Message from Winterton Improvement Network ChairYet again, we have a bumper issue for this magazine. Readers can judge for themselves how events in the township have brought together young and old. Hats off to all the brave people who have bungee jumped, walked in torrential rain and raised a lot of money for local groups. Life is not going to be any quieter though judging by all the planned activities in the coming months (1st Birthday celebration for Pavilion, coffee mornings, bazaars, free concert for over 60 and a whole week of events for the older generation).

Although it might sound a little early to talk about Christmas, we need to bring to all Winterton residents’ attention that Winterton Improvement Network will be encouraging householders to decorate their houses or gardens for the festive season. Our little elves will be walking around in the first week of December to take pictures so our mystery Santa can decide who is best!Nicki Mumby, Chair

COVER PHOTO: Winterton War Memorial was originally located at the top of Earlsgate. Costing £250 (approx £10,000), it was unveiled on a very wintry Sunday 12th December 1920 by ex-serviceman Mr C Hunt and 450 people attended. Highway alterations were carried out in 1967 and the memorial was moved to All Saints’ churchyard. The image is from a postcard dated 31st December 1920.

Editor’s comment2014 is certainly turning into a year to ‘Remember’. After nearly 94 years and through the democratic process - the very thing the 13 WW1 soldiers were fighting for - they will finally be remembered in the town. I would like to place on record my thanks to the town councillors who spent a great deal of time studying the evidence for each of the 13 soldiers. Town and Parish councillors are volunteers, and anyone who is not familiar with family history documents would have had a challenging task looking through the detailed evidence.Earlier this year, Lady Margaret Mason, who upon receiving an award along with her late husband Sir John at the Annual Town Meeting, described Winterton as “a small town with a very big heart”. The councillors’ decision certainly proves that point.

At the June meeting, councillors unanimously approved the addition of the following 12 WW1 soldiers names to the town’s war memorial:

Jack Parrott was born on 26th January 1884, Earlsgate, Winterton, and was the son of James and Sarah PARROTT. In 1891 and 1901 he was living with his parents in Earlsgate, Winterton, but by 1911 he had moved to 5 Lindley Street, Ashby.

Jack enlisted in Scunthorpe (residing in Thealby) and is listed on the 1914-15 Winterton Roll of Honour as being in the 5th Battalion, Lincolnshire

Regiment. He entered France on 1st March 1915, but was killed in action on 20th May 1915, aged 33 (see page 5), and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

His Medal Index Card shows that he was posthumously awarded the 1915 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Septimus Hare was born on 25th July 1879 in Winterton, and was the son of James & Elizabeth HARE. In 1881 Septimus and his parents were living in Park Street, Winterton and by 1891 he had moved to 9 Fosters Yard, Gainsborough. Septimus doesn’t appear in the 1901 census, but he reappears in 1911 at 5 Victoria Street, Gainsborough.

Septimus enlisted in Gainsborough. He

disembarked on 6th September 1914, but was killed in action at Armentières on 6th January 1916, aged 36 and is buried in Cité Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentières, France. The war diary for that particular day states “Bn in trenches. Trench 69 heavily bombarded. Casualties 1 killed, 9 wounded (one serious)”. His Medal Index Card shows that he was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

More names to be added to War Memorial (cont...)

James Emerson Proctor was born in Northamptonshire in 1894 and was the son of John Wattam & Lily PROCTOR. In 1901 he was living with his parents in Chapel Lane, Winterton, but by 1911 the family had moved to 102 Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe.

James enlisted in Grimsby and is listed on the 1914-15 Winterton Roll of Honour (qualified by upbringing) as being in the 5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.

He entered France on 1st March 1915, but was killed in action on 20th May 1915, aged 21 (see page 5), and is buried in Packhorse Farm Shrine Cemetery, Belgium. His Medal Index Card shows that he was posthumously awarded the 1915 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

James is shown standing in the photo, but in a further cruel twist of fate, his brother, Ernest Arthur Proctor (seated), who was also serving with the 5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, was killed on the same day and is buried in the same cemetery.

Thanks to reader Evelyn Harvey, WW2 soldier ‘S. Hall’, has been positively identified as Stanley Hall. Stanley, the son of Arthur and Annie Elizabeth Hall, was a signalman and served with the 50th Divisional Signals, Royal Corps of Signals. He died between the 1st-2nd June 1942, aged 24, and is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial in Egypt.n In order to have complete information for the war memorial booklet in All Saints’ Church, the identities for the following WW2 casualties need to be positively confirmed:• ‘J Bell’ - possibly John Frederick Spencer Bell from Burton upon Stather. Died July 1944, aged 27.• ‘S Crowston’ - possibly Arthur Stanley Crowston. Died March 1943, aged 26.

