e MAG Team!Gratitude helps you to grow and expand. Gratitude brings joy and laughter into your life and the lives of all those around you.

A few weeks ago, I went to a home for blind children. I had visited orphanages and old folks’ homes before, but never a home for the younger generation who could not see.

Contacting these children has been a heart-rendering eye-opener for me.

In the world of these unfortunate children, the only way for them to know a direction is by holding another’s hand. In a world of darkness, a hand will lead you out.

Sad to say, in the world today, people are always so careful and even cynical. Trust is a rare commodity in the real world. Yet, with the blind children, trust is freely given out. It is ironic that although we can see, we are blind to so many things.

The one-day event has given me a lot of positive thinking, especially seeing these unfortunate children being so thankful to our presence and the food we contributed.

I often hear people say: Think positive.

However, many times many ask me how to start thinking positive and stay positive? My answer to them: To be positive, you need to have gratitude.

To be thankful that everything around you is a miracle, a gift.

These blind children have lost their sense of sight, and yet they are still so grateful to possess other senses. They are grateful for the smallest things in their lives, things like a hand that guides them and leads their way. There might be many unknowns in their world, yet they remain positive to face it, without fear.

With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day coming up, we should take time to be grateful for our parents. I know many who wish to show their appreciation for their parents, but are unable to.

Our parents will grow old, and one day they will leave us. Take the opportunity to tell your parents how much you love them.

As the month of June approaches, we will be enjoying football’s most spectacular World Cup in South Africa and for the children, their mid-year school holidays.

As we enjoy during this period of time, please be grateful as well that we have been given the gift to enjoy these things.

I feel blessed. I feel gratified.

There’s so much joy and laughter deep inside me as I wish all parents: Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Father’s Day!

Cheers,Collin Chee

CARPETS are now symbols of enduring passion, a collec-tor’s item of high-standard artwork.

Lotto Carpets Gallery takes a lot of pride as its tradition has been passed down through six generations of the Mir family.

The family’s heritage spans over 150 years and its mission is to reintroduce carpets as works of art rather than just a static floor covering.

Headed by Mr. Abid Hussain Mir, the company has developed in Singapore from a humble warehouse in Katong to a bustling art gallery now located at Block 26 Dempsey Road #01-04.

Today, joined by his two sons, Imran Abid Mir and Noman Abid Mir, Mr. Mir dreams of bringing Lotto Carpets Gallery to new heights.

As carpet-merchant Mr. Mir says passionately: “The sky is the limit!’.

His prime goal is to advice clients on the A-B-Cs of exclusive carpetry.

Caring way to sell carpets

The woven arts pose as a sea of knowledge as the history of carpets is thousands of years old. The oldest carpet in the world, the “Pazryk” dates back to 500BC. One of the oldest art forms to exist, the carpet represents different cultures, religions, traditions and people from every major part of the world.

Carpets have been made as far away as China, Russia, Turkey, India and Persia, not to mention numerous tribes and villages that are no longer in existence today. An understanding of the various aspects of the carpet including texture, knot density, colours and patterns provides the admirer with a better consideration of the value of their piece along with an increased love and passion for the woven arts.

Says Imran Abid Mir: “Upholding the Lotto Carpets name and pride puts upon us a great responsibility. This is why we strive to provide in-depth and detailed knowledge about our carpets and share this with our clients to help them with their own appreciation and understanding of their carpet. And they keep coming back for more!”

One of Dempsey’s original tenants, Lotto Carpets Gallery was formerly known as Lotto Carpets and Antique Carpet Corner.

Walking into Lotto Carpets Gallery, the revolutionary design of the store provides a unique concept of viewing and appreciating carpets and it takes you into a different world. Having no other branches, Lotto Carpets Gallery is positioned as the premier carpet purveyors, focusing on antique and oriental masterpieces.

One of the widest ranges of handmade carpets seen in Asean is displayed at Lotto Carpets Gallery along with an antique selection that rivals any of the world's best. A wide variety of contemporary rugs and carpets in various colours, patterns and qualities made in India, Kashmir, Nepal, Iran and other areas adorn the walls of the gallery.

The professional in-house master repairmen and washing experts from reputable factories are able to provide all kinds of repairs to the Lotto Carpet Gallery clientele. The Gallery provides washing, cleaning and restoration services for damages of any extent. The cleaning services available range from a simple cleaning or shampoo wash, to the powerful, close clean of the herb washes.

Lotto Carpets Gallery takes pride in sharing knowledge. Uniquely, a carpet-washing demonstration and talks to let their clients develop a rich understanding of what they purchase in the future and how to maintain their rugs. Eduational tours in the form of a morning coffee session for the ladies of the American Club and field trips for the children of The Little Mandarins kindergarten have been successfully conducted at the gallery. These tours included a washing

demonstration and talks on how to maintain carpets.

Mr. Abid Mir and his family and staff have organised two charity auctions since the beginning of the year to help the Down Syndrome Association of Singapore (DSA) and UNIFEM to raise $50.000 each.

