This was previously printed in the newsletter some time ago, however, I feel it is worthy of a reprint. FYI: I was asked a question by a member that got me thinking maybe he wasn’t the only one who didn’t know. The question was, basically, “how does a member access the Board of Directors”? He was trying to find out how a member could give input on ideas, suggestions, etc. He thought that maybe some {possibly most} general members are somehow intimidated by BOD members and are afraid to approach them. So, let me try to clarify. First and foremost is to attend BOD meetings on the first Thursday of each month. This is where the business of this association is conducted. If you have an idea or suggestion or just a concern to present to the BOD, call, email or write a note to the Secretary asking to be put on the meeting agenda. Secondly, attend the general member meeting(s) on the second Thursday of each month. During the section known as new business you may present your thoughts to the President and/or Secretary, and they will then put that on the agenda for the next BOD meeting. {The business of the Association is not conducted at general meetings with the exception of elections and general member voting issues, ie: by laws, etc.} Third and, I think, extremely important is that the Board of Directors are just folks, like you, and elected to serve the majority of the membership. Please do not feel they are unapproachable. I hope this helps. Neil Some of you already know this but for those who don’t, we have installed video cameras in various locations around the property. These cameras are for safety and security and may at times be reviewed by authorized staff personnel. Many thanks to Kurt Nelson for his service to this association. You have taught me much. Fire safety Not an unusual word combination for a firing range but today I want to take the phrase apart and look at the words separately Fire as I choose to use it here refers to the rather nasty way that things

can get burned up under the wrong conditions Given that I am also on the Deer Springs Fire Board I will admit to being particularly sensitive to things that can happen when certain fire conditions prevail I am referring to high wind red flag

Santa Anas These dry winds can pick up a spark and in an instant turn it into a raging inferno The range itself is actually a fairly safe to be during a wildfire but a fire start-ing there could go in virtually any direction with devastating results We need to go to great lengths to avoid anything of the sort from happening

A fire extinguisher is located at each range but will be of limited use in the event of a brush fire If you are on any range and see any sort of grass fire starting get water on it as quickly as possible A water hose will be located at each range USE IT Then report it if necessary to the proper authorities

Actually there is a better solution Listen to the weather reports before heading up to the range If high wind Santa Ana conditions are predicted you might just want to change your plans and take your wife to a movie or lunch instead The Board summarily rejected the idea of shutting down the range under those conditions Their decision leaves me with only the op-tion of appealing to the common sense of the membership to do the right thing If a danger-ous situation can happen you may be certain that it is only a matter of time until it does Good sense and safety demands that we minimize any risk to the greatest extent possible

Lost and Found A rifle scope and container of long cleaning rods have been left at the range and turned in Give me a call with the correct description and you may claim them

Last month I mentioned that Director Cross and I were attempting to reconcile some of the range target rules At best I find that there is a bit of confusion over how and whenvarious rules apply We decided to reduce the rules to a graphic representation which would eliminate or at least minimize any confusion It turns out that we underestimated the difficulty factor by a factor ofhellip let us say a lot None the less we will get it done In the meantime folks please donrsquot argue with the duty RSO Hisher interpretation will still prevail for the time being

Here is a short quiz Surrounding the EFampGA Range is a series of man-gates Each gate has a combination lock that can be opened in an emergency by any current member Do you know what that combination istimersquos up A silver sticker is issued each year to each mem-ber with the four digit combination number Keep it on your badge (you should wear it at all times as I am sure you remember) That combination number will allow you access you to the gates the first aid boxes and the club house Pat yourself on the back if you passed
