PURDUE TO ADD TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION FOR ALL FACULTY AND STAFF IN SEPTEMBER

Shortly after the start of the fall 2017 semester, all of Purdue’s faculty and staff will need to begin using two-factor authentication, known at Purdue as BoilerKey, to log into the One Purdue (SAP) portal, improving security of personal and University data alike.

ITaP will roll out the new BoilerKey sign-up beginning in mid-April. Purdue faculty and staff can expect direct emails, social media posts and Purdue Today articles to give instructions on how and where to sign up throughout the summer and up until the September 19 deadline. The OnePurdue (SAP) portal allows employees to create leave requests and check paystubs. It also handles many of the University’s business functions.

Implementing BoilerKey at Purdue also protects the University from a growing number of cyberattacks on colleges and universities.

What is two-factor authentication?

Boiler Key adds a second login requirement to go with your password. At Purdue, it’s a numerical code randomly generated on a smartphone app called Duo or a key fob.

Shear Wave Velocity Structure and Seismic Discontinuities of the Lithosphere Beneath the Central United States—

Evidence of Long-lived Tectonic Modifications of the Continental Lithosphere

A thorough investigation of the continental lithosphere is essential in understanding continental evolution and growth, yet little is known about the basics of the lithospheric structure beneath continental interiors. In order to improve our under-

standing of the lithosphere structure of stable continents, we focus on the US Midcontinent by analyzing teleseismic earth-

quakes recorded by the EarthScope Transportable Array and the OIINK (Ozark-Illinois-INdiana-Kentucky) Flexible Array. We constructed a shear wave velocity model using Rayleigh wave tomography and found that (1) relatively high crustal

shear velocities characterize the southern Illinois Basin, which may correspond to high-density mafic intrusions emplaced into the crust during the development of the Reelfoot Rift; (2) relatively low mantle velocities are present beneath the New Madrid seismic zone, which may result from the refertilization of the lithospheric mantle during rifting. We also analyzed S -to-p converted waves to image the lithospheric discontinuities and found that (1) an absence of negative Sp phases at the

depths of lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) across much of the central US suggests a gradual velocity gradient

across this boundary; (2) widespread mid-lithospheric discontinuities (MLD) are present at depths between 65 km and 125 km across the area, which we interpret as a metasomatic layer rich in hydrous minerals from accumulation of crystalized magma within long-lived lithosphere; (3) a secondary and deeper MLD extends along the Nd model age line, which we hypothesize as the manifestation of terrane accretion, perhaps with a paleo-slab that dipped towards the northwest; (4) a strong negative Sp phase occurs beneath the Reelfoot Rift region, represents a present-day thinned lithosphere or a paleo-

LAB marking the top of mechanically and chemically rejuvenated mantle added during rifting.

A More Vast and Accessible Martian Sedimentary Rock Record

What was Earth like when life arose on our planet? Sedimentary rocks provide records of ancient environments, but the ever-active Earth did not preserve its oldest sediments. However, our neighboring world, Mars, did. Of course, we do not know whether Mars had life, but the planet has an older and accessible sedimentary rock record that can tell us something about environments that could be analogous to those of early Earth. The evidence that Mars has sedimentary rocks was first published in December 2000. Over the next 16 years, many important, related discoveries ensued. Some occurrences, such as a fossil river delta in Eberswalde crater, were eroded in a way that their form mimics and tells us about their original environment. Since 2000, the Martian sedimentary rocks that got the most attention were ones in which the rocks are layered, light toned, and have very few superimposed impact craters. Images from the Curiosity rover and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have shown that the story is not so simple. The view is changing, radically. Those light-toned, layered rocks were just a sub-set of a greater whole. Sedimentary rocks are prevalent throughout the planet’s ancient, heavily cratered terrain and include cases that have been mistaken for lavas, for decades, because of their tone, composition, and resistance to erosion. In addition, the manner in which sedimentary rocks erode is a major contributor to the expression of Martian landscapes.

Abstract: Advancements in science and technology over the last several decades have led to new discoveries and greater knowledge of our environment. From computer hardware and software to instrumentation and remote sensing, the rapid pace of development has brought both challenges and opportunities in the fields of science and engineering. In this talk, Dr. Bensman will highlight several key innovations since his days at Purdue; as well as emerging trends that may lead current Boilermakers to even greater discoveries in the decades ahead.

PURDUE VETERINARY MEDICINE

PURDUE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

I

PVMRESEARCHDAY KEYNOTE SPEAKER JONNA MAZET, DVM, MPVM, PHD Professor of Epidemiology and Disease Ecology, University of California, Davis Executive Director, One Health Institute, University of California, Davis

Dr. Jonna Mazet earned her doctorate of veterinary medicine, masters of preventative medicine, and her PhD in epidemiology from UC Davis. In addition to her faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, she serves as the Executive Director of the UC Davis One Health Institute (OHI). Dr. Mazet specializes in emerging infectious diseases and wildlife epidemiology, and as director of OHI, focuses on global health problem solving.

“One Health - A Prescription for Preparedness” The frequency of pandemics is increasing, driven by surging populations,

environmental change and globalized trade and travel. The SARS, pandemic infuenza, MERS, Ebola and Zika virus outbreaks illustrate that we are ill-prepared to mitigate the impact of a novel zoonotic virus or prevent its emergence – leaving humanity

vulnerable to catastrophe. Only a small proportion of viral threats have been identifed (estimated to be much less than 1%). The One Health approach has now been applied

in over 30 countries, providing a proof of concept that viruses and their associated risk ecology can be identifed in advance of spillover. Activities in these countries also provide evidence that a global initiative to identify and characterize most signifcant

viral threats circulating in the world is achievable over the next ten years at a total cost less than the fnancial burden of response to just one spillover – a critical and

essential step towards ending the pandemic era.
