Bad Hair Mountain POPTASTIC Housed within shipping containers outside Perth’s Cultural Centre on James Street in Northbridge, one might expect a new form of nightclub, or storage units for city construction. Instead, Popsicle is back is back for the 2010 Perth Fashion Festival and ready for another lick on the creative bums of some of Perth’s most talented emerging designers. Established as a temporary retail space, Popsicle runs from today until Wednesday 15 September, and acts as a platform for local designers to test their products in the marketplace and, in doing so, promote Perth’s local art community. With this year’s event set around a nautical inspired theme, we can look forward to seeing works from 15 designers, including Lonely 8-Bit Heroes, Kiss Me Quick, Little Gracie, Peppermint Milk, Bo Ra, Heart City Design, Bad Hair Mountain, White Square, Lovers & Dreamers, Leah Tarlo, Prufrock, Ping Pong Diplomacy, Love Is My Velocity, Kingbrown Magazine and Australia’s only magazine dedicated to roller derby, Hit & Miss Magazine. So if you feel like learning to tie some knots or some tips to smash it up at roller derby, head on down to Popsicle for a unique shopping experience. BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE GARMENTS It’s easy to get caught up in the hype of the runway shows during the week of the Perth Fashion Festival, and miss the exhibitions that allow a close-up view into the world of fashion and art. As one of the festival’s longer running events, The Beyond Garment Exhibition showcases 20 of our state’s most affluent designers in the fields of millinery, bags, jewellery and textile design. With designers including Elizabeth Delfs, Alister Yiap, Antipodium, Nalda Searles and Sophie Kyron, the exhibition questions typical notions of fashion, seeing designers create works that challenge the idea of garment and explore the medium of fashion as more of an art form rather than commercial entity. Curated by Anne Farren, the director of fashion design at Curtin University, she hopes the exhibition will force people to look beneath the surface of the traditional notions of fashion. “The work in the exhibition presents the viewer with everything from the familiar to the unexpected; from the commercial to the conceptual. It will challenge perceptions and understanding of the relationships between objects, materials and the body and their connections to dress and adornment.” The Beyond Garment Exhibition is a free exhibition running until Sunday 28 November at the Fremantle Maritime Museum. The label began in 2005 when studying fashion and textile design at Central TAFE. Along with Marianna Mazzurra, who has since left the label, the trio saw it as a natural progression to continue working together after graduating in 2004. One Fell Swoop was launched with an aesthetic that originated out of the satisfaction that the technique of fabric draping can produce. Six years on, the label is evolving and ready to be launched on a national level. What is your role in the Perth Fashion Festival this year? One Fell Swoop were selected to be a part of this year’s Collection #2 parade at Fashion Paramount. We are always excited and pleased to be involved in PFF. It is a great opportunity for the public to view Perth’s talent and an important way for us to connect and work with our peers in the industry. What was your inspiration for your upcoming collection? One Fell Swoop does not believe in a specific inspiration for a collection; instead we draw from a wide range of cultures and references to create modern, avant-garde pieces. Our work experiments with volume, form,

BRINGING DREAMS TO LIFE IS SOMETHING MANY DESIGNERS ARE EXPERIMENTING WITH IN THE CURRENT FASHION ENVIRONMENT. DIGITAL PRINTS AND THE PSYCHO-REAL HAVE BECOME INCREASINGLY EXPRESSED, AND JAIME LEE MAJOR EXPLAINS HOW SHE’S QUICKLY ESTABLISHING HER OWN ORIGINAL BRAND OF DESIGN THAT COMBINES ART AND FASHION.

