Week 4 at WASPS

We have shivered through another very chilly week at WASPS. The week

started with our T-ball team braving the elements (read further down for

results) and then students meeting the challenges of extreme weather

(inside time) and outdoor play. Never ceases to amaze me though,

no matter how cold it is or how many times we advise the children

– some still insist on running around in shorts and t-shirts.

WASPS T-ball Results!

Congratulations to Jarrod, Ari, Sione , Koyla, Daniel, James, Izayah, Elijah and

George for braving the elements to play four magnificent games. Our team

finished 3rd overall which was a fabulous result. I would like to also thank

and congratulations to Miss K, who also braved the elements to offer her

words of wisdom and encouragement to the team from the side line.

Parent Opinion Surveys

Please note that the Parent Opinion Surveys are due back to the office

tomorrow (Friday August 7th). Thank you to the families who have taken the

time to fill in the survey and provide feedback to ensure our school

continues to grow and meet the needs of our community.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the office on 9801

1900.

Earn and Learn with Woolworths

Please remember to collect your stickers to support the school to

continue to build our learning resources. It is beneficial to have

the stickers on a sticker sheet, however if you are unable to access one bring

you stickers along and place them in the box at the office.

‘Ye Olde Orchard Fair’

Although we are a few months away, the wheels

are certainly in motion. Thanks to Sally, Bridget

and their band of helper’s things are well and truly

prepared for another successful event. In the next

few weeks class teachers will be seeking your

support to act as Parent Rep for your class stall, fill

positions on the class roster and seek items for the

class hampers. The Parent Rep role requires you

to liaise with teachers and parents to ensure the success of your class stall,

seek support and supplies (if necessary) for your class stall and assist on the

day to ensure smooth operation of the stall. Please look for information to

come home in relation to these requests.

Welcome back Mr Mac!

We would like to extend a huge welcome back to Mr Mac! Many students

have noted his absence and look forward to hearing the wonderful stories he

will have to share while walking around on yard duty.

I wish to thank everyone that has supported the smooth transition to

commencing Term 3 and the support that has been offered to me throughout

the past 3 weeks as Acting Principal.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Keep Smiling

Kerri

Please note families with students in Grades Prep to Grade 4. Curriculum programs will need to be paid in full by the end of term 3 for your child’s attendance to the swimming program and end of year movie.

Level 5/6 writing program

In level 5/6 we have been exploring literary techniques to add imagery to our

writing. We have been learning about metaphors, similes, personification,

alliteration, hyperbole, ononmatapoeia and idioms. Below is an example of a

student’s writing piece that demonstrates many of these techniques. Can you

find the examples?

This piece of writing was written in a Big Write session with a narrative stimulus

that incorporated our Big Idea for this term, Survival.

At the bottom of the ocean lies a story untold….

Who was on the ship?

Where were they going?

What was the catastrophe that sunk the ship?

Were there any survivors?

Let the story unfold…..

I hope you enjoy the story.

Overboard written by Carla 5/6 C

Elliot tried to steady himself on the railing, but his efforts were in vain. The

waves roared and pushed him back down. He spluttered and gasped for air,

water flowing through his nose, making his throat burn.

His chest heaved in pain, his face wet with saltwater, rain and tears. He sobbed

and screamed, but he couldn’t hear himself over the whistling wind that made

his ears ache.

The waves crashed from all sides, rocking the boat like a mother with her baby’s

cradle. The wind came in a harsh, never-ending gust. The air and sea together

were tyrants, and the boat was its prisoner.

He pulled himself up again and crawled towards the mast, clinging on like it was

its lifeline. He struggled to grasp onto the slippery pole, but he managed.

Barrels and debris shot towards him like bullets, slashing at him like whips,

slicing his skin like knives. Blood rushed in his ears as the salt water gushed

down the wounds, blood and water flowing down like waterfalls.

His grip on the mast loosened and the wind-growing stronger and fiercer by the

second – pushed him back, his back hitting the wooden railings with a loud thud

and he swore he heard something snap.

Water flowed through in large, hard surges, stronger than before, clawing at

him, trying to convince him that his efforts were futile and to just jump, and that

no matter how much he prayed, the winds would throw him.

He gripped onto the railing, knuckles turning white, splinters digging into his

bleeding palms, blood staining the wood.

That’s when the railing broke.

He toppled over, but still managed to grip onto the ship – he would not die, he

told himself. Then again. Then again, until he knew it wasn’t true – but he would

not die this way!

But it was useless. His fingers were slippery from the blood and water.

He plunged deep into the ocean.

The breath was knocked straight out of his lungs, burning him on the inside, no

matter how cold the water was. The tyrants had won.

And, as his sight faded and the void took over, he slipped his burning eyes shut

and thought the same one line his crew mates had yelled over and over.

Man overboard.

Learning about

Capacity in Prep

B!

Last week in Prep B our busy little WASPS

were busy learning about Capacity.

Our heads were down, our brains were

focused and we were discovering a bucketful

of things!

We used water, rice, counters, blocks and

beads to determine the capacity of many

different containers and objects.

We also used some most important words

including: full, half full, half empty and

empty.

We had cupfuls of fun!
