Frayne News | Page 1 FRAYNE DAY IS COMING! THURSDAY 24 SEPTEMBER Please be aware that due to the COVID19 restricƟons, Frayne Day 2020 will only be for students and sta. Unfortunately parents/family or exstudents will be unable to aƩend this year. From the Vice Principal Dear Families A colleague of mine shared with me the joy of seeing her mother hustling through a crowd to take a photo of her at a presentaƟon she was giving. Whilst my colleague was edging into her forƟes, it highlighted that the love of a parent of child doesn’t change. We see this in our community at the numerous events that are held around the College with the incredible support that is oered, and we harness this wherever possible. Whilst COVID19 has forced the implementaƟon of restricƟons pertaining to adults gathering for assemblies and masses, rest assured we conƟnue to share the great news of our community through a range of plaƞorms. I encourage you to keep up to date via the College Facebook page, website or newsleƩer. The Frayne family has had an acƟon lled week, despite it being a fourday week for our students. The stacollaborated on Monday, reviewing programmes and further exploring ways to enhance the learning opportuniƟes for our students. The staof Frayne are relentless in the provision of the highest calibre of educaƟon for all students from Kindergarten through to Year 12. We are thankful to you for entrusƟng your child in our care. The domesƟc church is a term which is used to refer to the ‘family’. The family is the place where we rst learn what it means to love another person. The Year 1s shared reecƟons on their families as places of love, forgiveness, joy, acceptance and service in their class liturgy held on Thursday morning. It was a reminder that so oŌen we complicate our lives, instead of drawing on the wisdom that comes from the perspecƟve of a child. “Forgive each other, share with your brothers and sisters, help your parents and be respecƞul”. If we could apply this same message to our community, our naƟon and our world, imagine the peace we would experience. I extend my thanks to the Year 1s and their teaching team for preparing this beauƟful ritual. Thanks to those parents who joined us. It was lovely to have you onsite… physically distanced, of course. FRAYNE DAY IS COMING!

THURSDAY 24 SEPTEMBER

Please be aware that due to the COVID‐19 restric ons, Frayne Day 2020 will only be for students and staff.    Unfortunately parents/family or ex‐students will be unable to a end this year.

From the Vice Principal

Dear Families

A colleague of mine shared with me the joy of seeing her mother hustling through a crowd to take a photo of her at a presenta on she was giving.  Whilst my colleague was edging into her for es, it highlighted that the love of a parent of child doesn’t change.  We see this in our  community at the numerous events that are held around the College with the incredible sup‐port that is offered, and we harness this wherever possible.  Whilst COVID‐19 has forced the implementa on of restric ons pertaining to adults gathering for assemblies and masses, rest assured we con nue to share the great news of our community through a range of pla orms.   I encourage you to keep up to date via the College Facebook page, website or newsle er.

The Frayne family has had an ac on filled week, despite it being a four‐day week for our  students.  The staff collaborated on Monday, reviewing programmes and further exploring ways to enhance the learning opportuni es for our students.  The staff of Frayne are relentless in the provision of the highest calibre of educa on for all students from Kindergarten through to Year 12.  We are thankful to you for entrus ng your child in our care.

The domes c church is a term which is used to refer to the ‘family’.  The family is the place where we first learn what it means to love another person.  The Year 1s shared reflec ons on their families as places of love, forgiveness, joy, acceptance and service in their class liturgy held on Thursday morning.  It was a reminder that so o en we complicate our lives, instead of drawing on the wisdom that comes from the perspec ve of a child.  “Forgive each other, share with your brothers and sisters, help your parents and be respec ul”.  If we could apply this same message to our community, our na on and our world, imagine the peace we would  experience.  I extend my thanks to the Year 1s and their teaching team for preparing this  beau ful ritual.  Thanks to those parents who joined us.  It was lovely to have you onsite… physically distanced, of course.

FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 31 ISSUE 24 / WEEK 5 TERM 3 / 21 AUGUST 2020

The Duncan Street Campus had its much‐awaited athle cs carnival on Tuesday at the State Athle cs Centre.  There were sighs of relief when the carnival was given the green light to proceed, so whilst there was a bit of light rain, nothing was going to stand in the way of the facilita‐on of this event.  This year we had a significant increase in the number of students par cipa ng in events, which is exactly how we like it!

Many students and staff dressed up in their cluster colours with team spirit at an all  me high.  I commend all staff and students for making this day a success.  Thank you to our College Director of Sport, Mr Aldworth for his organisa on of the carnival.

