The gist of his sermon as I got it was that in Jesus’ last prayer he “talks about being one – together – united” which Rev. Kroohs related to our vow at baptism to “respect the dignity of every human being” and I think that this fits in our relations in All Saints Church today. We all have our own ideas of how best to accomplish the various tasks and projects that are essential to running our church and to “spread the love of God by all we do and say”, but are we sometimes too focused on goal setting and efficiency than we are on what is truly important. A Church such as ours has a strong social side to our religious practice and when we include more people and listen to and use their ideas we nurture that re- spect for their dignity. Good examples of this are the projects listed above along with the Garden of Eatin’, but this also applies to our everyday Church tasks and is particularly true during times of stress such as when we are pursuing the appointment of a new priest. As we often say when a member is taking Eucharist to one that cannot be present that day, “we are all one body because we all share one bread, one cup” and this unites us as Episcopalians and Christians. With this in mind please pray the following prayer that is contained in “The Book of Common Prayer” under the title “For the Church.” Gracious Father, we pray for the holy Catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ thy Son our Savior. Amen. DEAR ALL SAINTS… This has been a sad time for us with the loss of Henry and Ruth Coble and Stephen Gee. These were all stalwart members of our church community and very well loved for who they were and they will not be forgotten for a long time to come. I am extremely proud of the way we all jump into action tod prepare the best ceremony that we can muster for the family and friends of the deceased. This is just part of “community” that is a hallmark of All Saints.

Hats off to Bobby Byrd and Maureen Ballseiper for their contribution to a very successful Shredding Event. Bobby graciously donated the fee to have Shamrock Shredding visit at All Saints on Saturday morning, May 21st and the two of them ran the event like profes-sionals. We all had a good time conversing with our “customers” and along with per-forming a little environmental recycling we managed to collect $948.00. Along these same lines, Sue Starr headed up a very successful plant sale that netted $553.28 and provided opportunity for the purchase of some high quality plants. Both of these amounts will be applied to our “In Reach” account to help cover items that are needed for the church. While it is very rewarding to work on “Outreach” projects it is necessary to take care of All Saints as well.

Speaking of taking care of All Saints, a short time ago Rev Kroohs spoke to us about Christian unity.

A Church such as ours has a strong social side to our religious practice and when we include more people and listen to and use their ideas we nurture that re-spect for their dignity.

With this in mind please pray the following prayer that is contained in “The Book of Common Prayer” under the title “For the Church.”

Gracious Father, we pray for the holy Catholic Church. Amen.

from the Rector…

One of the most enjoyable roles for an in-terim Rector is to help you see what a won-derful, loving church you are! Of course inspiring worship is at the center. But ac-tions ‘beyond the wall’ demonstrate a deep love of God. There are too many to list in this small space so 3 examples:

1) Just a few months ago Stephen McCollum described a dream for a community garden. Now we have 4 planting beds

2) Welcome Home is rapidly coming to-gether to support Higher Ground which is a wonderful community of people who society at large does not always welcome.

3) Knowing how much All Saints has to offer people who have not found a spiritual home, a team of members is working to expand our invitation to visit and encourage visitors to become involved.

Don’t worry! We will not become a mega church! But getting back to where we were just a few years ago will allow us to expand ministries even further.

–Ken Kroohs

News Update: May 2016

On Monday, June 6th, the Search Committee will begin video conference interviews with pro-

spective candidates for our new rector. The Search Committee met several times in May to

frame the questions each candidate will be asked. Each interview will last one hour. Video

conferencing allows us to see each candidate and for the candidate to see the Search Com-

mittee interviewer. Once all candidates have been interviewed the Search Committee will

pause for reflection and prayer for up to 10 days and then begin to compile the notes taken by

each individual member, keeping in mind the information and feedback from our Cottage

Conversations. The interviews will conclude Wednesday evening, June 8th.

Search Committee News Update

Our Garden Grows! The Garden of Eatin’ is thriving, thanks to All Saints volunteers who built the raised beds, spread the soil, planted the starters, and took care of details. We’re taking signups from our families and friends to nurture the garden during growing season. As of Memorial Day, we have volunteers through July. We need will-ing workers in August as well, when our vegetables will hope-

fully be ready to harvest and distribute to local food pantries.

Volunteers have signed up on the poster in the gathering space. In early June, an email re-minding them of their week will go out to all volunteers. This list will provide a link between workers. We will also have a white board near the garden where volunteers can leave messag-es regarding watering, weeding, and harvesting needs for the next group.

