Lead by Example...part 2

It is said that when leaders say one thing, but do another, they erode trust. This is indeed a critical ele-

ment of productive leadership. But the question is always about why this is so important and what are the

consequences if you don’t walk your talk? I won’t go into this topic too deep as I have another question.

My question would be - can we change our examples when needed? Here it means, is it okay to amend what you have preached earlier to the same community, just because you have a different perspective of

the same matter?

This conversation went on at the back seat of my car between my daughter, my son and me. In Bulletin edition 1516, somewhat similar conversation happened with regards to traffic lights between my kids, so I

thought it will be appropriate if I call it part two...

Girl: You see, Daddy is stopping because it is red light. Good Daddy.. Boy: But there’s no car in front of us, so Daddy, go Daddy!

Girl: No...cannot. Red means stop.

Boy: Daddy, I wanna ask you this. If no cars in front can go right? Daddy: No. You can’t. It’s wrong.

Girl: You see...I was right. Boy: Then if it’s 3am and no cars at all, do you still stop at red?

Daddy: Yes, rules are rules.

Boy: Then Daddy, if you have one of us very sick in the car and needs to go to the hospital fast, then will you stop at red or go ahead?

Daddy: Then I will go ahead even though it’s red because it is emergency. Girl: But wrong is still wrong Daddy...

My wife again looked at me smiling as always, and I was caught dumbfounded.

This happens pretty much every time and everywhere in our life, but of course different context. There

are policies and procedures in place, created by humans, and then the same humans will sometimes bend or break the same policies and procedures, with a solid reasoning.

I am not saying that it is wrong, but is it okay to do that?

So instead of bending and breaking, do you then change or amend these rules?

The question is, what about those who have gone through these decisions then? And, if you don’t, then

how are we going to become better in future?

I shall leave you here and do ponder these many questions that I have posted as it will be meaningful to

your life too.

I am going to be quite brief this time. There is so much to do as a dual function President/Hon Secre-tary. And I am pressed for time to meet various requirements in the preparation for the handover/takeover and Installation ceremonies. A few loose ends need to be tied up and a few meetings need to be called. Of course this situation shouldn’t have happened in a Club with 45 active members. But it did for Pudu. It has been the normal thing also with the directors who double up as Chairman/Secretary. Something is not right. So what do you do? Put it right, of course. Trouble is, even if you could put it right, would the “new” format be duly respected. Its okay before so why is it not okay now? Regrettably what these people who do not come forward to volunteer their “service above self” don’t appreciate the learning value of the job of Secretary. It is a very interesting job. Never mind the fact that you have to take notes and write minutes, but think of the improvement you get with your written and spoken Eng-lish; and being able to come up with certain facts that you probably didn’t realise existed. Your Rotary knowledge would just escalate because you have to do the “homework.” The constitution and bylaws – the rule book – for example, have many rules and procedures meant to

guide the Club officers and members. The advice given by your advisors are also great at face value but if you are familiar with the rule book, you may find that it’s worthwhile to double check. We are all falli-ble, no one is perfect. So going back to the book is the best way. That means the rule book must be up-to-date. Therefore the many things already approved by the Boards should get into the rule book, however late you may be. I’ve not gone through the minutes of past Board meetings; if I do I am sure I’ll find a few decisions that should have gone into the rule book. That’s the job of the Secretary in the interest of the Club’s future administrators. Otherwise, it would just get forgotten, for better or for worse. So, really there is nothing to fear about being a Secretary. In some cases, the Secretary – because of his exposure to the entire workings of the committee – could quite easily take over the Chair as the suc-cessor of that directorship. Thus we have continuity of leadership in that little patch of management ar-ea. If all the other portfolios are like that, then continuity of leadership will not be an issue or problem at all for the Club. More so for the Hon Secretary; it cannot be treated as a secondary job only for writing

minutes. ---------------- This morning of Saturday 11 June, 2016 the MBS Interact Club had their IU Day. The event was titled “DREAM – Dare, Reach, Endure, Achieve, Motivate.” It was really impressive. It’s a pity that most of our Rotarians missed the event; however, the brief story is in ClubRunner. Mr Bunn Nagara is Senior Fellow in the Foreign

Policy and Security Studies division of ISIS

(Institute of Strategic and International Studies)

Malaysia, and Adviser to the Invest Asia Founda-

tion.

He was Associate Editor and Foreign Editor of Star

Publications, Senior Analyst and Visiting Fellow at

ISIS, Research Fellow at the Institute of South-

East Asian Studies (Singapore) and ASEAN Fellow

at the Japan Institute of International Affairs

(Tokyo).

He held senior posts at New Straits Times, New

Sabah Times and TV3 News, was Editor of New

Voice of Asia journal, Contributing Editor of South

Review, and analyst at Malaysian Industry and

ABC (Australia) Radio, and commentator on

Asiaweek and Aljazeera.

For covering the 1986 People Power Revolution,

he received an NUJ citation and a Medal of Honor nominated by Philippine media and church

leaders.

Mr Nagara has published in Race and Class (London), The Indonesian Quarterly and Contem-

porary South-East Asia journals besides the Asian press.

He co-authored Agents of Peace: Public Communication and Conflict Resolution in an Asian

Setting (Jakarta, 2004), Regional Order in East Asia: ASEAN and Japan Perspectives (Tokyo,

2007), and The Rise of China: Perspectives from Asia and Europe (New Delhi, 2008).