Mrs Weston and her team of Scien sts celebrated Science Week with an array of ac vi es in our College science precinct.  This year’s theme was ‘Deep Blue: innova on for the future of our oceans’.  The theme embraces the innova ve technologies, capabili es and skills needed to achieve economic, environmental and social sustainability of our oceans.  There was an abundance of ac vi es on offer for our students and a well‐received morning tea provided to staff.

This Wednesday the students in Mrs Edmonds Year 6 class concluded their 5‐week program based on the Duncan Street Campus.  This  program supports the students in their transi on to Year 7.  Mrs Searson and Mr DiGuiseppe provided an enriching introductory program in Foods and Materials Technologies.  Next week Mrs Nenke’s class will be based at the high school every Wednesday for the  remainder of the term.

Congratula ons to our Senior Girls on their netball win on Wednesday.  The girls went into the Grand final of the ACC championship unde‐feated.  This is the second year in a row that the girls have won this carnival.  The girls a end training three mornings per week at 7am at  the College with their coach Miss Vince and are supported by Miss Mar n.  Teamwork, prac ce and personal discipline have resulted in this  successful outcome.  Well done to the team consis ng of the following students:

Madison Austen  Madison Butler  Aitaua Enari  Charisse Rond  Ava Harris Hayley Connolly  Tiana Willesen  Megan Tuohy  Sasha Ford  Trinity Rond (Captain) Lillian Ninye   Isabel Milne

The students of Year 4 and 5 gathered for mass on Thursday morning to celebrate the Feast of St Bernard.  Our Balmoral Campus Chaplain  Fr Nicholas celebrated the mass.  It was a joy to see so many students receiving Holy Communion and some were doing so for the second me.

A big congratula ons to the students who received their First Holy Communion last weekend.  The College prepares the students for the  sacraments through the Religious Educa on program and students then receive the sacrament within their parish community.  The  catechists at our neighbouring parishes do a wonderful job, partnering with the school in the prepara on of our students for the sacraments.  A grandmother who a ended the mass last Sunday at Our Lady Help of Chris ans Parish in East Victoria Park, shared this message with us.

“I am an 87‐year‐old GRANDMA who was present at OUR LADY HELP OF CHRISTIAN Church in VICTORIA PARK on Sunday for the First Communion Mass for 22 girls and boys from the local Primary School.  I wanted to let you know that I was very impressed with the  service and to say that it was a credit to you that you prepared them all so well.  Everything about the day, including their appearance, their behaviour ......par cularly their readings.  I was able to hear all their voices so very clearly.  I have a real thing about voices......and am disappointed if I can't hear them.  They were the best.  There was an air about them that shone through........that special GRACE they all shared.  Congratula ons for preparing them so well and it will be a day they will remember for a long  me, I am sure.  Many thanks.”

If you know what the ‘Hucklebuck’ and the ‘Pride of Erin’ are, then you too had a few dancing lessons at some point in your life.  The Year 10s had their dinner dance on Thursday night in the Duncan Street Campus gym, celebra ng the finale of their dancing lessons held during their Physical Educa on classes over the last 5 weeks.  The students enjoyed a meal together and danced the night away to some familiar ‘old tunes’ as well as some more contemporary ones.  It is a favourite event for our Senior School students.  It is a great joy to watch the progres‐sion of learning from the commencement of these classes to the conclusion.

Next week the Balmoral Campus is having a Book Fair.  Please be advised that this is an opportunity to purchase books for your son or  daughter.  Whilst the annual Book Week celebra ons usually occur at the same  me as Book Fair, this year they are not happening at the same  me.  Please do not send your son or daughter to school in a “Where’s Wally?” costume yet!

Please remain vigilant when driving around the College campuses.  Please remember to:  Follow the road rules  Adhere to parking restric ons  Watch out for children (as they can walk out unexpectedly)  Stay off the neighbours’ verges and out of their driveways  Be pa ent

Courtesy is contagious and every choice you make is being watched by a future driver!

The Frayne family has had a fabulous week and we are thankful to staff, students and parents for their ongoing support.  Please do not  hesitate to contact the College if you have concerns or queries.

