DOG of the MONTHHoliday House Pet Resort is proudto offer every dtown Dog of theMonth 2 nights of free lodgingand a premium bath.As in writers block. Its quite the new phenomenon to me.So new, in fact, that I had to Google it just to feel productiveafter about 45 minutes of staring at a blank Word doc. (In the interest of full disclosure, SportsCenter and Ancient Aliensdid have some of my attention through the process.) One ofthe Web sites I landed on suggested you simply write anything. So here I am, following sage advice found on the internet. While it seems to be working in a sense, I fnd it strangely ironic and perhaps a bit clich that Im writing about theinability to write. Im pretty sure this is one of those moments that the astro-physicists on the late-night shows that tryto explain quantum mechanics in laymans terms I faithfully watch where the universe folds itself into a neat little boxand starts anew. Or maybe, as its already 2012, this is what the Mayans were talking about. By the time an artist like Bruce Springsteen or John Mellencamp puts out their frst album, their few if any years of trudging through a forty-hour work-week are long behind them. Of course, if an artist is good, the exact creden-tials dont really matter. But when the proverbial work bell and utility bills govern a songwriters day rather than studio time and tour busses, theyre singing with a different kind of soul. On the fence between clock-puncher and troubadour sits Jared Costa. Hes releasing his second album this month; its mostly a solo effort featuring Costa on guitar, piano and harmonica andthe newly found passion in his voice. Jared CostaArt and Labor, Work and Play Theres solace in cominghome to a guitar after a rough day. Being able to drown my sorrows in an instrumentis great. Jared CostaThe occasional neo-folk fourish pushes him toward fellow Bucks County-native Langhorne Slim but with muscular strums and heartfelt, straight-ahead vocals. Ultimately, Costa can be described as a down-to-earth singer-songwriter.Aptly named This Dizzying Pace and the Aftermath, Costas new album refects how he found his voice and settled back into life after releasinghis 2009 debut. Right after that album came out was a really exciting but turbulent time, Costa recalls. Id be up all night playing shows, getting up early for work and then rushing home to practice for a festival performance that weekend.Once things calmed down, he says, Costa found everything he was looking for: I think I truly developed my voice after that. Up until then, I was doingan impression of what I thoughtI should sing like. Now I can feel it 18/MUSIC/JANUARY 2012coming from the depths of what Im feeling. Every time Im singing, Im celebrating now instead. As he did after his debut, hell tour for a few weeks at a time this year, barn-storming college campuses, festivals and clubs along the East Coast andtoward the Midwest. Radio play has been picking up in Washington and Oregon; his frst cross-country trekmay not be far off. And, in between each jaunt, hell return to work. I fnd labor whereverI can get it and work as many hoursI can, so I can go back out on tour later. Then I get as many guaranteed paid shows as I can and eat a lot of peanut-butter sandwiches on the road,he laughs. Costas songs dont overtly embrace this blue-collar persona, but his wayof life shines through in the spiritof the songs. And in his overreachingapproach to music. Hes neither a heartland rocker nor a dreamer hoping to break out of the drudgery. Rather, music and work complement each other. I lumber through jobs to make ends meet, but theres solace incoming home to a guitar after a rough day. Being able to drown my sorrows in an instrument is great, Costa says. Work also keeps him from getting burned out on the road. My longest tour was 30 cities in six weeks, and Ive seen other musicians get cynical and jaded from doing that over and over again, Costa continues. ButI get to go back home, see my friends and work some more. Its not my whole life, so I appreciate getting to go out and play music every time I do it.And while the path the stardom can be a twisted and tormenting journey, Costa seems content in the niche hes carved for himself. Honestly, if I hada choice, Id probably wish to followa career thats more conducive toa quicker payoff, but if anythingsa close second, its music. Its justwhat I do, Costa says. When Im done work, I play my guitar. Sometimes, I come home at the end of the day and think, What do people do if they dont play music? Do they watch TV or something? I really dont know any different. But the new hair- accessories company is doing just fne without a traditional brick-and-sticks location. Especially when you consider that that burgeoning business started almost by accident. When friends and co-owners Kimberly Metallo and Joanna Quigley began making their one-of-a-kind handmade hairpieces and simply giving them to friends, they suddenly found their designs in high demand. I started making fowers that fastened into your hair with a clip, Metallo recalls. The pieces were gorgeous. They made such a statement. Soon, so many people were asking us to make more.Realizing they