A Message from the President Dunbar Village Business Association

Spring is always an exciting time in Dunbar. The trees blossom, flowers spring from gardens, and Salmonberry Days – Dunbar’s homegrown month-long celebration – brings neighbours out of their cozy homes to get in touch with nature and with each other. It is also the time of year that major road projects get underway and this year it is Dunbar Street’s turn. We have a lot to plan for and to look forward to!

In this edition of our magazine you will see a profile of Helen Spiegelman who, along with Terry and Sharon Slack, came up with the idea for Salmonberry Days 14 years ago. Not only are there many free, and almost free activities to take part in during the entire month of May (see Salmonberry Days Calendar on pages 16 & 17), there is also family fun and excitement to look forward to at the Dunbar Community Centre Association’s Salmonberry Days Festival on Sunday, May 29th in West Memorial Park. Look for the Dunbar Village

Business Association booth, which will feature a lemonade stand for charity, pumpkin seed planting, balloon entertainer, face painting and a bike safety display.

As an effort to use this publication as a means to both document and celebrate life in Dunbar, we’ve asked some of the DCC Association board members to share with us their happy memories of Salmonberry Days Festivals past. Look for their reminiscences on page 14 that are sure to warm your heart and make you proud to have volunteers like them in our community. The Dunbar Village Business Association is proud to support both Salmonberry Days and the Salmonberry Days Festival.

This spring, summer, fall through to mid-winter, you will see parts of Dunbar Street torn up to accommodate new water and sewer lines. If you visit Dunbar Village by car, it will be a challenge, but if you ride your bike or walk – always a good idea – you will have an opportunity to use our new bike racks and sidewalk benches. See the article on page 18 for more information. The roadwork is going to be disruptive, but I hope you’ll make an effort to visit Dunbar businesses as usual.

From the feedback received about this publication, we are learning that everyone loves reading about their neighbours. We are a nosey bunch! The Dunbar Superstars project was formed to help produce inspiring and informative stories.

We are asking the people in the community who either live or work here to nominate “Superstars” by describing in 100 words or less why they think their neighbour is great. Superstars are people who inspire you and/or make you proud to live in Dunbar. Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded to nominees and nominators alike and Superstars will be featured in upcoming issues of Dunbar Life Magazine. COVER STORY: HELEN SPIEGELMAN

Helen Spiegelman is a familiar face to the Dunbar community. Until recently, she lived on West 22nd Avenue. She claims that during the 25 years that she lived there she was hardly a shrinking violet. If there was something going on in Dunbar, she was actively involved, whether it was arranging Labour Day block parties on her street, or broader initiatives through her affiliation with the Dunbar Residents’ Association. She planted a few long lasting seeds along the way including Salmonberry Days, which is celebrating its 14th anniversary in May. Spiegelman is eager to give credit to Salmonberry Day co-founders Terry and Sharon Slack. She and Terry Slack conceived Salmonberry Days as a way to call attention to the colony of Great Blue Herons that came back each year to nest in some trees near the edge of Pacific Spirit Park. They thought that the herons were both interesting and beautiful. In contrast to their graceful, Zen-like wading on the beach, they found the herons nesting habits at the top of very tall trees to be quite comical, and they wanted everyone in Dunbar to know about these extraordinary neighbours. The herons eventually left to nest somewhere else, as has Spiegelman, but the legacy of Salmonberry Days remains.

Every January, she and Terry Slack, and a team of a half-dozen people get together and set the calendar for the month-long Salmonberry Days. As far as she knows this celebration is unique to Dunbar. It not only teaches locals about the wild birds in the area, as well as the native plants, astronomy, geology, and other natural features of the Dunbar area, but also shares stories about the neighbourhood's history. Well ahead of it’s time, the first Salmonberry Days (1998) featured a reusable bag with the Salmonberry Days insignia and the words Think Globally, Shop Locally. This year the organizers have created a beautiful, sleek nylon courier bag, made from recycled Dunbar Business Improvement Area street banners sewn by volunteers.

