For custom home builder Mike Rathgeb, Spencer Homes is the culmination of a career that began with a job working for a builder/developer during his college years at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Upon graduation he pursued other opportunities in hu-

man resources, sales and marketing, and discovered that an excellent customer experience is the key to success no matter what field. The customer experience at Spencer Homes offers the client technology tools, personal design service as well as the latest features and trends in floor plans that accommodate how people live today.

Spencer Homes has been building quality custom homes since 2005 throughout the Metro East, with primary developments in Edwardsville, Glen Carbon and Troy. These towns are among the fastest growing communi-ties in the St. Louis metropolitan area and for good reason. Located only 25 minutes from the Gateway Arch, these towns are well known for having reputable schools, a friendly "small town" atmosphere and a tremendous quality of life.

SIUE keeps the nightlife and art scene alive in these com-munities, while outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the connections to over 85 miles of paved bike trails running throughout the county. There is also an eclectic mix of retail offering quality shopping at both small boutique shops lining the downtown boardwalk and nationally known retailers. Adding to all this is an amazing array of restaurant choices with several obtain-ing critical acclaim. “There are many home builders to choose from so I work hard to differentiate our home de-signs, product offerings and customer resources from others,” Rathgeb said. “I constantly ask myself, ‘How can we add value to our clients’ custom home building experience?'"

In particular, Spencer Homes offers each client their own personal design and selections consultant as well as a 24/7 step-by-step web site for managing the custom home-build process. Within the client-secure site, which can be accessed right from their phone, tablet or laptop, customers are able to review and approve selections, view a construction calendar, communicate to their build team, share timeline photos with family and friends as well as see the up-to-date budget.

“The customer has complete visibility to their custom home project,” Rathgeb said. “They know exactly when the foundation is scheduled to be poured, when the roof goes on and, most importantly, when decisions from them need to be made.”

Having several developments currently open, @Cloverdale is a simplified living neighborhood near Edwardsville High School with as many terrific features outside as inside the home. @Cloverdale is neighbors to the Madison County Trails System, walking distance to downtown, the movie theater, shopping, restaurants and easy access to Governors Parkway. Home prices are also more affordable and start in the $290,000s.

Floor plans offered in @Cloverdale are single-family homes with choices of two, three or four bedrooms including single- story, main-floor master and traditional two-story designs. All feature a luxurious master suite as well as open living spaces perfect for entertaining.

Several plans offer a flex room appropriate for a home of-fice, hobby room or guest accommodations. The hallmark of a Spencer Home, though, is the careful attention to detail like nooks and storage spaces, built-in alcoves, architectural features and stylish kitchens.

Brookshire Hamlet is a testament to the Spencer Homes’ quality construction and up-to-date features reflecting the

new “aging in place” trend making these homes just right for empty nesters and baby boom-ers. Visitors will find single-story open floor plans with seamless transitions from indoors to outdoors, wider hallways and door openings, extra-large showers with zero-entry threshold as well as energy efficient windows, heating and cooling systems, and appliances. There is a beautiful display at Brookshire Hamlet showcasing all that’s best about Spencer Homes.

The Fountains of Sunset just off Highway 157, across from Sunset Hills Country Club, and Shadow Creek just outside of Troy are open as well and offer quiet, family-oriented locations.

Since 1968, Hudson Tree Service has been a professional resource for tree care performed by ISA certified arbor-

ists and highly trained crews who can help create an outdoor living environment that is beautiful, healthy and safe.

Gene Joshu, owner and ISA certified arborist, said that proactive tree service and preven-tative maintenance will actually help protect the value of one’s home. Hudson Tree Service can assist customers with immediate needs or provide a consultation to learn more.

The professionals at Hudson Tree Service will inspect your landscape, diagnose any prob-lems, and make recommendations based upon years of experience and provide a tree service estimate. Customers are always wel-come to walk along and ask questions about the condition of their trees and shrubs.

While attending Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville - where he graduated with an economics degree in 1975 - Joshu worked for the original owner of the company, John Hudson. Then, just two years after gradu-ating, Hudson sold the business to Joshu where he’s been ever since.

Located now among the rolling hills south of Belleville and east of Millstadt - just a stone’s throw from where Joshu grew up – Hud-son’s has built a strong reputation for great service featuring an arborist’s knowledge and expertise. Specifically, an arborist is a professional in cultivation, management and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennial woody plants. Joshu and two other staff members are ISA certi-fied arborists.

“We will design a tree service and plant health care program that addresses the specific conditions of your landscape as well as your personal preferences and eco-sensibilities,” Joshu said. “Our customers can enjoy the peace of mind and confidence that comes from working with a company that is passionate about tree service and has many credentials.”

