National Museum of Cambridge Glass

As we head east on Route 70, towardsNew Jersey, the final Sunday ofConvention week, my wife Jane and Ibegin to discuss all that transpired inthe previous week. AlthoughConvention 2005 is over, the fun, thegreat memories, the things we learnedand experienced and the friendshipsrenewed are just beginning to be partof our growing Cambridge history.

For us, Convention week beginsMonday evening when we leave homefor Cambridge. We arrive Tuesdaymorning and head for breakfast at theCracker Barrel. We spend our first daywandering through local shops lookingfor glass. We visit the NCC Museumand of course, stop by Theos for apiece of cherry pie. The best part ofthe day, however, is the conversationswe have with other NCC members werun into everywhere we go. The sharingof the convention experience with otherNCC members is what makes the wholeprocess the joy that it is.

One of the things that makesConvention really special, is theassortment of programs. This year allthe programs were delivered by NCCmembers, who shared with ussomething near and dear to their hearts.Jim & Nancy Finley presented aprogram on Cambridge turkeys. Notonly did I learn some new things; I gotto see a frosted turkey, as well as agreen one. I never saw either before, and didnt even know the frosted onesexisted. Doug Ingraham displayed somefabulous Rosepoint pieces and deliveredin an informative lecture on the subject. He graciously shared with us an originalletter to the salesmen, which heraldedthe new pattern. What a treat!

Mark Nye generously did two programson Cambridge advertising andephemera. I cant even begin to tell you

all the fabulous facts, as well asdocuments, that those present wereprivileged to see and learn about.Marks programs opened a window toanother aspect of the Cambridge GlassCompany.

Freeman and Jeannie Moore dazzledus with a comprehensive look atCambridge Mount Vernon. Their slideshow was so well put together thathopefully there will be some way toshare it with al l of the NCCmembership. Lastly, Lynn WelkersGlass I.D. and Show & Tell combineas one of those rare treats that allconventioneers look forward to fromyear to year.

As you can see, thanks to Show ChairShelley Cole and all those who didpresentations, the 2005 Conventionattendees were afforded a chance tolearn as well as enjoy. Believe me,thats a really special combination.

Now, I will never be able to mentionall the special moments duringConvention week, but let me try torelay a few that really stand out.Wednesday nights pool party is oneof those unique moments duringConvention when everyone just getsa chance to sit and talk. Going fromgroup to group conversing in a relaxedsetting and just sharing in a trulyfriendly atmosphere. Jane and I, RichieBennett and Mark Nye were the lastfour to leave, and we actually had toforce ourselves to go.

On Thursday night, Cindy & Mike Arentgraciously opened their home to ahoard of NCC enthusiasts. This kindof generosity abounds at Convention, and makes it clear that the NCC familyis just that. A family who support, cherish and share with each other. For

me, this is the most special part ofconvention.

Another kind of generosity is in theform of effort: time spent on NCCbusiness, work done with the onlyreward being a sense that you mayhave helped your fellow members. There are so many who fit this mold, especially at Convention time, that Iwill not mention any by name but ratherthank them en masse. There is nothingmore special than those who selflesslygive so that the rest of us can totallyenjoy Convention. Thank you all!

A couple last things that I thought wereincredibly special. At the Friday nightbanquet, I looked to my left and noticeda First Time attendee, J.A. Oszvart, sitting directly next to one of ourlongest standing members, MaryWelker. The special effort we havemade to make First-Timers feel at homedoesnt get any better than that. AtSaturday nights Pizza Party, a grab bagof items that were generously donatedby the Glass Show dealers, was raffledoff. A goal of $600 was set and thanksto Les Hansen, Doug Ingraham and theFinleys that plateau was reached. Thegroup then donated the contents of theraffle back to the Club. A real TriplePlay (and as all sport fans know it doesnot get any more special than that).

I could really go on and on, but I thinkthat I probably already made my point.Convention is just, SPECIAL. So ifyou have never been, and you like tomake plans in advance, really considerjoining us next year. I promise you anespecially good time.

Over 160 NCC Members Entertained at ConventionOver 160 NCC Members Entertained at ConventionOver 160 NCC Members Entertained at ConventionOver 160 NCC Members Entertained at ConventionOver 160 NCC Members Entertained at ConventionCambridge Collectors from across thecountry gathered in Ohio from June22nd thru 26th to share glass and fel-lowship at the NCCs Annual Conven-tion. Five of the attendees were attheir 32nd consecutive convention!

