Basic Firearms Safety is a Must for Hunting Free firearm safety courses available year-round The NC Wildlife Re- sources Commission's Home From The Hunt campaign encourages hunters to take the proper precautions with firearms to be safe during time spent outdoors. Firearms safety is an element of in- struction taught by the Commission's Hunter Edu- cation Program, with free courses offered year- round, throughout the state. Instructors advise hunters to prioritize safety when handling firearms: • Point a firearm in a safe direction at all times. • Treat every firearm with the respect due a loaded gun. • Identify your target and what's beyond it. • Keep your finger off the trigger until you have posi- tively identified your target and are ready to shoot. "Firearms safety is ex- ercising caution and using your head," said Travis Casper, Hunting Educa- tion Program coordinator. "You can't be too careful. Always maintain muzzle control. Obey hunting and firearm regulations and put into practice what you've learned in hunter education." It is important for hunters to maintain firearm proficiency. It is important to take time to build marksmanship skills, he said. "Information on public and private shooting ranges is available at our website, www.ncwildlife.org ," Casper said. "The Wildlife Commission and various partners are working to ex- pand shooting range op- portunities across the state. The Wildlife Com- mission funds its propor- tion of range construction using hunting license re- ceipts, with maintenance through Pittman-Robert- son funds, which are 10 percent excise taxes col- lected from manufacturers of guns and ammunition." The Home From The Hunt campaign also rec- ommends anyone spend- ing time outdoors in areas shared with hunters wear blaze orange. Blaze orange clothing stands out against an outdoor background and studies have proven it increases visibility of the wearer in lowlight situa- tions. Also, hunters should consider using a flashlight when walking in lowlight and dark conditions. For more information on hunting seasons, Hunt- ing Heritage Apprentice Permits and the Hunter Education Program, go to www.ncwildlife.org or call 919-707-0031.
