PAESI ALTO MOLISE:Poggio Sannita Castelverrino Pietrabbondante Carovilli Montenero Val Cocchiara Rionero Sannitico Forlì Del Sannio
Poggio Sannita The history of the village has its origins
in pre-roman age, when it was inhabited by Samnite population of shepherds.
During the time of the Roman empire, Poggio Sannita was a military encampment; in fact a sword was found and they said that it dates back to the wars between Romans and Samnites in the 2nd century.

Named «Caccavone» till the year 1922, this centre traced probably its origins from the near village immigration during the Saracen raids in the 9th century. The name should derive from big copper containers called «caccavi» used by the shepherds to curdle milk.

Castelverrino
«Castelluczum», so named in a 12th century land registry, started from the union of the suburbs of Castelluccio and Santa Lucia. The name «Castelverrino» dates back to a Royal decree in 1893.

Pietrabbondante The name derives from the
great amount of stones and rocks spread along its territory.
Pietrabbondante has been the chief town of one of the 34 Counties composing the Duchy of Benevento.
The emblem of Pietrabbondante represents a laurel and an oak braunches and it is sourmonted by a crown.
Near the village there are the ruins of an ancient settlement that was the most important religious and political center of the Samnites.
The whole historical centre is worth seeing for its stone buildings. The real treasure of Pietrabbondante is the Hellenistic Italian area in Calcatello.

Carovilli Most historians think that the name of
Carovilli derives from the Consul Spurio Carvilio, mentioned by Tito Livio.
In Longobard period Carovlli was feud of many overlords such as Borrello, Carafa, Origlia, Marchesano and D’alessandro.
Castiglione of CarovilliNot far from Carovlli there is an ancient and caracteristic village Castiglione di Carovilli, in a beautiful landscape.

This centre is very interesting from the archaeological and palaeontological viewpoint: the necropolis of Fonte Currelli, the Italic small temple and the fortifications of Monte Ferrante prove the ancient origin of this small centre.
Montenero Val Cocchiara The country was called “Mons
Leigno and, according to the «Volturnense Chronicle», it belonged to the Abbey of S. Vincenzo al Volturno in the 11th century.
After varoious overlords, the last owners werw the «Pulce Doria» in the 19th century.

The «Rodeo Pentro» is a very original event that draws large audiences from all over Italy. This event probably dates back to the Samnite times, when the ancient people of the Samnio made large use of horses in their military fields, often proving to be unbeatable thanks to their skilful cavalry units.
Rionero Sannitico The first name of this land was «Rivinigri» probably
from the stream «Rio» flowing in its territory. Once clerical fief, it belonged to the Abbey of San
Vincenzo al Volturno till 1064; after various overlords over the centuries, its last owners were the «Carafa».
In 1781 it was given to the public property.

The outlines of the ancient Medieval castle, later become a baronal residence, situated on the higher part of the village, doesn’t cancell the strategic importance it had during the Middle ages.

Forlì Del Sannio The origins of this village go
certainly back to time before the 11th century.
In the Angevins summaries it’s mentioned as «Forolum», «Foruli», «Foroli», standing probably for Forum Iulii.
After varoius overloards, the last ones were the «Carafa».
