DrPreneur? You need to be truthful with yourself and determine HOWdo you want to live? (Professionally, family, finances, retirement, etc.)

You need to write this down as an ideal goal, covering all that is important to you.

Then you have to ask yourself, “In what condition would my practice have to be in to allow me to live like that?”

The plan is an application of reverse engineering. This is how we move you and your practice to where it is now, to where you want it to be at some moment in the future.

THE COMMON ACTIONS THAT ARE INITIATED BY A DrPRENEUR

Determine the goals specifically. (revenue, new patients signed up, how many hours the doctor/dentist will work, new staff added and where)

Set a time table on when you want these goals met.

List what marketing actions should be initiated to get the revenue higher.

Now determine what organizational actions will need to be instituted, such as schedule changes, staff training initiatives, hiring on more staff, adding additional treating doctors/dentists, offering a wider array of services, upgrading equipment, etc.

Set performance standards and keep track of them weekly/monthly so we can now see how we are making progress towards those goals.

Review and adjust the plans, actions or performance standards to ensure that they goals are being met.

How Not to Become OverwhelmedHire on an executive coach, consultant and/or marketing expert to help guide you through this process

Begin somewhere. “Rome was not built in day.”

Write daily “action plans” that will forward your overall plan in some way, regardless of how small.

Build a Team. (Staff, outside contractors, collaborations, etc.)

Reward yourself and your staff when they accomplish something important or noteworthy. “Accomplishment rewarded begets further accomplishment.”

Keep yourself well nourished, rested and inspired.
