DST Showcases Clean Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Outputs

Astana Expo 2017, Astana, Kazakhstan.

Science, Technology and Innovation Framework for Clean Energy in India aspires to accelerate the

pace of discovery and delivery of science led solutions through enhanced global cooperation and

public private partnership. The Ministry of Science and Technology has been focussing on human,

institutional and technology capacity for promoting novel ideas and cutting edge research both

fundamental and translational areas for affordable and accessible Clean Energy Innovations in the

area of Solar Energy, Energy Storage, Energy Efficiency, Cleaner fuels etc.

The Department of Science & Technology is showcasing its Five Working Models on Future Energy in the

India Pavilion. The models are exhibited in the India Pavilion for the visitors.

Solar sea water desalination & thermal storage unit

• Employing integrated technologies by using renewable resources such as solar, agro-waste biomass

and sea water.

• Innovative technology for the potential combined production of power and high purity water.

• First-of-its-kind demonstration project which can be replicated along the coastal and arid coastal

regions of India. These technologies can be replicated in various parts of the world where there is

acute water shortage near the coast.

• Effective utilization of expanded steam from the turbine can greatly improves the economy of the

system.

• The algae are processed to yield protein nutrients transportation fuel.

• Brine reject from the desalination system can be directly discharged into the sea without affecting the

local ecology. No harmful chemicals are used. The system is maintenance-friendly.

• Solar and agro-biomass based energy generation for electrical power and sea water desalination is a

good choice for an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution utilizing renewable energy.

Shallow emitter silicon solar cell (high efficiency >18%) and modules process technology

• Lightly doped emitter by optimizing various process steps using new front metal contact pastes &

shallow emitter adopting standard manufacturing steps without any additional process steps.

• Best cell efficiency of 19.24% achieved with typical efficiency distribution of 19% for a few batches of

solar cells.

• Solar cell efficiency achieved commercially at the commencement of project by BHEL was 17%. That

was raised to 18.75% in commercial manufacturing facility of Electronic Division (EDN), BHEL at

Bangalore.

Surya Jyoti - Micro Solar Dome

• A lighting device based on active and passive solar technique.

• Suitable to install in any type of roof (Asbestos, Galvanized corrugated iron Sheet, Mud tiles or

concrete).

• Safe and hygienic lighting solution for urban and rural poor.

• Zero CO2 emission lighting device.

• Low cost and long life.

• Provides continuous 16-hour light in a day/night.

• Easy to fabricate, fix and maintain.

• High potential of employment generation.

• Solar PV - 2 X 3 watt crystalline Solar Panel suitable for charging of 7.5 Ah, 4-volt Lithium Ion battery.

• Battery - 2 X 3.7 Ah Lithium Ion Battery.

• LED - 3 X 1 watt LEDs mounted on the Lower part of sun tube.