had a potential hit on their hands, Metallo and Quigley, working from the home they share in Doylestown, took the frst steps in moving from hobbyists to entrepreneurs. And while interesting designs and expanding their line were on the forefront of their minds, they also needed a brand. Drawing inspiration from both family and the past, TwentyTwentySeven was born. We choose the name in honor of our mothers, who we both lost at a young age: Dale Metallo, born April 20, and Nadia Quigley, born Nov. 27, Quigley explains. Their memory continues to inspire us to succeed, so it seemed like a ftting tribute.Since August, Metallo and Quigley have expanded their line of accessories to include feathers, halos and knits. Our halos are pieces that tie horizontallyacross the forehead, Metallo says. We like to take our larger, more-Kim models an antique fower with a birdcage veil.24/BUSINESS/JANUARY 2012detailed pieces and attach them to braided leather cording or foral wire wrapped tightly in a soft yarn. We refer to these as our hippie halos. Our crowns are a collection of small fowers woven into an organic-looking wreath. These pieces sit atop the head and make a big statement with a long fowing dress. And with a new sewing machine in the craftroom, were starting to produce fabric headwear, such as earwarmers and turbands, featuringwide bands made from patternedfabrics that sit across the foreheadand ears and button in the back. The duo also recently fnished their frst wedding veil. We are 100 percent open to making custom pieces,Quigley adds. Most cost between$10 and $35, and made-to-order pieces are ready in under a week. And while Metallo and Quigleys creative possibilities are seemingly ever-expanding, their craftsmanshipis growing right along with their ideas. Were infusing more care than ever into the production of our original pieces, Quigley says. We seek out unique fabric fowers and pair them with beads and jewels from antique and consignment shops. Everythingis frmly hand sewn and attached toa clip or headband for easy wear. Aside from fowers, which are our bread and butter, were starting to experiment with pieces using different mediums. I just fnished a crown that was made from interlocking strands of pearls with silver and bronze chains woven throughout.Even if the absence of a storefront might seem to hamper their visibility, Metallo and Quigley have embraced both technology and old-fashioned networking as a means to get their wares in the public eye. Our Facebook page is the biggest thing we started, Metallo says. I like being able to make a piece and immediately put it up on the site. Within 24 hours, we have people ordering it. TwentyTwentySeven can also be found on Etsy.com, an online marketplace featuring primarily handcrafted goods. Most of our orders come through Facebook, but the Etsy shop lists our current collection, along with photos and prices, Quigley adds. In slightly less virtual spaces, Metallo and Quigley have found one of the best ways to advertise their designs is by modeling them as partof their everyday wardrobes. Both work as bartenders and say theyre able to gain visibility by wearing samples to work. There is no better way to sell one of our pieces than having potential buyers see it in the context of an outft, Quigley explains. When you are wearing something unique and making it work, people want to know how they can get one of their own. Besides, part of our philosophy in making these piecesis to show women of all ages that its ok to be bold and stand out. But sometimes it takesan outsiders eye to remind us of theinherent beauty of the cities, towns and communities we call home. Just ask Mustafa Lamaj.A rising star on the local art scene, the Albanian-born artists work captures the city the way he sees it: full of life, vigor and opportunity. Lamajs canvas transforms the gray, gritty and crowded into structured, colorful forms that resonate with invitation rather than apprehension. I am fascinated by the geometric structure of the city, the way the buildings ft and refect to each other, he explains, recounting part of his inspiration for the creation of a series of paintings in Philadelphia hes dubbed City Structures. Its in the way the buildings expand to the sky and the sky to the buildings. It all creates a fascinating, unique and gigantic structure. And while Lamajs view of his adopted home, too often beset by tales of violence and human indifference, may seem overly optimistic, it is perhaps BY JUSTIN ELSON PHOTOS COURTESY OF MUSTAFA LAMAJMustafa LamajFrom Turmoil an Artist Emergesbest understood by refecting on his past. For as vivid as Lamajs workis, his life eclipses even his craft.Born during the reign of one of themost-oppressive regimes of the Eastern-European communist bloc, Lamaj quickly learned that personal and artistic freedoms were hardly guarantees. I started showing my work with professional artists, he recalls, but my colorful and bright paintings started losing their light and became dark and depressive. Working within a system that endorsed socialist realism as the only acceptable means of self-expression, Lamaj quickly became both an outcast and a target. Art was