Salmonberry Days offers tours of some of the best gardens in Dunbar, including Sharon Slack’s extraordinary organic garden, and holds workshops for Dunbar residents to learn practical skills including gardening, tree pruning, hen raising, cooking, and foraging.

While Salmonberry Days is primarily an event designed with the Dunbar community in mind, several years ago an overseas tourist attended nearly all of the events. He had read about Salmonberry Days online before he left home. Spiegelman feels it must have been a great way to get the feel of a new city. Fortunately, thanks to founders Spiegelman and the Slacks, this event is right on our doorstep, and there is no need to hop on a plane to take advantage of this unique homegrown festival.

Spiegelman no longer has a garden in Dunbar, but like a migrating bird, she will come back each year to witness the unfolding of the seasons in her favourite Dunbar “garden”, Pacific Spirit Park, and enjoy the berries that ripen there each season, starting with the salmonberries in May.

MEMORIES OF SALMONBERRY DAYS FESTIVALS PAST

For the 14th consecutive year, the Dunbar Community Centre Association is sponsoring the Salmonberry Days Community Fair. We took a trip down Salmonberry Days memory lane to talk to some of the Dunbar Community Centre Association’s board of directors about their favourite memories associated with this well-loved community event.

Linda Cohen recalls the first fair. “The day began with my family setting up Cohen’s Corner marshalling station at the southeast corner of Chaldecott Park for, what was then called, the Dunbar Fun Run. After the last runner was urged on, we charged back to the community centre to cheer them on across the finish line. Erica Levy directed traffic in her early years as a board member, and has been a fixture at the Community Association tent ever since!”

The park was alive with activity! Longtime realtor, Wayne Ryan, inflated the Remax balloon while volunteers were filling the really cold dunk tank to torture board members who were brave enough to be dunked. Animals escaped from the petting zoo and the Dunbar Residents’ Association was on hand with actual salmonberries. The main stage featured performers throughout the day, while the weather was perfect with glorious sunshine.

In later years, the Salmonberry Stage was the venue for the Dunbar Idol finals. Sponsored by Just Imagine Fun Clothing, Dunbar Idol ran for two years and showcased young talent from our community. Record crowds came out to cheer on the contestants and celebrate the winners.

Glenna Geddes fondly remembers going on the old BC Electric bus, which her son would pretend to drive. They would find many of his friends and their parents onboard the old bus too. It was like riding the #7 and seeing the whole community, but all the while staying in the Dunbar Community Centre parking lot!

Board member, Rudy Roelofsen, recalls the Dunbar Lawn Mower Drill Team. They were truly legends in their time. They were not necessarily part of Salmonberry Days but “mowed” for two years during the Dunbar Little League’s Opening Day Parade.

In honour of the Dunbar Community Centre Association’s 50th Anniversary Art Garden, Park Board Commissioners and MP’s attended, and there was a huge Happy 50th birthday cake for everyone’s enjoyment.

Another member commented “Who could forget the bouncy castle, a free ten-minute bounce! I was permanently parked there during my kid’s early years. Now, my daughter who is older, wanders around on her own and last year proudly displayed her henna tattoo!“ Pennie George’s family are also huge fans of bouncy castles! Pennie said “Need I say more?” Once again this year, the Dunbar Community Centre Association, Dunbar Centre Park Board Staff and the Dunbar Village Business Association offer you free rides and bounces, entertainment, community displays, a garage sale in the lawn bowling parking lot, performance by the Musqueam First Nation Dancers, local artists, face painting by Memorial pre-school, awesome races and much more! Join us on Sunday, May 29th at West Memorial Park for some fun in the sun, and create some Salmonberry Day memories of your own!

ROAD WORK AHEAD - WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

It is with great trepidation that we prepare for Dunbar Street to be torn apart in order to update the sewer and water lines. As the existing lines are estimated to be 70-80 years old, and as we prefer to keep sewage and water underground rather than freely flowing down the street, this work is necessary. However, the painful memories of roadwork past in other areas of the city have many of our businesses bracing for impact. We hope to combat this disruption with increased marketing and a healthy dose of information, information, and more information!