The three planted beds are a beautiful sight to behold, thanks to our hard-working volunteers and bountiful rainfall since Rogation Sunday. The fourth bed is ready for a guest group to plant and cultivate.

If you are available in August to help with our community garden, please send an email to Faith Hawes ([email protected]) or call her at 336-272-4818.

Have a great summer. Faith Hawes, Garden of Eatin’ volunteer

CURSILLO WEEKEND

June 23-26

Cursillo is ‘a short course in Christianity’

and many of our songs and prayers have

originated there.

It is a weekend filled with prayer, fun,

learning and lots of love! This one is go-

ing to be held in Concord North Carolina.

If you are interested, or have questions,

ask Ken. There are

many people at All

Saints who have

attended weekends

and would be happy to

discuss it with you.

WHOSE News May 2016

It has been a busy time for All Saints WHOSE (We Help Organize Special Events) and the many members of the congregation who have lent a hand with:

A Lemonade on the Lawn (that wound up moving indoors) as part of the blessing of the Garden of Eatin’ on Rogation Sunday

A successful first PLANT SALE

Two emotional farewells –to Stephen Gee and Ruth Coble—in three days

But Wait…There’s More:

Welcome Home is June 4th.

Jammin’ Picnics: Over the summer, we are hoping to have a monthly gathering on Sunday evenings with music (All Saints musicians, friends of friends, student musicians, recorded music…whatever comes our way) and SINGING. Bring your family, a blanket or chairs, and a picnic supper and come sing or just enjoy the music. WHOSE will provide drinks. Pray for good weather at 5 o’clock on the following Sundays: June 26th, July 17th, and August 14th.

Dinner to support a local mission experience for young people across the convocation. WHOSE are bringing a taco bar and sundae bar to St. Andrew’s on July 18, the first night of this 3-day event being coordinated by Reverend Audra Abt, who was ordained at All Saints a few years ago.

Lobstahrama: BUY A LOBSTER, HELP A VET. We will once again be raising money for The Servant Center, which does so much to help homeless and disabled veterans, by selling whole live lobsters flown in from Maine as well as lobster rolls. WHOSE and WHOSE help-ers will be on hand to distribute these choice crustaceans and even cook them for the squeamish on October 8th.

OKTOBERFEST is coming. Come raise a stein and savor delicious German food in the first of our “Many Faces of All Saints” ethnic dinners on October 29th.

Art-a-Fair will again draw artists and craftspeople to sell their wares, with a portion of their sales going to All Saints to pass on to the winter emergency shelters. Plan to get your Christmas shopping off to a great start and enjoy music, food, and wine on December 4th.

No Dates Yet, But be on the lookout for:

This Little Light of Mine to improve outside lighting at All Saints

Farewell to Ken and Shirley—we will miss you!

Welcome to our New Rector—we look forward to your arrival!

FIRST ALP/GCNC TUTOR TRAINING AT ALL SAINTS The Augustine Literacy Project®, Guilford County, NC now has 9 newly trained tutors who spent May 2-5 and 9-12 from 8:15 to 1:00 learning the tutoring format of the Wil-son Reading Program, along with other strategies. After intense hours of “classwork,” the tutors each assessed a child and then used their data to design individualized learn-ing lessons for their tutee. Each tutor and tutee “practiced” and learned during four reading sessions at Guilford Elementary School. The training sessions were led by coaches Linda Bedell, Ninevah Murray, Brenda Steadman and Sue Mercier. Stephen McCollum provided management and support for the training sessions.

These 9 tutors, Nancy Poulos, Anna Clare Allen, Gale Robins, Joee Barbour, Charlie and Ruth Jones, Mimi Pomeroy and Markda Bullard, Adele Filip, received free training and materials through a grant from the Guilford County, NC branch of NCAE. Angela Jackson is the GCS support for the program, along with many central office administrators and school principals.

As the training sessions and practicums came to a close, the tutors were reluctant to leave their tutees. So, rather than meeting their child for lessons in September, eight of the nine tutors asked to continue tutoring until school closes in June! A special thank you is extended to Rev. Larry Fitzgerald of Celia Phelps United Methodist Church and Rev. Ken Kroohs of All Saints for their prayerful support and to the members of Celia Phelps for the delicious treats.

The next ALP/GCNC Tutor Training will be held September 6-9 and 12-15 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Greensboro. If you are interested, contact Sue Mercier, Director at [email protected]. -Sue Mercier
