During the helicopter stunt, the runners caught on the ropes and as the helicopter rose it threatened toseriously injure 'Savage, John' and Robert De Niro. The actors gestured and yelled furiously to the crew in thehelicopter to warn them. Footage of this is included in the film. The scene where Nick spits in Michael's facewhen the play Russian roulette against each other at the end of the film was improvised by Christopher Walken.Director Michael Cimino convinced Walken to do this, and De Niro was completely surprised by it, as evidenceby his reaction. Meryl Streep improvised many of her lines. Robert De Niro claims this was his most physically

exhausting film. Robert De Niro, who prepared for his role by socializing with actual steelworkers, wasintroduced by his hosts and new friends as Bob, and no one recognized him. Jan Scruggs, a Vietnam veteranwho became a counselor with the U.S. Department of Labor, thought of the idea of building a National Memorialfor Vietnam Veterans after seeing a screening of the film in spring 1979, and he established and operated thememorial fund which paid for it. The cast and crew viewed large amounts of news footage from the war toensure authenticity. The bar was specially constructed in an empty storefront in Mingo Junction, Ohio for$25,000; it later became an actual saloon for local steel mill workers. Robert De Niro visited the homes ofsteelworkers and went to local bars to prepare for the film. U.S. Steel allowed filming inside its Cleveland mill, including placing the actors around the furnace floor, only after securing a $5 million insurance policy. Duringnight filming in Saigon, the heavy rains sometimes forced the cast and crew to climb onto tables in the plaza asrats swam by them, as the crew was confined to the small area during night curfew hours. While filming tookplace on the river in Thailand, the government was overthrown in a military coup; the Revolutionary Committeeguaranteed protection for the crew, assigning an armed guard for every three crew members. Robert De Niroand John Savage performed their own stunts in the fall into the river, filming the 30-foot drop fifteen times in

two days. Rutanya Alda actually struck her head quite hard on the doorway during the first take while beingcarried out of the reception hall; this is why the scene includes John Savage warning her in the take which wasused. The deer which Michael allows to get away was actually an elk - the same one often used on commercialsfor Hartford Insurance. The crew had a very difficult time trying to get the elk to look at them, as it wasapparently used to various noises; it finally looked at them when someone in the crew yawned. John Cazalewas very weak when filming began, and for this reason, his scenes were filmed first. Michael Cimino knew fromthe start that Cazale was dying from cancer, but the studio did not. When they found out, they wanted toreplace Cazale. When Meryl Streep learned of their intentions, she threatened to quit if they did. Cazale diedshortly after filming was completed. In the original script, the roles of Mike and Nick were reversed in the lasthalf of the film. Nick returns home to Linda, while Mike remains in Vietnam, sends money home to help Stan, and meets his tragic fate at the Russian roulette table. Christopher Walken achieved the withdrawn, hollow lookof his character by eating nothing but rice and bananas. During some of the Russian Roulette scenes, a liveround was put into the gun to heighten the actors tension. It was checked to make sure the bullet was not inthe chamber though. The Wedding scene at the church took five days to film. An actual priest was cast.Universal originally balked at Michael Cimino's four hour rough cut, and secretly hired an editor to cut it downto two hours. However, after test audiences responded favorably to the four hour cut, they rehired Cimino. Helater trimmed it down to three hours. Roy Scheider was originally cast as Michael. Was filmed during a very hotsummer, but art directors made the scenery Autumn like by browning the grass and pulling the leaves off oftrees. The church used in the movie was Theodosius Russian Orthodox Cathedral, which is located in Cleveland,Ohio. One can clearly see the name plaque in one scene. All scenes were shot on location (no sound stages).CBS paid $5 million for the exclusive network television broadcast rights for the film. The network (along withNBC and ABC) later backed out when the content was deemed inappropriate. The film made its television debuton election night, 1980, but not on any major network. The choir featured in the wedding scenes was the actualchoir at the church used during filming. They had to sing the hymns more than 50 times. Christopher Walkenwas originally supposed to receive $17,000 for his role as Nick, but his salary was raised to $25,000 becausefilming took longer than was originally planned. The cast and crew slept on the floor of the warehouse wherethe Saigon Russian roulette sequences were shot. Scouts for the film traveled over 100,000 miles by plane,

