Preussia was a nation of grandeur, royalty, nobility, and central German governmental rule. A country of mixed nations both richestof the rich and poorest of the poor. A vast territory of deep political struggle, that allowed surrounding countries to usurp their share of the land as the Preussen Empire became no more. Physically yes it no longer exists but in the people of Preussia, the nation lives on in deep rooted culture, memories, written script, pictures, and many more traditions that we as genealogists and proud decendants try to unearth and retain.

The Province of Posen (Poznan)

The 19th century Prussian province of Posen was called Wielkopolska until 1793, literally "Greater Poland". This region was the historical center of origin of the Polish Nation in the 10th century and has always been one of the richest and most developed provinces of Poland. In 1793 (as a result of the Second Partition of Poland) Greater Poland was taken over by Prussia and initially renamed "Southern Prussia". After 1815 this term was no longer used and the province was refered to with the name of its capital town, i.e. Poznan (German: Posen). This is often misleading, especially the records containing the name "Posen" are ambiguous - they suggest the town, where usually the entire province is meant. Even before the Partitions, Wielkopolska had some German population but as it became part of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German colonization increased significantly. Most of the settlers were Lutheran and many Protestant parishes were established. Before WWI, the German-speaking inhabitants were about 35% of the total population. The majority of them lived in the western and northern districts. The

Page 7

Page 8: Duane Kuss Family History

central and southern part of Wielkopolska retained its Polish and Catholic identity. After Germany lost WWI, the territory of the Province of Posen was returned to Poland which was then restored as an independent nation. Only some of the western regions remained part of Germany. Together with the western districts of the former West Prussia, those areas were included in a new province called Grenzmark Posen-Westpreussen which existed until 1938. The majority of the German-speaking inhabitants of the Polish parts of Wielkopolska emigrated to Germany after 1920. After WWII also the areas of the former Province of Grenzmark were incorporated into Poland. The Germans living there were forced to leave and the Poles from the former Polish territories in the East started to settle there. The map below shows the territory of the Province of Poznan (Posen) at the beginning of the 20th century. The division into districts and the Polish and German names of the district towns are provided. The regions marked in yellow are those which remained in Germany after WWI. The parts of Silesia which were incorporated into the Poznan voivodship after 1920 are shown in cyan.

Political & administrative status of the Province The Prussian province of Posen (Poznan) was established in 1815 and comprised the major part of the Polish region called Greater Poland most. Until the 1860'ies, the term "Grand Duchy of Posen" was officially used as a name of this province, which was later abandoned due to the unification of the Prussian monarchy. Despite this terminological change, the territory of the Province remained unchanged during the entire century (until 1919), thus it won't cause much ambiguity to refer to it as "Province of Posen" all throughout this period. Some historical information concerning this area is available within the Genealogy & Poland guide. Please note: as "Posen" can mean also the capital town (Poznan) of this province, I will use the term "the Province" to denote the Province of Posen everywhere in my guide.

In 1815, the Province was initially divided into 26 districts. Their seats were in the following towns (German names in brackets): Babimost (Bomst), Buk, Bydgoszcz (Bromberg), Chodziez (Chodziesen), Czarnkow (Czarnikau), Gniezno (Gnesen), Inowroclaw (Inowrazlaw), Jarocin (Jarotschin), Koscian (Kosten), Krobia (Krben), Krotoszyn (Krotoschin), Miedzychod (Birnbaum), Miedzyrzecz (Meseritz), Oborniki (Obornik), Odolanow (Adelnau), Ostrzeszow (Schildberg), Pleszew (Pleschen), Poznan (Posen), Srem (Schrimm), Sroda (Schroda), Szamotuly (Samter), Szubin (Schubin), Wagrowiec (Wongrowitz), Wrzesnia (Wreschen), Wschowa (Fraustadt), Wyrzysk (Wirsitz). The north-eastern part of the Province belonged to the Regierungsbezirk (administrative region) in Bydgoszcz/Bromberg while the rest constituted the Regierungsbezirk Poznan/Posen. The division of the Province into the administrative regions, though important in the structure of the Prussian administration, is of little meaning to genealogical research. On the other hand, the division to districts and parishes is very important as in all documents the district affiliation of towns used to be provided.