Chaplain’s Reflection THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The feast of the Queenship of the Virgin Mary is on 22 August.  This feast is a logical follow‐up to the Assump on and is now celebrated one week a er that feast.  Pope Pius XII established the Queenship of Mary feast in 1954, however this  tle of Mary comes from Scripture.  At  the Annuncia on, the Archangel Gabriel announced that Mary's Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever.  At the Visita on, Elizabeth calls Mary the mother of my Lord and all Mary's life is closely associated with Jesus.  So, her Queenship is a share in the Kingship  of Jesus.  Later, in the 4th century, Mary is called "Lady" and "Queen".  The Church fathers in the 13th Century con nue this by crea ng hymns like "Hail, Holy Queen" and "Queen of Heaven".  The words of Pope Pius XII describe the Queenship of Mary: "Jesus, the Son of God, reflects  on His Heavenly Mother the glory, the majesty and the dominion of His Kingship, for having been associated to the King of Martyrs in the unspeakable work of human Redemp on as Mother and co‐operator, she remains forever associated to Him, with a prac cally unlimited power, in the distribu on of the graces which flow from the Redemp on.  Jesus is King throughout all eternity by nature and by right of con‐quest: through Him, with Him, and subordinate to Him, Mary is Queen by grace, by divine rela onship, by right of conquest, and by singular choice of the Father.  And her kingdom is as vast as that of her Son and God, since nothing is excluded from her dominion".   Let us pray to Mary our Mother and our Queen:

Father, you have given us the Mother of your Son to be our Queen and Mother. With the support of Her prayers may we come to share the glory of your children in the kingdom of Heaven.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

YEAR 5 MERCY DAYS

On 10 and 11 August, the Year 5 students visited St Mary’s Cathedral and Mercedes College.  We re‐traced the steps of Mother Ursula Frayne, arriving by boat and walking through the city, up the hill to the cathedral.  On the walk, Mr Dalton showed us the plaque in the foot‐path named a er Ursula Frayne, as well as the room in which she stayed when she first arrived in Perth.  We enjoyed a tour of St Mary’s  Cathedral, a ended Mass there and were shown through the grounds of historic Mercedes College by Sr Breda.  It was a very informa ve and enjoyable day.  The following are quotes from students about their trip:  I learnt that an organ’s motor is so big, it has to be in a different room in the cathedral. ‐ Brooklyn Hunter  I enjoyed the tour of the cathedral because the windows and places in the cathedral are amazing. ‐ Perth Macapagal  I learnt that Ursula Frayne brought a Grandfather Clock with her on the ship and it is s ll at Mercedes College. ‐ Erin Arena  My favourite part was when I saw the instruments. ‐ Lucy Shim  The chapel’s les shone with reflec ons of everybody in it like we were standing in the mirror. ‐ Amberley Miles  We learnt lots of stuff and we got to experience how it would be to live 100 years ago. ‐ Jesse Wong  I learnt that all the past archbishops are buried in a room called the crypt, which is under the cathedral. ‐ William McKean  Mother Ursula Frayne came to Perth on a small rowing boat, on a hot day. ‐ Lila Carter  Learning about Mother Ursula Frayne was a very nice experience. We got to touch and explore some items that were over 150 years old.  ‐ Kobe Brown  I really enjoyed learning about the huge organ in the cathedral and its amazing features. ‐ Emme  Fantasia‐Serve  We began by going onto the ferry from South Perth to Elizabeth Quay. We learnt that Ursula Frayne went on a rowing boat between Freman‐tle and Perth. ‐ Levi Escalante  We walked to the Cathedral and Mercedes College to learn about what Ursula Frayne did. ‐ James Galvin  We heard 3,000 pipe organs in the Cathedral. The lowest sounded like a motorbike and then you couldn’t really hear the highest sound. ‐ Alyssa Pieri  While walking through the city we saw where Ursula Frayne stayed. ‐ Georgia Reilly  We saw the beau ful stained‐glass windows in the Cathedral and each picture told a story. ‐ Lilly Chapman  We went on a tour of the Mercedes College convent and our guide was a Sister of Mercy. ‐ Rishi Bharadwaj  The Cathedral was donated in pieces and local sculptors made the Sta ons of the Cross. ‐ William Osnain  We saw the Crypt under the Cathedral where the Bishops of Perth have been buried. ‐ Lucy Bollen  The Crypt is under the altar and has room for 48 Bishops. ‐ Aidan Chui  Mrs Michelle Davis, Year 5 Teacher

The compe on consisted of three preliminary games against John Wollaston Anglican Community School, Kingsway Chris an College and Peter Carnley Anglican Community School.  The UFCC team had great success in these matches, advancing themselves to the knockout series with three very convincing wins.

The team then first faced Emmanuel Catholic College and secured a place in the semi‐final with a substan al win, 49‐16.  The UFCC girls then  progressed into the semi‐final against Corpus Chris  College, with another considerable win, 33‐25.