supposed to serve politics, only optimist art with strong and happy people was considered legal, he continues. One day, I was warned by the local government that I had to stop doing dark paintings. It was the last show I had in Albania. ARTIST/27 I escaped Albania in 1990 with only a few dollars in my pocket and a bunch of paintings, dreaming for the free world. Mustafa Lamaj28/ARTIST/JANUARY 2012Like the denouement of a Hollywood script, Lamaj made a daring leap in an attempt to spread his creative wings. I escaped Albania in 1990 with onlya few dollars in my pocket and a bunch of paintings, dreaming for the free world, he says. Facing persecution from political enemies and threats to his familys safety, Lamaj fed to nearby Italy. But as democratic protests spread among the despotic communist strongholds during the 1990s, Albanias rulers abdicated power in 1992. Lamaj, having spent six years in exile, fnally returned home in 1996. However, his homecoming would not last long. As former communist leaders and democratic reformers struggled for control of the country amid a crumbling ARTIST/29 government, Lamaj was again caught between politics and his artistic ideals. By 1997, the protests had turned violent. Near my hometown of Vlora, many residents were fghting with weapons looted from the local army barracks, Lamaj recalls. My lifewas in danger. Armed again with only his work, vision and dreams of securing his artistic liberties, Lamaj sought political asylum in the U.S.and was granted safe harbor.Landing in Philadelphia, a townsometimes not known for its hospitality, Lamaj has thrived. His style born of turmoil, struggle and persecution is refective of the currents that underlie the East Coasts urban centers in a way that only a man forced to confront both a spiritual lightness and foreboding can render. And since he began exhibiting regularly, local art authorities have taken notice. The gritty streets provide him with ideal material for his sense of composition and light, says Lorraine Riesenbach, director of the Artists House Gallery in Old City. His application of paint is wonderfully fuid and quite textural. And its the urban infuences that continue to resonate in the artists own struggle to fnd the source of his inspiration. When I paint something, its really just a point of departure, Lamaj says, refecting on his sometimes artistic uncertainty, But what Im creating is the struggle to pull away from a dark and uncertain conscious.I fell out of the light when I lived ina dark era, but now that Ive found it, Im painting it again. In the Pocket was inspired by my move back to Philly two years ago, he says. I started refecting on the music that came out of city and all the incredible musicians that still reside here. I thought it would be fun to pay homage to the songs that were essential to me as I was growing up. Joining Uosikkinen in the band is a slew of other local heavyweights, including Tommy Conwell, Charlie and Richie Ingui of the Soul Survivors, Richard Bush of the As and the Peace Creeps and TJ Tindall, former Gamble and Huff guitarist. The show also serves as both a long overdue reunion and frst of sorts. We were in our frst group together at 15. And while the pair stayed in touch over the years, jammed at times and had music take each around the globe, perhaps incredibly, theyve never shared the same bill. Its 43 years in the making, Danaher adds. So its really quite exceptional to me. And for Uosikkinen, its both the opportunity to join an old friend and support a community he feels a kinship with. I grew up in Bucks County and spent a lot of time in New Hope, he says. Doing this beneft for the Winter Festival is a great way to give back to a community that is very special to me. While the concert will serve as the festivals centerpiece, the weekend-long Lambertville-New Hope Winter Festival will also feature food, ranging from a tasting featuring some of the areas fnest restauraunts to the chili cook-off. Family-friendly activities, such as the annual parade and winter-themed folk art and crafts, and special events, like the roast of Larry Young and the Fire and Ice Ball, will also be held throughout the event. And once through the arcade, the water park awaits. Sahara Sams largest attraction, Timbuktu, towers above the dcor. It features two large slides that twist around the entire structure, Lang Stafferi explains. Theres a spot where a big bucket flls with water and spills down on visitors. Theres other areas where you can shoot different water cannons on the structure. And while Sahara Sams offers the chance for kids to have some wet-and-wild winter fun, ultimately, Lang Stafferi says, its a place for families to bond. Live Music Friday and Saturday nights, 9pm-1am 46/COMMUNITY/JANUARY 2012For three hours every week, dozensof elderly residents at Neshaminy Manor forget what life is supposed to be like in a retirement home and think only of art. The facilitys community rooms become studios, and its inhabitants transform into young students of pottery and painting. Pencils, tools and minds are sharpened. Its enriching their lives, says Susan Roseman, one of the founders of Arts for the Manor,a nonproft