Additional Functionality - Middlebury experience
• pilots (especially 1 semester) do not
incentivize faculty to revise courses to takeadvantage of added functionality
• added functionality = added work for faculty to
use; and if they don’t push it, students won’t
either
• high barrier to create worthwhile functionality
that faculty will invest time in
• everyone is focused on costs; if publishers are
eyeing “added functionality” primarily as a way
to justify higher prices, could (temporarily, at
least) derail the movement towards eTexts.
Just sayin’….

“Dear Middlebury”: Advice for the
eTextbook lovelorn…
scale pilot appropriately – make it worthwhile, but not too muchto handle
how will you pay? – easiest for us to just use LIS budget
plan for assessment from the beginning – if possible, get
assessment commitments from faculty up front, perhaps as a
condition of participating involve the bookstore (regardless of what anyone says) – think
about bookstore contracts with outside vendors
involve Institutional Research/Assessment - especially if you
need their permission to gather data, send out surveys, etc.
talk to faculty as early as possible. Find faculty who aren’tafraid of technology.
keep talking. Check in. Tell faculty about the added features,
even if they aren’t interested (if only to confirm this!)