Not even the rain itself could dampen the spirits of the 2020 Cluster Carnival this year.  A er a few barren months of COVID induced in‐ac vity and a carnival that has put on ice more  mes than Harley Bennell’s calf, students turned up in force for what turned out to be a day to remember.  From the first race it was clear that students meant business a er more that 60 students turned up for the Year 7 Boys 1500m race; a sharp increase from the dozen or so from last year.  And it didn’t stop there.  Wave a er wave of students turned up to all events with hordes of students ge ng involved in races, jumps and throws!

We did have a delayed start to the day with buses arriving late due to the wet weather and then a solid downpour put us behind schedule, but in true Frayne spirit we persevered.  It was amazing to see to see how many students got involved.  Looking up to the stands and not hearing any cheering was a first.  However, this was not surprising or disappoin ng, considering they were almost empty as students con n‐ued to move from event to event, happily oblivious to the intermi ent light drizzle that hung around for most of the day!

It has been noted that due to the rain some students le their event before ge ng a throw. In the interest of fairness I would like to in‐vite students to a end an a er school throws event catch up this Tuesday, 25 August, at Raphael Park from 3.30pm‐4.30pm and will in‐clude shot put, discus and javelin. Please note that this is for students that did not get to have a throw recorded at the carnival, not a sec‐ond chance to improve on their result. These results will be included when awarding Cluster Champions and Year Group Champions.

The goal for the day was par cipa on…TICK!  This year has seen a significant shi  in the Carnival culture at Frayne.  Firstly with the Swimming Carnival and now with Athle cs, the numbers of students par ci‐pa ng really is unprecedented!  I am so proud of the way students and staff have responded to the chal‐lenge.  Changes to the Carnival are already taking place as we look at ways to manage this increase and con nue to provide the best experience for our Frayne community.

With so much data to check through a winner couldn’t be announced on the day.  We will look to an‐nounce this next week during Middle School and Senior School assemblies with the ACC provisional squad to be announced in prepara on for the Interschool ACC ‘E’ Division  Carnival coming up early September.  Huge thanks to the staff, students and parents that helped make the day such a great experience.

SENIOR BOYS’ SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

The Senior Boys’ Soccer team travelled to St Norbert College to take part in the ACC Championship Soccer Tournament.  The weather was very pleasant following the drizzle at the Athle cs the day before.  The tournament was split up into pools with the winners from the south to play on and then have a crossover Grand Final against the winning school from the north.

We had a tough pool with Corpus Chris , St Norbert and heavily sports focused CBC Fremantle. In  the 1st game we played CBC Fremantle and a er missing a heap of chances, but domina ng general play, the boys went down 1‐0.  Those missed opportuni es would come back to bite us later in the day as we won the other two games to finish second in the pool.

A great day by the boys who took a game to gel but then looked the best team in the pool.  A fantas c group of lads who played the game with great skill and teamwork but also showed their class, integrity and displayed great sportsmanship, even telling the Ref he made the wrong call and handing the ball to the other team when we were awarded possession.  I am very proud of their efforts and in thanking them for their effort make special men on of Theo Harris, Amal Jose, Thomas Abraham, Aiden Formston, Anton Messent, Evan Victor, Zachariah Calleja and Aaron Mathews who have represented the college in soccer over a number of years and wish them success in their footballing endeavours for the future.

SENIOR GIRLS’ SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

The Senior Girls’ Soccer team had their round of games at Cur n University for the ACC Championships soccer tournament.  They entered the tournament as underdogs in what can only be described as the pool of death!  A late addi on to the team, the speedy Ella Vulin made an instant impact in her debut as a Year 9 scoring goals and generally just being a menace all over the ground, as she tackled and pressured the opposi on relentlessly.  A er being moved back behind the ball Leah O’Callaghan is now known as “the Janitor” a er  me and again she swept up the ball from defence.  Other notable men on is Hannah “the Rock” Roberts who was solid in defence constantly clearing the  danger and launching us into a ack.  The girls were in for a tough day with very strong opponents in the group stage.  Seton ended up winning the compe on and Newman were the Division 2 Champions.  Winning their last 2 games saw UFCC take out the Division 3  tle in what was a very enjoyable and exci ng day.  To all the outgoing Year 12 players we wish you all the best for the future and hope that you keep playing in the years to come a er you leave us.  Thank you for all your efforts over the years in represen ng UFCC.  You leave us in good shape to con nue to improve as we look to challenge the best soccer schools in the state!  Games Seton 7 – UFCC 0   Newman 2 ‐ UFCC 0 UFCC 3 ‐ St Norbert 0  /  Best players: Ella Vulin, Leah O’Callaghan UFCC 3 ‐ La Salle 2  /  Best players: Hannah Roberts, Sofia Peovi s and Ella Vulin  Miss Bronwen Webb