War memorial name identified

The parade will commence outside the Co-op at 1.30pm. Due to All Saints’ Church being closed this year for repairs and restoration work, the service will be held at Trinity Methodist Chapel at 2.30pm.At the time of going to press, it is unclear whether the laying of wreaths ceremony will take place in the churchyard due to contractors working in the vicinity of the war memorial. Please check our website www.winoaaiw.weebly.com for up-to-date information.

Remembrance Sunday

• ‘M Ellis’ - possibly Marjorie Ellis. Died July 1943, aged 16.If anyone has any information which can help, please contact Out ‘n About.

As the original WW1 panel on the war memorial is displayed in chronological order, our editor, Estelle listed the 13 additional names in the same manner and it quickly became evident that 20th May 1915 was a very dark day for Winterton.Jack Parrott, James Emerson Proctor and Charles William Stubbins, all serving with the 5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, were all killed in action on that dreadful day.A search of the History of the Lincolnshire Regiment 1914-1918 booklet, reveals the following details:“The records of the 1/5th Battalion are more detailed than those of the 1/4th; even so, there is little in them of more than ordinary interest. One item, however, does deserve mention. Those who went through the agonies of the trenches will know full well the nerve-wracking tension occasioned by the knowledge that the enemy was preparing a mine which might go up at any moment beneath the trench in which they stood. This experience fell to the lot of the 1/5th Lincolnshire (for the first time) on the 26th of April. Suspicions were

aroused on that date by muffled noises beneath the trench heard by the mining officer near Eil* and confirmed on the 28th by sounds of voices underground. But no further mention appears in the records until the 20th May when the inevitable result occurred: on that date at 3 p.m. the Germans blew the mine, killing eleven men and wounding twenty-two others of the 1/5th Lincolnshire, four men also

being “missing, believed killed.” One officer (Lieutenant Dyson), who had been buried for fourteen hours in the debris, was recovered at 5 a.m. on the 21st bruised, but sound and cheery. The next day suspicious noises were heard by

R.E. officers under Eil, as if a mining charge was being placed in position. On the 6th miners working in rear of Eil (which had been rebuilt since the explosion) discovered an enemy sap and heard the German sentry snoring. The Royal Engineers then placed a charge of 150lbs. ammonal and fired it, destroying the enemy’s gallery, but leaving our own intact. On the 15th of June, just before midnight, the 1/5th returned to bivouacs in Dranoutre.”*Refers to a trench called ‘E1 Left’, also known as ‘Hell’s Kitchen’.

20th May 1915 - a dark day for Winterton

Work continues on the Winterton WW1 survivors list by our editor Estelle. So far, 74 service personnel have been positively identified. At Winterton Show, the Open Gardens weekend, and the WW1 Commemoration event, many residents viewed the spreadsheets, as well as copies of the reports submitted to the town council regarding the 13 WW1 soldiers. Estelle would like to thank the Winterton and District Branch of the Royal British Legion for their practical support.Residents have also been jotting down ideas on how Winterton should say ‘thank you’ to those who returned from WW1 and later conflicts. Winterton Town Council supports Estelle’s vision of ‘something’ in whatever form it takes, being unveiled at the centenary of the Peace Celebrations in 2019. It is vital that all Winterton residents, young and old, have their say, so get your thinking caps on! It’s your golden opportunity to create a lasting legacy and honour those from the town who came back from war.You can add your ideas to the list by email: [email protected], or send them in an envelope marked “Winterton Remembers” to Cornerstone, 4 King Street, Winterton, DN15 9RN.

n The survivors list and 13 reports will be on display at the following events:Make A Difference Day - Saturday 25th October, Trinity Methodist Chapel. Remembrance Sunday - 9th November, Trinity Methodist Chapel. If you are organising a public event in the town and would like to have the display at your event, please contact Out ‘n About.