Among the many services Hudson’s offers for residential and commercialproperties are:• Tree pruning and trimming• Tree removal, take-downs and re-

placement of trees• Stump grinding • Planting of trees and shrubs• Disease and Insect Control on orna-

mental and shade trees• Emergency tree service• 14-point storm damage risk audit• Lightening protection• Bracing and cabling

Their reputation for excellent work has given them the opportunity to become the tree service for destinations such as The Missouri Botanical Garden and The Muny in Forest Park. Many municipalities and housing au-thorities are among the commercial proper-ties Hudson’s tends to in the Metro East.

For more information, call (618) 233-2900; email [email protected]; and visit the web site at www.hudsontree.com.

Jacob Family Has Expanded To Include 4 DivisionsJacob Family Has Expanded To Include 4 Divisions

Since 1977, Jacob Family Enterprises, Inc. has provided a wide range of home improve-ment services to area homeowners. Family-owned and operated since opening from the onset as Jacob Aluminum, the Jacob family has continued to add products and services

throughout the years to meet local needs. Now operated by brothers Scott and Bud Jacob, Jacob Family Enterprises, Inc. includes four divisions: Jacob Sunroom and Exte-riors, Jacob Showers and Baths, Chesley Fence and Deck, and Daech and Bauer Roofing, Inc. All four divisions share one common goal: To provide customers with the best products and service at the best prices.

Jacob Sunroom and ExteriorsJacob Sunroom and Exteriors is an exclusive dealer for the most energy-efficient patio room, windows and siding on the market today. Jacob spends a great deal of time researching different product lines to be able to say for certain that they provide the best quality and lowest prices because they buy directly from the manufacturer. This enables the com-pany to supply a written labor warranty and manufacturer warranty on all products.

Jacob’s exclusive all-vinyl, true four-season sunroom outperforms competitors with its energy-efficient exclusive Cardinal 366-sunroom glass package. In addi-tion, Jacob uses only factory-trained and certified personnel for installation.

Jacob is an exclusive dealer for the Preservation line of siding and windows. These top-rated, energy-efficient triple-pane windows, along with the thickest insulated siding available, will give customers a beautiful home makeover while reducing energy costs. Visit www.JacobSunroom.com or www.JacobExteriors.com for more information.

Jacob Showers and BathsCreated several years ago to help homeowners update their aging baths and showers, Jacob Showers and Baths can give new life to bathrooms and solve common problems like unsightly

old tubs or showers, and falling hazards of a standard bathtub. In addition to traditional baths and showers, Jacob offers aging in place and handicap accessible options such as walk-in bathtubs and barrier-free showers. Jacob Showers and Baths installs American made products with written labor warranties and manufacturer warranties. Visit www.ConvertMyBathtub.com for more information.

For both divisions, stop by the Jacob showroom at 9723 W. State Route 161, Fairview Heights and call (618) 397-4391.

Chesley Fence and DeckNeed a fence or a custom-designed deck? Call the area’s premier con-tractor, Chesley Fence and Deck today and see how affordable a fence or deck can be for your home. Chesley has been installing fences and decks since 1967 by the company’s own employees - not subcontrac-tors. In fact, their foremen have an average of eight years running their own truck. “We take a lot of pride in what we install and how we install it,” said Tim Haug, general manager. For more information call (618) 236-2229, or visit www.ChesleyFence.com.

Daech and Bauer Roofing, Inc.Daech and Bauer Roofing, Inc. is a full-service 24/7 roofing company. One of the area’s premier roofing companies, it has earned the Preferred Contractor status with Owens Corning; has an A+ rating with the BBB; is a longtime member of the HBA and Remodeler’s Council; and carries a commercial and residential roofing license. The company does everything from small repair jobs to residential shingle work to huge commercial projects.

Daech and Bauer provides free roof inspections and will advise if repair or replacement is needed. In many cases, technicians can do repairs on the spot if desired.

In the last 10 years, energy-efficient and eco-friendly home products, geared to-wards simplifying our lives have become more desirable. The window treatment industry has moved forward to meet our new goals with more innovations and product improvements than can be men-tioned in this article. However, the beau-tiful and timeless interior shutter system, in all of its different forms, has undergone little transformation and is now enjoying a new relevance.

“When a simple slatted product is called for, please don’t re-invest in more 1” and 2” horizontal blinds without considering the beauty, value and efficiencies of a custom shutter system,” said Jennaver Brown, owner of Eye on Design Drapery, Blinds and Shutters, Inc. “In a well-made shutter, homeowners can find a durable, energy-efficient, eco-friendly and mainte-nance-free window treatment with privacy and light control features that make them an excellent value.”

system, such as the “Newstyle” shutter system by Hunter Douglas can increase that R-Value by 70% when added to this type of window. Horizontal blinds are generally unable to increase the R-Value of this window type by more than 15%.

A well-designed shutter will reduce your energy costs and add to the re-sale value of your home in ways that horizontal blinds cannot.

