Dubbo College students have been recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee for their sporting, academic and

leadership skills. School Captain of Delroy Campus Sarah Toohey and School Captain of Senior Campus

Zoe Basham recently received the Pierre de Coubertin award, named after the founder of the modern Olympic Games.

The award recognises “students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess whilst exemplifying the

Olympic values.” Both Sarah and Zoe are keen sportswomen participating in a range of sports including netball,

athletics, soccer and tennis. They are all-rounders who also excel academically, as well as in their leadership roles.

“The College nominated us for the awards and we had to either write an essay or create an art work depicting Olympic

spirit,” Zoe said. “I was really surprised to win the award and I am very grateful to receive it. I’ve just completed my

HSC and want to study physiotherapy next year, so hopefully this award will help me work towards that goal.”

Sarah said she felt privileged to receive the Pierre de Coubertin award and was also taken by surprise.

“I sent my art work off and it was accidentally sent back to me in the post so by the time I re-sent it I thought it would

be too late,” she said. “It is a real honour to be presented with the award and I am very grateful to the College and the

Australian Olympic committee.”

Sarah will move into Year 11 at Senior Campus in 2014 and hopes to pursue a career in either teaching or law.

Last week we saw a very successful College Presentation night. Not

only were our highest achieving students recognised on the night, our

talented Circus Group provided an outstanding performance. Delroy

Campus Presentation night will be held on the evening of Tuesday 10th December in the school hall.

From the Principal...

This year we have organised a crèche so that parents can drop their younger children to out activity room

that is coordinated by our Child Care students. There will be many craft activities to keep the children occupied.

Last Friday I travelled to Sydney to watch the School Spectacular and it certainly was just that. How wonderful it was to

watch Amber-lilly Gordon and Iziah Towney perform at such professional and hugely watched event. Our students were

amazed at the enormity of the production and hope that next year more students can be involved. A big thankyou to

Ms Roser who organised the excursion and Rob Waters who drove the bus.

I would like to thank our Year 7 Advisors for 2014: Leigh Rice and Emmeline Smith for organising an outstanding Year 7

Orientation Day last week. More than 100 Year 6 students joined us for introductions, a range of mini lessons and a BBQ

lunch. Mr Martin, Mrs Budden and Ms Dundas cooked many sausages for our new students and I know that all staff were

very impressed with our new faces.

Mrs Thurston and Mr Thompson have completed interviews with Year 10 students who have not completed all of their course

requirements for the year. Classwork and ongoing aspects of assessment will continue up until the end of the year and our

Learning Centre tutors have supported many students to meet requirements for the “Record of School Achievements”. Year

10 will also be involved in a Year 10 Dinner being held on Friday 13th December. This is an opportunity to thank Year 10

for their contribution to our school and I would like to thank Mrs Green and Mr Livingston for organising the celebration.

Staff are busily making assessments and ensuring that students will be receiving effective feedback this week, they are also

writing reports that will be sent home on the 18th December. Just a reminder that the 18th December is the last day for

students to attend school and the expectation is that we have all students at school until this final.

As this is the final newsletter of the year I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe

and happy holidays.

A Dubbo College Year 8 student has completed a vocal per-formance at the Opera House as part of the State schools choir. Danae Kelly, the only Dubbo-based representative in the choir, was selected for inclusion after applying to join the 80-strong choir earlier this year. A student of Delroy Campus, Danae recently spent two days in Sydney rehearsing for the performance at the 2013 Festi-val of Choral Music. “It was so exciting,” said Danae. “I was standing there on the Opera House stage and I found it really hard to believe it was me and I was really there! It was such a great opportuni-ty. We actually performed two concerts.” State school students from throughout New South Wales make up the choir. Delroy Campus music teacher Lyndal Powderly said Danae was provided with a wonderful oppor-tunity. “It really is a select group of singers that get to go to State choir so Danae should be very proud of herself,” she said. “The standard is very high and it means students with the same interest and skill level in music are able to share team work and friendship.” Danae said she had been keen on singing since her brother taught her to sing when she was young. “I love music and a range of musical instruments,” she said. “But I really want to be an author when I’m older! Singing would be good too but I think I would prefer to write.” The songs performed at the Opera House included To Your

