Chair’s Update

Welcome to our summer edition. There’s a lot going on in the next few weeks. DGPC’s new grounds maintenance contractors started work in the village at the beginning of April and they’ve been working hard giving the village a good spring clean and tidy up.

The village green, recreation ground and Longford Meadow certainly look a lot better and there’s further work to be done over the coming months as we all seek to make Dunton Green greener. It was disappointing that as we were delivering the Spring newsletter and were pleased to have another defibrillator in the village there were a

few incidents of anti-social behaviour. The defibrillator on the shopping parade

was damaged, there were off road bikes racing around the field beyond the recreation ground, youths were damaging cars & plants in Rye Lane and there were arrests for drug dealing. The Ryewood estate has recently had a number of attempted car break ins. Fortunately, despite this glitch, such incidents are rare and it would certainly wrong to think life in Dunton Green is like that all the time. I think it’s because they are so seldom it makes them feel more shocking when they do occur. It takes us all to make this a better a place to live in and at the Parish Council we do all we can to make just a little bit of difference. Please report all criminal incidents, no matter how small, so that we get the support the village needs from the Police and Sevenoaks District’s Community Safety team. See pages 28 & 29 for contact

details.

It was lovely to meet many of you at our recent Annual Parish meeting. A special thanks to the Ryewood residents who not only attended their residents’ meeting but then came along to the APM too. This year’s KALC Community Award was given to Tim Fox

in recognition of all the help he gives in supporting functions run for the older residents. Tim Fox (centre), Tracy Godden Clerk to DGPC (left), Freda England

….Chair’s Update

The local elections this year for Parish and District Councillors were uncontested in Dunton Green. I’m pleased to say that all our existing councillors were re-elected and we also have a

new Parish Councillor - James Copeland. We’ll let him introduce himself in our next edition. Our District Councillors Kim Bayley and Cameron Brown continue to represent Dunton Green’s needs, however I, like many others, would like to see more of them at Parish Council meetings and events. If you need to contact the

District Councillors, or indeed your Kent County Council representative, Nick Chard, please see page 31 for their contact details.

Saturday 29th June is going to be a community fun day for

Dunton Green - ‘Summer at the Pavilion’. There are already over 30 stalls and various activities & entertainments planned. There will be a hog roast and the PTA will be running a Pimm’s & Beer bar. Admission to the event is free, so come along and maybe bring a picnic. Fingers crossed for the weather! More details can be found on the back cover of this edition of Dunton Green

News and there is a special entry form for a draw to win a pair of tickets to an England international football game! Not the most exciting project, but certainly vital, we have just finished the conversion of all of the Parish Councils’ streetlights to LED. This will give us a considerable saving on future electricity bills, with LED lights being much more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. We are still waiting for KCC’s support to put up new beacons at the zebra crossings. Work continues for a planned bike trail in Price’s Wood - we should have more news on this exciting proposed new community facility in the autumn edition.

We received the good news that due to some extra funding from SDC, Sarah Tickner our Community Development worker who covered Yulia’s maternity leave, will now be able to stay on until March next year. You can meet them both at the Summer in the Pavilion event which they have been planning and organising over recent months. They’ve also been responsible for our new basketball coaching sessions which started in April for 10-14 year

olds and which have been very well received.

Enjoy the summer in Dunton Green

Building a Community

What is a community? According to an online dictionary it’s this: “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” But I think it’s more than this. A community is a living, breathing thing, and for it to survive it needs it’s members to get involved.

Does this mean we all have to traipse along to every event, fun day, coffee morning etc? Well, no. Not if you don’t want to. While these are all great and important to those people who are involved, they’re not for everyone. However, you might find something that appeals to you – a fitness class, ballroom dancing, a lunch

club, a walking group, or something else entirely. And here’s a thing: if there’s nothing for you – maybe start something yourself.

Page 13: DUNTON GREEN NEWS

When I was I teenager I got into punk rock. There wasn’t much excitement to be had in my corner of South East London, so we got a band together, put gigs on in the back rooms of pubs and found like minded people; and together we made a community. Soon we were helping each other out, getting involved in causes we believed in, supporting other bands and artists, meeting a lot more like-minded people and along the way making our lives more interesting and exciting. I made friendships that have lasted 30 years and counting.

