LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORSGeva Theatre Center Opening on January 13 and running through February 15 on the Mainstage at the Geva Theatre Center, 75 Woodbury Blvd., is the ever-popular musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Directed by Sean Daniels, the show follows a hap-less skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation – and gets the girl of his dreams – when he discovers an exotic man-eating pant. The charming and tuneful family musical blends doo-wop, rock and Motown into an affectionate cult classic send-up of B-movie horror flicks and the American Dream. Call (585) 232-GEVA.

Do Your New Year’s Resolutions Include Craft Beer?by Mark Tichenor

It’s the most tedious time of the year. You’ve all made your resolu-tions, most of which undoubtedly involve excising from daily life everything that brings joy, com-fort, or a sense of well-being. For a great many of you, this means pledging to give up craft beer. Here’s some good news: your resolve, while admirable, may be a tad misplaced. If you edit your resolutions a bit to include exercise, moderation, and general dietary good sense, it shouldn’t be a problem to keep enjoying real beer, not those ‘light’ or weird laboratory-engineered carb-reduced liquids. (A quick disclaimer. Yes, I real-ize this is not true for everybody and some people have serious medical or addictive issues that need to be more acutely dealt with. None of this is meant as medical advice.) We think of our virtues and our vices as absolutes, and come up with crazy notions of abandoning all food except kale, all drink except water, and all fun in favor of Crossfit. After three days of starving, puking, and being sober enough to get pissed off about it, it’s back on the couch with a bowl of tortilla chips and a queso I.V. In short, blaming your pleasures, and shaming yourself for them, is not the way to effect the positive change you want in your life. “I don’t think having a healthy lifestyle means it can’t include beer” says Jayda Cooke, a Diatetic Intern at Keene State College in New Hampshire. “It’s an un-necessary source of calories, but everyone has around 250 calories a day that you could do whatever you want with.” Cooke cautions that this as-sumes you are sticking to a healthy eating plan that includes lots of fruits and vegetables, and limits the amount of processed foods you put in your body. She also explains the importance of moderation, defined as one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for the male of the species.

sports& RECREATION

Unsurprisingly, exercise helps too. In fact many endurance athletes view a good beer as the treat at the end of their workout, but it’s important to know the amount of calories you’re expend-ing as well as taking in. “I train with a heart rate moni-tor, so I have an accurate count of how many calories I burn,” says Alex Tong, a masochistic psycho Iron Man Triathalete and ultra-marathon runner. “In an hour of biking, I might burn 640 calories, so the first couple of beers are guilt-free. If you cut out all the things you enjoy in life ,

you ’ re going to be one miserable bastard.” It’s also important to realize that, while the standard mass-market beer has around 150 calo-ries in a 12 ounce bottle, many craft beers pack in far more than that. High-gravity, high-alcohol beer styles, like barleywines or Double IPAs tend to pack the calories in. The same size bottle of Bell’s Two-Hearted Double IPA contains 210 of them, and a 12 ounce bottle of Great Lakes Lake

Erie Monster Ale comes in at a whopping 321 calories, which means a lot more time on that damn elliptical trainer thing is necessary to make up the differ-ence. Conversely, some craft beers can offer a ton of f lavor with fewer calories than you’d think. Look toward stouts and porters (not those labeled “Imperial” though) with sub 5.5% abv con-tent for satisfaction without crushing your daily calorie plan. Sly Fox O’Reilly’s stout, a thick brew brimming with complex flavor, comes in at a mere 108

estimated calories per 12 ounces . By

comparison, A standard bot-tle of “light” b e e r h a s about 110 calories. So do y o u r r e -search at the bar. Whip o u t t h a t s c h m a n c y smartphone and google t h e a m o u t of calories in the beer you’re about to select in order to keep a sensible tally of a pleasure that doesn’t have to be guilty unless you want it to be. Life, hope-fu l l y, i s l ong enough for small changes in rou-t ine to del iver big results in the long run. Maybe, if we spent more time being happier with our long term achievements in-stead of expecting to get there in 90

days, we’d live hap-pier lives, with better

self images along the way. And it’s been my experience

that few things improve the qual-ity of one’s day like a fine craft beer.

and from the movie wizards who made it happen.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL Who knew that Ralph Fiennes could be so funny? I mean, he’s Voldemort! But in Wes Ander-son’s sweet and daffy homage to the old-fashioned holiday resorts of Europe, and that whole way of life, he plays a popular and resourceful concierge who becomes a mentor to a lobby boy-in-training, and gets involved in finding out the true ownership of a supposedly priceless painting. Slapstick galore, some stunningly original characters, a great color palette, and lots of yummy pas-tries.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Now this is what an outer space epic should be! Visual effects are state of the art and beyond; the scope of the story is breathtak-ingly immeasurable; it’s easy to tell the difference between the heroes and the villains (though sometimes it seems that the main hero is in it only for himself); and the act of saving the universe has never before been such a big ball of fun.

THE IMITATION GAME The true story of British math-ematician Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) who, along with a brainy team working for the government, broke the code of the infamous German Enigma machine, thereby shortening WWII by a couple of years. The film plays out like a ticking-clock mystery, and has remarkable performances by Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley (a woman, work-ing with men in the’40s!), and their boss Charles Dance.

