Welcome and Greetings 9:00 AM Opening Keynote Address 9:15 - 10:00 AM Topic: Power to the Profession: Transforming the Early Childhood Education Workforce Presenter: Rhian Evans Allvin, CEO, NAEYC National Association for the Education of Young Children First Session 10:15 - 12:00 Noon Collaboratively Creating a Pathway to Success for Early Learning 1. The Mt. Laurel School district’s efforts are focused on the development and

implementation of full-day Kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year. In preparation, the district has launched a two year initiative to enhance early childhood programming in Kindergarten and first through third grades in alignment with the NJ Kindergarten & First through Third Grade Implementation Guidelines. The plan includes assessing district facilities for readiness, curriculum development, hiring highly qualified staff, enhancing classroom learning environments, and providing professional development opportunities. Focusing on Kindergarten, the district is collaborating with the NJ Department of Education, Division of Early Childhood, and the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) to create a high quality learning experience for all children.

Presenters: George J. Rafferty, Superintendent and Dr. Sharon Vitella, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction Mount Laurel School District

2. The P-3 Opportunity in ESSA: Success for EACH Child and for ALL Children As the Every Student Succeeds Act moves from planning to implementation, there are

Second Session 1:15 - 3:00 PM 7. Laying the Foundation for Sustained PreK - Third Grade Learning A discussion with the New Jersey Department of Education designed to deepen

educators’ knowledge base and advance their ability to use developmentally appropriate and effective P-3 approaches. As research continues to show the importance of brain development on executive functioning and social emotional growth, young children benefit the most from high quality early childhood education programs that offer rich opportunities to nurture their potential. New Jersey’s commitment to high quality preschool services extends beyond the classroom, placing equal emphasis on supports for children and their families.

Presenter: Laura C. Morana - Acting Chief Academic Officer, NJDOE 8. Making Room on your Plate for Early Learning Advocacy

There is no question that strong early learning programs are the foundations for young students’ short-term and long-term educational successes. Developing and paying for those strong programs however, can take a set of skills that are not often taught in our graduate programs, i.e. how to be an effective advocate. Learn how advocating both inside and outside your schools and classrooms can turn the curve on providing young learners with a strong learning foundation that will jump-start their learning and long-term success!

Presenter: Cynthia Rice, Senior Policy Analyst, Advocates for Children of New Jersey 9. Multicultural Content Integration into Early Childhood Problem-based Learning Experiences

In order for students to see themselves as having a place in the sciences, they need to see themselves in science, science literature, and science experiences. This presentation will allow participants to explore the integration of multicultural literature in problem-based learning experiences designed for Pre-K and Kindergarten. Using social constructivist approaches to learning, participants will explore problem-based learning through discussions and experiences while designing boats and roller coasters.

Presenters: Scott Bortnick, Principal, Howard Brunner Elementary School Amber Jarrett, Kindergarten Teacher, Howard Brunner Elementary School Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District

10. Growth vs Grades The importance of a strong PreK-3 experience can’t be emphasized enough. The world

of PreK-3 is messy and uneven, so is child development. Successfully implementing high quality developmentally appropriate classrooms requires teachers and administrators to focus on growth vs grades, outcomes vs outputs, and intentional vs unintentional experiences. All the aforementioned requires a deep understanding of the children in your classrooms. Utilizing Teaching Strategies GOLD, Kindergarten Entry Assessment, continuums, social/emotional development and children’s instructional settings are all critical elements to supporting the development and learning of each and every child.

Presenter: Rick Falkenstein, Superintendent, Kingwood Township School District
