Delegates came from as far as South Africa, Colombia, Netherlands, and New Zealand (to name a few countries) for the conference held last 24 -26 October 2018 at the avorn Palm Beach Resort in Karon, Phuket. e conference was supported and sponsored by Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), Electricity Generating Authority of ailand (EGAT), PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP), Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), Banpu Infinergy and Phuket Solar Company Limited. e conference brought together energy professionals, researchers, members of the academia, policymakers, engineers and students. e conference was also technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES). On the first day of the conference, the former Minister of Energy of ailand, Dr. Piyasvasti Amranand, shared his insights about the future of ailand’s energy systems during this address entitled “ailand: Path towards 1.5’C”. On the second day, Dr. Venkatachalam Anbumozhi, a senior energy economist of the Economic Research institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and an alumnus of AIT discussed the “Challenges and Opportunities for Green ASEAN Grid System”. Field trips were also arranged for conference delegates, to see a solar PV installation site of Phuket Solar Co. Ltd. at the HeadStart International School; and a scenic wind turbine installation site operated and managed by EGAT in Phromthep Cape. Read more... He contested the election from Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa, a political party in Bhutan that won the majority of seats in the recent EEM Alumni Appointed Agriculture Minister in Bhutan parliamentary election to form government. He graduated from AIT with a Masters of Science in Environmental Engineering and Management in 2007. Prior to joining politics, he was the Project Director of Green Public Procurement Project and Climate Change Policy Advisor with UNDP Bhutan and National Environment Commission.

ICUE 2018 on Green Energy for Sustainable Development24-26 October 2018, Thavorn Palm Beach Resort, Karon, PhuketGreen Energy towards sustainable development has been the topic of the ICUE 2018, an international conference organized by the Energy Program of the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Incorporating elements of renewable energy, low carbon strategies into economic, technological and social progress were the highlights of the conference.

The flagship biannual conference of the EECC Department’s Energy Program saw the participation of 150 delegates from 34 countries. Delegates came from as far as South Africa, Colombia,

Netherlands, and New Zealand (to name a few countries) for the conference held last 24 -26 October 2018 at the Thavorn Palm Beach Resort in Karon, Phuket.

The conference was supported and sponsored by Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP), Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), Banpu Infinergy and Phuket Solar Company Limited. The conference brought together energy professionals, researchers, members of the academia, policymakers, engineers and students. The conference was also technically

co-sponsored by the IEEE Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES).

The third EECC Seminar entitled “Energy Transition or Energy Trilemma? “ was delivered by Dr. Thomas Brudermann on 31 October 2018 at S101, SERD Meeting room, AIT.

Dr. Mohanty, visiting faculty at the EECC Department, AIT presented a paper on “Auroville: 50 Years Experiment in a Net Zero Society in a Tropical Climate” at the conference on Towards Net Zero Energy Buildings held in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Prof. Visu from EECC Department made a keynote presentation at the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) World Congress 2018 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 22 - 24 October, 2018.

1200 participants from more than 60 countries participated in this event. The theme of the conference this year was Sustainable Consumption towards Waste Minimization. Most of the presentations were

Dr. Tsuda is a specially-appointed Associate Professor in Osaka University and has established an interdisciplinary expertise across biology (microbiology and biochemistry) and engineering (bio-monitoring, 3D printing).

Throughout his research career, he has been developing automated systems for online monitoring of biological activities.

Doctoral Seminar by Mr. Ta Hung Anh11 October 2018, S101, SERD Meeting RoomMr. Ta Hung Anh, a Doctoral student in the Environmental Engineering and Management Program, EECC Department, delivered a Doctoral Seminar entitled “Development of Novel Biofilm Photobioreactor for Treatment of Nutrients and Pathogens in Septic Tank Effluent” on Thursday, 11

October 2018.

His research interest includes: Sanitation, Faecal Sludge Management and Business model innovation.

He is currently working under the supervision of Prof. Thammarat Koottatep.

A day-long conference was jointly organised by Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC), Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM), Construction Industry Development Board (CIBD) Malaysia, and partners. Read more…

Prof. Visu, was invited as one of the keynote Speaker for the session 2 on the 22 October, where he presented on the Technology Innovation in Waste Management segment a lecture on “Revolution in Waste Management Sector by Internet of Things and Industry 4.0”.

To supplement the classroom lessons and to provide clearer practical understanding and application of the energy technologies, Energy Resources and Technologies, the program annually arranges a field trip to industries across the Northern Thailand.

Dr. P. Abdul Salam, the course instructor, led the trip with assistance of Dr. Vu Duc Hien, Senior Laboratory Supervisor and Ms. Phornsinee Thanara, Administrative Secretary. The 5 days field trip covered nine energy establishments including seven power plants, one coal mine, and an oilfield.

GeoTraining Environmental and Remote Sensing Data Analysis via Geospatial Technologies in Research and Teaching2 - 28 September 2018, Goethe-University Frankfurt, GermanyMs. Truong Thi Huyen, M.Eng. candidate, Environmental Engineering and Management Program, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change attended the 4-week summer school: GeoTraining Environmental and Remote Sensing Data Analysis via Geospatial

Technologies in Research and Teaching, Department of Human Geography, Goethe-University Frankfurt, Germany during 2 - 28 September 2018.

Under the coordination of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Goethe-University Frankfurt, the Philipps-Universität of Marburg and the Universität Koblenz-Landau organised the GeoTraining summer school. It was designed as a 4-week training programme which aims to prepare university students and junior researchers for the tasks of teaching and research in

their respective institutions.

The course focuses on geospatial research methods, research project development and higher education teaching skills. 30 selected participants came from 18 different countries from

Africa, Asia and Latin America.The program was sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) along with co-funding from the involved institutions. Read more...

EECC Department visited Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus9 October 2018, ThailandThe Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change visited Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen Campus on Tuesday 9 October 2018. The team was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jai. G. Singh and Assist. Prof. Dr. Wenchao Xue.

EEM Laboratory Training Session for EEM’s Research Students2 October 2018, Thailand

Asst.Prof. Kittipong Jaojaruek, an Energy Alumnus from AIT, coordinated with the visit. 32 students from the Mechanical Engineering Department signed up for the event. The team made a presentation, introducing AIT and EECC Department’s programs to the attendees. The prospective were walked through

the application process, briefed on the eligibility requirements and deadlines. They were presented with the opportunity to explore the range of scholarships and fellowships offered at AIT.

The team also shared the campus stories and learning experiences at AIT in a multicultural setting to the prospective students. Dr. Kittipong takes his students on a journey through his life, recounting his memories at AIT working on his research and meeting people from all over the world. Dr. Kittipong graduated from AIT with a Doctor of

Engineering in Energy in 2011. He currently lectures at the Kasetsart University.

Students who raised questions were presented with souvenirs and encouraged to participate in the interaction. For the students who cast doubt over their English language skills, the team explained that AIT has a language center that is especially dedicated to students whose English needs improvement. And students can enroll for the series of English language courses offered by the language center at their own pace.