In 1887, an administrative reform was introduced and the number of districts was increased. This new status remained practically unchanged until the end of World War One or even to 1932, as far as the areas remote to the post-WWI border are concerned.

After the WWI, the major part of the Province of Posen was returned to the restored Republic of Poland and only a westernmost strip of it remained German. Several changes of the district borders were done along the new border line. The Polish part of the former Province became part of the new voivodship Poznan except for the north-eastern districts which were incorporated into the voivodship of Polish Pomerania (capital seat in Torun/Thorn). The German part was included into a new Prussian province named Grenzmark Posen-Westpreussen (Borderland of Posen and West Prussia) with the capital in Pila/Schneidemuehl. This small province was in 1938 divided between Brandenburg, Pomerania and Silesia. In the voivodship Poznan the district borders were changed in 1932 when their number was decresed. In 1938 the eastern part of historical Greater Poland was also included into the voivodship Poznan. This area, with such cities as Kalisz and Konin, was not part of the Prussian Province of Poznan before WWI but belonged then to the Kingdom of Poland ruled by the Russians.

As the result of the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, Hitler incorporated the voivodship Poznan into the Third Reich and renamed it Warthegau (Warta Region). After the War, the pre-War Poznan voivodship was restored. In 1975, the administrative map of Poland was redrawn and the areas of the 19th century Province of Poznan became part of 8 new voivodships: Poznan (its entire territory), Pila (its southern part), Leszno (its entire territory with small exceptions), Konin (small areas in its western part), Kalisz (its western 2/3), Gorzow Wielkopolski (its eastern portion), Zielona Gora (small eastern strip), Bydgoszcz (its southern 1/3).

Berthas family in Germany were a poor debtors farmers who lived above the barn on their employers property. Bertha left Germany to travel to America to escape the poor hardship of that country.

Another chore she would do normally around the Jewish celebration of Pass Over. She would have to take dumplings her mother had made and stuff them down the mouths of the geese. January 31, 1985Dear Duane, Mickey & boys,Things have been changing fast around here. Dad worked on cars on Jan. 14 and moved out the 15th. They got their lease settlement on the 15th and closed and finished moving the 16th. Most of the things were put in our home garage.About 4 pm on the 16th, we drove up to check on Grandma and leave Sandy with her. On Thursday at 11:00 am we started driving, landing in Kansas City, MO. the first night. The snow was piled higher there than at home. We ended up in Hot Springs, Arkansas and played golf in 68 degree weather on Saturday afternoon. Sunday the temp had dropped to 1 degree but with the sun shining i seemed warmer. We scouted out a motel that had a golf course and offered free golf to their customers as the fee on Saturday at the Country Club was $30.00 for the two of us. The motel was also nicer than we have it at home and we paid $34.00 a night. We played lots of golf- slept, ate and watched TV. The temp most of the week ran from 25 degrees in the night to 50 and 55 degrees in the afternoon. If the sun was shining and you were out of the wind, it was actually sun tanning. We enjoyed it much.Left Arkansas on Friday the 25th and landed at Jerry and Jans. (Lindsay) The snow piled along the highway in Illinois was higher than the semi behind us. The winds really make the drifts in that flat country. We got home late Saturday night and picked up Sandy on Sunday. My boss gave me a full time job today. If I can handle it, I will be cashier in teh cafeteria- hours will be 7:30 am-3:30 pm with all benefits included. This is hospitalization, dental and profit deal which I havent completely discussed yet. I think I could like this.I knew if I started writing a letter to your we would hear from you tonight. Dad is talking to Duane now. (on the phone)Mostly I wanted you to see this beautiful newspaper item they did on Dad and John. Will enclose it in this letter. We talked to John Tuesday night and he is planning on coming back on Monday. He has been down to see Avis in Missouri. Our station is boarded up and the pumps are gone. It really is hard to see it that way. It looks ghostly. How are you doing? I talked to your Dad on Sunday, Mickey, and he sure sounded happy to be at home.Hope you are keeping warm!Love,Mom & Dad

