Puddle of MuddRiverside Festival Site | June 27 Puddle of Mudd made a huge splash on the rock scene with their 2001 debut, Come Clean, which sold 5 million copies and featured the hit songs “Blurry,” “Control,” “Drift And Die” and “She Hates Me.” The group, led by charismatic frontman Wesley Scantlin, followed that up with the Gold-certified Life On Display, Famous and Volume 4: Songs in the Key of Love & Hate. Two EPs have followed, “Icon” and “re(disc)overed;” and a new one is in the works.

Jack & The Bear Abilene Bar & Lounge | June 27 This “Late Night Session” (after the Jazz Fest show) features Jack & The Bear. The folk rock act hails from Ann Arbor MI and has been compared to The Waterboys, Springsteen and even Tom Waits. Their self-titled EP was followed by a sophomore release, The Stranger Amongst the Loyal. The group is made up of brothers Evan and Ryan Close along with Chris-tina and Adam Schreiber, Ryan Servis and lead singer Brandon James.

ForgettersBug Jar | June 27 Forgetters, a punk rock outfit out of Brooklyn, is led by Blake Schwarzenbach. Releases include a self-titled EP and LP. Blake bills this show as his “2013 Disco De-cathlon.”

Start Making SenseWater St. Music Hall | June 28 The Talking Heads tribute band, Start Making Sense, comes to town from their native Pennsyl-vania, recreating every stage of the band’s career. Jon Braun handles the lead vocals as a ‘spot-on David Byrne,’ bringing you a danceable

celebration of the new-wave punk that you loved in the ‘80s.

Family Funktion & the Sitar JamsAbilene Bar & Lounge | June 28 Family Funktion & the Sitar Jams are at Ablilene’s for a “Late Night Session” (after the Jazz Fest shows). The band is comprised of a group of brothers who have created a new psychedelic sound by combining their love of rock and funk with Indian, classical and folk. Releases include Karma Print.

Oisin Mac Diarmada & Seamus BegleyMcGraw’s Irish Pub | June 28 Two of Ireland’s most popular traditional artists, fiddle player Oisin Mac Diarmada and accor-dion player/vocalist Seamus Be-

gley, bring the music of the West Coast of Ireland to town. Oisin is a seven-time All Ireland Fiddle Champion and is a member of the successful group Teada, which has performed all over the world. He has been described as “one of the most gifted and creative traditional fiddlers playing today.” Seamus rarely ventures from Ireland or away from his working farm on the Dingle Peninsula. He sings in both English and Gaelic, which was his first language. A consummate storyteller, Seamus is known for his wit and for pump-ing out tune after tune at all-night sessions.

The GunpoetsClub @ Water St. | June 28 The Gunpoets are an up and coming act out of Ithaca. Their live shows have been described as providing “music that makes your body move,” as they fuse hip hop with pop, rock, soul and funk to form their own unique, danceable

sound. Releases include “Shoot The Stars,” “Come With Us,” and “I-Town Remixes.”

Dan FiskFlaherty’s, Honeoye Falls | June 28 Singer/songwriter/guitarist Dan Fisk brings his dynamic style of acoustic rock to Fla-herty’s. Voted one of Washington DC’s “Hottest 5” musicians in 2010, he’s been featured on DC’s CBS affiliate, WUSA-9. Dan has been described as having “a rhyth-mic, often chunky playing style” as heard on his debut solo EP, “Bruised From the Backseat.”

Keith Purnell & Latice MitchellJoke Factory | June 28-29 A high-energy act defined by quick wit, style and fast paced humor, Keith Purnell performs regularly at top comedy clubs

•SLOW PARADE – John W. Borek presents Slow Pa-rade: An Evening of Short Plays by Louie Podlaski on June 30 at MuCCC, 142 At-lantic Avenue. The show is a collection of seven short plays written specifically for this evening – an old time television icon gets his due; a terminally ill doc-tor sees the medical profession from the other side; a couple during a storm re-luctantly spend the night in a stranger’s house; a passenger on a plane sinks her loquacious teeth into her seat–mate; death-row prison guards question their own moral-ity; a man and woman years apart find a way to speak in the afterlife; and a band of superheroes face their demise. Visit www.muccc.org. •BOOM – Bristol Valley The-ater at 151 S. Main Street in Naples NY will present the comedy, boom, from June 27 thru July 7. Wilkes Booth Wilkes Booth is back – back with a brand new CD – and back playing live! “Let’s Get Back To Rock” is the new song from their latest release; and it says it all. Jai Johnny Johnson(Member of The Allman Brothers Band and leader of Jaimo’s Jasssz Band)

By Scott Gudell

Influence. It can be powerful, memorable and long lasting. When you and your band create an album that is consistently ranked as one of the Top Five Live Recordings ever, when you and your band are top of mind when it comes to definitive Ameri-can bands and when you have a band member that is revered for his searing and respected guitar playing, you have influence. But it’s also the sum of the parts since each and every band member…living, deceased or departed…has contributed mightily. Jai Johnny Johnson, who now prefers the name Jaimoe, was one of the founding members of that iconic group The Allman Brothers, and is still the group’s drummer. When he’s not actively working with them, he’s focused on his own group, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, which is coming to Rochester this month as part of the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Here are a few things we talked about several weeks back as he reflected on a long career in music and as he looked forward to his journey to New York: Although Jaimoe is known as the drummer and the anchor of The Allman Brothers, he brought with him a deep knowledge of jazz and road warrior work for R and B artists such as Otis Redding when he performed in the early 1960’s. Together, they performed numerous concerts throughout the states and Jaimoe was able to be part of one of the most influ-ential groups of the 1960’s. “No, I never recorded with him. There were a few people that they used on recordings like Al Jack-son, on damn near everything. If he wasn’t available, they would wait,” Jaimoe explained when asked if he ever recorded with Redding. When it came time to hit the road with Redding, Jaimoe recalled that he personally only performed with the group in the States and never in Europe. “I couldn’t get a passport. I didn’t have a driver’s license; I didn’t have a social security card. I had lost my wallet…I didn’t have anything with my name on it.” So Redding went to Europe and

