EAA Chapters In Action With cold weather about to set in for the next few months, chapters will be moving their activities in- doors. Winter festivities are coming up. They will center on films, speak- ers, and getting some work done on that airplane. There will be some mighty fine welding weather. Ot course, if you're fortunate to live in year-round seasonable weather, you've nothing to worry about. During the summer months, chap- ter activities were really booming. There seemed to be no limit on pro- ducing varied and interesting pro- grams for their respective chapter members. Reviewing the last couple of months' newsletters certainly proved this. The following are just a few of the many programs, fly-ins and social activities that were held: DETROIT, MICHIGAN CHAPTER 13 Aldo Chiaverotti 8956 Mystic Lane Warren, Mich. 48093 Guest speaker at a recent meeting was Bill Barber who talked on his experiences as an aerobatic pilot. Though a captain with North Cen- tral Airlines, he does air show work with his "Clipped Wing Cub," and by Pauline Kiel, EAA 8619 "Bucker Jungmann." He is a former duster pilot and the proud owner of a "Curtiss Falcon." On Sunday, August 20, 1967, the chapter held their fly-in at McKinley Airport. Those in attendance were: Allan Kass "Playboy", Charles Goodrich—"Cougar", Fred Trella "Trella Special", Joe Benich and Nick Seraphinoff "Water Sport SBS2", Vie Martin "Tiger Moth", Don Vincent—"Ercoupe", Jim Gra- ham—"Midget Mustang." Those who flew in from surrounding areas were: Don Farmer of Fraser—"Baby Ace SB 1", Charles Sanford of East De- troit—"Fly Baby", and Walter Kay of Madison Heights—"Midget Mus- tang." During the afternoon the Michigan Council, sponsors of the Continental engine, held a drawing. The lucky winner was John Kolbasa of Vassar, Mich., a member of Chap- ter 177. After a meal of barbecued chicken, served by the Zion United Church of Churches, visitors could ride in "The Old Tin Goose" and two helicopters. Vintage cars, which were on display, were used to give rides to the chil- dren. All in all, it was a wonderful, eventful day. A new feature in the monthly newsletter, "Dope Sheet," is the "Plane Portraits" by Bob Pauley. Each month he will present a plane built by one of the chapter members, to give some ideas as to the perform- ance of the plane, the cost and length of time required to build it. Included in the article is a short biography of the builder to acquaint the other members with him and stimulate in- terest in building their own plane. EASTERN NEBRASKA CHAPTER 80 Bill Durand 84th and McKinley Omaha, Nebraska Being an active and interesting chapter is often difficult to achieve, but it doesn't seem to create any problems for this fine chapter, and the past few meeting programs prove this. EAA Chapters In Action

To acquaint the members with themethods of riveting, a riveting exer-cise session was held. At the samemeeting, Mr. Harold P. Chadderdon,principal maintenance inspector, Fed-eral Aviation Agency, was present.Chapter designees are planning toget together with him to discuss thedesignee program.

Due to the efforts of Bill McNa-mara, program director, the 1966Rockford Convention film was pre-sented on Channel 6 TV on August26.

No chapter program is completewithout a little social festivity. Howabout a watermelon feed? It wastheir first one but surely not theirlast. Flying in from Norfolk, wasClarence Brueggerman in his "FlyBaby" and John Simpson in his"Tempete." Omaha fly-ins were Har-ry Dirgo's 1934 Fairchild 24, LarryJensen's "Red Baron", Don Gerken's"Negligee", C a r o l Epperly in hisCessna 172, and Jack Rathjen in his"Cruiser." Rides in Durand's "Taylor-craft" were given by Dick Olson.

Bill Bradford is selling his "Scat"for $250.00. It is 75 percent completeand good construction. The basicfuselage is done; the wings are at-tached as well as all control sur-faces. The engine mount is for a65 hp Continental.

receives his international dues paidfor one year by the chapter.

Since Fred Ashcraft sold his J-3,he is now going great Puns on his"Fly Baby." By constructing a simplevise-held sheet metal brake, he hasno trouble using it to form some ofthe fittings for his "Fly Baby."

Jerry Mahurin, with all the ribscompleted, has started building thewing spars for his Taylor monoplane.To date, he has acquired a 1200CCVW engine already converted forpower.

Bill Selby's J-3 restoration haslost out to his "Currie Wot." Reportshave the rib jigs laid out all readyto start building. Since the surfacesare simple in shape, trouble shouldbe comparatively nil.