bus, and car to find locations for filming. The slapping in the Russian roulette sequences was 100% authentic. The actors grew very agitated by the constant slapping, which, naturally, added to the realism of the scenes.George Dzundza completely blows the toast line when the group arrives in the mountains the first time. Hisreaction is legitimate, and a few of the other actors can be seen laughing in response. The wedding receptionscenes were filmed with many extras who were residents of Clairton. During the filming of one of theextravagant dancing sequences, director Michael Cimino yelled cut! and stopped filming. The extras werehaving such a good time that they booed when the order was given. According to a 2003 article, there were twoseparate test screenings: the short version, which was the studio cut, and the long version, which was Cimino'scut. Cimino claimed he hired the projectionist who showed the studio cut, to sabotage the screening by ruiningthe projection. Test audiences subsequently saw Cimino's version which earned good scores, which soonbecame the theatrical release. When movie was being planned during the mid-1970s, Vietnam was still a taboosubject with all major Hollywood studios. It was the English Company EMI (headed by Sir Bernard Delfont) whoinitially arranged financing. Universal got involved with the picture at a much later stage. The film's screenplay,by Michael Cimino and Deric Washburn, was based, in part, on the script "The Man Who Came to Play", a 1975screenplay by Louis Garfinkle and Quinn K. Redeker. A pre-release arbitration dispute secured Garfinkle andRedeker a co-"story by" credit on the film, although the two writers had nothing to do with its making. They

    GOOFS

Errors in geography: The hunting scenes supposedly taking place in the Appalachian Range are obviouslyfilmed elsewhere: The Appalachians are a smooth rolling range, but the scenes show towering, jagged peaks. The scenes were filmed in the Cascade Range, clear across the country.

Crew or equipment visible: During a brief moment, the whole camera crew becomes visible in a shop window.

Continuity: Reversed negative. In the last hunting scene, while chasing the deer, Michael changes from beingleft-handed to right-handed and back again.

Continuity: The level of Michael's beer while he is leaning against the post at the wedding reception goes upafter he drinks.

Edward Nortonhas made it clear that his participation is a result of contractual obligation, not choice. While thethieves are spying on Steve Frezelli in his home, Michael Caine is seen on the large screen television in a clipfrom the movieAlfie(1966). Caine starred in the original The Italian Job(1969). Lyle (Seth Green) claims hewas the creator of Napster, and that Shawn Fanning stole it from him. It shows a flash back of Lyle sleeping, and a person taking a disk out of the PC that has Napster on it. The person is really Shawn Fanning, the creatorof Napster. When Shawn Fanning steals the idea of Napster, the bottom of a Metallica poster can be seen on

the wall. Metallica was one of the bands that brought about the end of Napster. Two electric-powered MiniCoopers, and one Mini Cooper S works had to be specially built for the film, since gasoline-powered vehicles arenot allowed to operate in L.A.'s subway system. The red Mini Cooper driven by Stella at the beginning of thefilm is one of the Mini Coopers from the original The Italian Job (1969). Director F. Gary Gray was unsatisfiedwith the film's box office performance on its first run and had it re-released in theaters in late August 2003. Ininterviews, Jason Statham said that in addition to the stunt driving course they all received, he got two days'driving tuition from Damon Hill, the British ex-world champion Formula 1 driver. However, all the cast membersacknowledge that Charlize Theron was easily the best driver among them. 32 Minis were used throughout theshooting. Screen writers Donna Powers andWayne Powers say in an interview featured in the DVD that theyhadn't watched the 1969 original movie before agreeing to write the script. After that, they only watched itonce. This was on purpose because they didn't want to copy the movie, they wanted to make their own movieinspired by the original one. The production shut down Hollywood Boulevard and Highland for seven days forthe shooting. First time in cinematic history according to director F. Gary Gray in an interview featured in theDVD. The Metro tunnel set was so huge that it wouldn't fit in any soundstage in Los Angeles. It was built in the

hangar were the first space shuttle was assembled. They used every inch available at that hangar. WhileCharlie Croker's line: "You ready to create the biggest traffic jam in the history of Los Angeles?" appears in thetrailer, it doesn't appear in the theatrical release. In the original script, "fine" stood for Fucked-Up, Insecure,Neurotic, and Emotional. In an Easter Egg on the DVD, Seth Green improvises different versions of his mockingcommentary as Handsome Rob (Jason Statham) seduces the cable TV repairwoman. SPOILER: After stealingthe gold back from Steve, Handsome Rob buys an Aston Martin Vanquish. After being released from prison,Michael Caine picks up an Aston Martin from a parking garage in The Italian Job (1969).