The second auction, titled “Fabric of Life” was held in collaboration with the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Singapore(OGSS), in line with International Women’s Day.

Praises have come from many beneficiaries. Says Dr Saba Iqbal of the DSA: “Your generosity is an exemplary act of philanthropy to be emulated by others.” Pia Bruce of UNIFEM says: “We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your support and contribution of $50,000”.

Dr. Suresh Nair, President of the OGSS, says: “The Obstet-rical and Gynaecological Society of Singapore is indeed honoured to have been associated with Lotto Carpets Gallery and your family in this charitable event.”

The formula is right for Lotto Carpets Gallery: Doing it the caring way is perhaps the most artful way of carpet-appreciation.

EVERY year, when it gets to the months of May and June, people start to plan for dinners and do their last minute shopping. It is the time for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and everybody is in a mad rush for these two days. Yet, are people treating these occasions as more of a responsibility in modern times?

In land scarce Singapore, there are many who live with their parents, even after they are married. And when people spend so much time with each other, they are bound to start taking some things for granted.

Many young people constantly lament the need of celebrating Mother’s and Father’s Days, citing commercialism and jacked-up restaurant prices as reasons. Many a times, people grouch that they have dinner with their parents most of the time, and that it is superficial to celebrate their love for their parents only on a particular day of the year.

The common gripe about commercialization of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day may be true. Every year, when the month of May comes about, carnations see their prices shoot up faster than the hottest stocks, just like what happens to roses during Valentines’ Day. Neckties, tie clips, and leather belts are suddenly the most popular items in June.

Restaurants fall over themselves offering the best (and usually more expensive) set menus on these days, implying that the best way to show your appreciation for your parents is to pay higher-than-normal prices. Paying more is not enough, you have to book early to avoid disappointment.

The result is that many people actually avoid celebrating Father’s and Mother’s Day on the day itself. Many tend to celebrate the occasion a week before or after the actual day, while others

forego the occasion altogether, preferring to show their love for their parents on a day-to-day basis.

How often do people really show their appreciation for their parents? Everyday life with your parents is mundane, dinner a routine affair. With their work and social life, most people’s interaction with their parents is reduced to greetings when they get home, and commenting about some random news or gossip during dinnertime.

It is absurd to claim that Father’s and Mother’s Day is unnecessary

as long as one spends time regularly with one’s parents and see them everyday. Spending time regularly with our spouses or friends does not excuse us from not

celebrating their birthdays. If we celebrate birthdays, or any other day for that matter, what’s wrong with celebrating Father’s and

Mother’s Day?

This excuses is as flimsy as saying that reunion dinners on Chinese New Year’s eve are unnecessary for a Chinese family that lives

together, or that a person who is constantly patriotic does not need

to celebrate National Day.

Father’s Day and Mother’s Day is a chance for people to show that despite the constant interaction and familiarity, they do not take their parents for granted. It is a chance for people to step out from their normal routine to really make it a special day for their parents.

Perhaps it is due to Singapore’s small size. In bigger countries where family members may

live hundreds of miles apart, occasions like Father’s Day and Mother’s Day are an opportunity for the whole family to come together and spend time with each other.

These days are for people to really show how important their

parents mean to them, not for people to be complaining about restaurant prices.

Even if the restaurants do raise their prices for their special Mother’s Day or Father’s Day dinner, does that amount

of money really mean more than your love for your parents?

Eating out at restaurants, or buying carnations, is not the only way people

can celebrate Father’s Day and Mother’s Day. Something as simple as having dinner at home together as a family is sometimes more than enough. After all, one cannot put a price tag on love.

So as the months of May and June come around, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gets closer, take this opportunity to really reflect on your life. Be thankful for all that your parents have done for you, and be thankful for them.

Humans tend to take things for granted, so out of three hundred and sixty-five days in a year, why not take this one day to show your parents how much you love them?

Remember, its not about the bouquets of carnations, nor the price of the special meal. Sometimes, it is really the thought that counts.

Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Father’s Day.

Happy Mother’s Day Happy Father’s Day

Every year, we make it a point to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. It’s a simple affair where the whole family goes out for dinner. I’m based in Australia now, but I make the effort to spend these days with my family. So there isn’t any specially memorable Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, because every year is special and memorable.

It is a matter of how one would like to express these days to their parents. I am of the idea to spend a leisurely and relaxing day with my parents on these days be it a simple meal at home or an outing. As most families attribute only one reunion gathering during the New Year, one can add another 2 meaningful days in a year to get together.

In fact, we should show our appreciation to our parents every day if we can. However, for those children who are not living with their parents or those who have their own family units, every day appreciation would difficult. On the other hand, parents are definitely aware of their children’s love and appreciation as they know their children well and it is expressed in their interactions and communications.

- Cecilia Teo, Singaporean, General Manager of SH Tours

My mother’s birthday falls very close to Mother’s Day so each year, we throw a small party for her to celebrate both Mother’s Day and also her birthday. I think that it’s very important to celebrate Mother’s Day, because it is the one day in a year for us to show our appreciation for our mothers. With our hectic lifestyles, we don’t usually get much time to spend with our loved ones, so these occasions are very valuable for us

to connect with our parents.

