DVOŘÁK SYMPHONY NO. 9, FROM THE NEW WORLD
Your gift from Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic
The NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC plays a leading cultural role in New York City, the United States, and the world and connects with up to 50 million music lovers annually through concerts in New York City and on tours and residencies; digital recording series; broadcasts on television, radio, and online; and through wide-ranging education programs and the New York Philharmonic Leon Levy Digital Archives. In the 2016–17 season the New York Philharmonic celebrates its 175th anniversary and Alan Gilbert’s farewell season as Music Director. The Orchestra has commissioned and/or premiered works by leading composers from every era since its founding in 1842, from Dvořák’s New World Symphony to John Adams’s Pulitzer Prize–winning On the Transmigration of Souls, dedicated to the victims of 9/11, and beyond. Internationally renowned, the Philharmonic has appeared in 432 cities in 63 countries, including the groundbreaking 1930 tour of Europe; the unprecedented 1959 tour to the USSR; the historic 2008 visit to Pyongyang, D.P.R.K., the first there by an American orchestra; and the 2009 debut in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Orchestra serves as a resource for its community and the world. The annual free Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer, are complemented by Philharmonic Free
Fridays and education programs including the famed Young People’s Concerts and Philharmonic Schools, an immersive classroom program that reaches thousands of New York City students. The Orchestra established the New York Philharmonic Global Academy — collaborations with partners to train pre-professional orchestral musicians, often featuring performance residencies — building on the flagship collaboration with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai Conservatory of Music, including the formation of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy. Other Global Academy partners include Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West and The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. The Orchestra also has a residency partnership with the University Musical Society at the University of Michigan. The oldest American symphony orchestra and one of the oldest in the world, the New York Philharmonic has made more than 2,000 recordings since 1917, including several Grammy winners, and its self-produced digital recording series continues in the 2016–17 season. Alan Gilbert became Music Director in 2009, succeeding 20th-century musical giants including Bernstein, Toscanini, and Mahler. Alan Gilbert, Conductor

As Music Director of the New York Philharmonic since 2009, Alan Gilbert has introduced the positions of Composer-in-Residence, Artist-in-Residence, and Artist-in-Association; CONTACT!, the new-music series; the NY PHIL BIENNIAL; and the New York Philharmonic Global Academy. Alan Gilbert concludes his final season as Music Director with four programs that reflect themes, works, and musicians that hold particular meaning for him, including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony alongside Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw, Wagner’s complete Das Rheingold in concert, and an exploration of how music can effect positive change in the world. Other highlights include World Premieres; Mahler’s Fourth Symphony; Manhattan, performed live to film; the EUROPE / SPRING 2017 tour; and performance residencies in Shanghai and Santa Barbara. Past highlights include acclaimed stagings of Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd starring Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson (2015 Emmy nomination), and Honegger’s Joan of Arc at the Stake starring Marion Cotillard; 28 World Premieres; The Nielsen Project; the Verdi Requiem and Bach’s B-minor Mass; 2001: A Space Odyssey, performed live to
film; Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony on the tenth anniversary of 9/11; performing violin in Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time; and ten tours around the world. Conductor laureate of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and former principal guest conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Gilbert conducts Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, his first time leading a staged opera there; conducts the foremost European orchestras; and records Beethoven’s piano concertos with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Inon Barnatan. He is Juilliard’s Director of Conducting and Orchestral Studies, and his honors include election to The American Academy of Arts & Sciences (2014), a Foreign Policy Association Medal (2015), Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2015), and New York University’s Lewis Rudin Award for Exemplary Service to New York City (2016).
The New York Philharmonic is celebrating its 175th anniversary season by saluting New York City, its home since 1842. In addition to commissioning and film music projects, the Philharmonic has created The New World Initiative, which seeks to make Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World — the first work given its World Premiere by the Philharmonic that was written in New York to become part of the standard repertoire — a cultural touchstone for as many New Yorkers as possible. In addition to performing the work throughout the season — from the Opening Gala in September through Young People’s Concerts in January to the Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer, in June — the Philharmonic is exploring this
iconic work and, inspired by its famous Largo theme commonly known as “Goin’ Home,” to focus on the theme of “home” through education projects and community outreach. The activities include making the Orchestra’s performances more accessible through live streaming, community engagement, education activities, school curriculum development, and a new app exploring the New World Symphony. A particularly vibrant element of the project involves a call to all New York–based musicians and musical organizations—public and private school students, amateur and professional ensembles, soloists, and groups of more than 200 members performing music from any genre, from symphonic to reggae to jazz and more, from across thefive boroughs—to present their own interpretations of this masterpiece. Those who participate have access to the Philharmonic’s sheet music and a traveling exhibit, and will be listed on a digital hub. As Music Director Alan Gilbert says: “The New World Initiative beautifully achieves one of my aspirations for the New York Philharmonic: to be not just an orchestra that happens to be in New York, but an orchestra that is New York’s orchestra in a very meaningful way.”