After graduating from Central TAFE’s fashion and textile design course in 2008, Jaime Lee Major has come a long way in the space of two years. After launching her first collection ‘Out of Focus’ this year, she is one of three designers featured in the final Perth Fashion Festival Showcase ‘UP’. As well as being nominated for the festival’s Designer Of Tomorrow award, things are beginning to take off for this artist/designer.Your digital prints form the basis for your fabrics, would you say you are an artist turned designer? I’m probably just heavily influenced by art, and I think that’s one way to make it as original as possible because the starting point is from my own paintings, which are my textiles, and that way they are exclusive to my label. When did you realise fashion was going to be the right outlet for your artwork? It kind of goes hand in hand. It’s good because there are so many aspects creatively - like photography, sculpture, art, painting – but with fashion I get to combine all of them. It’s fulfilling when putting on a fashion show when I’m in charge of everything, from lighting to models, hair, makeup, the set etc.Do you prefer your work to be seen as fashion or wearable art? As fashion. Wearable art is a term that gets thrown around so much. Even though I have some statement pieces which are more couture pieces, it’s still fashion as it is still functional. You have been compared to designers such as Romance Was Born – what do you think sets you apart? I don’t collaborate with artists, and I am still trying to have one off pieces, but tone them down so the consumer can still have a special piece in a wearable way.

Blue Bird is not your average shop. A place where stuffed toads wearing top hats are used to display jewellery, and vintage clothing combined with pop culture kitsch is the ultimate flavour, the shop is a mix between the past and, well, mainly the past.Owned by Deborah Dickson and Steven Price, the store was opened five months ago on the main drag of Cambridge Street in Wembley (right near Flipside Burgers). They stock everything from vintage clothing and collectables to retro home wares, curios and accessories. “Steven and I have been collecting ever since he was in short pants and I was in an Adam & The Ants t-shirt, so I guess Bluebird is like an extension of our house, except

shape and fabric. Their work can be equally dark and playful. The somber colour palette centres around deep hues of black, greys and neutrals. What is the next step for label? We are in an exciting phase of the life of the label. We are redeveloping the label, in a way starting afresh. The next six months will see the identity of the label change. We hope that at the end of this period to have a new definition of our aesthetic, including changing our branding and logo, completing our website and seeing One Fell Swoop selling nationally. You can see One Fell Swoop on parade as part of the Perth Fashion Festival’s Designer Collection # 2 on Saturday 11 September at Fashion Paramount. Tickets $49 from moshtix.com.au.

What can we expect to see from you in Perth Fashion Festival’s UP showcase? I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s going to be crazy. It’s basically the campaign shoot I did with Thomas Kerr coming to life. What does the future have in store for you? The show at PFF, producing another collection and taking that to Rosemount fashion week in Sydney in May. I want to do show off site – not on schedule – and have my own show, that way I get to see out how I want to show the collection. The Perth Fashion Festival’s finale showcase ‘UP’ is on Tuesday 14 September at Fashion Paramount (Old Gasworks Building, Perth) and features Paper Sky, Joveeba and Jaime Lee. Tickets $49 from moshtix.com.au.

THE FABRIC OF A KILLER

you don’t have to knock and you can buy stuff from it! I’d use the word quirky if I didn’t think quirky was such a lame word,” explains Dickson. The shop has a cosy sort of feel about it. Spilling at the brim with all kinds of stuff, or in Debs words “junk”, to appeal to people of any age, shape or form. So if you are in the market for some vintage Ray Bans, weird kind-of creepy toys, crying children paintings, just general paintings, clocks, vintage jewellery and clothing, hats, bags, stuffed

animals, cowboy boots, leather jackets, general quirkiness or to meet Deb – and listen to her rave on about her romance of vintage clobber, give out “questionable fashion advice” (her words) – then Bluebird should be your next destination. If that still doesn’t appeal to you, take some earplugs and check out one of the coolest shops Perth has to offer.Bluebird Vintage is open from Tuesday ‘til Saturday 10am-5.30pm and is located at 288 Cambridge Street, Wembley. Ph: 9287 2768.

A SHAKESPEARIAN TERM, ‘ONE FELL SWOOP’ REFERRED TO AN ATTACK BY MACBETH’S AGENTS AND HAS SINCE BECOME A PHRASE THAT DEFINES A RAPID AND FIERCE ACTION. FOR DESIGNERS DANIEL ROMANIN AND NIKOLINA ERGIC, THEIR LABEL NAME WAS CREATED FROM NOT ONLY THE SAVAGE CONNOTATIONS, BUT ALSO THE IDEA THAT BEAUTY CAN BE BORN FROM TRAGEDY.