- Andrea D’ Cruz, Singaporean. Partner of Cinq Salon

Medan

This is one of the best and most popular mid-level Chinese restaurants in Medan. Today, there are eight Nelayan Seafood Restaurants in Medan itself, and they are one of the few mid-level Chinese restaurants that are visited by both the local Indo-nesians and the Indonesian Chinese.

Nelayan’s specialty is in seafood, and their signature dish is Lobster Salad. But surprisingly, one of their best selling dishes is their Pan Cake Durian, which makes up to fifteen percent of their sales. The secret is in the durian paste. The durian paste is made daily from fresh durians with no added ingredients. In other words, this durian puff really is one hundred percent fresh durian!

Some of the key elements to Nelayan’s success are in their attention to detail and the value they put on quality. The head chef of Nelayan is Singaporean, and he special-izes in their seafood dishes. For their dim-sum, they hired chefs from Guangzhou. All this so that the food that is dished out is made authentic and of the best quality.

Another reason why Nelayan has been so popular in Medan is because they have bothered to take into account local palates. Their Mie Udang Gala Saos Pedas seems like a very simple dish, and yet the fusion taste has made it popular amongst local Indonesians and Indonesian Chinese alike.

Nelayan Seafood Restaurant

A large, deep-fried prawn is placed on top of traditional Chinese noodles, garnished with spring onions, and then slathered with a type of tomato sauce. This combina-tion of Chinese noodles, Italian tomato sauce and Japanese tempura prawns has created a dish that has wowed many in Medan.

MedanFor the past one year, I have been based in Medan almost three-quarters of the time. I have been away from my home in Singapore so much that my place in Medan feels almost like home. The only thing missing is my family. Yet, this has given me a real opportunity to get to understand and identify with this city.

In my journeys, I have been blessed to meet some very friendly and special people, who have helped me to grow to love the city as a home. So when some friends visited me from Singapore, I simply could not pass up the opportunity to introduce them to this city. Welcome, my friends. This is Medan.

A SEK – Let me introduce you to a man known as “Sex”. In Bahasa Indonesia, “sek” means “sex”, and that is the nickname that customers have given him. The reason is simple: A Sek has a habit of giving larger helpings to female custom-ers, so that not only do they come back often, but they will bring their families along as well.

A Sek sells a very unique dish – “Tok Tok”. Although I had never heard the name of the dish before, a first look at “Tok Tok” brought me back to my childhood. A dish that consists of pig’s blood cake and pig’s liver cooked together in a special sauce and served with fried crackers, this dish used to be sold at roadside stalls during my childhood.

I was apprehensive at first. People tend to beautify things in their memories, and they always remember their childhood comfort foods as tasting better than they were. I was afraid that this dish would burst my bubble. I finished the dish within a few spoonfuls.

A Sek’s children have no interest in taking over his business, and so he is still going strong at the age of 62. Thankfully, his nephew has expressed interest in cooking, and has been helping out at the stall.

I sincerely hope that someone like A Sek, and his food, will stay on. The world needs more people like him, who smiles benignly whenever someone calls him by his nickname of “Sex”.

AH HAI – Ah Hai graduated from college with a diploma sixteen years ago. Having a diploma in Indonesia during that time was a pretty big deal, and

yet in 1993, the decided to take over his ageing mother’s business and sell “char kway teow”.

Make no mistake, this “char kway teow” is different from the Singaporean version. For one, the colour is not as dark. Secondly, there are no cock-les. What Ah Hai’s “char kway teow” excels in, however, is in its unique identity. He uses larger than normal prawns in his dish, and his sauce is really one-of-its-kind: spicy with a hint of oysters.

Ah Hai has another dish that visitors must try: Fried Rice with Beef. The beef that he uses in his fried rice is bought fresh every morning, and

any leftovers are thrown away every night. The result is a plate of fragrant fried rice with wonderfully tender beef strips.

Allow me to introduce you to where I live. Cemara Asri is a private housing complex built with 2,500 landed houses. It may be all walled up, but Cemara Asri is a complex that is almost self-sustainable. You can find almost anything in there, except for a big shopping centre. And you will not need that here.

Now, Cemara Asri is full of great facilities. It houses probably the best badminton court in Sumatra, a soccer field, a swimming pool, a go-kart track, and even an international school.

Yet the best thing about Cemara Asri is not even about the facilities. It is about the peace and serenity that you can find in a self-contained complex like this. With a local market right outside of Cemara Asri which consists of more than 500 stalls, and a multitude of food stalls and restaurants within the complex, everything is so convenient that you hardly find yourself missing the hustle and bustle of city life.

One of the most important factors in Cemara Asri is its safety. Whenever people ask me how safe Cemara Asri is, I always answer them that I can take a stroll around the complex in the wee hours of the night and nothing will happen to me. There are three shifts of security for the complex, and each one of these security officers is rigorously trained in various martial arts, all in order to make sure that the residents within the compound are safe.

