Higher education in 21st century is becoming more competitive than ever before. Today, administration in a University of a College is not limited to maintaining staff and student records.Efficient administration and knowledge management have become a major part of running 21st

century institutions. Manually managing a college or university is an overwhelming process is not

always error proof.

Education is an investment, and it is one expense parents and students are prepared to pay if itmeans a more comfortable life. Many parents save for their children’s education over many years, even if they save for no other reason. With students paying more for education, they areexpecting better value and more flexible options. Now – a – days people complete higher education at different stages of their life, not just when they finish school. More people than ever before are studying at a higher education institute – mainly because a diploma or degree is seenas a prerequisite for most careers. Over the last 20 years, the role of higher education has alsoevolved from providing academic courses for a small percentage of people, to providing industry

–specific courses for a majority of people.

To meet these challenges and remain competitive IEC Group of Institutions is in the process are

seeking additional revenue streams, introducing innovative learning opportunities, and redefiningthe very role of the higher education institute. Higher Education institutions have begun to lookbeyond legacy systems with their inherent outdated technology and disparate un-integratedsystems for a future – focused solution that is flexible and adaptive to changing requirements. With computers now an integral part of the society, up-to-date PCs and campus managementsoftware are a non-negotiable part of every institution’s learning arsenal.

IEC Group is working on the introducing on e-learning process as an affordable solution that letshigher education institutions  compete in a continually changing environment. It is a true web-based solution, so system administrators don’t need to install software on every user’s PC or Mac. The easy –to-use interface providers efficient access to student records and other usefulinformation from any network-connected workstation within the college premises or from webbrowser anytime, any-where. It is secure hosting facility over the Internet. This service includes

backups, restores and 24x7x365 monitoring. However, an institution can choose to host thesolution inside their premises, if they already have the servers and network infrastructure.

This e-learning solution, Executive Dashboard displays a set of key performance indicators (KPIs)directly to the executive’s desktop. Executive Dashboard acts as an early-warning system byallowing executive to actively monitor and drill into questions and issues demanding further investigation. It will allow us as an institution to build a roadmap for integrating other systems.

The individuals who need to to work can continue do so and yet at the same time, obtain anonline education. They can get online and do their courses work whenever they are able to sparesome time. To get ahead and quality education, sparing a few hours each evening and on theweekends is not much to ask for, especially when it places you on the fast track to a new career with better pay.

Online education may also be the perfect choice for you if you don't live in a metropolitan area. Inthe past, students would have had to move to a city that housed a college or university. “This was

just about impossible if your spouse had a great job and your kids were still in school.Unfortunately in these situations, the education had to be put on hold. This is no longer true asyou can log on and work toward that degree without even leaving your house - beauty of technology, “ says the groovy, Mr. Naveen Gupta, CEO, IEC Group of Institutions.

• No need to spare all employees at the same time. The employee can choose time andplace of learning.

• It will be self paced and if need be can be run again and again till employee is confidentlywell versed in the subject.

• No time constraints. Learning can be in bite sized chunks or all at once-totally as per thelearner's need-rather than the instructor's comfort.

• Large number of courses can be managed through suitable LMS (Learning ManagementSystems) by a very small number of training administrators. The LMS can also documentand log number of courses taken, test scores, time taken, etc for each learner which canprovide intelligent data for developing your employee's skills.

• It results in measurable learning. Due to score tracking, progress tracking and timetracking, the performance of each employee undergoing the training becomesmeasurable. In earlier days with traditional training, this was typically not done.

• Flexible course deployment---either through stand alone CD ROMs, Internet or acompany wide Intranet. Hence no travel and stay expenses, which can be a substantialcost today.

A TAKE ON e-learning Trends for the Future by Naveen Gupta, CEO, IEC Group of Institutions

The e-learning market has managed to zap onlookers over the years by springing up new

technological advances, and as a consequence, enhanced features of e-learning, every now andthen. As there have been rapid leapfrogs in the information technology sector off late, e-learninghas evolved tremendously in meaning, with new features rapidly emerging on the e-learninghorizon.

E-learning will stimulate skill enhancement for IEC Students

With job profiles being modified with alacrity, skill advancement cannot be escaped. For organizations, waiting for educational institutions to churn out deserving candidates is obviously atime consuming proposition. Here, e-learning comes to aid by providing constant updation for employees so that they remain competitive with on-the-job training. This brings in additionalbenefits for IEC technocrats and budding managerial professionals.

Organizations other than corporates will embrace e-learning

Corporations trying to increase the value of their employee-training comprised of the earlypatrons of e-learning. But, fortunately, this has given way to an encouraging trend of governmentagencies, educational institutions, and NGOs waking up to the benefits of e-learning. Developingcountries can heavily rely upon e-learning to infuse learning among workers, thus increasing their productivity. It can also compensate for the dearth of qualified and skilled teachers indemography. Schools and colleges wanting to retain talent can introduce specialized programsfrom other institutions.