INHERENT VICE If you have a taste for the films of Paul Thomas Anderson (think Boogie Nights and Magnolia) and for film noir set in Los Angeles, and if you get what Joaquin Phoenix is all about, this is one

his résumé (Michael Keaton) is floundering, and in need of a ca-reer revival. He decides to do it on the Broadway stage, even though his fans still want him to get back to the superhero of the film’s title. This study of the guy trying to regain his dignity is sharply writ-ten, magnificently acted (just give the Oscar to Keaton), extremely serious, and darkly funny. Some of the best camera work of the year.

BOYHOOD Richard Linklater filmed the same actors, who kept coming back for a brief annual shoot,

AMERICAN SNIPER Clint Eastwood’s newest go at directing is one of his best in years. Based on the true story of Navy SEAL sharpshooter Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper in a superb performance), who was the best at what he did on the battlegrounds of Iraq, it’s an ex-ploration of what it means to be a hero, and the tremendous cost that comes with it. A real nail biter, and a great (non-political!) war film.

BIRDMAN A former action movie actor with a successful franchise on

over a pe-riod of 12 y e a r s , i n t h i s sprawling drama. We get to see little Ellar Coltrane grow up to be a young man. But b e y o n d tha t d e -vice is the t e r r i f i c stories of the people a r o u n d h im, e s -p e c i a l l y

the ones of his mom (Patricia Arquette) who has nothing but trouble in finding love, and of his dad (Ethan Hawke), a ne’er-do-well guy who keeps trying to do the right thing. A beautiful movie.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Its predecessor, Rise of the Plan-et of the Apes, was an excellent prequel to the series of Apes films from the ’60s and ’70s. Dawn is as good a sequel to Rise as Aliens and Terminator 2 were to Alien and The Terminator. With most of the human race wiped out in

a plague, apes are crea ting an idyl -l i c a n d peaceful l i f e i n the for -ests. Un-t i l , tha t is, some h u m a n survivors get in the way. A tri-umph in mot ion -c a p t u re a c t i n g by Andy S e r k i s

I’m happy to report that 2014 was a year with lots of great movies, a large number of pretty darn good ones, and just a few stinkers (the only one I wished I had skipped was the execrable Under the Skin). So it was tough to narrow the approximately 160 films I saw down to a mere Top 10. In fact, I couldn’t do it. So here, alphabetically, is my Top 15.

for you to see. It’s a private eye mystery about drugs and dollars and dames, one that goes off in about as many tangents as you can imagine. Set in 1970, it has a cop (Josh Brolin) who hates hip-pies (Phoenix is a kind of hippie P.I.) and a swirling set of charac-ters and stories, all of which are fun, some of which actually make sense.

THE LEGO MOVIE Inspired insanity as far as the storyline (an unassuming Every-man must save the world), and a groundbreaker in imaginative visual effects (all CGI, not stop-motion). It’s also the funniest movie of the year, with jokes and visuals that will delight the youngest of audiences, and pop culture references that will make adult viewers actually guffaw. Best cameos: Michelangelo the artist and Michelangelo the Ninja Turtle.

her young, wild sister (Mia Wasi kowska), w h o q u i c k l y and blood-ily messes up the i r p e r f e c t situation. M o o d y and acces-sible film-m a k i n g from Jim Jarmusch.

THE RAID 2 The In-donesian-made sequel to the 2011 original, both by Welsh writer-director Ga-reth Evans was the most violent, action-packed film of the year, yet remained remarkably entertain-

ing all the way through. Never mind the good cops and bad cops, and father-son relationships with-in crime families. The thing t o a p -precia te h e re i s the fight c h o r e -ography and daz-z l i n g edi t ing. C a t c h it some-t i m e w h e n y o u ’ r e pumped w i t h ad rena -line.

TUSK A mad scientist in Canada (Mi-chael Parks) captures a snarky, full-of-himself American pod-caster (Justin Long), drugs him, starts cutting off body parts, and transforms him into a walrus. Very creepy, very funny stuff from writer-director Kevin Smith. Note: Yes, that’s Johnny Depp with the ridiculous French-Canadian accent playing a disgraced cop named Guy Lapoint.

WHIPLASH It’s student versus teacher. It’s shy, talented kid going up against sadistic would-be mentor. Miles Teller wants to be “one of the greats” as a drummer. J.K. Sim-mons is the conservatory teacher who bullies his charges either because he likes to or because he truly believes that kind of treatment can make them better musicians. Teller, who’s been a drummer since he was 15, is ter-rific. Simmons just might take the Supporting Actor Oscar.

THE TRIP TO ITALY Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden get a second gig traveling around to eat at and report on fine res-taurants in this sequel to the 2010

f i lm T he Tr ip . But instead of Nor ther n Eng land , the i r s e -q u e l a s -s ignment b r i n g s them to It-aly, where they rent a MINI Coo-per, listen to some Al-anis Moris-sette, dine in s t y l e , g e t i n t o contests of imita t ing M i c h a e l Caine and

Al Pacino, and discuss the vari-ous meanings of life . Funny and touching. Both films are by

Michael Winterbottom.

NIGHTCRAWLER The title is a slang term for vid-eographers who roam the night-time streets looking for the most graphic stories to sell to early morning TV news producers. Jake Gyllenhaal plays a soulless fellow who reads a lot of self-help books, gets a camera and a police scanner, then lets everything go way out of control. This one just might make you gasp ... a few times.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE Tilda Swinton and Tom Hid-dleston are old, but young-look-ing, vampires who have become sophisticated in their immortal ways, drinking special blood from crystal glassware rather than hunting down victims. Trouble comes to town with the arrival of