played his patented mix of funk, soul and jazz…without Jaimoe. “One of the reasons a lot of cats…and chicks…are not good musicians is because they limit themselves… ‘Oh, I don’t play this kind of music or I don’t play that kind of music.’ There are only two types of music: it’s either good or its bad,” Jaimoe reflected. As if to follow that, I reminded Jaimoe that revered producer Tom Dowd once described The Allman Broth-ers as a group that played blues, jazz and rock…in that order. “Jazz is just a, let’s say, an up-per class blues and rock and roll, what shall we call it, one of the cousins,” Jaimoe responded with a sly chuckle. “So I call my band Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band because all of that stuff is jazz to me. It’s funky…music that’s improvised. When people do something so well, people get the idea that ‘that’s gotta be what he does’ because he does it so well. I play ‘music’…and I don’t care what they’re going to call it,” he said, and then praised the fact that he has the freedom to play and per-form the type of music he wants to present to the world thanks to the economic freedom he has. When we talked about gain-ing defining skills in the world of music, Jaimoe said “I work at what I do.” It was a simple yet powerful statement about how to create the memorable music he’s helped play through his decades in dozens of studios and on count-less stages. Whether scientists, lawyers, doctors whatever…you “gotta let that come through you. The ones who get the information are the ones who are prepared for it.”

WHITE HOUSE DOWNWritten by James Vanderbilt; directed by Roland EmmerichWith Channing Tatum, Jamie Fox, James Woods, Maggie GyllenhaalRated PG-13

By Ed Symkus

It’s been three months since Olympus Has Fallen, the story of vicious North Korean nutballs violently taking over the White House, was released. I just revis-ited my review from that long-ago spring day. I called it a “flag-wav-ing chunk of action cinema,” and mentioned that Olympus is the code word for the White House, upon which there is a “coordi-nated attack,” that demands are made and hostages are killed, and that a heroic former Army guy in the right place at the right time is involved in “one of those one man against the world deals.” In White House Down,a chunk of action cinema that’s not all that flag-waving because the enemy is domestic, rather than foreign, the White House again faces a coordinated attack. Demands are made, hostages are killed and, you guessed it, a heroic former Army guy in the right place at the right time is involved in “one of those one man against the world deals.” This could just be a case of bad timing, of film studios keeping secrets from each other concern-ing what films they’re making. But that doesn’t really matter. The deal is that Olympus, was a pretty good movie. White House is not. It’s a sloppily made pastiche of thriller clichés that, although boasting a few passable action sequences, plays out sluggishly, and never lets its characters get in the way of one more opportunity to set off big bursts of bullets. The main characters include President Jamie Foxx, Capitol Police Force member Channing Tatum, Secret Service honcho James Woods, Secret Ser vice Agent Maggie Gyllenhaal, and pesky little girl hostage Joey King, as the daughter of Tatum. A TV chatters on about the President’s controversial Middle East peace plan; John Cale (Tat-

um) makes his way to the White House to be interviewed for a Secret Service job, and it’s ap-parently “bring your daughter to interview day”; Walker (Woods) is resigning in a week; Finnerty (Gyl-lenhaal) hasn’t slept in a week; there are suspicious-looking guys skulking around the White House in maintenance outfits (with guns and silencers and masks in their pockets); and Speaker of the House Raphelson (Richard Jenkins) has a Herb Alpert song as his ring tone (yes, that’s impor-tant). OK, it’s time for that coordi-nated attack, first on the Capitol, then on the White House. And so what if Cale didn’t get that job. He’s still there – because his daughter wanted to go on the White House tour – and he gets a gun and does what a hero is supposed to do against bad guys in an impossible odds situation. But why is all of this happen-ing? The constantly wavering script first says it’s for big money. Then it’s blamed on an act of revenge. Or, hold on, it’s really because of political differences, from within, concerning the world stage. The story just keeps chang-ing, with each reason making less sense. Whatever started this ball of confusion rolling, it eventually turns into the young kid trying to outwit the bad guys, Cale running the president through survival maneuvers, and a traitor being outed. If you’re into an Every-man stuck in an extraordinary situation scenario, Tatum is your man, and he holds his own in the film. But no one else is of much interest. That’s the kind of thing that happens in a film by Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomor-row, Independence Day), a guy who’s known for big, destructive set pieces, rather than being an ac-tor’s director. Yet the explosions, and obviously the effects budget, in this one are markedly smaller than in his previous films. And to top it off, the film, just refuses to end, adding still more ridiculous complications even after the story has reached a somewhat satisfac-tory conclusion. But at least we learn a few new terms: The president is referred to as “The Package”; people who want to kill him are part of the “Threat Matrix”; his private limo is called “Ground Force One”; and the code word for the White House in this version of the story is “The Castle.”