So if you’re into gardening, or making furniture, or crafts, or baking, or books, or painting (or punk rock!) or whatever, there could be other people in the area also sitting in their front rooms similarly wishing there was someone else nearby who shared their interest.

In these days of social media connecting us all together, it’s easier than ever to find like-minded people. There are Facebook groups locally connecting villages and communities: Dunton Green Chitter Chatter; Dunton Green Parish Council; Save Dunton Green and Surrounding Areas Natural Beauty; Dunton Green Primary Parents and Carers; Dunton Green News and Chat and more. And that’s just Facebook and specifically for DG. All of these are great ways to get to know people nearby. But there’s another side of community, another way of getting involved. It seems small, but actually forms the bedrock. And it’s this: Take an interest. Simple. Instead of walking past a bit of litter – pick it up; instead of ignoring some graffiti – report it to SDC; instead of grumbling about potholes – report them to KCC.

Spend some time to explore the area; use the local shops, open spaces, restaurants and pubs; get to know your neighbours. You might make a change for the better, meet people, and make friends.

PLANNING (for full details visit the planning tracker on the DGPC website - www.duntongreenpc.org.uk)

PLANNING APPLIC ATIONS 18/03834/FUL Land adjoining 209 London Road Erection of a detached dwelling with alterations to access, parking, roof and elevations of main dwelling. DGPC-Object. The Parish Council supports the concerns of neighbours with regard to loss of light & privacy. The Parish Council feels that the proposal in its current form is an over-intensification of the site; there is an overall loss of parking space, to the detriment of the existing property. Additionally, the Planning, Access & Design statement appears to have several irregularities within it – reference to ‘ West Street’? It is a cut & paste document which creates an element of confusion as it clearly does not relate in its entirety to this specific site. 19/00450/HOUSE 21 London Road. Formation of vehicular access and proposed off road parking bay for 2 vehicles. DGPC-Support 19/00110/FUL North Downs Business Park Limepit Lane Demolition of existing building and ready-mix concrete plant and erection of warehouse building. DGPC-Support 19/00241/MMA-Dunton Green Free Church Station Road Amendment to 18/03451/MMA. DGPC-No Comment. There is a lack of information within the documentation provided and so the Parish Council is not able to comment. There is no explicit explanation within any of the papers provided of the nature of minor material amendment. There is a reference to Condition 2 of 18/03451/MMA but no information as to the nature of that Condition. This lack of information is a recurring feature of MMA applications generally. There should not be an assumption in amendment documentation that those providing comments have access to all the background information, including details of numerous conditions. It should be a requirement within an MMA application for there to be an explicit explanation (supported by plans and drawings) of the nature of the amendment. 19/00552/FUL-Whitmore’s of Edenbridge Ltd Mill Road Car valeting shelter. DGPC-Support 19/00805/HOUSE-1 Shabhall Cottage Morants Court Road Single storey roof extension over porch/lobby; conversion of loft and insertion of velux windows with associated works. Sevenoaks District is the local Planning Authority. All queries relating to planning should be made direct to SDC on

01732 227000 or www.sevenoaks.gov.uk

The Town and Country Planning Act 1990 provides the main legal basis of the English Planning system. Further changes have been introduced by the Localism Act 2011. The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) sets out the Government's economic, environmental and social planning policies for England and contains the framework within which Local Plans are developed. The purpose of the NPPF is to help achieve 'sustainable development' that meets their own needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The Planning and compulsory Purchase Act 2004 placed an obligation on local planning authorities to produce a Local Plan (or Core Strategy) shaping how land use and places will change and develop over the next 15 to 20 years. It also sets out a spatial planning strategy — what the general location of the development will be. Planning decisions need to be made in line with the development plan, unless there are good reasons why this should not be done. The reasons are called material considerations and include:

Overshadowing Overlooking or loss of privacy Adequate parking and servicing Overbearing nature of proposal Loss of trees Loss of ecological habitats Design and appearance Layout and density of buildings Effect on listed building(s) and Conservation areas Access or highway safety Traffic generation Noise and disturbance from the scheme Disturbance from smells Public visual amenity, but not loss of private individual's view Disturbance from smells Flood risk

There are a number of areas that cannot be considered as material / relevant, these include: Loss of value to individual property Loss of view Boundary disputes including encroachment of foundations, gutters Private covenants or agreements The applicant's personal conduct or history The applicant's motives Potential profit for the application or from the application Private rights to light Private rights of way Damage to property Disruption during any construction phase Loss of trade or competitors Age, health, status, background, work patterns of the objector Time taken to do the work Capacity of private drains Building or structural techniques Alcohol or gaming licences

Marking the change to your community church

In the last edition of this magazine we explained that, after 14 years of being involved in village activities, at Dunton Green Faithworks we now see ourselves as the Christian community church in the village.

To demonstrate this when we meet, we decided to have a banner and this has been made by a small group of local ladies over the last 6 months.

The banner was designed after talking to local people about how they see and understand Faithworks – ‘welcoming, family, community, fun, sharing, food, everyone’ were some of the words we were given. These were incorporated in the design and set in the context of Dunton Green as a place – its countryside, roads and railway.

The banner will be up in the pavilion whenever Faithworks meets on Sunday mornings – at Family Fun on the 2

nd and 4

th Sundays, and at our Café for discussion on the first

Sunday, all from 10am.

We hope you will be encouraged to come and join us, to share the welcome we offer and to enjoy a relaxed time with members of the community.

PARISH COUNCIL News Highlights... Whilst elections in Dunton Green this May were

uncontested, we are delighted to welcome James Copeland to the DGPC team. We still have two councillor vacancies so if you would like to get involved please contact the Clerk for details.

The Parish Council is working with the Community Development officers on a Bike Trail project for our younger residents in Price’s Wood. Wading through the bureaucratic red tape is taking time but we hope to have some exciting news on this for the Autumn edition.

The Parish Council has received some very positive comments about the work of its new grounds maintenance contractors, Gardens of England, who have really made such impressive progress in only their first few months. The team will also be taking on the flower beds and various other projects associated with the Parish Council’s land.

A generous donation of a pair of tickets to an England football international match has been made to the Parish Council. Those tickets are the prize in a free draw linked the summer event. See page 39 for details.

In a bid to deter graffiti, the Parish Council is working with Southeastern and SDC, exploring the possibility of a project to provide a mural or ‘StreetArt’ in the tunnel to the station. More on this next time!

DONNINGTON HALL BADMINTON GROUP We are a mixed ability group and anyone who has played badminton is welcome to get back to the game. As there is only one court we are unable to train new players.

We meet every Tuesday afternoon from 2 to 4 pm. It is pay as you go with no joining fee. So if you are only able to come less regularly it is OK with us. You can come and give it a go – the first session is free and we can lend you a racket. Just wear proper sports shoes.

Just turn up (Donnington Hall, Barretts Road) or for more info phone Gill on 01883 722948 or 077909 12741

posting the same incident on social media. This is not only detrimental to how hard the police are working but it also gives a false perspective on

crime figures and increases fear of crime in a location. Social media can be a good

communication tool but we must encourage all residents - victims or those with information - to report it directly to police as this will ensure vital

evidence can be captured and offenders dealt with in the most efficient way possible.

Take the Plunge - Getting Active!