Disabled Club newsWhat a lovely summer we have had and a busy one for us Lions with the weather been very kind to us bringing lots of people to Winterton Show. We were very busy in the catering tent serving our homemade sandwiches and cakes. We took our catering van to the charity bungee jump organised by the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research charity (some of our members were brave enough to go into the cage briefly but I don’t think it actually left the ground (see photo - Lion President Don Johnson and Lions Ann and Bernard Tong) and also to the WW1 celebrations at the Pavilion.Every year we hold a Cancer Charity event in memory of Roy Hatton who was a founder member of Winterton and District Lions. This year we held a Fashion Show by Lincs Fashion at the Pavilion. This was very well supported and there will be some very well dressed ladies out there. All the clothes sold were from high street shops at a discount price. Funds raised are going to Macmillan Cancer Support for local lung cancer patients.LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL - WE SERVEWhenever a Lions Club gets together, problems get smaller and communities get better. That’s because we help where help is needed - in our own communities and around the world - with unmatched integrity and energy. And we care about every penny. We help local communities in a number of ways with every penny collected going directly to good causes. Not one penny is spent on administration. We focus on good deeds and help those who are less fortunate. These are a few of the good causes we have given to over the last few months. Donation to Burton Playgroup, sponsored two youngsters to play at the Edinburgh Festival, helped to pay for new boiler at Burton Village Hall. A lady asked for help with transport to a hospital appointment and then donated £10.00.We have sent a donation to the victims of the Balkans Flood Disaster - Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia are currently experiencing the worst floods since rainfall measurements began, 120 years ago and in a region that is slowly recovering from the ravages of Civil War. People do not have water, food, milk and essentials needed for babies and children. If you know of any local good causes that you think would benefit from our help please contact us on 0845 8337515.

On the beat with PC Amanda BarnettI was pleased to report at our local neighbourhood action team (NAT) recently that crime and anti social behaviour was down for the Burton & Winterton ward area. It was agreed at the meeting that one of our NAT priorities could be removed as we hadn’t received any calls for service. It’s always pleasing to see that in the grand scheme of things, Winterton is a pleasant place to live with very little crime being committed.

One area which does appear to be on the increase is theft of fish, sometimes referred to as poaching. Around our area we have a few places of open water and I’d like to bring to your attention the law on fishing in this country. To fish in any river or pond whether or not it is private, a rod licence is required. A constable can request any person who is fishing to see their licence and to state their name and address. If that person fails to do so, they are guilty of an offence. The person fishing also needs to have permission to fish in those waters. It is different to other theft offences in that the fish does not actually have to be caught or taken away for the offence to be committed. Therefore if someone is fishing with a baited hook in waters where there is a private right without permission then they commit the offence without catching a fish.

Humberside Police are working with neighbouring police forces to reduce this type of crime, so if you are a fisherman/woman please ensure you have a licence and the correct permissions.

Humberside Police are again at the forefront of social media in an attempt to keep the public updated on local issues. A new Facebook page called ‘North Lincolnshire Rural Neighbourhood Policing Teams’ is now available to ‘like’. You will receive updates of what’s happening in your village and it’s a good way to get ‘hot off the press news’ when you most need it. The page cannot be used to report crime. This should continue to be done by phoning 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Cindy and I will shortly be looking ahead to our regular ‘Panto’ season, which falls slightly behind the norm, with rehearsals starting in January and working towards our performance in March. With this in mind, we thought it a good idea to invite any budding young performers to join us for the preliminary stages, including casting.

We are a very informal bunch, providing an opportunity to go on stage, (or behind the scenes), no previous experience necessary. Rehearsals take place once or twice a week from January, with a few extra towards the actual performance, monies raised going to charity.

Anyone interested can join us at ‘Games Club’, 1st Wednesday of the month at Trinity Methodist Hall, King Street, 6.00pm – 7.30pm, or contact myself or Cindy for further details.

The recent BBC ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ programme showed legendary actor Brian Blessed visiting Winterton Cemetery to search for his great great grandfather Jabez Blessed. The programme didn’t really explain his links with Winterton, so our editor delved into the family history resources...The 1851-1871 census returns show Jabez living with his first wife Ellen in Brigg. He was declared insolvent in the 1860s and fell foul of the law in 1870 when he was fined 1s and 9s costs for obstructing the highway in Bigby with his wagon! He married his second wife Sabina Johnson (born in Winterton around 1826, daughter of Joseph and Rebekah Johnson (née Lawtey)) and in 1881 they were living in Low Street.Jabez died on 20th June 1890, aged 73, and was buried in Winterton Cemetery three days later. The All Saints’ Church burial register gives his residence as Winteringham Road. Sabina died on 6th November 1890 and was buried with Jabez two days later.

for their continued effort to make our community a better place.