organization that holdsand organizes art classes at the residence. Nursing homes are for the living, not for the dying. Its their home, and they need things like art.Roseman says that the organization brings in around 15 area artists a year to teach a range of classes, weekly BY KYLE BAGENSTOSEPHOTOS COURTESY OF SUSAN ROSEMANIn Experienced HandsArt as Therapy and Inspirationtwo-hour sessions in the regular unit and an additional hour-long sitting for dementia patients. The artists get paid, and the residents forget theyrein a nursing home for a couple of hours, Roseman says. Residents are seated in a horseshoe formation and are immediately given pencil and paper to get their juices fowing while the visiting artist sets up. We actually have a woman in the dementia unit that used to be a high-school art teacher, and we bring her out of that unit, she adds. Its kind of an incredible thingto see. We have about 15 percent ofthe residents at the classes, and thats 15 percent that arent vegging outor bugging the nurses.Classes run the gamut from paper and printmaking to sculpting and painting. A crowd favorite is the clay class taught by Katia McGuirk, renowned for her artisanal textiles and the creative force behind Residents of the Neshaminy Manor Retirement Home use art as a means of self-expression and self-realization.COMMUNITY/47 48/COMMUNITY/JANUARY 2012Doylestowns Star Garden mosaic. The residents are actually making tiles that will go into a mural thatll be in the Manors gardens, Roseman says. In one of the classes, they had to write down a memory on one ofthe tiles, so its also therapeutic. And while art can certainly serve as both a physical and mental boost, Roseman says that many of the residents dont just enjoy the change of pace but also display signifcant abilities. Weve turned some of them into actual artists; they have a style, she notes. You go into some of the residents rooms and their artworkis all over, from foor to ceiling.Part of the programs success can be directly attributed to Rosemans passion and dedication. You might even say the organization was born of her commitment to helping the elderly. Prior to Arts for the Manors formation, Roseman would often bring her two dogs to the home and visit with residents to simply help liven up their day. My husband would sometimes come with me, and he would sit there and draw portraits, she recalls. All of the sudden, there would be 30 people around watching.I thought, there are artists in residence at the public schools, why not artistsin residence at the nursing homes?Pursuing her inspiration and desire to make a difference in the lives of others, Roseman began to shop the idea of bringing artists in to teach classes. The dream soon becamea reality when a friend provided the seed money to give the program legs. A friend of mine had a relative at the nursing home who passed away and felt very strongly that he was well taken care of by the staff, Roseman says. She donated $5,000 to getus started.Roseman says that the organization which has since expanded into the Foundation at the Manor, an initiative of enrichment programs designedto further connect residents with the local arts scene is now sustained bya collection of grants and fundraisers. She believes it is essential to give the residents a sense of freedom and self-confdence. No one is telling them what to create, Roseman says. Theyre creating what they want to. Theres also the socialization. And theyre not thinking about the nursing home, theyre thinking in the moment. The topic of countless books, articles and movies already, a cultural food of potential end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it scenarios have already been attributed to a calendar glitch. Even former-Phillie great Darren Daulton can be counted among the believers. 2012 has come, and the end of days is nigh. Though I hardly like to think of myself as a naysayer, it should be noted apocalyptic prophecies have come before and, most likely, will come again. Many events, not just a calendric anomaly, have spawned mass hysterias, whether an exploding volcano in Iceland in 1781, a Vatican prediction in the 1830s or a potential computer malfunction that had us wrapping ourselves in duct tape and drinking bottled water as recentlyas 1999. The historical record is flled with such moments. So far as I know, each of these has proved somewhat premature.BY ADAM PAULUSThe End is NearThe Mayan prophecy is the latest fashionable entry in a long list of upcoming ends. Its perhaps attractive because of its Native- American origins, lending it a special folkloric spirituality, an inexplicable shamanism versus your run-of-the-mill religious zealotry. Unfortunately, its not exactly what the ancient Mayans were getting at. Dec. 21st, 2012, the winter solstice, was the end of the Mayan Long Count, when they reset the calendar to zero after approximately 5,126 years. They never said it marked the end of all days, just the end of a cycle of time, anopportunity wed all like sometimes to hit the restart button. But that reality doesnt help us make awesome disaster ficks like 2012, so we, at times, tend to overdramatize.Perhaps part of our