The only thing more important than safety in a home is peace. One of the landmarks of Cemara Asri is this Chinese temple. Built to resemble a palace in both size and grandeur, this temple can even be considered as a tourist attraction in Cemara Asri. But what I really want to talk about is the pond beside the temple.

my humble abode - Cemara Asri

There is a small island in the middle of the pond, and somehow this pond has grown to develop its own ecosystem. To date, there are more than one hundred different species of animals living in the pond. The birds and fishes live there undisturbed by the human race, and it is amazing to see this wonder of nature so close to civilization.

This young man has been shaking up the quiet commu-nity of Cemara Asri lately with his ambitious project.

A new-generation young Indonesian Chinese, Yan Sen studied in Singapore for five years to return with a degree in Business Administration. But instead of taking over the family business,

Yan Sen set out to achieve his dream of opening a gym and a café.

During weekends, when evening comes, many residents outside Cemara Asri like to take a stroll down to the pond and just enjoy the serene surroundings. Sunday mornings will see some people even having a picnic on the grass beside the pond.

And it is this serenity that I felt really symbolised Cemara Asri. The tranquillity here allows me to just relax and have some peace of mind. It helps me to move away from the busy life in the city and really just reflect on my life in general.

This I think, is the main reason why I like Cemara Asri. Simple, yet so beautiful!

Fastbreak Cafe @ Cemara Asri

A gym enthusiast, Yan Sen had always entertained ideas of combining a gym and a café. When he returned to Medan after his studies, he set out to realise his dreams in style. Using up to seven shop houses in Cemara Asri, Yan Sen has started his Fastbreak Family Gym and Fastbreak Café.

Today, the business is doing well. Within half a year of opening, the gym already has more than three hundred members. The café is now a popular spot for Cemara Asri residents to hang out with their friends. With the free wireless internet service, I myself have spent numerous afternoons at this café either working on my laptop or just enjoying a good book with a cup of coffee.

Being a health enthusiast, Yan Sen is naturally particular about the nu-tritional value of the food served at Fastbreak Café. But you do not have to worry about the taste, or the quality, because all the details are taken care of at Fastbreak Café. The chefs are all hired from top hotels and restaurants in Indonesia, and as you can see from the pictures, the food all look mouth-watering. Trust me, they taste even better.

ONCE every four years, the world goes mad. People everywhere stop their routines to participate in this global phenomenon. Even those who are normally uninterested will be forced to take a stand. This is the time for the greatest sporting event in the world. The World Cup has come again.

This year’s World Cup will be held in South Africa, the first to be held in the African continent. For the first time in history, this football-crazy continent will play host to the best teams in the world, all for a chance to claim the title of World Champions.

As a preview to this sporting phenomenon, we will take you on an introductory tour of the host country, to witness her diverse culture and history.

South Africa may have been the site of much political turmoil in the past, but it has blossomed into one of the most beautiful and prosperous countries in the world.

We start our tour in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa. This city will host the opening match of the 2010 World Cup, as well as the Final. It is also the most logical city to start your tour of South Africa. Not only is Johannesburg situated close to the center of South Africa, the O.R. Tambo International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Africa, providing you with a gateway to the rest of the country.

For those interested in South Africa’s political history, visit the Apartheid Museum and the Mandela Museum. The Apartheid Museum illustrates the history of Apartheid in South Africa, while the Mandela Museum is located in the former home of Nelson Mandela and is filled with his personal artifacts.

Take a trip down to the Cradle of Humankind, an archaeological site where some of humanity’s earliest ancestors have been found. Immerse yourself in the diverse cultures of the different tribes of South Africa in the Lesedi Cultural Village.

Interested in shopping? Worry not. Sandton City, Hyde Park and Greenstone Mall in Johannesburg are some of the largest shopping centres in South Africa.

If you are into water sports and sunny skies, there are three great cities for you to choose from. The coastal cities of Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth offer some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa.

Durban is the busiest port in Africa, and also a popular tourist destination. Located on the eastern coast, Durban’s Golden Mile beachfront is a great place for everybody to relax and chill-out. Visit the uShaka Marine World, the 5th largest aquarium in the world, or shop your fill at Gateway Theatre of Shopping, the largest shopping complex in Africa.

Experience

The most popular tourist destination in South Africa is Cape Town, a city renowned for its harbour, and the historical impact on 17th century trade. Climb up Table Mountain, a flat-topped mountain that overlooks the city of Cape Town, or venture down to the Cape of Good Hope.

You can also visit Robben Island, a former prison island that used to house political prisoners like Nelson Mandela and Jacob Zuma.

True watersports enthusiasts must visit Port Elizabeth, the watersports capital of South Africa. This city is home to scuba diving, game fishing charters, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding to name but a few. Additionally, there are many cruises offered from the harbour, from sunset cruises to view dolphins to whale watching tours.

Pretoria is the administrative capital of South Africa, and therefore its National Capi-tal. Home to the Mahlamba Ndlopfu, presidential residence of South Africa, and the Union Buildings, Pretoria is also where you can find the Voortrekker Monument.

