__ November 2016 __ A VIEW FROM THE PULPIT On a Sunday in 1904, Civilla Martin was in Lestershire, New York, where her husband Walter was compiling a collection of hymns for the Practical Bible Training School. They were planning to travel to another town that day, for Martin had a preaching assignment. Civilla woke up sick, and Martin was about to cancel his plans, when their young daughter piped up and said. “Oh Daddy you don’t have to stay home because of Mamma God will take care of us.” Martin proceeded to the train station and fulfilled his appointment. When he returned Civilla handed him the words of “God Will Take Care of You,” which she had written in his absence. Going to his organ, Martin composed the music, and it was first published in the song book he was compiling for the school. A favorite song of mine is “Till the Storm Passes By” tells of God taking care of us in the middle of life’s storms. The first verse and chorus are as follows: In the dark of the midnight I have often hid my face While the storm howls above me, and there’s no hiding place. ‘Mid the crash of the thunder, precious Lord hear my cry Keep me safe till the storm passes by. Till the storm passes over, till the thunder sounds no more Till the clouds roll forever from the sky. Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of thy hand Keep me safe till the storm passes by. And He does “God Will Take Care of You.” As the Hurricane neared Fred’s home in Florida his place was spared a lot of damage just some shingles off the roof and part of a fence blown over. As he reflected on God’s protection this time his mind went back to another Storm- over- the water encounter he’d had years ago. Fred and his wife and two boys were house boating on the Mississippi River. About the middle of the afternoon Fred sensed that a storm was brewing and headed for port. The Mississippi is pretty big at that point and they had several miles to travel to safety. Anxiously, Fred pushed the throttle to the max hoping to outrun trouble, but every minute the sky drew darker and wind stronger. Their flat-bottomed houseboat pitched up and down like a cork. By the time a marina came into view, rain was coming down so ferociously that he could hardly see. Finally they neared shore but a gust of wind suddenly threw them forward and they came within a hair of ramming the dock. Somehow Fred got the boat straightened in the nick of time and close enough for his boys to tie them up. Inside, dry and secure, Fred breathed a sigh of relief and a silent prayer of gratitude. Afterward, Fred told a veteran boater, who had ridden out the storm mid-river about his near collision with the dock. “The safest place in weather like that is on the water,” he explained. “All you need to do is drop anchor, point the bow in the direction of the wind and trust your boat.” Fred thought of that advice often when other kinds of storms buffeted his life. Sometimes we all try to outrun them or battle them alone without success. But when we trust our heavenly Anchor we’l l find that He’ll hold us fast, in the hollow of His hand and keep us safe till the storm passes by. Indeed “God Will Take Care of You.” Rev. __ November 2016 __ A VIEW FROM THE PULPIT

On a Sunday in 1904, Civilla Martin was in Lestershire, New York, where her husband Walter was compiling a collection of hymns for the Practical Bible Training School. They were planning to travel to another town that day, for Martin had a preaching assignment. Civilla woke up sick, and Martin was about to cancel his plans, when their young daughter piped up and said. “Oh Daddy you don’t have to stay home because of Mamma – God will take care of us.”

Martin proceeded to the train station and fulfilled his appointment.

The first verse and chorus are as follows:

In the dark of the midnight I have often hid my face While the storm howls above me, and there’s no hiding place.

And He does “God Will Take Care of You.”

As the Hurricane neared Fred’s home in Florida his place was spared a lot of damage just

some shingles off the roof and part of a fence blown over.

But when we trust our heavenly Anchor we’ll find that He’ll hold us fast, in the hollow of His hand and keep us safe till the storm passes by. Indeed “God Will Take Care of You.”

Thank you to all who contributed to make our Fall Bazaar such a huge success! What a wonderful morning of fun and fellowship. A little over $7, 800 was made, which will be used by Presbyterian Women for a variety of ministries. This has been our most successful fundraiser to date. Our annual church Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on November 20th, at 6:00 p.m. The Presbyterian Women will provide turkey, ham, and dressing. Please bring a side dish and a dessert and join us at this special gathering. The THANK Offering will be taken up at this time. This offering has long been a tradition of the Presbyterian Women. THANK Offering supports projects related to health, education, economic development, and needs of women and children.

WEAVES THE AUTUMN SCENE

Autumn’s woven once again Colors bright and bold,

High upon the mountaintop Valleys just below.

Seems there’s loveliness to see Everywhere I look,

Like an artist paints the scene In a picture book.

Colors chosen for each trees Crimson beauty bold,

Followed by the artist’s brush Dipped in purest gold.

Still a vision to behold Hints the color green,

Rarest loveliness of earth Weaves the Autumn scene.

LIVING TREASURES

I have sunlight on my shoulders with bright blue skies ahead,

And bluebirds sang a song for me while I was still in bed.

There’s a hint of spice and cinnamon brought by the morning breeze,

And there’s a touch of red and gold appearing in the trees.

Days are growing shorter now and nights can bring a chill.

The squirrels are hiding acorns in the woods beside the mill. Mom’s making apple cider

and filling mason jars. September nights have been so clear

you can see a million stars!

It’s harvest time upon the earth, a time for giving thanks,

For these, the living treasures, we never find in banks.

God showers us with blessings sometimes great, sometimes small… And for these, the living treasures,

we praise Him for them all!
