E-Waste

E-waste has been defined as “waste

electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part or rejects from their

manufacturing and repair process, which

are intended to be discarded”.

Where is the E-waste coming

from?

• High consumption and production patterns

• High rate of obsolescence

Use and throw society instead of use and repair

• E-waste generation estimates

India generates around 8 lakh metric tonnes of e-waste annually.

Bangalore alone generates 18000 metric tonnes of e-waste anually.

• Imports

Mislabeled as charity, donations and used products illegally brought intothe country ~ 50,000 metric tonnes

E-waste Issues

• E-waste is hazardous but also VALUABLE due to presence of

metals like copper, gold, platinum etc. but it is being recycled in a

crude manner by the informal sector .

• GTZ-MAIT study predicts 90% e-waste recycling is undertaken by

the informal sector in India.

• Crude rudimentary processes by informal sector leads to

environmental pollution and occupational health and safety hazards

and low efficiency of extraction.

• If disposed improperly, e-Waste equipments pose a serious threat

to human health and environment

Eco Conservation and

e-waste

Electronics are made from valuable resources, such as precious

metals, copper, and engineered plastics, all of which require

considerable energy to process and manufacture.

Recycling electronics recovers valuable materials and as a result, we

reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce pollution, save energy, and

save resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.