He has contributed to undergraduate, civil/public service and journalism courses. He graduat-

ed from Southampton University and obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma from Uppsala Universi-

ty in Sweden.

He is a life member of the Malaysian Social Science Association and the Malaysian Association

for American Studies, and is an East-West Center Associate. His research interests span

ASEAN, East Asian integration and global power relations.

It has been a blessed week and I am happy to share with you another history in our District. We have just received the Charter of another new club, the Rotary Club of Perlis. To receive this news while we have just celebrated the Charter Nite of Rotary Club of Taiping Lake and while I was in my speech at Rotary Club of Taiping’s 80th Anniversary, was overwhelming. After almost 4 decades, Rotary finally made its presence once again in the State of Perlis. Congratulations to Charter President Chris and President-Elect Dr Sathesh and the 22 charter members of Rotary Club of Perlis. Our dreams were realised with your determination, commitment, enthusiasm and passion to serve the com-munity in Perlis. Welcome to the family of Rotary, welcome to District 3300. To the sponsor club, Rotary Club of Alor Setar, thank you for taking on this baby. President Jacky, you and your mem-bers have been rendering support, sharing your projects with them and continuously providing the motivation to see through their formation. The DGSRs, President Jacky, PE Adrian, PP Sarjit and PP Poe Su, your guidance and personal relations with the new members gave them the confidence. Thank you. They would require your continued guidance and leadership to lead them in the coming years. Our appreciation to Membership Chair, PP Ananda for guiding us through to ensure that the club is ready to be char-tered. To our Extension Chair DGND Dr Baskaran, this is the 9th baby he has delivered in our District. DGND Dr Baskaran has been working very hard to realise Perlis over the last 2 years, and he never gave up. It is a reality to-day, thanks to his perseverance. We did it Rotarians, we all did it. LAST PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE FOR ROTARY Y2015/16

British writer and Royal Air Force pilot Roald Dahl was also an avid photographer who carried his be-

loved Zeiss camera on his many adventures. At a time when each photograph had to be laboriously developed by hand, on film or glass plate negatives, he amassed a collection of hundreds of images.

In later years, these photographs served as a visual record of his travels, a way to document his ex-periences and share them with others. Yet he always spoke of his memories as being far more vivid

than the photographs could ever reflect. So many events and experiences, he said, were simply im-

possible to capture; they could not be adequately conveyed in images or words.

Language may fail, and photographs fade; minds are fallible, and details are lost. But some experienc-es, as Dahl said, never dim; they stand out in our memories, even after decades, as a wall of flame.

They rear up forever over the landscape of our past, dividing our lives into what came before and what came after.

That metaphor has stayed with me throughout the past year as I have traveled the world for Rotary. For indeed, this entire year has stood, and will always stand, as a wall of flame in my mind, dividing

my life into before and after.

When I think back over these 12 months, I see a bright kaleidoscope of images cascading before my

eyes, day after day, week after week. The anxious parents in Chandigarh, India, hovering at the bed-side of the child recovering from lifesaving heart surgery. The bright flags of Nepal fluttering over an

entire village that had been rebuilt after the devastating earthquake. The feeling of awe in St. Peter’s Square at the Jubilee of Rotarians celebrated by Pope Francis. Joyful gatherings around the world, in

so many countries, in so many languages – with friends I had never before met, my brothers and sis-ters in Rotary.

To serve as president of Rotary International is a colossal undertaking, one that cannot be truly con-veyed in images or words. It is a wall of flame that will burn forever in my memory, dancing with

light, shifting in shadow. A thousand images jostle together in my mind, a thousand recollections, a thousand emotions. Together, they form a great mosaic; together, they show the bright and glorious

work of your hands.

As this Rotary year draws to a close, I am prouder than ever to be part of this great organization: one

that makes the world not poorer, but richer; replaces despair with hope; raises up those whom fate has brought low; and is a gift to so many, while allowing each of us to Be a Gift to the World.



Once upon a time, there lived a big mango tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it everyday. He

climbed to the tree top, ate the mangoes, took a nap under the shadow… He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by, The little boy grew, and he no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree with a sad look on his face. “Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy. “I am no longer a kid, I don’t play around trees anymore.” The boy replied, “I want toys. I

need money to buy them.” “Sorry, I don’t have money… but you can pick all my mangoes and sell them so you will have money.” The boy was so excited. He picked all the mangoes on the tree and left happily. The

boy didn’t come back. The tree was sad.

One day, the boy grown into a man returned. The tree was so excited. “Come and play with me,” the tree

said. “I don’t have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?” “Sorry, I don’t have a house, but you can chop off my branches to build your house.” So the man cut

all the branches off the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn’t come back afterward. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day, the man returned and the tree was delighted. “Come and play with me!” The tree said. “I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?” “Use my

trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy.” So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and didn’t come back for a long time.

Finally, the man returned after he had been gone for so many years. “Sorry, my boy, but I don’t have any-thing for you anymore. No more mangoes to give you.” The tree said. “I don’t have teeth to bite,” the man

replied. “No more trunk for you to climb on.” “I am too old for that now,” the man said.

“I really can’t give you anything, the only thing left is my dying roots,” the tree said with sadness. “I don’t

need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years,” the man replied. “Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest. Come sit down with me and rest.” The boy sat down and the

tree was glad and smiled.

Moral: The tree in the story represents our parents. When we are young, we love to play with them. When we

grow up, we leave them and only come back when we need help. Parents sacrifice their lives for us. Never

Forget their sacrifices. Give them Love and Care before its too late.