Here Is What we Know: The following dates have been supplied to us by the City of Vancouver Engineering Department, however, anyone who has ever tried to do a home renovation will attest, stuff happens and schedules change. We understand through our contact with the City that three blocks will be affected at a time with the work being done in one block and the block before and after being affected for traffic re-direction. As of April 1, here is the most up-to-date schedule.

To further challenge this schedule, the City tells us that street crews responsible for paving and curb repair will be about two blocks behind the sewer crews; the scope of the repairs depends on the sewers construction conditions. Finally, after all the sewer work is complete, the streets crew is planning to return to the area to do a full width pave on Dunbar from Marine Drive to West 16th Avenue.

The good news is when all the work is done, Dunbar residents can rest assured that water and sewage will stay where it is supposed to, and our beloved Dunbar Street will be nicely paved and painted.

Here Is What We Are Doing: We are keeping the lines of communication open and will continue to liaise with the City of Vancouver Engineering Department to ensure that we always know about any advancements or delays. We have had assurances that the impact to street festivals and events such as the Dunbar Village Harvest Festival, Trick-or-Treat on Dunbar, and Dunbar Village for the Holidays will be as limited as possible.

We will work with other community organizations to promote Dunbar Street as both a pedestrian-friendly and a bike-friendly environment. We have installed additional new benches and bike racks to encourage residents to leave their cars at home. We are also working with the City to add pedestrian crosswalks at Dunbar & 27th, Dunbar & 30th, and mid-block on West 41st between Dunbar & Collingwood to help slow traffic down and give people a safer place to cross the street. If you ride a bicycle through Dunbar Village, or took a ride in a pedi-cab during the Going Green on Dunbar event last March, then you will have had a chance to experience the Dunbar Street bicycle lane. It is a comfortable and safe way to get around as long as cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists take time to check for one another.

For Motorists • Once you park on the street CHECK, your left side mirror before opening your door.

Numerous cyclist die every year from being pushed by a door into street traffic.• Before turning left off Dunbar, CHECK the bike lane as well as the vehicle lane and

pedestrian crossing before making the turn.• If you are passing a vehicle on the right when they have stopped to turn left, CHECK your

right side mirror for cyclists coming up the street behind you.

For Cyclists• Remember to look ahead of you to CHECK that car taillights are not lit as someone could

be in the process of parking, pulling out, or opening a door.• Look for pedestrians and CHECK for anyone who may be popping out between cars to

cross mid-block or crossing at the intersection against the light.• CHECK your speed as you ride down the Dunbar Street hill. In general, cars weigh 3000

pounds and bicycles weigh 30 pounds so you can guess which one will sustain the most damage in a collision.

For Pedestrians• Cars are one thing, but remember to CHECK for cyclists before you cross the street.

Cyclists need a greater distance than cars to stop safely.• Before crossing the street, CHECK to make sure that you have made eye contact with a

driver or cyclist so that they know you are there, especially at uncontrolled intersections. • Little eyes are watching you, please CHECK to make sure you are setting a good example

for those around you. Crossing the street at an intersection during the pedestrian signal instead of mid-block is always a good start.

It is devastating to a community to lose a cyclist, pedestrian, or motorist on our streets. So please slow down, become aware of your surroundings, and look up to make eye contact with others around you. Help us make Dunbar Street a friendly and safe place to be – a place when pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists can live in perfect harmony!

People love to hear success stories, and Dunbar Cycles’ longevity is one of them. Dunbar Cycles has been a fixture in Dunbar Village since 1927. Many long time residents may even have bought their first bike there. The current shop has been in the same location for over 35 years, and was previously located across the street. In the last three years, Dunbar Cycles has undergone such a huge transformation that you may not recognize the shop. The eye-catching artwork in the window features recycled bicycle gears. This contemporary art piece by North Shore artist Steve Mitchell gives a modern feel to the bike shop, while a tiled exterior archway lends a nice connection to the past.