Seated on a hilltop, the Voortrekker Monument can be seen from almost location in the city. The massive granite structure was built to commemorate the Voortrekkers, pioneers who moved from the Cape Colony into the interior of what is now South Africa.

The judicial capital of South Africa is Bloemfontein. Known as the City of Roses, Bloemfontein hosts an annual Bloemfontein Rose Festival. Unbeknownst to many, Bloemfontein is also the birthplace of legendary writer, J.R.R. Tolkien.

To the north of South Africa, tourists can visit the cities of Polokwane, Rustenburg, and Nelspruit, each with their own diverse cultures and landmarks.

Polokwane is home to the Bakone Malapa Northern Sotho Open-Air Museum, which depicts the traditional and modern-day lifestyle of the Bakone people.

Visitors to Rustenburg have a wealth of tourist attractions to choose from. A number of nature reserves are available in the vicinity of Rustenburg, including Pilanesberg Game Reserve, fourth largest National Park in South Africa.

Revellers can take a trip down to Sun City, one of the largest and most luxurious casinos and resorts in Africa. With two international-standard golf courses and a entertainment park, Sun City is a major entertainment hub in Africa.

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, located very near the city of Nelspruit. Home to a 147 species of mammals, Kruger National Park houses more species of wildlife than any other African Game Reserve, including many endangered species.

South Africa is a land that is rich in natural resources and cultural diversity. What better place than this to host the World Cup, a sporting event that brings the world together in celebration of diversity, a convergence of peoples in honour of peace and harmony?

IT was a nice, breezy Sunday morning that welcomed me when I left the car. I should have parked it in the Dempsey 6ix and 7even carpark, which had free parking. That was probably where Ellen had parked her car. Oh well, I would be happy to take a walk.

I walked past the entrance of Muthu’s Flavors as I left the car park. Although this outlet was pretty new, Muthu’s Flavors held a lot of memories for me. Memories of myself gobbling up their Fish Head Curry at the original Muthu’s Curry outlet on Race Course Road. I’ve come a long way since then, but so has Muthu’s Curry. The Muthu’s Flavors outlet was opened to introduce traditional Indian food with a touch of modern fine-dining. The Fish Head Curry is still there though, and every bit as delicious as I remember it.

The view that entered my eyes as I rounded the corner was beautiful. The areas around Dempsey, so full of lush greenery, simply brought an aura of tranquillity to this place. I had to resist my desire to enter the next restaurant that I walked past, because there was no way Ellen was going to forgive me for turning up with yet another bottle of wine from Bacchus.

A German restaurant, bar and winery all rolled into one, Bacchus specialised in German wines and cuisine. German wines may not be as well-known as wines from other regions of Europe, but they were every bit as good, and sometimes even better. Their Heuholzer Dachsteiger, a superb version of Riesling, is a bottle of pure magic. I buy a bottle whenever the supply comes in, but not today.

The waitress smiled at me as I walked past Grand Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant. She was the same nice lady who served us last week when I came down with my mother for a early celebration of Mother’s Day. It takes a lot to impress my mother, who came from Hong Kong, when it came to Dim-Sum, but she was definitely impressed that time. The signature Deep Fried Carrot Cake, crispy on the outside and meltingly soft on the inside, managed to persuade her stubborn and very critical tastebuds to wonder in amazement. Truly a coup by Chef Tonny Chan.

I looked longingly at the doors of Pamplemousse as I walked past. This was the venue of Ellen’s weekly Girl’s Night Out, and one of our rules was to never intrude each others’ territories. I would have been delighted to enter, though. Ellen was forever telling me about how lively and boisterous this bistro was, contrary to the very delicate exterior. She loved the fusion dishes at Pamplemousse, like the Uni Tagliolini and especially the wonderful "Toast & Milo". A pretty quaint dessert to find in a proper restaurant, it is actually Milo ice-cream with toasted brioche and caramelised bananas.

In order to fulfil my grocery list, I had to pick up some soap from Organic Clover next. I was once ‘forced’ to attend a soap-making lesson here with Ellen, and amazingly, I enjoyed the experience. It was pretty cool to make my own soap, and even cooler using it later on, knowing that everything about the fragrance was natural, organic, and environmentally friendly.

I was still early, and so I decided to skip over to John Erdos Home, which meant passing by E Food and Wine first. This café is owned by John Er-dos as well, and although the chefs are local, the menu and recipes are the hardwork of John’s mother, with a slight Asian twist from John. This is home-cooked Long Island comfort food at its best, and whether be it the Blueberry Pancake breakfast, the homemade Crab Cakes, the Tuna Steak, or the good ol’ American burger, the food here never fails to remind me of the warmth and comfort of home.

Which I guess, is where John Erdos Home comes in. This is a place that I have a love-hate relationship with. I love the furniture here, and I hate John Erdos for being so damned good. Almost every piece of furniture at home came from here, be it bed or bookshelf, drawers or dressing table. There is something about how John combines modern lines with Asian and Oriental inspirations on his solid wood creations. I had to drag myself away 15 minutes later before I bought another bookcase.