Christmas 1986Found the 1983 Olds we had to have up in Pine City, from the banker. One week of vacation at cabin, really enjoyed the Wednesday flea market. Started butter knife collection. Golfing still terrible. Arlie and Ruby joined us on a week end. Mickeys big birthday party, we went to Duluth for wedding on the boat all beautiful. Lost our renters, got a guy - Rick Roeser and gal Julie Franco. She is also leaving January 5th.Visited Todd & Kim on Sept 19th week end. Christmas 1993In February the granddaughters took me to have my ears pierced. I can now put them on without looking, but my old fingers wished I had pierced sooner. In February we also got Rusty Dads dog. If we had to have a dog, they dont make them any better than the one we got. We have enjoyed go health this year.We drove to Waukesha, Wisc. with Harriet and Ken Vassar to watch Todd run. Great trip. Our vacation was spent visiting Toots and Bern, 41st Anniversary for Dury & Esther and a golf party for Ken Carlsons retirement. Twelth year at Land O Lakes. 25 Dec 1984lori&Doug Smith, 12024 Cree St., Coon Rapids, MN 55433My first full year of being a housewife-mother. Ill never regret it. No taxes to pay for this year. Started the camping experience that Ive wanted all my life (RV). Got Bob and Jerry married off. Todds last year of football. Good year for us as a family. Next year looks like it could be a challenge.

25 Dec 1985Daune & Arla Kuss, 4208 Jackson St. N.E., Col. Hts., MNThis is a difficult year for me to look back on. I think Ill remember it as the depressed year for our family. Mom and Dad lost the station, bringing Jerrys job to an end. Duanes business folded and Dougs commission was restructured, lowering our income. Grandma Moore left us all missing her dearly. But Id rather think about the positives. Grandma did not suffer much and I know that her faith brought her to Gods home. Jerry has done excellently in his position with Tousley. Mom really seems to enjoy her full-time Land-O-Lakes job. Amys met her goal to become a housewife-mother with her beautiful little Chelsea. And Todd has done us all proud by graduating from Carleton and landing a job with General Motors. Best of all he married Kim, who we all love. This is the year I learned to appreciate Christmas-from the trivial trimmings to the love we all get a special time to share. Because of our trip to AZ, I felt like this Christmas wasnt. Although we got bits and pieces before and after, I learned theres nothing as special as the entire family getting together at one special time, good

moods or bad and just sharing with each other the love that weve attained through the years. It was those memories of the past times with those I love that got me through the Christmas of 85 without them.Christmas 1986Lori and Dougs new home in Anoka.Such a exciting year of holiday activities for us! Jessicas active participation made it so much more special for us. Jennifers not old enough yet to do much more than eat paper, but its real special to have an infant around again. Both girls got horses this year (spring type) to itll be interesting to watch them develop. This was our first big Santa delivery. Jessica was awestruck by a horse she hadnt planned on, but she was a little dissappointed in the small popple Santa came up with. Dougs still doing successfully with BE and Ive got my hands full with both girls. Jessica loves her baby Jennifer. Jennifer idolizes her big sister. Doug and I have decided were so happy with our two girls, well probably keep it that way. Were thrilled to have the whole family here in our new home for Christmas. Everyone seems to be in such good spirits. We all worked together on the dinner. It feels so good to be together! Lori Jo Kuss Smith

Christmas 199312/24/1993The year of the Volunteer... This year must be recognized as a year when I learned to give up on personal goals that seemed important as I grew up to find new goals that are bigger than I ever allowed myself to set. A year of transition ~ a year of reversal of values if you will. Escaping the clutching jaws of motherhood while still holding on to the important values of being a parent. The whole family has had to adjust, but I think we are all going to be healthier individuals for it. Volunteer coordinator at Lincoln. Doug- basketball coordinator.

25 Dec 1984Lori&Doug Smith, 12024 Cree St., Coon Rapids, MN 55433This last past year has been enjoying Jessica now 14 months. She has lots of hair and tall. We took our first trip with our RV with Mom and Dad. Went around Lake Superior. Spent most weekends traveling. Sister Kim moved to Arizona.