Dunbar Cycles owner Robert Venables is an avid cyclist. Originally from Alberta, he moved to Vancouver in 1993. Venables became acquainted with the shop as a cyclist when he used to ride with some of Dunbar Cycles’ staff. When he heard through the grapevine that the well-established bike shop was for sale, he jumped at the opportunity and bought the business. He had previous experience in everything from running a construction company, to building hockey arenas, as well as a background in other retail businesses; however the only experience he had with bike shops was as a customer. This worked to his advantage as he creatively approached the business by thinking like a customer, and created what a customer would like to see in a bike shop.

At Dunbar Cycles, there is something for every cycling enthusiast including their top selling item, children’s bikes. They also sell commuter bikes, cruisers, road bikes, and even a small selection of electric bikes. Venables and his staff have a strong passion for mountain biking and therefore offer a great selection of mid to high-end mountain bikes.

There are many loyal Dunbar Cycles customers; yet, an individual who stands out for Venables is a 67-year-old man who started downhill mountain biking three years ago. He is the most enthusiastic mountain biker of any age that Venables knows. He comes in or calls every day with questions and stories of his riding.

Venables modestly claims that he handles everything, in small amounts, from taxes and payroll, to marketing and fixing flat tires. He gives kudos to his coworkers, and his general manager Tony. He believes that they are the best staff anywhere and are a huge asset to

the business, as they are friendly, knowledgeable, and genuine team players. Venables feels that his most important role is as team leader, and believes in working collectively.

Passion and enthusiasm clearly propels Venables’ successful business. As with most small businesses, it is a labour of love and involves a seven-day work week. He can be found in the shop four days a week, and the other three days he spends working on marketing, race team support and product testing.

Dunbar Cycles has its own downhill mountain bike race team called Team DC. With sixteen athletes on the team, this makes them the largest team Canada. The team includes three- time national champion Andrew Mitchell, Dean Tennant who is second overall, and two of the top four women in Canada, Rebecca McQueen and Kjerston Lone. All four cyclists represented Canada at the World Championships last year.

Community involvement is of high importance to Dunbar Cycles. They are actively involved in sponsoring teams and races. They donate bikes to the bike/walk to school program, and provide bikes for children as part of an initiative with Queen Elizabeth Elementary School. They sponsor two B.C. Cup races. They donate to numerous silent auctions. They provided mechanical support for the B.C. Lung Trek. The list is long, and Venables is clearly committed to the community.

Robert Venables takes great pride in Dunbar village and enjoys the small town feeling. He believes that Dunbar has everything that one needs, and with the combination of great shops, plus the distance from downtown, it encourages people to shop locally. It is apparent that the Dunbar cycling community feels the same way with its support of Dunbar Cycles over the last 84 years. A party is certainly in order in 2027 when Dunbar Cycles turns 100!

HOW COULD WE HAVE BEEN SO WRONG?!by Janet Morris-Reade, Executive Director, Dunbar Village business Association

Since Dunbar Life Magazine first launched last November, I have been encouraging the residents of Dunbar to open up the lines of communications and tell us what you think. Well, I certainly got my wish!

Our last publication featured Adam Lorant, a handsome local resident and bicycle-to-work convert, who volunteered his time to allow us to create a stylized shot of him biking to work. The magazine had barely hit area mailboxes before we received some blistering feedback about the cyclist’s lack of bike safety equipment on the front cover. Clearly, we have made a mistake and on behalf of the Dunbar Village Business Association and the magazine publisher, Palla Media, I sincerely apologize.

In order to make amends and to rectify the situation, we have taken the following steps:

1. We notified as many Dunbar neighbours as we could through the Dunbar Neighbours List Serve (dunbar-vancouver.org/neighbours-mailing-list) and through on-going conversations, we acknowledged that we had made a mistake and apologized.

