BMS welcomed Frank Macon, Tuskegee Airman, and Elizabeth Harper, HPS alumni and author, on February 20! Sometimes history is made by a dyslexic, mischievous boy who hates school, is a descendant of one of Frederick Douglass’ half-sisters, and whose Pops was a Buffalo Soldier. In I Wanted to be a Pilot, one of the less than 100 living Documented Original Tuskegee Airman, Franklin J. Macon, tells the lively stories of how he overcame life’s obstacles to become a Tuskegee Airman. Soar through history with Franklin as he conquers dyslexia, finds mischief, and grows up to change the course of America. Readers laugh at Frank’s childhood antics, while being reminded that disabilities like Frank’s dyslexia, repeating a grade in school, and other hardships can be overcome. I Wanted to be a Pilot encourages kids to recognize history, reach for their dreams, and even make their own toys as they are reminded of the great strength and determination of the men and women who came before them. Wednesday, many BMS students had the chance to hear Frank speak about his life and his struggles in an interactive interview with Elizabeth Harper, the author who helped Frank record his story in this book. Frank shared his wisdom (and antics) with our students. If you’d like to know more about Frank and the Tuskegee Airmen, please find his book on his website-- or ask one of the many students who participated to borrow their copy! From Our Principals……..

Visit franklinmacon.com for more information about book sales and Frank’s life!

PLEASE VOTE TUESDAY, MAY 7ANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL

On May 7, Hudsonville School parents and community members will have the chance to vote on our annual Non-Homestead Millage renewal. This is an annual renewal request that voters have approved for the past 24 years and, if approved, would generate approximately $4.8 million dollars of operating revenue for our school district. Please note, this is not a tax on primary residences and is not a new tax.

Official ballot language is as follows:

Hudsonville Public Schools Operating Millage Renewal Proposal

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance.

Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Hudsonville Public Schools, Ottawa and Allegan Counties, Michigan, be increased by 18 mills ($18.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for the year 2019, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2019 is approximately $4,850,000 (this is a renewal of millage that expired with the 2018 tax levy)?