    GOOFS

Continuity: During the chase, the blue Mini Cooper gets dented on the right side. Later on, the right side showsup undamaged. Continuity: When the crew meet to get phones and IDs, Lyle rides up shakily on a yellowmotorcycle and drops it to the right of the red Mini, with the front wheel pointed roughly at the right side of theMini. In the shot showing them departing, however, the motorcycle is shown on the foreground to the left of thered Mini, and it is pointing away from the Mini. Continuity: When the Minis are seen driving down the stairs theyhave dual central exhaust pipes (Mini Cooper S). In later shots on the street they are seen with single exhaustpipes on the right-hand side (Mini Cooper). Continuity: When Lyle checks the armored trucks for their ridelevel, the number of the truck is clearly seen by the rear wheel. The number is not there in other shots.Continuity: After Stella has successfully opened the safe in the metro, the drill that was stuck in the safe's doorafter the glass cracked disappears. Crew or equipment visible: While Stella is driving to the train, you canbriefly see the reflection on the driver side window of a cameraman sitting in the passenger seat. Continuity:When they meet in the Alps, the lake is covered with ice. The van falls through the ice, and we see pieces of icefloating in the hole created by the van. At the end of that scene, however, we see the lake totally free of ice.Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Skinny Pete says "Mother Freakin' Ukranians" his mouth clearly says"Fucking". Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Steve is being dragged away by the Ukranians you hear him

plead "Come on Charlie!" but his mouth never moves. Continuity: The amount of blood in Steve's mouth afterCharlie decks him in the caf changes oinconsistently between shots. Continuity: When the team is in thewarehouse and discover Steve is fleeing with the gold, the basketball that Charlie and Lyle are playing with,

jumps around improbably between shots. Audio/visual unsynchronized: In the chase scene, the motorcyclesused are BMWs with boxer engines (flat twins), but the sound effects are from inline fours. Factual errors:During the scene where Napster and Handsome Rob are watching the Netcom employees in the cark park,Napster is using a camera. The lens is retracted meaning that the camera is either switched off, or in imageplayback mode, not a mode where auto-focus could be used or pictures taken. Crew or equipment visible:When Charlie is being chased by Steve in the helicopter, he pulls a 180 when he sees the truck blocking his way. When he starts up again, and the shot shifts to ground level, you can see the reflection of the right front wheelin the safety shield that's in front of the door camera. Incorrectly regarded as goofs: Because the letters ofthe "Hollywood" sign are on a hill with an uneven, undulating surface, they're not all in the same plane. Thismeans that from some angles it really does look as though the sign says "OHLLYOWOD". Continuity: Stella'shair when she and Charlie are up in her bedroom talking about Steve and her father. Continuity: When the boat

enters the Venetian garage, the canal is very narrow. When they leave again, the canal is very wide.Continuity: When the Cadillac pulls up in the scrap yard to pick up Mashkov, at first it is a black Cadillac Seville.

There is a cutaway to some equipment in the yard, and in the next shot of the front of the car pulling up next toMashkov, it is now a Cadillac CTS. Continuity: The number on Stella's hotel room when Charlie knocks changesfrom white, block numbers in the close frame to cursive, metal numbers in the long shot. Anachronisms: Fromthe interior it's obvious that the "old-style" Austin that Mini Stella drives in Philadelphia isn't a classic US-legalMini, which were last imported in 1967, but rather a European-spec Mini from the late-'90s. Continuity: After

Stella parallel parks her red vintage mini Cooper while driving at full speed, we see through her windshield thevehicle in front of her 5 to 10 feet away. After she gets out her car is shown to be parked only 2 or 3 feet away.Crew or equipment visible: When the van carrying the gold falls down in the underground a chain "helping" itto fall is visible next the front wheels.