2. We used this opportunity as a "teachable moment" at our Going Green on Dunbar event that took place Saturday, March 12. We made a life-sized copy of the photo with the question: "What is missing from this photo?" and had pictures of helmets and other bike safety equipment for people to put in place over the image - paper doll style - so that we can openly acknowledge our error, while teaching children and the community about bike safety. We will also have this interactive installation again at the upcoming Salmonberry Days Festival on May 29th along with bike safety information.

3. We promised to include an article in this issue of Dunbar Life outlining our mistake, our apologies, and information about bike safety, which we are doing now.

We have obviously made a mistake, but we have tried to rectify it as best we can with earnest apologies, grace, and perhaps a little humour. Of course, please feel free to contact me directly with your ideas, concerns, comments and general feedback.

I love Dunbar because…As a part of our Going Green on Dunbar event, we reached out to the local schools to find out how the younger residents in our neighbourhood feel about their community. They were asked to complete the statement, “I love Dunbar because…” Thanks to everyone, both teachers and students, who participated. Here are just a few of the comments we received:

I live there and so do all my friends. We love to go into the Camosun Bog and playing laser tag kit. I also love to walk my dog in the forest. I like to chase garden snakes and just sit to listen to the great river. I also have a fort made out of fallen trees. ~ Faris, age 10.

It has many restaurants, theatres, supermarkets and many other cool stuff. I also like its soccer field and baseball diamonds

and playground all on one field. ~ Bailey, age 10.

I like to play on the tire swings with my dad and I get to go with my dad and my sister. Also, I get to play basketball with my dad and I always win and he always loses and my sister is the ref. ~ Raman, age 7.

It’s veeeeeeery convenient! I also love the Dunbar Public Library. ~ Andy, age 7.

I love the library. I can read all the books. I like Shopper’s because it has all the things you need. Dunbar has a lot of stores. There’s a bookshop that has a lot. It has a really good toy store with dolls and zoo pets. There’s a lot you can do on Dunbar. It has a good kid’s bookstore that has funny books too. ~ Emma, age 8.

Of all the fun activities there are like, soccer and art classes. ~ Amy, age 10.

There is almost everything there from a tailor’s shop, movie theatre, a supermarket, a liquor store, many, many restaurants and a lot more. Also, it is only on a few streets so it is all right there. If you lived right by Dunbar, you could get all your shopping done! That is only one of the reasons Dunbar is a busy place, even if it is a little loud. You get a great view of the mountains. ~ Regina, age 10.

In Dunbar, you have everything you need to live. It has food stores, clothing stores, a bank, a hairdresser and it has some restaurants. I also like Dunbar because the people who are in Dunbar are very kind and friendly. I think Dunbar is awesome! ~ Cameron, age 10.

It has a really big library. I really like Chaldecott Park because I like riding my bike in it. I like the bakery because it has a lot of sweets and the cakes. Sometimes I go to Stong’s. ~ Ethan, age 8.

I live here and it is a very nice place. I play baseball there too. It has nice stores and a movie theatre and that is why I like Dunbar. ~ Calvin, age 10.

They have a lot of cool shops like Splash and the library and all the clothes shops. I love the forest, park and the community centre. I also love the bakeries, especially Butters. And the pet (food) store. ~ Caitlin, age 8.


I love the books at Dunbar Library, each one has a great story! There are so many books that it’s almost impossible to read all of them! Each age has a section of books to read! ~ Renata, age 8.

I like Dunbar because there is a Dairy Queen and a Tim Hortons. I like the Dairy Queen because during the summer nights we can walk over and have ice cream. ~ Elena, age 10.

There are so many awesome stores like Splash, Kokopelli’s, Stong’s and a great movie theatre! I also love to explore Dunbar park, the field and the forest. I live in Dunbar and the people there are very nice. My mom always goes to Stong’s for groceries. I love all the different activities at the Community Centre. Dunbar is fantastically awesome! ~ Elise, age 8.

It has DQ and restaurants. I like Stong’s because it has good food. ~ Ben, age 10.
