The population of the City is expected to age over the next 25 years. By 2035, the percentage share of all age groups below 65 years is expected to decline. However, the share of those aged 65-74 is expected to rise from 9.1% to 11.4% whilst the percentage aged 75+ is also expected to rise from 8.9% to 13.4%.

Unemployment The government’s preferred measure of unemployment is the ILO Rate. This is an internationally comparable measure based on information gathered from the UK wide Labour Force Survey. At sub-region level however, the survey based ILO Rate lacks statistical robustness and therefore unemployment is measured via the claimant count (those claiming Job Seekers Allowance). Benefit rules means that this measure does not capture the totality of joblessness nevertheless it provides a useful gauge of trends in the local labour market. The City’s claimant unemployment rate stood at 4.7% in February 2014, this compares to 5.8% in February 2013.

Dundee’s claimant rate remains above the Scottish average of 3.3% in February 2014.

Jobseekers allowance claimant rates in Dundee stood at a historical low of 3.4 in 2008. However, the impact of the recession resulted in the rate rising to 5.8 in 2013.

The number of full time jobs fell from 48,100 in 2011 to 47,000 in 2012.

Median earnings in Dundee increased from £396.7 in 2003 to £493.3 in 2013, a rise of 24.4%. Earnings growth in Dundee was lower than Scotland where the median rose by 33.3% and the UK where earnings rose 28.1%.

Business News January 14 to March 14 (News stories for years 1996-2013 available on request)

January 2014 – Dundee Airport operators secure a new flight to replace the CityJet service to London City which is due to be withdrawn at the end of March. From 30 March Flybe flights to London Stansted become available. Passenger numbers in Dundee have fallen in recent years, and maintaining a regular route to London was seen as crucial to the airport's future.

January 2014 – Gows Gun Shop on Union Street closes after more 150 years of trading.

January 2014 - High-end luggage firm LAT56, which was established in Glasgow nearly seven years ago, has switched its headquarters to Dundee. Headed by Strathclyde University design engineering graduate Kevin Fox, the business has moved to District 10, a space for creative businesses constructed from 37 recycled shipping containers on the site of a former railway goods yard.

February 2014 - Nutscene (1922) Ltd, founded in Dundee in 1922. Makers of garden twine and gift ware, the company sells to countries including Australia, Japan, South Africa and USA, with exports now accounting for 40% of their business.

February 2014 – Sleeperz Hotels, the UK budget hotel company, is to open its fourth UK hotel in partnership with Dundee City Council, as part of a £1bn regeneration of Dundee’s waterfront and railway station. Sleeperz Hotel Dundee will be a 120 bedroom property in a stylish curved concourse above a new £22m redeveloped rail station, with panoramic views over the River Tay and onto the new waterfront plaza.

February 2014 – Dundee Malmaison Hotel opens on 5 February. Malmaison have taken out a 35-year lease on the building, with the option of a further 35 years.

March 2014 - Land Securities Group sell the Overgate Centre to Legal & General Property in a deal valued at £125.3 million. The centre totals 420,000 sq ft of retail space, with 70 retail units and two multi-storey car parks. Major retailers at Overgate include Debenhams and Primark.

March 2014 –Dundee Waterfront wins the Judges Award for Merit at the Scottish Property Awards. March 2014 – Construction and renewable energy firm, Kilmac, opens its new base in Dundee. Employing 10 staff, five of whom are new employees, the company plans to grown its renewables team to over 30 by 2015.