25 Dec 1985Daune & Arla Kuss, 4208 Jackson St. N.E., Col. Hts., MNChristmas 1985 we were in Arz. with Mom and Dad Smith. We drove the motorhome down the whole way, Jessica loved it. We saw Kim & Dwight, other relatives, Weather clear 75-80. We also drove to California for a couple of days. Highlites were, Kim & Dwight made the trip also. Lori went down to the beaches for the first time. San Deigo-Sea World Zoo & Disneyland were the main attractions. During the year there were two marriages: Kim & Dwight in May and Kim and Todd in November now living in Ohio. Lori is expecting in May ??

Christmas 1986Lori and Dougs new home in Anoka.A information about one year. It was an exciting year, a year of growth. We moved into our know new house that seems like home now. With the new addition Jenny born on Oct. 7th, looks so much like Jessica when she was her age.All is going well business wise, the company growth has been fantastic. Lori & myself enjoyed a weekend at IZ to give us a little break.

Page 22

Know during the holiday, when everybodys been so happy and in good spirits. It has been kind of frustrating in some ways because of the colds the the bug thats been in our house this year. We sure could use some snow. Very little snow on the ground and its been very mild in the mid 35-40s.This year has been so exciting to see Jessica get involved in the holiday spirit. We had Loris family all here for Christmas & Christmas Eve we were at Deb & Toms new home. It has been a year to not forget. Doug Smith

Chistmas 1993Dougs highlights: Going on a house boat trip with Duane up to Pine Lake (Birch Lake, Babbit, MN) where Hoota has his cabin. It was a very cool summer did not use the boat much.It was my first year of coaching Jessica in basketball. It was fun to see the progress in each player. We were able to enjoy a nice weekend with some friends of ours... the Armesons and their family at a KOA Camp Ground at Clear Lake. It was the year of the sauna early in the spring, Todd and Duane stoked up the burner. It was a little to hot and Taylor the watch dog saw the smoke and told Todd and Duane the sauna was burning. Later we rebuilt the sauna on Todds birthday. Deer hunting will be remembered for the birch that wanted to be shot. It was the first year since Jessica was born that Lori has been working. It has been very good for her.I'm still working at Business Essentials, 14 years. Jessica is getting to be a young lady - first year of baby sitting, always looks after her sister. Jenny is getting better at going to bed. She still has a mind of her own. Many memories to be remembered. Golf Longest Drive Todd ( Hah Huhs. 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS IN THE WILDERNESSFrom: Debbie KussWednesday, July 7, 1999Subject: Boundary Water Canoe Area, Ensign Lake, Minnesota USA

Hi Everyone,Thought I would give you all a little update on our experience in the BWCA. We are all very thankful no one was hurt or killed.

Page 31

Page 32: Duane Kuss Family History

We drove to the cabin Wednesday night. Of course everyone was so keyed up it was hard to sleep. We started our morning when one of the little girls (7 years old) fell down the loft hole. She said, "I missed the first step". She was fine, but scared everyone at 3:00 a.m. We left around 4:45 a little behind schedule (moving a group of 14 takes a little extra time) than hit intense fog, arrived at the Wolf Center at around 7:00 a.m. We had two separate groups, we knew we could not camp together or travel together but were hoping to meet up a couple of times. At least on Sunday for Joe's 6th birthday. We had packed in a couple of small presents. He was a little disappointed he was not going to get fireworks, since he thought they were a part of his birthday.

There was Lisa's group, with 4 small children ages 6-8. Another couple Jay and Debbie and their two daughters Amanda and Amber joined Lisa's family. Our group was Sue, Gaylon, Eva, Chris, Andy-14, Carley-12, Kyle-14 and I. Oh and we can't forget Holly the yellow lab.

We had a beautiful campsite facing West. The other group was down approximately one mile facing east. Sue, Gaylon, Kyle and I had set our tents out on the point to hopefully cut down on the bugs. Eva and her family were down the trail tucked in a small clearing. We had beautiful weather, a beautiful campsite and fair fishing. The wild flowers and the birds were plentiful and beautiful, something we didn't see as much of when we typically go in the fall. We had seen moose, deer, eagles, beaver, rabbits, turtles and a otter that took the fish that Carley had just cleaned off the rock and was having supper just down the bank, for all of us to watch and appreciate. Kyle and Carley would catch zip lock bags full of cray fish in the evenings.