Director Cameo: [Kurt Wimmer] 1. Silhouetted figure in the Grammaton Cleric introduction with narration,2. Rebel who is pushed up against the column in the warehouse raid and executed. In certain scenes, themuzzle flash of the pistols and rifles fired by the Clerics and guards will reveal the Tetragrammatron insignia.Grammaton Cleric wristwatch used in the film is an Android Alien watch with a black face, no maker name onthe dial. The poem that Partridge reads in the church is "He wishes for the Cloths of Heaven" by William ButlerYeats. The William Butler Yeatspoem used was published in the collection The Wind Among the Reeds (1899).

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and thedark cloths Of night and light and the half-light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on mydreams. Two hundred people were interviewed for the role of Partridge and filming had already started whenLucas Foster brought Sean Bean in, having convinced him to take the role. The pistol-whip fight between JohnPreston and the officers took only 30 minutes to film. The cars driven by the Grammaton Clerics are CadillacSevilles with exteriors and interiors painted totally white. The dress uniform worn by Preston in the not withoutincident shootout was based on the mourning uniform worn by Bruce Lee in Jing wu men (1972). Kurt Wimmerhad originally wanted Dominic Purcell for the lead role as Senior Grammaton Cleric John Preston, but thestudios didn't want to trust the title role to a (at that time) unknown British actor. So they cast him as SeamusThe Resistance Fighter in the opening of the film instead. The film was not given a wide release because it hadalready run into profit as a result of overseas sales, and Miramax didn't want to risk turning a money makerinto a loss. The pistols used by the Grammaton Clerics are Beretta M93R fully automatic machine pistols. Thesame pistol that Robocop carried though altered differently. Body count: 236. Aside from War movies, holds the

record for highest body count. The painting of the young girl during the opening raid sequence is "The StoryBook" by Adolphe-William Bouguereau. The music that Preston listens to on the Victrola is 'Ludwig VanBeethoven' 's 9th Symphony, First Movement. The puppy used in the movie was a Bernese Mountain dog. Thenoises the puppy makes (barks, whines, yelps etc) weren't actually made by the dog at all, but by an actor whospecializes in dog impersonations. Writer and director Kurt Wimmer invented the martial arts style ofgunfighting for this movie in his backyard. The name of the emotion suppressing drug, Prozium is a slycombination of Prozac, and Valium, which both have calming effects. All the orchestral sounds are samples fromMedia Ventures' private collection, no symphonic orchestra was recorded. "Real" instruments include electricguitars and some percussion. The 'kendo' type swords used during the sparing scene were designed speciallyfor the film and are turned wood which broke quite easily during filming because Bale and Taye were reallywhacking each other with them. According to Kurt Wimmer at the Atlanta Q&A only Christian Bale had actuallybeen offered the role of Preston. The inspiration for the cityscapes and the design of Libria come mainly fromthe works of Hugh Ferriss, an early 20th century conceptual artist. The shotgun used by the trooper to shootthe dogs is actually a Walther WA-2000 sniper rifle, minus the scope. Originally, the drug Prozium was namedLibrium (hence the term "People of Libria" as often referred to throughout the film). However, Librium turns outto be a registered trade name for the anti-anxiety drug Chlordiazepoxide. The name was quickly changed toProzium.

Two different actresses played Preston's wife. The "condemnation archive footage" was filmed first, andfeatured Alexa Summer. However, when it was time to film the scene where she was arrested, she could not befound. Maria Pia Calzone had to take her place. As a result, there's two separate credits, Summer is credited as"Viviana Preston", while Maria Pia Calzone was credited as "Preston's Wife", even though they are supposed tobe the same character.

Continuity: At theraid with Brandt, Preston takes off his gloves and feels the bullet holes running along the wall, where hediscovers the secret room. Yet when he enters the room we see him taking off the gloves again. Continuity: Inthe opening sequence when the policemen run around the side of the car, we can see an already smashed rearwindow. This is seen before the criminals start shooting.

Continuity: The revealing "Freedom" photograph becomes wrinkled and then smooth again between shots.Continuity: When Preston calls Partridge out on having the Yeats book in his possession (in the car), the book isa small, thin copy. When Partridge in confronted later in his hideout, the Yeats book becomes larger and muchthicker.