Pyrroluria - a treatable cause of tantrums, rages, and challenging behaviour

Her talk will cover why we need to eat nutritious food and what happens in our bodies when we don't. The

role of fats and sugar in our 21st century diet and how the way we eat today is putting us at increasing risk

of chronic disease. How sensitivity to food, specifically intoler-ance to natural substances in food as well

as artificially added substances such as colour-ings, preservatives and additives affects behaviour in some

children. She will also discuss Pyrroluria, a common genetic condition affecting about 10% of the popula-

tion, that is not yet widely understood by mainstream medicine and which can cause nutrient deficiency

even in spite of a good diet. The nutrient deficiency Pyrroluria causes can increase the like-lihood of tem-

per tantrums, rages, excessive sensitivity and anxiety in some children and can be effectively treated using

nutrient supplements.

Dr Alison Knight is a nutritional medicine practitioner

working mainly in the area of child and adolescent behavioural disorders.

Sydney University Law Society Day

Monday 25th November. Year 10 at South and Delroy travelled to the Senior Campus to participate in a Career Aspiration day. A group of

36 students from Sydney University took year 10 in activities such as Goal Setting, Human Rights information, University Life team work activi-

ties. Gilgandra and the Christian School year 10 students also participated in the day. Students were rewarded for their efforts with a BBQ cooked

by the Careers Team.

Work Experience: A few year 10 have taken the OPPORTUNITY to go out on Work Experience after

their exams. Shaun Lucas will be at Phil Knight Plumbing, Nikki Avilla will be at Dubbo Veterinary Hospital, and Corey Clarke Romans will

be at Williams Oriel Services. Thank you to these employers for giving the students a wonderful opportunity. Congratulations to other students

who have been on Work Experience this year - Josh Jones, Stephanie Cronin, Lincoln Sunderland, Tori Campbell Kelly, Haylea Dennis, Ste-

phen Mason, Raymond Hangan, Amelia Semmler.

Circus West steals the show at awards night

Dubbo College students Sam Read and Taylee Swords steal the show at the school’s annual presentation evening.

Two breath-taking feats by Circus West marked the finale of this year’s Dubbo College annual presentation night with Year 10 students Sam Read and Taylee Swords putting on a seamless performance on the silks. The spectacle was followed by a fire dance, with Sam joining fellow students Callie Woodburn and Tarryn Renshaw using flaming torches in a mesmerising display that kept the audience entranced. More than 200 students from Dubbo College received academic, cultural and leadership awards during the ceremony. In his occasional address, former Dubbo High student and Macquarie University vice chancellor Bruce Dowton urged students to make the most of opportunities and to help people along the way. He told students to value family support and education, because they were the keys to a successful future. The Dubbo Theatre was filled to capacity as a number of special guests presented awards to the students. Presenters included CSU head of campus Beverley Moriarty, retiring principal of Dubbo Public Greg Shortis, Senior Campus P&C president Sonia Strachan, South Campus P&C treasurer Vanessa Gower, Dubbo City Council deputy mayor Ben Shields and Deb Anemaat and Linda Cormack from the Department of Education’s student services division. College principals Andrew Jones, Darryl Thompson and Stacey Exner, as well as guest speaker Bruce Dowton also presented awards. Bonita wins State award for teaching excellence Dubbo College special education head teacher Bonita Stevens was last night (Tuesday 3/12) presented with the highest honour in the NSW Department of Education, the Director-General’s award for excellence in ser-vice. Mrs Stevens, who has headed up the Senior Campus special education unit since its inception, received her award during a ceremony in Sydney, where she was also given the honour of responding on behalf of the 30 schools and TAFE recipients. Originally a primary school teacher, Mrs Steven’s interest in the field of special education began when she was working at Lalor Park and was involved in a trial integrating a child with autism into her mainstream class. “I loved the response I received from the child and his grandfather who was caring for him,” Mrs Stevens said. “Lalor Park proved a great training ground because it taught me that there were ways of overcoming adversity. “After that I was fortunate enough to be invited to work with the gifted and talented program at Windsor Public School. I worked under the principal I had when I was a student in my home town of Peak Hill. While at Wind-sor I also began helping kids who were not able to read at their appropriate age level.” When Dubbo College began in 2001 Bonita made the successful transition from primary school teaching to high school special education and began running a unit of five classes. “With the help of my colleagues I am able to recognise and celebrate the diversity of individual students,” she said. “The achievements of these students can be as simple as making eye contact or a physical gesture to communicate with others. “The excitement on their faces and those of their parents when they achieve small milestones is incredibly rewarding.” Mrs Stevens said she had led her team to foster the belief that every person could contribute to society. “It is the role of the teacher to plan, prepare and implement opportunities so that students can achieve their very best,” she said. One highlight of Mrs Stevens teaching career has been the success of former student Hayley Bellamy, one of last year’s “Don’t DIS my ABILITY” ambassadors. “After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology, Hayley now has a very successful career in Sydney working with Pricewaterhouse Coopers’ online team,” she said. “She’s also continuing with her studies, undertaking a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication degree at the University of Western Sydney.” Like many women, Mrs Stevens has successfully combined having a family with her teaching career. “Receiving the award has made me reflect and sincerely thank my husband and two children, my parents, two brothers and many members of the teaching community who have given me support and opportunities along the way,” she said.

ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST GRANT TO DELROY CAMPUS Member for the Dubbo electorate, Troy Grant today has congratulated Dubbo College Delroy Campus on securing

$2,500 under the NSW Environmental Trust’s Eco Schools program.

“This grant would enhance students’ understanding of how to tackle environmental issues locally. Students and edu-

cators at the Dubbo College Delroy Campus will use this grant to build a new Delroy meeting place outdoor learning

area,” Mr Grant said.

“The space will have ironbark log seating, a traditional fire pit and a garden of plants with traditional Wiradjuri uses

to help students understand their environment and the area’s Aboriginal culture.”

Environment Minister Robyn Parker said more than $1.1 million was awarded to schools and researchers in this Envi-

ronmental Trust funding round.

“I was delighted to endorse $70,000 in grants for 20 schools so students can create food gardens or enhance their ex-

isting gardens,” Ms Parker said.

“In addition, 60 grants have been awarded to primary and high schools under the Eco Schools Program where

$150,000 will deliver environmental projects students will remember for a lifetime.

“And $885,000 has been awarded to six research institutions to help tackle environmental problems faced in NSW,

including fire management, coastal erosion and water quality.

“Environmental Trust grants are one way the NSW Government supports the community by funding projects that

protect and strengthen our environment.”

This is the first round of announcements of the $16,620,000 being offered by the NSW Environmental Trust in con-

testable grants for 2013. Other grant program areas are Protecting Our Places environmental grants for Aboriginal

Communities, Environmental Education, and Restoration and Rehabilitation, as well as the first suite of the Waste

Less Recycle More Initiative grants.

When a student is unwell at school he/she:

must obtain a note from the teacher and then present at the office,

where a parent/carer will be contacted by the office staff to collect the student.

Students are NOT to use their mobile phones to phone parent/carer di-

rectly.

For legal reasons and school policy students are NOT to leave the school

Mobile Phones and electronic devices are NOT to be

used in class. If they are used in class they will be confis-

cated by the teacher.

The phones will be stored at the office and may be col-

lected by the student from one of the Deputy Principals

at the end of the day.

Tax File Numbers

The Australian Taxation office has

adjusted the process where students

can apply for Tax File Numbers

through the school. All students will

need to provide their birth certificate

number - please note students need

to be 13 years old before they can

apply. This process is still far easier

than getting a Tax File Number

through the usual channels.

Anyone interested should see Mr

takes about five weeks from when the

school sends off the application until

the student receives the TFN.