It was Sunday the 4th of July, extreemely hot and humid. After breakfast the kids decided they would go down to Lisa's camp, go for a quick swim and wish Joe a Happy Birthday. They put on their life jackets and the three took off in a canoe. It was so hot that the five of us and Holly were swimming at 10:30 a.m. just to cool off. We were sitting on the rocks relaxing and the guys decided they would go fishing. Eva, Sue and I were gathering daises and vines to make the girls crowns of daises. If started to rumble a little and we were wishing the kids would be pulling in at any moment. We did not want them in the water if it started lightening.

Sue had made a comment about how strange the birds were acting. We had groups of starlings flocking together, flying from tree to tree making all kinds of noise. In after thought, they were being pushed toward us by the wind. We decided we would move off the point and finish under the tarp we had set up behind a small group of trees in our kitchen/cooking area. It looked like rain so we gathered our rain gear and were weaving away.

All of the sudden, we could hear the wind picking up, the guys were quickly trying to get the "Red Old Town" canoe tied up. They scurried about trying to get a few things out of the boat and under the tarp. I got up and walked around the small group of trees to look at the weather. All I could see was a green wall coming straight towards us. Within seconds it hit. We were all under the tarp. Chris was struggling to get Holly's collar back on so it would be easier to hang on to her. We were scrambling to get our rain gear on. All of the sudden the tarp started ripping loose forcing us all to huddle closer together. Holly was in the middle with the rest of us tryping to keep the tarp around the group and holding onto each other. As a group it was easier to stay grounded in the hurricane like winds.

Gaylon and Sue were on the edge keeping eye on any trees to dodge... they were coming down all around us. A large white pine tree top came down approximately 3 feet behind us. Eva meanwhile watched the ground heave up and down next to her, as the tree just in front of us struggled to keep upright. The noice level was intense.Sue was wondering if we should move off of the point since we were getting hit directly. Gaylon felt that it was safer where we were because everything had already come down around us and missed us. To venture off into the woods would most likely be even more dangerous. So we rode it out, all huddled together. As I glanced at the faces in the group I was suddenly over come by a all consuming question, "Where are my children?" Eva had the same concern. We felt and hoped that Lisa had them, it was agonizing to consider anything else. We prayed they hadn't started back and if that were the case, certainly they would have had enough time to find shelter on shore. Once during the down pour, I left the group to look to see if our tents were still standing, but I couldn't see them.

I didn't have a watch on but speculate that the storm hit us around 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. and lasted for 30 minutes. When it started to let up we realized that Gaylon had nothing on other than a cotton tee shirt and a pair of wind pants. He was shaking violently and we all feared hypothermia might be setting in. We quickly moved him to the center of the group and Chris went to his tent in search of some dry clothes. The tent now had a tree laying on top of it but some way or another he was able to pull out a dry wool shirt. Gaylon stripped off his wet shirt and within seconds felt the immediate warmth of the

Page 32

Page 33: Duane Kuss Family History

wool fibers next to his cold wet skin.

By some chance of luck the coffeepot was ready to start, all we needed was to find a dry match to start the burner. We soon had Gaylon sipping down some hot coffee. I truly believe at that moment we all were in a state of shock. We started to look around and realized that some 30-40 trees had dropped in our immediate vacinity. By some miracle none of us were hurt. Both Sue's and my tent were still there but flat as a pancake. It appeared the combination of rain water, tent stakes and the contents inside were enough to keep them on the ground. Eva's tent was under a tree and Carley and Andy's tent was still for the most part intact. Then we realized we were missing a canoe. The "Red Old Town" had been on the South side of a point tied to the rocks with a 70 lb. nylon rope. The rope was snapped and the canoe was gone. The canoe was eventually found over a half a mile away by a group of young men, volunteers who had worked the past two weeks on a 220 rod portage. To get there, the canoe had to fly airborne over our point, across the bay, over another point of land and finally into the bay beyond. Two hours after the storm the group showed up at our camp site with the "Red Old Town" in tow.The wind had finally died down enough that we were going to look for our kids. Chris, Eva and I took off in a canoe, leaving Sue, Gaylon and Holly back at camp. Eva had enough sense about her to grab rain gear and dry clothes for the kids. It was agonizing, we were searching the banks for any sign of them, we had gotten about half the way and the kids were coming around the corner with Lisa and Jay. When we finally saw one another and realized that everyone in that camp had survived, I couldn't stop the tears from flowing.