We are continuing our distribution of Winter Survival Kits and would encourage residents over 60 who are vulnerable during the cold weather to get in touch so we can assist them. GP Out of Hours Service To access medical services when the surgery is closed Telephone 111 for medical advice.Flu and Shingles Vaccinations The 2014/15 Seasonal Flu Vaccination period will soon be upon us, clinics are estimated to commence at the end of September 2014. Notices will be displayed at the practice once the clinic dates have been set. Patients wishing to book for a vaccination should contact the surgery the week commencing 8th September 2014 when the clinics should be available for booking. The patients eligible for a flu vaccination this year are:• All patients aged 65 years and over (born on or before 31st

March 1950) • Patients in at risk groups (aged 6 months or older)

• Chronic Respiratory Disease • Chronic Heart Disease • Chronic Kidney Disease • Chronic Liver Disease • Chronic Neurological Disease • Diabetes • Immunosuppressed • Asplenia or dysfunction of the spleen

• Pregnant Women • People in Residential Homes • Carer’sThis year the seasonal influenza programme will be extended to include all children who attain the age of two, three and four years, but not yet five, on 1st September 2014. This is in order to lower the impact of influenza on children and lower influenza transmission to other children, adults and those in clinical risk groups at any age. The vaccine recommended is Fluenz and is administered as a nasal spray. This programme will be extended to include older children in future influenza campaigns. The programme will also be extended to include a vaccination against Shingles. Shingles is a common disease that can cause long- lasting, severe pain and has also been known to cause permanent disability. This disease occurs more frequently in those over 70 years of age. The vaccine is expected to reduce significantly the number of cases of shingles and will reduce the symptoms in vaccinated people if they still develop the disease. The vaccination will be offered to three age groups this year, those born between 2/9/1943- 1/9/1944 (aged 70) and those born between 2/9/1934- 1/9/1936 (aged 78 & 79). Mary Berry would be proud of Winterton’s budding bakers, Max [9] and Harry [7] Moody. They arranged a stall at their home in Northlands Road on 3rd August to sell cakes they had cooked themselves along with loom bands which they had weaved. Their mother, Terri, confirmed that it was all their own idea. She explained: “Keeping a commitment to play football meant they had missed a coffee morning held in aid of the church at their grandparents”. So these two enterprising brothers thought they should make their own effort to help by raising money for the repair and development project taking place at All Saints’ Church in Winterton. Their stall made a total of £36 which they handed over to the church. The photo shows Jean Key, churchwarden, thanking the two brothers for their superb effort. “They have set a fantastic example to other young people” she said. Behind them the church is swathed in scaffolding and sheeting ready for the new roof repairs and rainwater goods. At long last the capital works at the church have started after months of waiting. The time needed to obtain both the necessary permissions and the contractor tenders was far greater than expected. Unfortunately, the £1m planned budget, largely from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is no longer enough as prices have risen well beyond the budget expectation. So the church is actively fund-raising once again. More young people like Max and Harry are urgently needed!Information about the development project at All Saints, Winterton and ways you can help raise money for the project is on the website at http://lincoln.ourchurchweb.org.uk/winterton/ or contact 01724 734285.

Measuring and fitting service available. Order early for Christmas delivery.

The Air Cadets is a youth organisation for people aged 13-20. Our main aim is to provide activities that offer challenge, excitement and adventure and the knowledge you pick up along the way through structured lectures and first-hand experience. Some of the activities we offer are: Flying and Gliding, adventurous Training, Shooting, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, BTEC qualifications, sport, drill and ceremonial, music, and much much more…More specifically our squadron recently had the opportunity of going overseas to Mailly-Le-Camp, in the north-central part of France. Whilst there we attended many commemorative ceremonies in and around the area for the 70th anniversary of the Mailly-Le-Camp raids by the RAF and other commonwealth countries.

