I am sure you would like to stay home a little longer, but the semes-ter starts and you, as well as we have to be back to our posts; you as students and we as instructors. The past month and a half has been kind of hard for all of you; you were studying hard for the examinations and you were writing as-signments for the requirements of your studies. Well the spring semester has started yesterday and whether we like it or not we have to work hard to make it yield results. The spring is already knocking at our door and the weather will start getting nicer and nicer and we will all be looking forward to the summer. Warm weather, longer days and studying are three things that need to be matched perfectly, otherwise we will al have to suffer negative consequences. Still, though, you must all push yourselves to the limit and try everything possible to make this coming semester the most successful out of all the semesters of your studies here at CITY college so far. Plan ahead, manage your time accordingly and try to focus on what you know to do best... and I am not referring to partying, karaoky-ing, and socialising, of course. Along with the new subjects you will be exposed to during this se-mester, we have prepared for you interesting extracurricular activi-ties, such as business seminars, company visits, guest lecturers, and competitions, in an attempt to enrich your experience here, at CITY College. Soon, June will come and we must all need to be prepared to face the exam period and the heavy studying that it entails. Stay on truck, do what you are required to do and if you pace yourselves right I am sure there is plenty of time for other extracurricular activi-ties, which I know you are all so much into. For final years students, this is your last chance to prove how much you are worth and how much of this value you can present to us. The graduation party is just round the corner. Follow the three Ss: Study, Sleep, and Stay alert. If you do that, there is going to be plenty of time for you to embark on the other Ss (Sun, Sea, Sand, et cetera) in the summer. Good luck to all of us.

Mr. Christos Liassidis Academic Director of Postgraduate Studies

Successful Business Seminars by

Mr. Liassidis in Sofia and Tirana

Mr. Chris Liassides, Senior Lecturer and Academic Director of Post-graduate Studies, BAED, shared his knowledge and expertise through his seminars titled “Understanding Customers by Studying Lifestyle”, successfully delivered in Sofia and Tirana in February 2011. With more than 250 participants each, the seminars drew a full house. In his lively presentation, Mr. Liassides explained how the study of consumers’ lifestyle helps firms and organizations improve their marketing strategies and activities and provide them with new ideas in creating products and services. Consumers think, feel, reason, and select between different alterna-tives based on changes taking place in their lifestyle. With his pres-entation, Mr. Liassides provided an overview of modern lifestyle and how the study of lifestyle aspects and dimensions can initiate mana-gerial and entrepreneurial activity. All participants enjoyed the seminar as well as Mr. Liassides’ excel-lent presentation skills.

5 February - World Cancer Gala

On 5 February, the inaugural World Cancer Gala took place in Geneva, Switzer-land, as an important fundraising event for the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). The theme of the World Cancer Gala 2011 was “Fiesta Fla-menca”, featuring top entertainment and exquisite dining. Many high profile guests attended. All funds raised went directly to three priority programmes that will ultimately help to reduce the cancer burden, namely:

• Putting Cancer on the Global Health Agenda of 2011 together with the World Health Organisation to lead a campaign that is pressing for appropriate commitments from governments;

• Treat the Pain: programme to address an urgent and real need. Initially, UICC will focus on a small number of target countries where coordinated actions will make a measurable and tangible impact; and

• Maximising World Cancer Day to raise awareness on a global scale.

Dr. Psychogios Contributes to New Book

Dr. Psychogios, Senior Lecturer, BAED, has been in charge of the Greek translation of the 11th edition of R. Wayne Mondy’s book, titled “Human Resource Management”. We would like to congratulate him for an excel-lent work.

Interview with Alexandros Melis, MA in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations

FEBRUARY 2011—ISSUE 19

Q: How was the examination period for you? A: These were my first exams at CITY College so I was pretty stressed. The revision week helped me a lot though. After all, it was not so hard, but you should bet-ter ask me again after the announcement of the results. Q: What have you been doing during the two weeks of holidays following the exams? A: I have had some rest (at last). I visited my family in Athens and I am currently reading some articles, pre-paring for my dissertation. Holidays are always short… never enough. Q: What did you like the most during the first se-mester (lectures, company visits, seminars, parties, etc)? A: I mostly enjoyed the company visits. I believe that it is very useful for students to see how practitioners work… to see them in action. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time for parties… Q: Please describe CITY College and let us have your opinion about it. What does CITY college mean to you? A: Having my Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engi-neering, a Master’s Degree in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations seemed like the perfect next step for me, enabling me to diversify. I really wanted to com-bine Business, Marketing and Engineering, and CITY College has given me a great opportunity to do this.

Q: What do you think of stu-dent life at CITY and in Thes-saloniki? A: The several clubs and extra-curricular activities taking place at CITY College really provide students with an overall great experience and many possibilities. Thessaloniki's student life, on the other hand, is pretty amazing in general but you have to know where to go and what to do. Asking older stu-dents always helps! Q: What do you dislike most at CITY College and you think it should change? A: I would love to be offered more company visits and, why not, an educational trip to another country. Q: How has been your life in Thessaloniki? What are you doing at your spare time? A: Life is great if you are a student in Thessaloniki. I usually go out with friends or walk by the seaside. I live in the city centre so it is very easy to go everywhere on foot, and this is what I enjoy the most in Thessaloniki. Q: This will be the final semester of your studies. What are your plans after graduation? A: I have got many plans after graduation. I would like to travel to several places across the world such as South America. Concerning my career, I would love to find an interesting job in marketing somewhere in Europe.