problem is that many of our perceptions stem froma fundamental misinterpretation of our indigenous predecessors. The genesis ofour understanding of native culturesThe Real Lesson of the ComingMayan ApocalypseA CLOSER LOOK/51 is a stereotype based largely on the cultural revolution of the late Sixties. Multifarious interests, utopian societies, back-to-nature movements, womens rights efforts, civil rights activists and anti-war protestors all were interested in what Native Americans had to teach us. The 1960s also gave rise to the frst generation to challenge the idea of American exceptionalism a word in political vogue these days that doesnt exist in my spell check. And in looking back through time, these varying sub-movements could point to a historical model of liberalism already grounded frmly in the Americas. The womens movement could look to the matrilineal nature of Indian cultures or that women held all property rights in perpetuity. The Civil Rights Movement could point to the Seminole and Cherokee Nations and note how these tribes assimilated with escaped slaves. Utopian societies could fnd much to learn from the shared usufruct rights of many tribes. And the anti-war movement could fnd numerous parallels between the long-running Indian wars our country fought and, at the time, the current war being waged in Vietnam. These varying factors created a new synthesis of thought regarding Native-American life, providing an important antithesis to the long-established cartoonish and racist stereotypes perpetuated in Gary Cooper and John Wayne matinees. However, in remaking the image, a new typecast was forged: the eco-friendly spirit-warrior. For those that can remember, think back to the famous Crying Indian commercial of the 1970s, starring the Sicilian-American actor Espera Oscar di Corti, to understand where this image derives. But neither stereotype fts the historical Maya. In reality, the Mayans and others were much more akin to their European and Asian cultural peers than most of us would ever imagine. To assume otherwise, that Indians lived in perfect symbiosis with the environs around them, would be, in essence, to deny their natural humanity or, as scientists would say, to deny them agency. Its perhaps attractive becauseof its Native-American origins, lending it a special folkloric spirituality, aninexplicable shamanism versus your run-of-the-mill religious zealotry. For better or worse, living in symbiotic harmony with nature has never beena human trait.Another misconception surrounding the indigenous people, particularly those living in modern-day Mexico, was the sheer scope of their populations. Just prior to European contact, the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan boasted the largest population of any city in the world, somewhere between 350,000 and 500,000 inhabitants. But with the introduction of foreign-born diseases, some killing upwards of 90 percent in areas,a pandemic was unleashed that has yetto be equaled in all human history. Bythe time the conquistadors such as Cortezand Pizarro arrived in the Americas, the crisis had created political power vacuums and mass social upheaval. Travel a bit south to the Mayan strongholds and one would hardly fnd a loose fealtyof fshing and farming villages, but rather a massive body politic, including hundreds of city-states and a population of millions. Adapting to growth on this level, the Mayansdeveloped ways to improve agriculturaleffciency by altering the natural world around them, instituting mass irrigation programs and industrialized terrace farming. To maintain such a vast and complex society as the Mayans had developed by 900 A.D. necessitated massive political coordinationI BOBBYS215.340.1414 | 52 E. State Street Doylestownwww.ILoveBobbys.comto organize vast public works such as reservoirs, crop maintenance and the expansion of arable lands, not to mention a hemispheric economic trading network. Unfortunately, civil war between two large southern city-states brought an end tothe mutual cooperation needed to maintain this complex, swelling and delicatelybalanced society. The Mayan end was partially a result of massive deforestation, a byproduct of expanding agricultural needs and a wealth of growing energy demands. Deforestationled to salinized runoff, toxifying the water supply. Combined with a sustained drought, the reconfgured environment could not sustain itself. Internecine confictdenied the principality the economicability to rebuild failing agricultural zones. Combined with the overhunting of mega-fauna and destruction of their habitat, food became increasingly scarce. This, of course, does not jive with our perception of Native Americans, but these populations were indeed victims of massive environmental collapse. The areas the Maya populated in the Yucatan, a limestone peninsula, could never sustain such large populations. The Mayans, thus, become a cautionary tale of the dangers of environmental hubris. The actual lessons of the Mayans have nothing to do with doomsday predictions, but rather the dangers of reshaping the world around us to meet our temporal needs, a sort of laissez-faire tunnel vision. So the question