This years Convention, titled Let MeEntertain You featured six educa-tional programs, two auctions, apoolside picnic, and (as usual) twofabulous glass shows.

The festivities kicked off on Wednes-day evening with a poolside picnic atThe Days Inn. A casual dinner of friedchicken, potato salad and baked beanswas accompanied by a variety of li-bations and good conversation. Manymembers visited with glass friends notseen since last June.

Thursday featured a field trip to theFenton Glass factory in Williamstown,WV. This is one of the few glassplants still making glass much thesame way Cambridge Glass wasmanufactured. Twenty-two NCCmembers made the trip and enjoyedthe informative tour. On Thursdayevening, members were treated to anoutstanding program on Rosepoint, given by advanced collector DougIngraham of Minnesota. Doug dis-played many beautiful pieces of

Rosepoint, uncluding some spectacu-lar and very rare colored pieces.

Friday started out with the distribu-tion of numbers for entrance to theGlass Show & Sale; the first attend-ees were in line at 5:00 a.m. Laterin the morning (at a more respect-able hour, to be sure), there weremeetings for the seventeen first-timeattendees and for members of StudyGroups.

Friday also featured the first of twoeducational programs by Mark Nye;a fascinating examination of Cam-bridge ephemera.

The Glass Show & Sale opened at2:00 with about 150 eager collec-tors waiting at the doors. ShowChairs Mary Beth Hackett and JoyMcFadden assembled nineteen topdealers, and the array of glass was -as always - stunning.

Friday concluded with a lovely ban-quet, catered by Theos of Cam-bridge; followed by the NCCs An-nual Membership Meeting. A SilentAuction, organized by The NorthTexas Study Group, raised over$1,500 for the NCC.

Saturdays events started with theGlass Dash, the annual early morn-ing glass flea market. Lots of excit-ing finds were made!

There were educational programs byJim & Nancy Finley on CambridgeTurkeys, Mark Nye on CambridgeAdvertising and - of course - LynnWelkers famous Glass ID Session, followed by Bring & Brag. Thisyears collection of glass treasures didnot disappoint.

After an early evening pizza party, andan entertaining Grab Bag auction(which raised another $600), mem-bers adjourned to the ConferenceRoom for one final program; a fasci-nating Power Point presentation byFreeman Moore of Texas, on Cam-bridge Mt. Vernon.

The 2005 NCC Convention is nowhistory, but plans are already under-way for next years big event. If youdidnt make it Cambridge this year, rush out and buy a 2006 calendar rightaway and mark off June 21 thru 25.We can hardly wait!

Alex is a relatively new Cambridge club member, buthas made a quick and remarkable impact. He begancollecting Cambridge Glass in 1999 when his wife ShelleyCole (now an NCC Board member) had picked up a fewpieces when the NDGA Convention was in San Antonio.Moonlight Caprice sparked his interest (he thought itwould look nice with their china pattern and in theirnewly painted blue dining room). He bought a pair ofMoonlight 1338 candlesticks and was on is way! Hisprimary focus now is on Keyhole and Everglades.

His desire to serve NCC also dates to San Antonio, wherehe learned about the flooding of the Cambridge Museum.

They donated the reception area of the museum andbegan to be known by many members. When anopening arose as CB Editor, Alex stepped in, November2002. In the past year, hes ushered in the electronicage with the E-Crystal Ball and has taken overmanagement of our eBay store (in March, 2005). Alexhas also been By-laws Chairperson since March 2004and has taken a zero-based look at how we have builtour governance.

Residents of Charlottesville, Alex and Shelley starteda study group in Northern Virginia and he serves asPresident of this group (named the Cambridge TrianglesStudy Group). Like all study groups, they are lookingfor new members!

As one can see, Alex has quickly become a majorcontributor to NCC and is a deserving recipient of thisaward. Outside of glass collecting, he is a theatricalproducer and playwright. He is currently the ArtisticDirector of Play On! (a theatre company) and is on thefaculty of the Live Arts Theatre Training Institute, where he leads a playwrighting workshop. He recentlyretired, after serving for six years as President ofthe Vocal Arts Society, a group that produces operaticconcerts throughout Central Virginia. We are fortunatethat he has brought this myriad of talents to help benefitNCC.

The Board of Directors congratulates Alex Citron onthis well deserved recognition.
