• Kodaly: Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Op. 12 • Brahms: Quintet for Two Violins, Two Violas and Cello in G major, Op. 111
• Dvořák: Quintet in E-flat major for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Cello, Op. 97
Programme - The myriad inspiration of folk tunes makes up a program of discoveries and delights. If Brahms dabbled in folk music, infusing his Viola Quintet with rustic pleasures - especially in the final coda of the work - Dvořák often created "folk" melodies relying on the harmonic and rhythmic underpinnings of actual folk music. In this case, the melodies and sounds that served as inspiration included the Native Americans he heard sing in his travels to Spillville, Iowa. His "American" quintet is full of wonderful melodies, open and awake to possibility much like the country he found himself in. Kodaly, like Bartok, went to small towns and villages of his native Hungary, searching out and recording local folk songs. This research left an indelible mark on his compositions, and the lovely Serenade that opens the program is no exception. Throughout, the feeling of night is omnipresent, with a middle movement that finds lovers wooing and a finale of late-night revelers dancing and frolicking.

Algoma Conservatory has much to celebrate this year with its move to the historic office building at Mill Square. We simply had to make this the most exceptional concert series in our history. From the first season I have always maintained that great music played by great musicians is breathtaking and its appeal universal. The simple formula is to present great music performed by great musicians. It is then awe inspiring to hear and see the amazing technique of these musicians translated into performances that will touch your soul. As with so many artists of past seasons I am sure that you never expected to see the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in Sault Ste. Marie, but they are coming, and increasingly this is the standard that you expect. And why not! We have the power and will to create what we want in Sault Ste. Marie.
Together, through the early commitment of hundreds of annual subscribers and patrons, we have built an exceptional series that is now known by artists and agents across Canada, as well as in the US and England. We have become a Northern oasis where artists know they will find a packed house, great hospitality and an exceptional audience. Every concert of our 23rd season promises to be outstanding with some of the finest ensembles and soloists in the world. Your subscriptions and support makes this series possible, not only for yourself, but for the whole community.