Crew or equipment visible: When John Preston storms into his bathroom while the troops are searching hisapartment, he walks up to the mirror. As he does a camera operator wearing a black baseball hat with whitelettering is visible on the left hand side of the mirror above his left shoulder. Factual errors: Mona Lisa is notpainted on a canvas, it's painted on a wooden plate.

Factual errors: The Mona Lisa in the movie is far too large. The actual size is 77 x 53 cm (30 x 20 7/8 in), farsmaller than the painting depicted in the movie. Continuity: When the troops pull up to Preston in the Nethers,

the lead motorcycles can be seen leaning to the right (screen left) on their kickstands. When Preston does hisbackward somersault off the middle bike, it's parked straight up and down and the fairing is missing.

Continuity: During the final swordfight, Preston slices Brandt's coat open. In the first shot, two pistols (still intheir holsters) fall out of the coat. In the next shot, as the pistols hit the ground, only one pistol is in its holster, and the second holster has disappeared. Continuity: In the pistol whipping sequence, two sets of spikes comeout of the magazines. When you see Preston's pistol in slow motion about to hit a guards faceplate, there are nospikes present.

Revealing mistakes: After Preston drops off the puppy, he gets into his car and shuts the door. This film isrunning in reverse - you can see smoke is billowing into the muffler, instead of out. Continuity: The grey/greendoor is riddled with holes when the two guards are killed, but after Bale passes through it, the door is intactagain.

Continuity: During the gun battle in the corridor outside DuPont's office, some shots show Preston's pistolsloaded with the weighted clips before he actually loads them.

Continuity: When Preston places the puppy back into the truck of his car, he takes his coat off for the dog torest on and is seen with a black shirt. In the next shot, his coat is back on.

Continuity: When Preston shows the picture of Partridge to Mary, the picture is shown lying on the table

as he walks out of the room. In the next shot, he is sitting at his desk looking at the picture, even though he

    left it behind.

The driving force behind the film was 'Burton, Richard' 's son, who wanted to see his father in a good old-fashioned adventure movie. Burton approached producer Elliott Kastner for ideas, who asked Alistair MacLean. At that time, most of MacLean's novels had either been made into films, or were in the process of being filmed.Kastner persuaded MacLean to write a new story. Six weeks later, MacLean delivered the script. Clint Eastwoodwas reluctant to receive second billing to Burton, but agreed after being paid $800,000. The "Schloss Adler" isactually the "Schloss Hohenwerfen" in Austria. At the time of filming, the castle was being used as a police

training camp. There are no cable cars near Schloss Hohenwerfen. Hence the Cable Car shooting is donesomewhere else.

An accident during one of the action scenes left Kastner and director Brian G. Hutton badly burnt. DespiteEastwood's reputation for violence in other films, his character kills more people in this film than any otherEastwood character. The Junkers 52 used in the film was still in use with the Swiss air force at the time. TheSwiss also supplied the T-6 Texan trainers posing as "German fighters". Alistair MacLean wrote the script, whichwas later converted into novel. For this reason the movie follows the book faithfully. The registration number ofthe motorcycle is WH 62323.

    GOOFS

Anachronisms: Helicopters weren't widely used in military operations until well after World War II, andespecially not in the 3rd Reich. The helicopter shown is a model which wasn't built during the war. Continuity:When Shaffer starts the cable car and runs to it to jump on himself, it doesn't actually start moving until he isnearly aboard. Revealing mistakes: During the classic corridor shootout between Schaeffer and the Nazis, thesoldier who gets hit lying at the other end flies backwards before the ricochet charges in front of him go off.Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Christiansen fires at Smith through the roof of the cable car, he fires fiveshots yet the pistol can be heard to click empty on the fifth.

Continuity: When Smith kicks Christiansen in the face on the roof of the cable car, there is already blood onChristiansen's face. Audio/visual unsynchronized: When Smith shoots the radio operator twice in the back, the second blood bag fails to go off in sync with the gunshot.