The other camp had also lost a canoe. The funny thing is, Eva and Lisa had switched canoes for the week and they both lost each others canoe. Lisa was quite relieved to find that her canoe was missing because the fact that Sue's canoe was missing. We decided to follow them back to look for their canoe. We had 16 people and only 4 canoes at this point. Another group of young men on the point were coming out in a canoe to help look. It always inspires me when I see how people rally in times of trouble. These young guys located the canoe across the bay buried under fallen trees. They jumped out waist deep, pulled it out, and emptied it for us. Chris transferred over into it and got it back to camp. When I walked into their camp I could see they had experienced their own set of nightmares as well. I grabbed Joe to give hiim a birthday hug and he said to me, "I thought you blew away", and again the tears flowed down without me being able to stop them. Lisa, thank God, did not let the kids leave earlier even though they thought they should get back. It was a blessing in many ways that the kids were there to not only help with the small children but they also had more protection. They were in a tent, when they realized all the trees were coming down towards the tent. They lowered the children down into a shear rock ledge. Carley was with all the small children, under a tarp trying to keep them from panicking by telling them stories and singing. Kyle and Andy werer in another spot of the rocks. Lisa had grabbed a tent tarp and was trying to get it to the kids when the wind picked her up. It was at that moment another miracle from God happened, as Lisa is about to sail off into the sky, Kyle and Andy reached up, grabbed her, and pulling her back to the ground. I will have to let you hear their story from Lisa or Scott because there were so many things that happened at their camp during the storm.By only the Grace of God did we all come out of the experience with no injuries or fatalities. After hugging and regaining strength from each other, we took off for our camp. I knew by this time Sue would be worried. Sue and Gaylon got enough poles between the two tents to set one tent up. The four of us would sleep together the last night. Eva was able to duct tape her tent together enough to have shelter. We had everything that was wet all strung out around the camp. Kyle, Eva and her kids started some supper. We started packing away anything we could knowing in the morning we'd begin our treck back to civilization.

I made my way back to the bathroom. Along the path I notice a tree that had been pulled out of the ground and was rocketing through the woods when it abruptly came upon two trees that were close enough together that the tree stopped in mid air when the trees roots crashed against the two trees. So now the tree was suspended in the air about 5-6 feet above the ground. The sheer force of the winds was evident everywhere. Can you imagine what would have happened if one of those trees had hit someone... it would have surely killed them immediately. The entire group was totally exhausted both physically and mentally. We started turning in around 10:00 p.m. That night another set of storms hit the camp including rain, thunder and an intense lightning show. Not many of us got much sleep that night.

We were promptly up at 6:00 a.m. The canoes were loaded by 8:00 a.m. Lisa and her group were at our camp by 9:00 a.m. and we decided to travel together. This decision was based on our mutual safety and given the experiences of the previous day, we felt it was necessary. While we were packing that morning, we had 3 float planes fly over our camp just above the trees looking for people in need of help. It looked like someone had dropped a bomb. If the trees were not up-rooted, they were sheered off. We got to our portage and because it was connected to a lake that allowed up to 25 horse outboard motors, someone had already been up this far and had used chainsaws to open the portage.

Page 33

Page 34: Duane Kuss Family History

We paddled out the 7 miles to find we could not get through using the canoe access. A group of kiakers suggested we go around the point to a boat landing. When I was finally walking across the parking lot headed for my truck, trees had fallen on cars everywhere I looked. We all faired well in the parking lot, which once again we credited to the angels who had been watching over us for the past 24 hours. We loaded up our gear and canoes and were on our way to Ely. The road along the way forced us to cross down powerlines, to evade toppled transformers and to criss cross between downed trees. In Ely Gaylon was talking to some people only to find out that we were in the heart of the storm. Things were sketchy at this point. They were just begginning to assess the damages and people were just beginning to make their way out.