Application service providers will rule

For first time e-learning users, or companies that are interested in concentrating on their core

competencies, application service providers are the best bet. These can either be vendors or anythird party that manage the whole e-learning process for your organization. Implementing e-learning platforms on third party servers no only saves on the precious time of time-starvedorganizations, but also benefit on the price front because of the additional research anddevelopment by the application service provider. Moreover, the organizations can either lease thee-learning platforms or purchase them according to convenience. This is particularly helpful for organizations that want to test the waters before taking the plunge.

E-learning will rule mergers and acquisitions

With a plethora of collaborations, mergers and acquisitions taking place day in and day out, it isnecessary that the workforce of the collaborating companies be oriented towards the workingpatterns of the new partner. Team members of collaborating companies can use the e-learning

platform to understand shared objectives. Learning of new technologies and techniques becomesless tedious in the wake of e-learning.

Wireless technology will bring a breakthrough in e-learning

Unlike a few days ago, professionals need not travel to urban hubs to attend conferences andseminars or to gain insight into new research. Wireless technology will allow content to reach todistant areas of the world. Two way information transfers with technologies such as radio, satelliteand Wi-Fi signals are now the reality of the day, and this is groundbreaking, to say the least.

E-learning will be integrated with infrastructure

With either departmental or company wide intranets becoming the order of the day, e-learningdeployment through them has become easier. Easy integration of learning modules into staff communications is possible, thus encouraging employees to learn. The content, being in chunks,is also easily digestible.

It will even out the disparity between small and large businesses

The exchange of information between rural experts and urban communities and vice versa ispossible because of e-learning. Niche industries will tremendously gain because of thisdevelopment. High level information is now not the prerogative only of blue chip companies withe-learning making it available to smaller businesses for free.

Including games in the courseware will be common in IEC

Quizzes, treasure hunts or other fun programs can ingrain new ideas into learners and complywith the ‘learn and have fun’ model of learning. Simulations through games are gaining popularitybe the day, with students conceding to learning through experience being the most effective wayto learn. For example, Training industrial employees for risk prone tasks, yet eliminating hazardsfrom the training is possible with interactive gaming.

E-learning in India as envisioned by IEC.

INDIA IS embracing e-learning in a big way. India has learned lessons from the success of the e-way in the West and today the grim educational picture is being replaced by e-governance’s-

classroom, e-tutorials. It is a matter of pride for the country in general and agencies in particular for the popularization of the mission mode programmes on e-governance.

The major  advantage of e-learning is that it is self-paced and learning is done at the learner’space. The content can be repeated until the trainee understands it. E learning is interactive too. With the growth of e-learning, more and more pupils will opt for it, as there would be no worry thatthe maths teacher will beat them for a sum gone wrong. Also, there will also be no fear of cominglate to class and then standing outside the classroom waiting for permission to enter.

More and more working professionals would be interested in learning the e-way because of flexibility that e-learning offer. E-learning will soon become a great tool to enhance qualificationsand getting promotions in the job market. So, to sum up, the future of e-learning is bright.

However, there is significant knowledge retention. High quality e-learning solutions are beingdeveloped in India with the right technology and industry support in sectors as distinct as steel,IT, automobiles, cement and telecom. Industry watchers estimate that because of its advantages,India is bound to grow in stature as the hub for e-learning programmes.

Interestingly, many companies are booming up here in India for providing e-classes. Places likeMumbai and Bangalore are becoming prominent centres for providing e-tutorials. It's booming butthe big question is what is the future of e-learning? Everyone be it educators, parents or studentshas this question in mind but no one is able to answer. To check it out, its imperative to look tothe trends concerned with e-learning, which are already taking control in our world.

It seems imperative that e-learning would coexist with other technologies and ways of acquiringknowledge. And as soon as low cost PCs would be made available and broadband will penetratedeeper, particularly in rural areas, there are chances that e-learning will strengthen.

Significant infrastructure has been set up for production of video-based teaching material by theIndian Institutes of Technology (IIT), the Bangalore based Indian Institutes of Sciences (IISc) andTechnical Teacher Training Institutes (TTTI.) Gyan Darshan, which was launched on January 26,2000, as an exclusive higher education TV channel to provide quality distance education byIGNOU, can be considered as an effective effort in India.

At the institutional level many institutes, mainly private as of now, have entered into onlinedistance education and the much talked about NIIT Varsity offers training to 500,000students annually across 33 countries. One of the world's leading management schools, the Indian Institute of Management at Calcutta (IIM-C), amongst others, entered into astrategic alliance with NIIT, to offer executive development programmes through virtualclassrooms.

Researchers, academics, teachers, and students worldwide are excitedly embracing blogs(web logs.) Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu, a state in South India played host to abloggers' conference held at the TIDEL Park. CDAC and IGNOU are two of India's mostesteemed organizations in their respective fields, which have held conferences in the fieldof e-learning every year.

It is very difficult for a person of my stature to issue a declaration on the issue but Isuggest that higher educational institutions in India, which plan to venture into e-learningshould take a lesson from this and must first follow the education and communicationstrategy of organizational change where the stakeholders should be informed as to howthe change will affect them.

ConclusionAll in all, the ever evolving e-learning has not yet abandoned the process, and will well continueto develop into a sophisticated and futuristic learning platform in congruence with the rapidadvances in technology and learning standards.