remains: Is it possible fora modern country to bankrupt its resources due to war while simultaneously poisoning its environment to the point of instability? It seems less far-fetched than believing that a calendar developed roughly 3,000 years ago could pinpoint a day for the end of all time. So those who warn of the 2012 prophecy, take them with a grain of salt from a salinized water supply. And as this year inevitably becomes the next, the skeptic in me will eagerly be awaiting the next coming apocalypse. Some take technique and skill into consideration. Others believe that creativity and beauty is a must. For Doug Reasoner, he believes his work falls into all of these categories. But Reasoner doesnt dabble in oils and acrylics; his medium of choice is sugar, four, eggs and the freshest ingredients he can get his hands on.A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and owner of Dougs Cakes, Reasoners interests werent always just sugar and spice. I was a cheffor several years, he says. In 1982,I came in contact with a Swedish pastry chef, who did things a little differently. I combined some of his technique with my own expertise and started making my own cakes. Eventually moving from behind the line and into restaurant- equipment sales, Reasoner baked on his own time. But what started asBY INGRID WEIDMANPHOTOS BY WENDY MCCARDLE AND COURTESY OF DOUG REASONERDougs CakesTasty Temptations for Your Taste Budsa hobby eventually caught the attention of everyone who tried his desserts. People everywhere started saying, These are great. Why dont you sell them? Reasoner explains. After 30 years, I opened Dougs Cakes. And with the tools of his trade instantly at his disposal, Reasonerhas designed a menu, which offers his three premier dessert creations in a variety of favors. Split between Reasoners signature cakes, cupcakes, and Dougs Puffs, its nearly too much for anyone with a sweet tooth to pass up. Cakes come in a variety of favors, including the vanilla rum with fresh fruit, a four-layered creation witha rum-cream icing and strawberries, kiwis, mandarin oranges and almonds, fnished with an apricot glaze. Another favorite is the baked Alaska, two yellow-cake layers with hazelnut-liqueur vanilla icing, hazelnut-liqueur ice cream and chopped toasted FOOD & DINING/57 hazelnuts, fnished with a golden-brown meringue topping. I came up with my own icing, where most of my favoring or liqueur for the product can be found. The favors are never overbearing, Reasoner says. I use heavy cream, egg whites and other high-quality ingredients in my baking. There is almost no butter in any of my products. Thats what makes them better and different. And when it comes to a cake with liqueur, I also brush the liqueur on the cake, as well as use it in the icing. It really seals in the favor. He also offers a Napoleon cake, featuring four layers of puff pastry flled with vanilla-rum crme and topped with fresh fruit anda drizzle of melted white chocolate. When it comes to cupcakes, you might as well just call them Dougs mini cakes. You take a cupcake; theyre all the same, Reasoner says. Mine have a flling and are double-iced. They are available in all the same favors as my cakes and are 50 to 75 percent bigger than my competitors. And Ive never had anyone tell me they had a dry product. Some of Reasoners most popular cupcakes are the chocolate peanut-butter cup with chocolate icing and real peanut-butter flling, and the chocolate coffee liqueur with chopped I always want to make sure the favors are unique. Reasoners version of crme puffs, or Dougs puffs, is soft pastry shells flled with your choice of favored mousse, dipped in white or dark chocolate and topped with shaved chocolate or a variety of nuts. After years of producing someof the areas best cakes, Reasoners reputation is growing. It has takena few years to get the word out, but my business is expanding, he says. In addition to his normal fow of orders, Reasoner is prepared for any special event that might need an extraordinary dessert. All were welcomed except Cal. Because already living in the house was my husbands cat, Eve. As in the frst. The fur-fying fghts stopped after about six months. The need for two sets of bowls and two litter pans placed strategically around the house ended after about a year. Now they often accompany each other to eat or pee, waiting before taking a turn, for surveillance purposes, perhaps in tolerance but defnitely not with fondness. Especially with the last frontier continuing to be our bed. Eve had been accustomed to sleeping in the big room upstairs with the man, and Cal had been used to the big cat bed the lady likes to sleep on too. Both felt they had territorial rights, which meant nights jolted awake to an ear-piercing Rowwwww! This had been life in our two-cat house until last week, when we moved my great-Aunt Bettysscalloped-edge Queen Ann end table out of the corner of the living room and into the dining room in preparation for the delivery of our wood stove. They propelled and plummeted themselves from sofa to chairs to foor, the pads of their feet barely making contact with a surface as they whipped and bounced and few around the room.