They had airlifted 4 injured persons out early that morning. By the time it was over a total of 24 had to be flown out one in critical condition and another with a spinal injury. Most of the injuries were from fallen trees and flying debris. Today, July 7th, there are still cars in entry point parking lots which means there are still people out there yet to return. The winds during the storm blew between 80 and 100 miles per hour. The straight line winds took out a swath twelve miles wide and 30 miles long. They estimate the storm damaged one third of the over 1 million acres BWCA.

After a very long day, a sleepless night, a 7 mile paddle and a 300 mile drive home, I arrived home at 8:30 p.m. Monday. It was back to work on Tuesday and finally about 3:00 p.m. that day... I hit the wall. All I wanted to do was sleep, veg and/or cry.I'm feeling much better today and thank God and Our Angels for seeing us all out safely. What a 4th of July, Joe got his fireworks after all and a birthday we will all never forget. The funny thing is I think I need to go back this summer and will most likely at least try for the August Trip.

CORDELIA RETURNS TO MINNESOTAAfter James Woodward Warners death in January of 1883, Cordelia, Samuel and Caroline Janett returned to Minnesota from Indiana. John A. Warner bought off the heirs to James W. Warners part of the land. Mary R. Nauman worked for Cordelia. John Alsworth Warner also hired Caroline Janett to help with the work. Cordelia Shedd Warner wasn't very well. Don't know if she was very tall but she was real fleshy. She passed away September 2, 1889

The north 1/2 NE 1/4 of Section 33 (containing 80 acres) is where the log house was located that the Warners moved into when they first came from Indiana. The above 80 acres was later deeded to James Harvey Warner (father of Alice Warner Scholes,

Page 1

husband August Scholes) by James Woodward Warner and wife, Cordelia Shedd Warner.WARNERS ARRIVE FROM INDIANAIn the summer of 1864 the family was brought to Minnesota. James Harvey Warner (oldest son) was all ready in Minnesota. Cordelia Shedd Warner was ill with erysipelas and the family waited for six weeks for her to get well enough to come too, but she didn't so they came without here.James Woodward Warner and his older sons George, Sylvester and Seth went ahead and had horse teams with covered wagons waiting on the Minnesota side of the Mississippi river opposite LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Martha Jane, Caroline Janett, Rose, John A. (Age 4) and Asher (just over 1 year old) came by train from Indiana to LaCrosse, Wisconsin. There they boarded a ferry boat to cross the Mississippi to where the men, teams of horses and covered wagons were waiting. 4 year old John A. was so tickled (coming across the river) that when he caught sight of his dad and brothers on the other side, he took off is hat and waved it in the air hooting and hollering. Rose (age 7) his older sister was ashamed of his actions and tried to make him stop. The family arrived with their horses and wagons at the spring hole (deep place in Coon Creek) in Cora & Lucy's pasture on August 8, 1864. James Harvey Warner happened to be down there for a pail of water. We don't know how long it was before Cordelia Shedd Warner was able to come to Minnesota to join the family.

School District #15, Blue Earth, MN

WARNER FARM LAND PURCHASEDOn August 19, 1864, James W. Warner bought from Edward Dexter of Essex County Massachusetts the following tract of land:West half of the southwest quarter of Section 28, township 102 range 27. This 80 acre plot was purchased for $400.00.On September 27, 1864, James W. Warner bought from John Ragh (by John Beidle his attorney in fact) the following tract of land:The east half of the southwest quarter of section 28, township 102, north of range 27 west. This 80 acre plot was purchased for $280.00.The two plots just described became the 80 acres on the west side of north and south of the road belonging to Samuel Warner. The other 80 acres lies to the south and were eventually owned by Cora and Lucy Warner.

The Warner family is of English and Welsh heritage.

Don't know just how soon after James W. Warner came to Minnesota that they built the new house located in the same yard as Cora and Lucy's house but slightly further to the west. They lived in a log house where the Harringtons did at first. The rail road wasn't built through here then. They went up to St. Paul with teams and hauled back lumber for the new house. It appears that James W. Warner and the older boys hewed logs for the sills of the new house from trees cut in the woods here.