Ellen was waiting for me at PowerMoves Pilates when I went to pick her up. She was beaming, as she would after all her Pilates lessons here. I love to see my wife so happy, and she always says that it is because she experiences a realignment of her body, mind and soul during her lessons, bringing her a deep sense of universal calm. Very deep. All I know is, there is a Pilates studio that is built in the midst of some of the most beautiful scenery on Dempsey Hill, winning awards like “Most Beautiful Pilates Studio” from Balanced Body Inc USA and SHAPE magazine, and most importantly, making my wife happy.

We went around the front again, to our final destination, CM-PB. Everybody was waiting for us there. As usual, the guys were loung-ing on one of the couches discussing last night’s big match while the girls were crowding around another crouch, probably gossiping. We wanted to join our friends at the tables, but were suddenly obstructed by a wall of children materialising at our feet. The kids loved CM-PB, with the endless cereals, the wide area for them to play around, and most importantly, the swing at the back. This was the favourite chilling out place for all of us. Sometimes, it is for the girls and their mojitos, sometimes it is for us guys and our beers and football. Sometimes, like today, it is for family. CM-PB always feels relaxing, cozy, and friendly. Most importantly, it feels like home.

YOU are strolling along the streets of Seoul at night. It’s cold and you huddle into your jacket with shivering fingers, shuddering with every attack from the merciless wind.

You find yourself wishing for some hot broth or food to fend off the cold.

Suddenly, you spot a brightly-lit food stall by the side of the street with a myriad of steaming hot food and aromas tempting you with every waft.

Like many others, you find yourself drawn to one of the most famous landmarks on the streets of Seoul – 포장마차, pronounced as Po-Jang-Ma-Cha.

Eating Off the Streets of Seoul

Eating at pojangmacha is not just about food. Sharing a plate of Tteok Bok Gi not only fills the stomach but also provides a casual setting for bonding with friends. At some stalls, alcohol such as Korean soju serves to compliment the food and company.

Pojangmacha is an important part of street culture. Here’s a quick guide to some of the most common foods available at the stalls:

Stir-Fried Spicy Rice Cake 떡볶이 (Tteok Bok Gi)

This bright red dish often initiates many non-Koreans into Korean cuisine. It consists of small rice cake sticks (Tteok) stir fried with sweet and spicy red pepper paste sauce until they expand and turn soft and chewy. Other ingredients such as leek, fish cake and boiled eggs are often added to the dish.

One small tip is to look for tteok that looks fatter than the width of your finger. This usually means that the tteok has been cooked for a while so it would be softer, more chewy and flavourful. Another tip: The sauce goes exceptionally well with the other food listed in this guide.

Food of the StreetsStreet food, more commonly known as분식 (pronounced as bun shik) is popular in Seoul and other parts of South Korea. Delicious, affordable and readily available, they can be found at street side food stalls known as pojangmacha, which literally translates to “covered wagons”.

They are often small makeshift stalls made out of canvas or even lorries. While some are seen in the day, most begin their day at night, setting up shop outside train and bus stations, popular shopping and party districts and areas with lots of students.

The immense popularity of Korean dramas has made pojangmacha almost a travel destination in itself. Most of the food cost about 500 to 1500 won per serving, depending on the food and location. While some provide seats, eating as you stand around the stall is common experience.

– currently in South Korea completing her course in Korean language

Eating Off the Streets of SeoulFish Cake 오뎅 (O-Deng)

This dish is pure heaven on cold nights, making it a popular choice during winter. It consists of pressed fish cake cooked in seasoned broth. Radish is often added into the broth as well. The odeng at these stalls are usually served in the form of skewers which you can pick up and tuck into. The bill would be based on the number of sticks you consume. Soya sauce for dipping can be found at the side.

Here’s the best part: The stomach-warming broth is usually offered free of charge. Simply pick up a paper cup and slurp away!

Korean Sausage순대 (Sun-Dae)

Don’t be alarmed if you spot a long, black piece of meat at a pojangmacha. That’s sundae, a Korean sausage made by stuffing pig intestines with a mixture of ingredients such as glass noodles, barley, glutinous rice, pork and pig’s blood. The sausage is then boiled or steamed before it is cut into bite-size pieces. Sundae is a common sight at pojangmacha and is also used in other dishes such as soup.

Seaweed Rice Rolls 김밥 (Kim-Bap)

The easiest way to introduce this dish would be thinking of it as the Korean equivalent of sushi rolls. Kimbap can be readily found at various Korean eateries and kimbap shops in South Korea. Due to its handy size and convenience, it is often spotted at picnics, outings or packed lunches.

kimbap primarily consists of rice (bap) wrapped into a roll with seaweed (kim) with a variety of ingredients such as egg, sausage, carrot, spinach, cucumber and pickled radish. Unlike Japanese sushi rolls, the rice is often seasoned with salt and sesame oil instead of vinegar and raw materials are hardly, if not never, used. The ingredients for kimbap can vary greatly from shop to shop and personal preferences. At some shops, you will even find cheese kimbap, tonkatsu kimbap and so on.

