Elim's Mission Statement

Dear Elim Family,

The Elim Church Council will be conducting a congregational meeting

following the service on Sunday, November 5, 2017, for the purpose of

voting on the recommendation of the Call Committee to extend a call to

Carol J. Strand as our next pastor.

To arrive at this recommendation, the Call Committee first needed to

complete a Ministry Site Profile (MSP) that describes many aspects of our

congregation for prospective candidates. Over the next couple months, the

Call Committee received and reviewed the Rostered Ministry Profiles

(RMP) of eleven candidates, and interviewed 6 of them – some, more than

once. Three candidates withdrew their names for various reasons.

Our MSP did not indicate we would be considering first call candidates, but

the Synod considers ministry a second career in the case of older

graduates and will credit them with a year of experience for every two years

of work up to a maximum of 10 years. As the Committee reviewed Carol’s

RMP, her responses and comments on both the RMP and in interviews

seemed to align well with Elim. The Call Committee was unanimous in its

decision to recommend Carol Strand for pastor of our congregation.

Carol and her husband currently live in Rochester, MN. She received her

bachelor’s degree in Music Education from NDSU and taught music for a

number of years at a Rochester area school. She also held several music

positions in her church over the years. She received a Masters of Divinity

from Luther Seminary this year.

Please plan to attend the worship service on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at

9:30 am CST (turn your clocks back one hour the night before). Q & A and

the vote will take place immediately after the service.

Would you like to provide Altar Flowers in honor or memory of a loved one? Even though potted plants are now placed on the Altar, this does not mean there cannot be cut flowers given in a person’s honor or memory. If anyone wishes to give flowers on any given Sunday, simply contact the church office with your request and Connie will place your order. Dalbol Flowers and Gifts allows Elim to chose the bouquet colors and purchase both Altar bouquets for around $26.00. If providing flowers for the Altar, Elim office will order the flower color(s) you request. If you wish to take the flowers home with you following worship, please let Connie know that when you call to order them. Thank you.

Elim Lutheran Church Council Minutes October 10, 2017

Attendees: Cindy Wolslegel, Karen Lind, Victoria Savanh, Eston Calixte, Dan Rising, John Lindstrom Secretary’s minutes-October, 2017, Council Meeting – minutes will be put in the newsletter after cor-rections made and minutes approved. CONSENT AGENDA Worship Committee - tabled any changes on proposed “Usher’s List of Responsibilities” until a new Minister is on staff PASTOR’S REPORT Pastoral Acts - Dorothy Bartholomay (passed away) PRIOR BUSINESS New Sign - tabled until next meeting Call Committee Update - bringing a Pastor name to Council for approval on Monday, October 16 Haiti School Proposal - one time donation in the amount of $2,500 to be sent in a monthly installment of $500 a month for five months. They must send us monthly updates on how our funds are being used within the school. Motion to approve by Karen Lind, seconded by Eston Calixte. Motion carries. Hearing Devices - order NEW BUSINESS Hearing devices during Worship Campus Ministry Embracing Stewardship - Cindy Wolslegel attended meeting. Stated there were a lot of good ideas discussed, but particularly enjoyed how they talked about looking at stewardship differently. Date of Annual Meeting - date set for January 28, 2018 Telephone headset for parish secretary - ok to purchase Open Discussion Discussed gifts for Pastor Paula. Cindy Wolslegel stated the Foundation would like to give a gift of $1,000 in Pastor Paula’s name. Dan Rising motioned to approve gift, Eston Calixte seconded. Motion carries. Also discussed additional gifts for Pastor Paula. Cindy will look in to getting her a stole.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. "Living with diabetes can be challenging to man-age day to day.” "There is no escape, no day off, no not thinking about this." "I have two jobs: the one I go out to do and earn money for and the other goes with me everywhere. It is type 1 diabetes and requires a lot of attention so that I can keep doing what I want to do in life." Every day, 4,110 people are diagnosed with one of the types of diabetes. Nearly 1/2 of American adults have diabetes or pre-diabetes. This is a staggering number per the National Institutes of Health Report. The person with diagnosis must decide to actively participate in the management. The team you build for support--the family, friends, medical professionals and community--is vital for success. Many don't believe that dia-betes is serious. But it is, and it can be deadly. It can lead to development of other diseases, to in-creased risk for blindness, heart attacks and amputations. There are many types of Diabetes. -Type 1 (formerly called Juvenile): is an autoimmune disease; most common under the age of 20; the beta cells of the pancreas stop producing insulin in the body and this results in very high blood sugars; Insulin injections are required to survive; diet and exercise are important and involvement of medical professionals is vital -Type 2 (formerly adult onset): is the most common type; is a metabolic disorder that results in high blood glucose levels caused by Insulin Resistance (the ineffective use of insulin produced in the body) and/or the body is unable to produce enough insulin; obesity & inactivity are components; this is a seri-ous medical condition -Pre-Diabetes: blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be type 2; the long term effects from diabetes may already be happening in the body (i.e., heart, kidney, blood ves-sels and nerve damage); lifestyle changes are vital to combat this diagnosis and prevent progression; genetics can be part of this -LADA or Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adulthood: becomes a form of type 1; aka "1.5 Diabetes"; develops in ages 25-40 or so; can be mistaken for type 2, so GAD Antibody Test and C-Peptide Test help to determine diagnosis; develops more slowly than type 1, childhood but will require insulin injec-tions for survival -MODY or Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young: strong genetic risk exists; not linked to obesity in youth; develops before age 25; does not always require insulin but does require treatment and man-agement -Gestational: high blood sugars develop with pregnancy; most are tested in weeks 16-18 with a glu-cose tolerance test; goes away with delivery; at risk to develop type 2 later in life; affects 1 in 20 preg-nancies -Double: a person with Type 1 develops Insulin Resistance (hallmark of type 2); may become obese; lifestyle and diet adaptations will help -Steroid Induced: steroids are used to reduce inflammation but they also increase insulin resistance; if used long term, ie daily have a higher risk to develop -Diabetes Insipidous: is rare, difficult to manage, can be deadly; excessive urination caused by antidi-uretic hormone or ADH and the effect on brain and kidneys; insipidous means "un-tasty"; causes in-clude head injury, tumor of brain, stroke, near-drowning, meningitis. Management of this disease is vital for survival, irregardless of the type. If you have the diagnosis--check your blood sugars and KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. See your medical provider, get the blood work done, do the necessary diet and exercise plans and take care of yourself. Work with an Endocri-nologist (hormone specialist) for all those with type 1 and for many with type 2. A Certified Diabetic Educator is a great person to have on your team! This disease is all about survival and to lessen com-plications! Your attitude and ability to adapt can make all the difference! Congratulations, John! John Lindstrom was the winner of the United Blood Services' Harley Davidson motorcycle giveaway. All donors be-tween June 1st and September 9th were entered in the contest.