BackgroundOn the 3rd-4th May 1944 the RAF deployed 332 bomber aircraft from 28 squadrons all heading for Mailly-Le-Camp. Their main aim was to destroy the German 21st Panzer Division. On that night more than 300 airman failed to return of which 258 are believed to be killed in action. The Trip ItselfSome of the ceremonies we attended were, the main Mailly-Le-Camp commemoration parade at which 101 sqn RAF also attended with a Queens Colour and armed Colour Party. Following this we attended the official opening of an ECM Halifax memorial in the local area which was opened by French officials. This event was one of a kind and the opportunity to witness such an event that commemorates the brave young men and women who gave their today for our tomorrow. Following this we attended a service that

119 (Scunthorpe) Squadron Air Cadets

gave us the opportunity to test some of the French cuisine including snails, and a small celebratory drink. The next day we travelled to Ypres, Belgium to participate in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate; held every night, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The event consisted of the last post and laying of the wreaths followed by a march past. This was a great honour for us as a unit and as a representation of the Air Cadets, The United Kingdom and The Royal Air Force. The experience as a whole was extremely inspiring from the sights we saw to the people we met, it epitomises the Air Cadet Organisation as a whole. 119 (Scunthorpe) Squadron can offer YOU some excellent opportunities that can also help you in later life. The Squadron is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:15 at the minimal cost of £2.50 a week.Cadet Ryan Connor

Over the last year you will have seen and heard a lot about Healthy Lives, Healthy Futures a review of all health and care services throughout North and North East Lincolnshire. It is led by North Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and North East Clinical Commissioning Group, working in partnership with all our local health and care organisations. The aim is to make recommendations about how the CCGs can develop a health and social care system that will continue to deliver safe, high quality and affordable services for many years to come. The review launched in July 2013 with a three-month public engagement period, where both CCGs shared their reasons for change; the vision and the proposed programme process.A second phase took place between February and March 2014 giving the opportunity to communicate in more detail plans around the vision of self-care; delivering care closer to home and providing specialist hospital services.Since then two hospital services have been identified that need to change to improve safety and quality. A number of different ideas and options have been worked through to develop a proposal that the CCGs now want to talk to you about and hear what you think as part of a formal consultation process. These services are Hyper-Acute Stroke and Ear Nose and Throat Inpatient Surgery. There are four different options for each service that have been carefully reviewed and scored against each other to come to a preferred proposal. To read more about the options and proposals visit the website www.healthyliveshealthyfutures.nhs.uk or pick up a consultation brochure available in your GP Surgery, library, hospital and many more public facing buildings throughout North and North East Lincolnshire.

You can also come to a public event or roadshow taking place throughout North and North East Lincolnshire:Public EventsTuesday 9th September, 6.00pm – 8.00pm – Scunthorpe Civic CentreThursday 11th September, 6.00pm – 8.00pm – Immingham, Civic CentreRoadshows – North LincolnshireSaturday 6th September, 10.00am to 4.00pm – Scunthorpe, High StreetEveryone is welcome to come along. These changes cannot be made in isolation. The CCGs want to engage with staff, stakeholders and most importantly patients and the public to design services that meet your needs and continue to do so for future generations. To make sure what you want to say is captured please complete the questionnaire inside the consultation brochure or visit www.healthyliveshealthyfutures.nhs.uk to complete online. John Ablott, the Tower Clock Keeper for Winterton at All Saints’ Church retired on 29th May. He has held this post since 1988. Every week he has climbed up inside the tower of the church to wind the clock. Most people will have little idea of what this involves. Winding this clock is no mean feat. It involves raising two weights up a distance of nearly 11 metres. The smaller weight is about 152 kilograms and the large weight over 355 kilograms. Over the years the clock, clearly visible from the town centre, has shown the time and chimed out on the hour. John has also maintained the mechanism of the clock. The current tower clock, made in 1834 in Winterton, was a joint effort by local clockmaker, John Robinson, and machine-maker, Matthew Beacock. The 1834 clock mechanism still functions. Part of this mechanism is unique and is thus of great interest to horologists, having been visited by members of the British Horological Institute and the Antiquarian Horological Society.John’s horological experience and knowledge is extensive. He is a Member of the British Horological Institute and the Tower Clock Advisor for the Diocese of Lincoln. He has also been Tower Clock Keeper at Alkborough.Following John’s retirement, the clock at Winterton is in safe hands. Roger Moody and Richard Ball have taken over as Joint Tower Clock Keepers. They have been acting for many months as John’s assistants and John will still be on call if needed!