The kimbap at pojanmachas, however, tend to be smaller and shorter versions of kimbap you find in the shops, with lesser ingredients. This makes them more handy and a fried version of this dish is very popular among customers.

Fried Foods 튀김 (Tui-Kim)

This is the perfect dish for fried food lovers. To make this dish, various types of food such as sweet potato, vegetables, sausages, squid, mandu (dumpling) and kimbap are covered with a thick batter and deep fried. Don’t worry about your food being cold. The ajumma (Korean term for an elderly woman) or ajusshi (Korean term for elderly man) will fry and heat up your selection after your order.

Remember your tteok bok gi sauce? This is one dish that would compli-ment it perfectly!

Survival Korean PhrasesThis is a simple pronounciation guide to basic Korean phrases which will be useful when you order at a pojangmacha!An-nyeong-ha-se-yo: HelloEol-ma-ye-yo? : How much is it? chu-se-yo: Please give me ________. (Writer’s tip: Point at the food you’d like and say yi-keo-chu-se-yeo)Kam-sa-ham-ni-da: Thank you

LIFE was not a bed of roses when I was a kid.

I adhered to solid lifestyle rules: Waking up every morning for school, getting scolded every day by my teacher and living off a measly daily allowance of 40 cents.

I managed pretty well: A drink, a main course, and a dessert.

Of course, it was a cup of coloured syrup water for 10 cents, a 20-cent bowl of noodles, and 10 cents for two tubes of hawthorn coins.

The sweet and sour flakes were my favourite snacks back then. Not only were they refreshingly sour, the whole process of eating was fun. I would try to lift the flakes out one by one without breaking them, and when I found a stack of three which were stuck together, I felt like I found a piece of treasure.

So imagine how I felt when I entered En Dian Xin and discovered that they had my favourite childhood snack as one of their signature desserts?

Granted, it’s no longer a sugary flake. Instead, they have taken the hawthorn out of the coins, and made it into a jelly. Known as the Hawthorn Roselle Konnyaku Jelly, the purple Hawthorn jelly sits in the middle of the plate shaped like a flower bud surrounded by colourful cubes of konnyaku and nata de coco.

It sort of dampened my manly image, having a purple rosebud jelly sitting in front of me. But one bump of the table and I immediately found myself back to my childhood.

You see, it may have lost its shape and texture, but the element of fun is still here!

The hawthorn jelly here is jiggly. By jiggly, I mean that it literally dances in delight with every bump of the table. It was so fascinating that I actually spent five minutes shaking the table and watching the jelly wobble!

All this jiggling made me hungry for more, and so with the fervent recommendation of the owner, I went for broke and ordered something which I have never eaten before, the Almond Cream with Green Tea Ice-cream and Azuki Beans.

You see, ever since I was a child, I hated any foods remotely resembling almond cream. Some say that almond cream smells like cockroaches, others say it smells like mothballs! All I know is that I gag every time I get a whiff of almond.

So it was a huge step, ordering the almond cream. In fact, I had a paper bag on my lap just in case. The bowl of almond cream was brought to my table. Nothing happened.

I lowered my head to give it a smell. No smell. Then, feeling braver, I took the plunge and sent a spoonful of the cream into my mouth.

You know what? It wasn’t half bad. In fact, I managed to finish the whole bowl!

The trick, I suspect, is in the green tea ice-cream. The ice-cream gave the almond cream an added creaminess. More importantly, I think, the green tea fragrance managed to overcome the smell of the almond cream, while the azuki beans gave the dessert a much needed boost of sweetness.

I can’t take almond cream, and yet I found it pretty good, so if you enjoy almond cream, I can pretty much guarantee that you will love it here.

En Dian Xin, in a nutshell, was truly a yummy experience.

I had a chance to revisit my childhood memories. I had the chance to overcome of the greatest fears of my life.

Most importantly, I had the chance to enjoy a really good meal. Whether you’re looking for a satisfying meal, or a creative take on some traditional desserts, or even trip down memory’s lane, En Dian Xin is somewhere you should visit.

Not just because they’re different, but simply because they’re yummy good.

24/7 Services @

BATAM and massage may rhyme in many awkwardly racy ways.

For a greenhorn, just recently married, I was nervous when I had my massage baptism in the nearby Indonesian island. Up until then, the only image I had of massages in Batam was of massages that came with “special” services.

Given the writing assignment, I felt like a lamb being led into a lion’s den. But I was determined to protect my chastity from those so-called masseurs.

However, I was assured that Sport Massage & Spa was a place for authentic “real” massage. And how true it turned out to be as I experienced the very best in experienced therapists who offer value-for-money treat.

In addition to foot reflexology and spa services, I recommend these four massage services:

Four Hand Massage: The most luxurious, with two therapists working together on your body. They are trained to move at the same rhythm in harmony with each other, so that you feel a constant sensation of relaxation from head to toe.

