Shooting an interview during the winter in

Germany can get pretty harsh. Short days, no

snow but still freaking cold and strong winds

are the conditions you might have to deal

with daily. There happens to be some decent

indoor parks in Germany, even in Cologne,

but Willow prefers to give all that shit a

big bird. Which leads him to DIY “under

the bridge” spots rather than some heated

wooden curb cuts. Under the infamous

“Mühlheim Bridge” in Cologne anything is

quite gnarly, but this FS Ollie out to Wallride

transfer kinda upped the ante. Freezing

temperatures, concrete which seems to be

way harder than your SoCal park ´crete and a

shitting pigeon, adds up to an environment

you just gotta love - nooooot!

Offenbach is a fairly small town next to Frankfurt - kinda like Jersey to New York. Located right next to each other but still having two different soccer clubs, which hate each other to the max. Some of the most infamous German hip hop artists come from there and you can tell… it´s pretty ghetto. Still though, for the most part those kinda cities are hosting some of the best hidden spots and this school we found strolling around was no exception. Some perfect rails, some banks and removable benches made this spot a German school yard of it´s own kind - perfect for trying out this, “Thing I’ve always wanted to try out on some fitting spot!”

1. Never check in bags. Checking in bags only prolongs the agony of being at the airport. It’s easier to change flights when you’re in the gate areas and you can exit the building faster and sometimes go through security quicker.

2. Carry unusual shaped bags so stewardess have to think twice about what you should do with your bag, carry on or check at the gate. It’s easier to convince them to let you carry it on.

3. Don’t pack what you think you’d need. Pack what you know you need. Traveling light really eliminates all kind of hassles. One of the things that helps me travel light are those Impact boards, they really last longer than the regulars ones. I used to bring a box of at least 6 boards, but now I only need to bring 2 or 3.

4. The more stuff you can hide on/ in your person the more carry on you can take.

5. Have an offline map of the subway systems for the towns you go to. Nothing like playing memory with Russian metro stations.

6. Always have a contact, hotel name, phone number when going to another country. If you don’t, look up a place in the town and just lie, it makes the process so much smoother.

7. Always pretend you’re traveling by yourself when you travel by air, at least till you’re at the gate or outside. There’s always one idiot that will ruin it for the group when crossing a border. Hahaha.

8. Find Starbucks or McDonalds if in need of free Wi-Fi services.

9. Struggling for a hotel in a foreign country, if it gets to late look for 24 hour gaming rooms, you can rent a booth for a few hours and just sleep in there instead of playing video games.

10. When all else fails find the local skate spot. Usually, someone there will help you with whatever you need or at least point you in the right direction.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO SKATEBOARDING?

Y O U S H O U L D K N O W

My older sister was a surfer, and her friends hung out at our house and skated. It was 1976, and I was the goofy little kid who wanted to hang out with them. They were disarming, more of the reject guys in a sense, a little bit on the fringe—definitely not people my folks were stoked to see her hanging around with. I was ten years old and liked that they were all different types. It was really easy to characterize, for example, the guys who played baseball or the

people in school cliques, and I never really felt like I belonged to them. I loved how everything was loose—no confining, no regimentation. It was so accepting. There wasn’t some guy with a whistle and a stopwatch giving the sense of being measured.

My dad wasn’t stoked on it. He said he didn’t want me to skate because I might get hurt, but it was definitely the culture—he called my sister’s friends a bunch of bums who weren’t going anywhere in life. I wasn’t allowed to have a skateboard, and I had never wanted to participate in anything more. My friend gave me a Skateboarder Magazine, and it felt like smuggling. I stared at the pages, and the need for a skateboard incubated in me.

My dad finally agreed to let me skateboard on New Year’s Eve 1976, but with stipulations. There were always stipulations. I’m not sure why I hold onto skateboarding so hard, but the stipulations probably had a lot to do with it. Until I moved out of my parents’ house, I skateboarded under the threat that it could always be taken away—and that made my skating time precious. —RODNEY MULLEN

11. Last influence in your skating: Always my Mom and Dad! RIP!! They never understood why I skated but before they both passed they started to get it and know I loved it and was able to make something out of it, never wanna disappoint them.