As the weather seems to be finally edging towards spring/summer, many people are venturing outside for the first time in what feels like ages! What better time to think about getting active. But what to do? If you’re not normally sporty, it’s best to start modestly – going for a walk is a great way to get active. If walking’s not possible, try swimming as a good

starting point. With either activity, increase the distance and step up the pace for more of a workout. If you want something more social, there are organised walks on a Saturday morning from 10.00am leaving from the rec. Or

there’s regular Netball, Football and just launched, Basketball all organised in the rec; see elsewhere in this publication for details. Locally in the village there are also: Tae Kwon Do, Pilates, Kuk Sool Won, Tai Chi, Karate and boot camp all available. If you don’t like sport, there are also street dance and ballroom dancing available in the village for a different way of getting active. Then of course there are lots of open spaces for cycling and running, and a

free to use tennis court. Further afield in the area there’s hockey, rugby, football, and running clubs as well as a pool, gyms and other things to get the body moving and the blood pumping! The benefits of being active regularly are many and various: apart from the obvious – fitness, strength, flexibility – many people experience an increase in confidence, concentration, you can reduce your risk of

a heart attack, manage your weight better, have a lower blood cholesterol level, lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers, have lower blood pressure, have stronger bones, muscles and joints and a lower risk of

Page 35: DUNTON GREEN NEWS

35

developing osteoporosis. You may also lower your risk of falls, recover better from periods of hospitalisation or bed rest and (importantly) feel better – with more energy, a better mood, feel more relaxed and sleep better. Getting started can be a struggle, and there are lots of excuses close to hand – it’s cold, wet, I’m tired, not fit enough, I’ve got nobody to go with… But it is just a case of taking the plunge. Try it. If you like it, go again. If you’re not sure, give it a go again. If you really don’t like it, try something else. See if there’s anyone in the class that you can talk to – the teacher/coach is a good place to start – and maybe make a ‘workout buddy.’

Once you’ve found something you like, stick at it. A lot of people find they run out of steam, but it’s important to keep your activity as a regular thing. Set yourself goals (target weight loss/ distances/ times/ achievements/ or whatever, so you can mark, measure and record your progress. You

might find that putting your activity into your diary to keep the time set aside helps you keep to schedule and if you have a ‘workout buddy’ help them stay focussed and motivated. Think about what you wanted to achieve when you started and remember how for you have come already. It’s nice sometimes to look back to see how far you’ve come. It’s imperative too, to listen to your body and be realistic – don’t expect to be Mo Farrah the first time you go running, or Andy Murray the first time you play tennis; pay attention to your injuries etc. and allow yourself time to rest and recover. Most important of all: have fun!

Sevenoaks District Seniors Action Forum

Working together in the interests of people aged 50 plus

Email: [email protected]

Our Forum is an organisation with over 1100 members that supports the over 50’s in the Sevenoaks District. It is run by volunteers. We set out to find out what ”you” the members are concerned about and campaign to get things changed. Our forum is strictly non-party political, although we realise that many of the issues raised may be of a political nature. All 1000+ mem-bers are “The Forum“ with the benefit of a small management committee. You can access the forum on-line, by post or telephone. There are other similar forums across the UK. These were set up following the Community Care Act 1990. Our forum is, therefore, one of many similar forums. Ours was founded in October 2010 at the International Day of the Older Person at the Stag theatre in Sevenoaks at the initiative of Age UK. What We Do is to gather and pass on information via our website, newslet-ters and at meetings, including attendance at village fetes and open days. This helps our members to get up-to-date information on the matters that concern them. We also have meetings with our local politicians, councillors and other organisations such as the Police This is to ensure that “you” the members voice is heard. We know from these meetings and also from a membership survey that the main issues of concern are: Crime and traffic problems, Transport (including local buses and hospital transport), ,Health issues (including Care and support costs), Dementia, Public amenities, Housing for both seniors and younger people. Whilst we deal a lot with both the Sevenoaks and Kent Councils we are not in any way part of their remit, we maintain a very separate operation. The other forums in Kent are geographically based on District Council areas but, like ours, are separate operations. We liaise with other forums, in particular if there are County wide issues. Membership is free to residents of the Sevenoaks District who are over the age of 50. Most of our Members join up when we meet them at village fetes and at events organised by us or by our various partners but we are more than happy to welcome new Members who join through our website or who contact our Membership Secretary. Download and complete the membership form (at www.sdsaf.org.uk) send to; Roger Bryan, 10 Greenside, Swanley, BR8 7ER or email to; [email protected] or call him on 07470 201703