Factual errors: Schaffer's firing a machine pistol in each hand simultaneously would require almost superhuman

strength. Crew or equipment visible: When the captured German Alpine Post Bus races throughout theairfield, Schaffer and Mary shoot several small jeeps which flip over. As they do, the rope that flipped them canbe seen being pulled off screen. Crew or equipment visible: When Smith leads the group across the railroadtracks in Werfen, members of the film crew are reflected in the windows.

Continuity: When Major Smith goes into the Bier Keller, he is wearing an officer's peaked cap. He takes it offand places it on the table and we never see it again. (Apparently, it was stolen from the set during the lunchbreak.). Continuity: When the traitor is shot while dangling from a rope outside the castle, the close-up showshim wearing a standard German field gray uniform. In the next shot, as he plummets to his death, he is wearinga camouflaged winter overcoat. Continuity: The bullet holes in the back of the bus appear then disappearduring the final chase. Continuity: When Major Smith drives the captured German Alpine Post Bus toward theline of planes at Oberhausen Airfield, you can see that the Horizontal Stabilizer (small wing at the tail) of the firstplane has already been destroyed, probably from a previous take. Continuity: When Mary Elison climbs out of

the river, her hair is wet/dry/wet between shots.

Revealing mistakes: When the metal canisters which landed by parachute at the beginning of the film are firstseen, there is an obvious trail through the snow leading into the far trees, indicating the canisters were placedrather than parachuted into position. Continuity: When they prepare to leap into the river, the cable carappears to be over the middle of the river, perhaps even a close to the far bank. But when they do leap, the first

jumper lands close the near bank and the cable car moves over the river once again. Factual errors: BothTurner and Smith discuss the scandal to MI6 should the scandal of his treason get out. However, in 1939 theNazis exposed MI6's networks in Europe, and the Special Operations Executive took over its functions inwartime.

Anachronisms: The American General being rescued is wearing a patch on his left shoulder that is the patchworn by the Army's Berlin Brigade. That patch was not issued till 1963. Factual errors: During the briefing,

early in the movie, the team is told that General Carnaby had been on his way to meet with his Russiancounterpart regarding D-Day plans and that the meeting place was to have been Crete. That would be impossibleas Crete had been seized in a German airborne assault in the spring of 1941 and remained in German hands

until the war ended. Continuity: As Major Smith and the group walk past the wood shed at Werfen theirshadows disappear between shots.

Revealing mistakes: When the Nazi car (after Smith and Shaeffer's arrest) is pushed into the ravine, itexplodes without apparent reason before touching the ground. The same happens to the planes of the airfield

being lightly hit on the tail by the German Alpine Post Bus. Continuity: Smith radios HQ and tells them heis..."effecting entry within the hour." At HQ, Smith's transmission of "Broadsword calling Danny boy" is heard ata significantly faster rate than Smith spoke it into his radio.

Continuity: After Smith and Schaffer initially climb into the Schloss Adler, Schaffer puts on a cap and Smithdoesn't have one as they walk out the door of a room and into a hall. Less than a minute later, both of them arewalking down another hall, and Smith now has a hat similar to Schaffer's.

Continuity: The scenes showing the escape out the window shows the stunt people rappelling normally with fullrigging in the long shots, yet in the close up shots the actors are just holding onto the rope and they were notshown rigging the ropes for rappelling and did not show the use of any "D" rings or other rappelling gear.

Revealing mistakes: Near the end of the corridor firefight, Schaffer retreats into the room and a Germansoldier throws a grenade through the door. In the widescreen version you can see the grenade strike the doorframe and bounce back at the actor's feet, yet there is an explosion inside the room where the grenade wouldhave landed. And grenades do not explode in a fireball as shown in this, (and other) movies. Revealingmistakes: The tree stump of a tree supposedly blown off by dynamite shows clear signs of being cut down witha chainsaw.

Screenwriter Daniel Pyne was paid over $1 million for his initial draft of this screenplay.

Brian De Palma was (briefly) considered to direct this film, a suggestion made by one of De Palma's formerrepresentatives. However, the idea was ultimately nixed by producer Scott Rudin. 'Neil Jordan' was also brieflyconsidered to direct this remake.

In developing her character,Meryl Streep watched several political talk shows. She didn't watch the originalfilm until after filming wrapped. In developing his character, Liev Schreiber watched footage of Robert F.Kennedy.