The event was well supported. It commenced with a parade headed by the North Lindsey pipe band from Market Square to The New Pavilion in Newport Drive for a drum head service conducted by padre Bill Pegg. Union flags were displayed by some of those watching the parade and approximately 150 citizens attended the service. There was a display in the Pavilion of the history of Winterton and surrounding area in the summer before the start of WW1. Estelle Mumby’s remarkable research into soldiers from Winterton who served in WW1 was displayed. Thirteen who died and are not on the war memorial will be added to the Memorial.A bar, tea and cakes and Morris dancing were also in the pavilion.Outside entertainments were Childrens’ sports, Punch and Judy, Coconut shy, Tug of War and beautiful singing of old songs by Jane Lancaster. The Winterton Lions kindly provided hot food and snacks.

They gathered to see the presentation of a cheque towards to project cost. The £2,000 cheque from The Co-operative Membership Community Fund will help towards the cost of the folding tables to be bought for use in the church for lunch clubs and community meals. The new kitchen to be built will enable the church to offer a new service by providing hot and cold meals for up to 120 people using the tables within the church.Daren Hale from the Humber Area Committee of the Co-op came to Winterton with the cheque and arranged for Andrew Lord to present it to Robin Shawyer, the church treasurer.

Church receives £2000 from the Co-op As there was no government directive or funding, the

decision to have a war memorial was taken at local level by a war memorial committee. That’s why there are various different styles in towns and villages up and down the country. Some chose not to have a war memorial, and in some areas e.g. Burton-upon-Stather, and Saxby All Saints, they are only now getting around to either installing or dedicating one. In the case of Barnetby Le Wold, names were not originally included - only a general description to those that died and the safe return of those that served. Names were added later. In 1919 and the early 1920’s a lot was going on at the time and making lists of men to include on memorials was not a high priority. This may well account for some of the names being omitted from memorials at the time. Research shows that nationally up to 35% of personnel were omitted from local memorials across the country, primarily due to the general chaos of the immediate post war years.

What an exciting time for us here at the Winterton and District Branch, we are thrilled to have hit the £50K milestone after our action packed summer of events. The milestone was reach on Sunday 10th August following a 10 mile sponsored walk which has raised over £2,400 in extremely wet conditions, but all of the walkers took on the challenge without a moan or complaint.

We had the pleasure of hosting our £50K Celebration Evening on Saturday 16th August at Winterton Rangers FC where we welcomed Chris Bunce the director of research for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research along with Emma Jane Jones our Regional Manager. Following speeches from within our branch and the wider community some of those who have supported our work including members of our fundraising team Rhiannon Sweeney, Jade Beard, Jacob Hammond, and Charlotte Kirton were rewarded with Princess Diana Awards, Lawrence Grant was awarded with the Lions District Governors awards, and Don Johnson, Winterton Community Academy, Nicky and Chris Hutson, and Hannah Dunkerley were all awarded with certificates of appreciation from Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research for their commitment to the cause. The evening was a fitting way to thank the community for all they have done to support our work over the last four years. Other events this summer that have helped to reach the milestone include our stall at Winterton Show which raised £682.84 with help from the Winterton Running Club who donated £1 for every entrant in the 10m road race! Our bungee jump at Winterton Community Pavilion which saw over forty brave jumpers take the leap of faith from the 175ft crane raising £3,000 and counting! Burton Primary School raised a further £220.21 with cake sales and a non uniform day, and members of our fundraising team got their hands dirty washing cars at the Butchers Arms Winterton to raise a further £186.60. Finally

We inspect the two local landfills, that’s the one at Winterton operated by FCC and the one at Roxby operated by Biffa. At Winterton landfill, the North site stopped taking waste in the first half of the year and all the existing waste there is fully covered over. The South site continues to receive waste. At Roxby landfill, no trains of waste from Manchester have been received since 20th June. This has reduced the waste input to the site by approximately 75%. Empty train containers that were being stored at Roxby have been returned for reuse in Manchester. Waste from local sources including North Lincolnshire domestic waste continues to arrive by road. We have continued with our inspection programme at both sites. Both landfills hold regular liaison meetings attended by us, the site operator and parish, town and North Lincolnshire councillors. If you are affected by environmental issues from either landfill, you can report these on our 24 hour a day, 7 day a week incident hotline, 0800 80 70 60.For information, the graph below shows the odour reports we’ve received since January 2013 in the Winterton town and Roxby village area. Based on the reported details, weather conditions and information from the landfill sites themselves, we have tried to identify the most likely source of the reported odour.

Please note that unless an authorised Environment Agency officer has been able to investigate the specific incident whilst odour was still present, this is only an indication of the most likely source.