Thai Mixing Massage: A new sort of fusion massage, where mas-sage techniques from China, India and Japan are mixed into basic Thai massage to sooth your deep muscle tissue, improving your blood circulation.

Herbal Massage: A genuine form of aromatherapy treatment mixed with mas-sage. An aromatherapy machine is used to infuse the air with scented oils while the therapist conducts the massage using special herbal packs.

Traditional Massage: The original Indonesian Javanese massage. Using strong and smooth strokes, the therapist works on the length of the muscle to unravel knots and dissolve muscular tension.

Having a stiff neck and back from my recent extra workload, I opted for the traditional massage, even though I doubted the petite therapist would have enough strength to unravel the knots in my shoulders. Once again, I was quickly proven wrong. This time, it was a much more painful experience.

She seemed to possess superhuman strength, for I could feel the fibers in my back dissolving with every push of her hands. I was definitely glad that I had been respect-ful to her, because I now believe she could have dislocated every bone in my body!

LIFESTYLEe text: alex ngai

Massage with a true message

Instead, she punched my feet. And stepped on my back. With both feet. And then she tip-toed. All this was in addition to the pushing, rubbing and kneading that she did with my back. It was painful at first, when years-worth of muscle tension was being forcefully eradicated, but eventually, it became so relaxing that I dozed off.

By the time she woke me up, I felt like a new man.

It seemed as if I had slept for a lifetime, every ounce of stress and fatigue simply disappeared. I thanked her profusely while marveling at how nimble and relaxed my whole body felt. Even my feet felt fresh after being punched.

It was with a spring in my step as I walked out of Sport Massage & Spa with a promise to forget all the rumours about Batam. Simply because these highly-trained thera-pists will change your mind with their authentic and powerful traditional massage.

You will walk out of here feeling like you’ve just been reborn, even if you need to get your feet punched in the process.

LAZARUS Enochken is no stranger to risk.

More than 15 years ago, he stopped his designing business to go into the in-dustry of traditional Chinese pastry. It took years of trial and error before he finally perfected his recipes, but today, Da Shao Ye ( ) is famous for its pastries and mooncakes.

“We actually have many clients from Indonesia, Malaysia. They visit us specially for our pastries and mooncakes whenever they are here on holiday, and buy over 10 boxes of our pastries back to their home countries,” says Lazarus.

Having successfully secured a foothold in the local and regional pastry market, Lazarus is ready to take on new challenges again. With a new menu of savoury delicacies and an exciting business plan, Lazarus is set to take on the F&B world one more time.

“Traditional Chinese pastries are usually more popular with the elderly, but Da Shao Ye ( )’s signature pastry – Shao Bing is famous, even 7-year old kids love it. With this experience, it made sense for our next step to be in savoury foods. Our new menu is targeted at Singaporeans who like to eat snacks on the go, especially the younger generation.”

A new menu targeted at young people does not necessarily mean new-fangled fusion flavours. Instead, everything on the menu is Da Shao Ye( )’s traditional version of all-time favourites, from Chee Cheong Fun (rice noodle rolls) to their trademark Golden Fish Wraps.

“We wanted to make sure that our food retains the traditional feel of Da Shao Ye( ). Everything is handmade from our own secret recipes so that we can ensure the quality of the food.” Lazarus reminds me seriously.

And he is serious. Prior to this interview, Lazarus was telling us how he was up till 4am the night before making their signature sauce and special mushroom sauce.

Starting this new venture has not been easy on Lazarus at all. The recipes for the new menu took him 5 years of endless research and testing before he was confident that the food was good.

“When it comes to food, we don’t want to play around. Everything must be of the highest quality before we can let our customers eat. We’ve held countless food tastings and done all our market research to make sure that our food is popular with our customers before we even started selling.”

This time, Lazarus will not be doing it alone. Their new business strategy of s allows new investors to join the company in the

business plan.

“Our plan is to open up to 100 stalls in Singapore or even neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.” Not only will the new sbe able to market and sell the new savoury menu using the established Da Shao Ye( ) brand, but they will also be entitled to sell Da Shao Ye( )’s traditional pastries and mooncakes, a privilege which Lazarus has been very protective of until now.

“When we decided on this ‘ ’ strategy, I wanted to make sure that people who join us will really be our investors. This meant that they should be able to make use of our branding, as well as our mainstays of traditional pastries.”

This is definitely a piece of good news for potential investors, as well as for fans of Da Shao Ye( )’s food.

“Our customers are the most important people to us. Without their support, Da Shao Ye( ) would never have been able to grow to its current status. And it was actually their suggestions that led to us exploring the possibilities of selling savoury treats.”

Response has for the strategy has been brisk, and we will be looking forward to seeing Da Shao Ye( )stalls popping up across Singapore. After getting to know Lazarus, one cannot help but be impressed by his business acumen, his creativity, and most importantly, his courage.

“I have always believed in failure. With every failure, I can learn from my mistakes and find true success.” Wise words indeed.