Emma Thompson, Glenn Close and Jessica Lange where considered for the role of Eleanor Shaw. When Ben andRosie are in her "cousin's" apartment, there are pictures ofKenneth Utt beneath the poster of a play.

The movie opens with Marco's and Shaw's fellow soldiers playing a card game; this is a reference to TheManchurian Candidate (1962), in which cards play a very important role in the plot.

In Rosie's cousin's apartment, there is a poster of an angel crouching down. This is a print from the cover art ofTony Kushner's play "Angels in America". 'Jeffrey Wright' , who plays Al Melvin in the film, starred in both theoriginal staging of the play and also the HBO dramatization "Angels in America" (2003) (mini).

Entertainment Weekly reported that Meryl Streep watched political talk shows to prepare for her role: "anythingwith Peggy Noonan, Karen Hughes... it's hard to get more hyperbolic than that.".

Liev Schreiber was handpicked by Paramount Pictures boss Sherry Lansing for the title role.

If the letters in Noyle's last name are rearranged, they spell Yen Lo, the name of the Chinese character in thesame role in The Manchurian Candidate(1962).

In Rosie's bathroom there is a poster for a theatrical production of "Othello" featuring Jos Ferrer, the father ofMiguel Ferrerwho plays Colonel Garret in this film. Before this movie's release, Paramount set up two officialwebsites: one site with movie information, and one site that appeared to be a promotional tool for the

(fictional) Manchurian Global Corporation depicted in the movie. The corporation website gave no indication ofits connection to the movie except a few references to its sponsorship of Dr. Atticus Noyle's Alzheimer'sresearch. Similar advertisements for fictional medical procedures and clinics were also produced as parts of theadvertising campaigns for Gattaca (1997), Godsend (2004), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).Besides these films listed, Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) also has a advertising campaign featuring"Regenerator", a fictional product developed by the Umbrella Corporation.

Production Assistant Chris Rodriguez's photo is used on the front page of the newspaper that Kimberly Elisepicks up on the train, under the caption, "Muslim Yale student murdered by angry mob." On the wall of SenatorJordan's office is a poster for the Vietnam POW / MIA "You are not forgotten" campaign (the black on whitesilhouette).

Plot holes: Constitutionally, if Marco had killed the President-elect, Vice President-elect Shaw would not havenecessarily become President, in that the Electoral College had not yet met. With no provision for a new electionbefore the January 20th inauguration, the selection of the next President would have been made by the House ofRepresentatives with no guarantee that they would select Shaw.

Factual errors: A TV interview is said to take place in "Desert Storm, 1992" when in fact Desert Storm was in1991.

Continuity: In the opening shot of Rosie's cousin's apartment, the shower door has swans etched on it. WhenBen takes a shower, the swans are gone and the glass is pebbled.

Factual errors: The model of Tom Jordan's kayak is designed in a way that, when it turns upside down, thewater resistance pushes the kayakist off the kayak, preventing him from drowning. Even when this doesn'thappen, an experienced kayakist like Jordan would know how to easily get out of it.

Revealing mistakes: The length of Tom Jordan's paddle (it's too short for his height) and the way he rows thekayak reveals that he's not an experienced kayakist as the movie states.

Plot holes: SPOILER: Apparently, FBI surveillance cameras come complete with big red record lights.

Plot holes: SPOILER: Apparently, FBI undercover agents are not wired remotely. Instead they carrydictaphones, mark up the tapes clearly with the target's name, then keep them in their handbags, which theyleave lying around while they sleep.

Continuity: SPOILER: When we see Shaw giving Marco the gun (before Marco shoots pvt. Ingram), pvt Baker'shands are not tied down. Under one minute later, when we see Shaw suffocating pvt. Baker, Baker's hands arestrapped to the wheelchair.

Revealing mistakes: When Shaw enters his penthouse and gets the phone call from his mom we see the emptyjack on the side where a phone cord should be hooked into the wall.

Continuity: The civilian guide in Kuwait is listed in the credits as "Laurent Tokar," but both the newscast thatannounces Shaw's nomination and the newscast describing Tokar's arrest at the end of the film call him"Laurence Tokar."

They