BLIZZARDJanuary 7, 1873 was the start of a fierce blizzard. Here, on the forenoon of January 7, 1873 Seth Warner and John A. Warner had taken Vest (Sylvester) Shedd (A first cousin of theirs) over to Delavan, Minnesota to take the train back to Michigan or Indiana.

Page 2

Page 59: Duane Kuss Family History

Was so warm that the snow balled up on the horses feet. They got home just as the storm broke. Washing was on the line and some of it blew away before it could be gotten in. George Warner just got up from the woods with a load of green poles for firewood. James W. Warner was in Blue Earth serving on the jury and had to stay in town till the blizzard was over. It lasted several days. 70 persons in the state lost their lives in the storm.

GRASSHOPPERSStarting in June of 1873 and on through 1874, grass hoppers were bad. During 1874 the grass hopper damage was bad in parts of Verona, Winnebago, Jo Daviess, Pilot Grove, Elmore and Blue Earth City townships.Grass hopper infestations were so bad that some of the settlers went back to where they came from. The Warners stayed here. One time when grasshoppers were thick, Sam Warner took a young horse out of the barn to ride. Grasshoppers pelted the young horse so that she made a run for the barn and through the door way without giving Sam a chance to get off.

RAILROADSIn January 1870, the first railroad, The Southern Minnesota, was built in from the east to Wells, Minnesota. So Wells was for a short time the railroad market and commercial metropolis of the county. On October 30, 1879, the formal opening of the new north and south railroad, now completed from Blue Earth northward to a connection at Lake Crystal with the main line of the St. Paul and Sioux City railroad. When they were working on the railroad along the west end of the Warner land, some of the men got their meals at the Warners.

Somewhere along about 1882, James W. Warner and his wife Cordelia Shedd Warner had a division of property. Cordelia got 100 acres which left him with the remaining 140 acres.Sylvester Warner was then married to Isabel Maglouglin and living where Howard Warner eventually lived. James W. Warner tried to get Isabel to use her influence on Cordelia to get her to stay with him but to no avail. Cordelia's mind was made up and she went back to Indiana taking Samuel with her.

Birth: 9 Apr 1866, Faribault County, Blue Earth, MN??Birth Memo: Only child born in MN. His mother must have been pregnant when she left James Warner in Indiana to move to live with her son John in MN.Death: 20 Jan 1933, Faribault County, Blue Earth, MN, age: 66Burial: 23 Jan 1933, Riverside Cemetery, Blue Earth, MN, age: 66Educ: Samuel Warner played the fiddle.

Once when Sam was small he found a hen egg and put it in his trouser pocket. It got broken and in an effort to get the crushed egg out of his pocket, he stood on his head.

In the early days the neighborhood boys had to herd the cattle. Sam Warner and Jim Sullivan were two of them. Charles Aling, an Englishman who owned and lived on the farm out south east later owned by Theodore (Ted) Ziegler, used to come riding on his horse by the cattle herders. The boys would get their dogs by the collar and whisper Sic em when he rode by so the dogs

Page 61: Duane Kuss Family History

would bark and make a big fuss. Mr. Aling was later a druggist in Blue Earth.

There were two older boys, John and Frank McCoy that were so mean to Jim Sullivan. Jim thought maybe they weren't so mean to Sam because he had so many big brothers. Sam's explanation was the fact he could run fast enough that they couldn't catch him.

The Sam Warner farm was located on the north 1/2 of the south 1/2 of the SE 1/4 (or 40 acres). It is here that the home and buildings were built that both Sam and Mary Rosetta Nauman Warner raised their family.

SAM & MARY GET MARRIEDAfter their marriage in November of 1888, Samuel and Mary R. Nauman Warner lived with Cordelia Warner and John A. Warner in the old house. (the one that lumber was hauled by horse and wagon from St. Paul to build it) Cordelia Shedd Warner willed Samuel Warner her 100 acres of land with instructions for paying off the other heirs. Don't know when Samuel had the house and barn built on his land.