Besides working on the ribs forhis Waco 10 restoration. Bill Ballardhas started on a 1940 Fairchild 24Wpowered by a 145 Warner. Latestnews on the projects, the fuselageof the Fairchild has b-jn strippedto the bare frame and work is beingdone on the new formers and fair-ing strips.

A busy man, but nonetheless abuilder, is Dr. George Burton in ElDorado who is now assembling hisfuselage for his Thorp T-18.

This chapter has had a very event-ful summer. To acquaint memberswith various plans, a set is circulatedeach month to help members decidewhich one they would like to build.

To give everyone a chance to workon the "Woody Pusher", a chapterproject, groups have been designatedto work on certain parts of the air-plane. At last report group "B" hasthe fuselage out of the jigs and uponreceiving their reorder of wood, willcontinue on, with Henry Scotchdo-pole in charge.

Individual projects are on themove, from an original biplane toan all-wood delta wing. John Rey-nolds and Milt Brown are working ontheir original biplane. They have itabout 45 percent completed and do-ing a beautiful job. Lou Longmire'spet project is a delta wing, all-wood,two-p l a c e side-by-side, retractablegear, with a wing span of 16 ft. and

Since Jim McFaddin removed theold Ranger off his "Fairchild" andreplaced it with a Warner, it fliesmuch better. He had a little troublewith the Ranger on his way backfrom the Arlington, Texas Fly-In.

Though all projects are not com-pleted, they have been brought in toillustrate a r e p o r t . Such was thecase when Bill Westmoreland broughtin an elevator from his T a y 1 o r"Titch", he also talked about the ad-vantages and disadvantages of usingdifferent type glues in homebuild-ing.

Bill Hughes, working hard on his"Tailwind", has completed the sparsand has begun working on the ribsnow. Incidentally, Bill won a trophyat the recent Wichita Fly-In.

A newcomer to the chapter, DeanHenson, has an "EAA Biplane" inthe makings. So far, he has all wingribs made and ready for inspection.The fuselage is going well exceptfor hand welding some wing fittingsand gear fittings on.

Not too long ago, a film "DensityAltitude" was shown to point out thefactors that affect density . . .tem-perature, altitude and humidity. Thefilm, put out by the FAA, is a mustfor those who reside in the highcountry. Earl Cummings was re-sponsible for the showing, and afterthe movie, cards were passed out

to send in to the FAA to computedensity altitude for their particularaircraft.

While on their way to the Renoraces, chapter members paid EAAPresident Paul Poberezny, Vice-Pres-ident Ray Scholler and TreasurerArt Kilps and their wives a surprisevisit upon their landing in Albuquer-que.• MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

Four years ago, on October 1, anew chapter was born. Since its birth,there has been a steady growth ofmembers and today the count is 43.Each year has seen the steady inflowof new members, pilots, and enthusi-asts. In their endeavor to promote sportaviation in the state, they were in-vited to attend the 25th AnniversaryAir Show at NAS Millington. Becauseof the fine showing of homebuiltsa t t e n d i n g , the Navy presentedtrophies to the three outstanding air-craft. They were: Sid Foster, Mem-phis—first place—Foster XST-2; DickRice, Kennett, Mo.—second place—Pitts "Special" and Grover Knoll,Clarendon, Ark.—third place—"Tail-wind." Given their own homebuilt parkingarea and literature booth, the chap-ter handed out a record 850 bro-chures and literature to aviation en-thusiasts among the 50,000 people at-tending! Participation can only bringgood to promote sport aviation inthe state.

Dyersburg, Tenn. held their DyerAviation Association Day during Oc-tober. The chapter and the MemphisSoaring Society participated in thefly-bys, flight demonstrations, staticdisplays, and displays of homebuiltaircraft and antique aircraft.• NORTHERN VIRGINIA

An enlightening talk on the ad-ministrative procedures for prospec-tive homebuilts was given by BobBurbick. It solved a number of mys-teries held by the members.

Speaker Bob Belter, a Navy pilot,talked on his experiences flying theF-111A and F-111B. He is one of thevery few who have flown both the

A slide and film presentation byJohn Ellis of Kal-Aero revealed hisexperience as a naval carrier pilot.From his report on the catapult take-off, it is understandable that it wasnot easy.

Recently, Ed Ksiazck of Allegantold of his experience as an aircraftcoyerer and finisher for some ofaviation's greats such as Benny How-ard and Roscoe Turner. He gavesome very good tips in the field ofcovering and finishing an aircraft.

Plans to show the 1966 EAA Con-vention film to service clubs in Kala-mazoo met with favorable reaction.It also included a short talk on EAA.
