BEYOND THE BLACK STUMP
YESTERDAY’S SOLUTIONTo solve the puzzle youmust enter a number from1 to 9 in the emptysquares. The clues are thenumbers on the blacksquares that give the sumof the solution numbers:above the diagonal areacross clues and belowthe diagonal are down clues. Thus a clue of 3 will produce solutions of 2 and 1 anda 5 will produce 4 and 1 or 3 and 2, but, of course, which squares they go in willdepend on the solution of a clue in the other direction. No number can berepeated in a row or column, so a 4 can only produce 1 and 3, never 2 and 2. Startwith smaller numbers.Solution tomorrow.
• The Sudoku grid of rows and columns is also dividedinto individual 3x3 boxes. The aim of the game is to filleach row, column and 3x3 box with the numbers 1 to 9.You can’t repeat numbers in a row, column or 3x3 box andyou can’t change the numbers already in squares.• Solution tomorrow.
Kakuro
To solve kakuro you must enter a number between 1 and 9 in the empty squares without repeating a digit. The clues are the numbers on the black squares and are the sum of the solution numbers. Above the diagonal are across clues and below are down clues. A block of two squares with a clue of 3 will solve as 2,1 and a 5 will produce 4,1 or 2,3. A 4 can only be 1,3, never 2, 2. There are known combinations of numbers that can help to solve kakuro
and you can find a table of these numbers and a kakuro tutorial at www.sudoku.org.uk/kakuro. Solution published on Monday.

Afew pages into jotting down notesabout the first night of Britishstreet magician Dynamo’s four
almost sold-out shows at Perth Arena, Inoticed there were no words on the page.
Had Dynamo swapped my pen for onewith invisible ink? Had he somehowmade the words vanish? Or was itsomething more logical; that my pen hadsimply stopped working?
Believe what you will. What I wrotematters little because a magic show isone of the hardest of any performancesto review without spoiling the fun foranyone yet to attend.
Even the hard to impress would surelyhave been won over by the show’sanimated sequences that basicallyserved to tell Dynamo’s origin story;how a slightly built boy from the DelphHill housing estate in Bradford, WestYorkshire, used magic and hisimagination to escape a life of bullyingand poverty to become one of the mostin-demand and famous magicians andillusionists in the modern world.
Yes, there were card tricks (he shuffles
and cuts cards like a demon). Yes, therewas a mobile phone trick.
Audience members were asked to getup and get involved. Mind-bending andmind-boggling things happened.
“I don’t understand,” said the girlbehind me. “I’m so confused,” she saidseveral times during the show.
Dynamo, real name Steven Frayne, has wowed the world with awe-inspiringstunts such as walking across the RiverThames and levitating above skyscraperthe Shard.
One of the biggest surprises wasDynamo’s sense of humour, having funwith the audience in a way he neverreally did on four seasons of his TVshow, Magician Impossible.
Perth Arena has a reduced capacityfor Dynamo’s shows, to create a moreintimate feel, yet there is still a heavyreliance on watching the magic unfoldon the big screen.
You could sit there looking for wires, trap doors or other telltale signs but thatwould be missing the point.
Sometimes we all just need a littlemagic in our lives and Dynamo providedthat for those willing to see and believe.
Believe and you will see
Dynamo has wowed the world.
