But as time goes on, and filming techniques improve, these films become so realistic and so intense that it’s almost as if you are there with the soldiers on the front lines. Saving Private Ryan is a great exam- ple of this, and almost certainly an inspiration for what Christopher Nolan has created with his newest film, Dunkirk. Dunkirk, based on real life events, is the story of a group of British, French, and Belgium soldiers who have been forced to the coast by German forces during World War II. Surrounded, and being picked apart methodically, the British are in a race against time to get their men off the beach and home safely before they are all killed. It’s hard to say what my favorite Christopher Nolan film is. They are all great, aside from The Dark Knight Rises, which in my opinion is his only misstep, albeit a very small one. But Dunkirk stands out to me simply because it is the first time that Nolan has dealt with true events. Personally, I knew very little about the events of Dunkirk. Everyone, especially in the US, knows what happened on the beaches of Normandy. It’s been ingrained in our minds in everything from the history books you studied in school to the many films made about that particular event in history. But as for what happened on the beach of Dunkirk, it is something that I was mostly unaware of. Because of that, and I can say this with all honesty, it made this film that much more intense. From the opening scene, I was on the edge of my seat and my heart was racing. These soldiers were in a literal race against time with the odds stacked against them, and Nolan captured what that must have felt like nearly perfectly. After each action beat, you as an audience member are given moments to catch your breath before your heart is pulsing all over again, hoping that help arrives before it’s too late. Much of the credit should also go to Hans Zimmer for his incredible scoring of this film. If you listen closely as you’re watching, you can hear a ticking clock that runs throughout the score, which further intensifies some of the most realistic depictions of war that I’ve ever seen. As much as I don’t mind gore, and let’s be honest, war produces some of the most horrific images you can pos- sibly imagine; I found it rather refreshing that Nolan and his produc- ers didn’t rely on gore to display the horrors of war, giving this film that needs to be seen a chance to reach a broader audience. Also, the cast deserves a ton of credit. There was really no standout performance, because everyone was great. Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Hardy provide a few familiar faces, but everyone else just blends in adding to the realism by not being a distraction. Even Harry Styles was pretty impressive despite it was his first role. This isn’t a showcase film for any particular actor, but rather a showcase of the story itself, a moment in history where everyday people risked it all to bring their boys home. During the summer, it’s rare that we are given a film of this nature. Most of what we see in these months is just CGI popcorn fun. Dunkirk is much more than that; it is an experi- ence, one that will stand the test of time and in the end, be considered one of the best war films ever.
