Had Dynamo swapped my pen for one with invisible ink? Had he somehow made the words vanish? Or was it something more logical; that my pen had simply stopped working? Believe what you will. What I wrote matters little because a magic show is one of the hardest of any performances to review without spoiling the fun for anyone yet to attend. Even the hard to impress would surely have been won over by the show’s animated sequences that basically served to tell Dynamo’s origin story; how a slightly built boy from the Delph Hill housing estate in Bradford, West Yorkshire, used magic and his imagination to escape a life of bullying and poverty to become one of the most in-demand and famous magicians and illusionists in the modern world. Yes, there were card tricks (he shuffles and cuts cards like a demon). Yes, there was a mobile phone trick. Audience members were asked to get up and get involved. Mind-bending and mind-boggling things happened. “I don’t understand,” said the girl behind me. “I’m so confused,” she said several times during the show. Dynamo, real name Steven Frayne, has wowed the world with awe-inspiring stunts such as walking across the River Thames and levitating above skyscraper the Shard. One of the biggest surprises was Dynamo’s sense of humour, having fun with the audience in a way he never really did on four seasons of his TV show, Magician Impossible. Perth Arena has a reduced capacity for Dynamo’s shows, to create a more intimate feel, yet there is still a heavy reliance on watching the magic unfold on the big screen. You could sit there looking for wires, trap doors or other telltale signs but that would be missing the point. Sometimes we all just need a little magic in our lives and Dynamo provided that for those willing to see and believe. Believe and you will see Dynamo has wowed the world. The video clip is a celebration of contemporary and traditional Noongar culture and promotes language revival, cultural pride and creative skills development.