Visit the newly renovated Eye on Design Gallery in historic downtown Belleville at 309 East Main and choose from over 5,000 fabric samples and let our designers help create your dream room.

Or, call us at (618) 257-9750 for your free in-home consultation and we will bring our expertise to your home, and help you select the perfect custom bedding and window treatment for you.

Homeowners frequently worry that shutters will make their home too dark. A shutter that is designed with the right size vane, the correct color and the right mounting style - to reduce glass cover-age - can actually add light to a room and increase the view through the vanes to a level higher than a standard blind.

Shutters can handle almost every spe-cialty shape, tall or tilt-in window that we encounter. Recently, shutters have even become motorized to give the home-owner control of those difficult to reach windows that are often found in a custom home.

“With 50% of our energy loss occurring at the windows of our home, interior shut-ters are an investment with a measure-able return,” said Brown. A modern, high- quality, double pane Low-E window offers an R-Value of approx. 3.5 dependent upon the manufacturer. A well-measured and well-constructed, high-quality, shutter

Dream Play Recreation Offers the Absolute Finest...

Since 1991, Dream Play Recreation has offered a colorful myriad of the highest quality playground and recreational equipment on the market. In 2016, Dream Play has ex-panded their offerings by adding Rainbow Play Systems - “America’s Most Trusted Name Brand” – to a product line up that already included Goalsetter, Goalrilla and American Eagle Basketball Systems, All-Ball Pro Sports Trainers (made in St. Louis) and the revolutionary Springfree Trampoline.

“Safety is a huge parental concern: the playsets and tram-polines we offer are the safest, and best built in the coun-try,” said Tim Albers, owner. “Plus, our in-house installers take all the safety parameters into account to ensure a safe play environment once the equipment is installed. Dream Play will make sure the job is done right.”

The premium brand of playsets that Dream Play carries is Rainbow Play Systems because it offers only the best in quality, safety, value and expandability. Rainbow, which started in 1985, has the largest swing set factory in the world and is located in Brookings, South Dakota. “All Rainbow Play Systems are constructed of redwood or cedar, which are naturally resistant to insects and decay, making it the best choice for any outdoor playset. All the edges of the wood are routed, rounded, sanded smooth and pre-stained from the factory. In addition, using only true construction size beams, all the major joints are through-bolted, some using triple joint construction, and secured with half-inch commercial hardware,” Albers said. “No other playset company makes their products this way. Redwood and cedar also takes stain well so it’s not as maintenance intense as other lumber. Rainbow Play Systems are simply the best made swing sets in America.”

When it comes to basketball goals, Dream Play offers the best built goals you can buy. Goalsetter and American Eagle are 100 percent American made with a lifetime warranty.

“These goals have no peers in terms of build quality, functionality and durability. We also carry Goalrilla basketball goals. They have really upped their game in the market with their ‘Clear View’ line-up of goals made to mimic the look of basketball goals you see in college and professional arenas, and also come with a lifetime warranty.”

And for fun plus fantastic health benefits, Springfree Trampolines are the safest trampoline in the world.

“Springfree is the only trampoline I will carry. Simply put, they have engineered 90 percent of all product related injuries that occur on trampolines out of the product. There are no springs or metal frame to fall on and you can’t fall out. Plus, the net is not held up with steel poles that also cause injury,” he said. Springfree uses flexible glass infused rods for its bounce. The rods lie beneath the jumping surface out of harms way. Traditional trampo-lines have springs that give it the bounce, and despite safety pads, can still injure.

“The health benefits of trampolines have long been known: 10 minutes on a trampoline is equal to 30 min-utes of jogging. Astronauts train on trampolines. With Springfree, you can have all the benefits without the negatives,” Albers said.

Dream Play Recreation invites all customers to experience their 12,000-squarefoot showroom – one of the largest in the country – filled with 19 playsets, nine basketball goals in a court area, three trampolines and four sport trainers on display ready for your test play.

Dream Play Recreation is located at 17373 Edison Avenue in Chesterfield, MO; (636) 530-0055 or (800) 962-0055; www.dreamplayrec.com.

In December 2014, The Breast Health Center at Memorial began providing 3-D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) for breast cancer screening. In fact, Memorial was the first hospital in the Metro East to offer this newest breast imaging modality.

Breast tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue. The Hologic system used by Me-morial offers exceptionally sharp breast images and an advanced ergonomic design providing more patient comfort.

“We believe breast tomosynthesis will benefit all screening and diagnostic mammography patients and is especially valuable for women receiving baseline screening, those who have dense breast tissue and/or women with a personal history of breast cancer,” said James Clanahan, M.D., medical director of The Breast Center at Memorial and general surgeon with Lincoln Surgical.

The tomosynthesis screening experience is similar to a traditional mammogram. During a tomosynthesis exam, multiple low-dose images of the breast are acquired at different angles. These images are then used to produce a series of one-millimeter thick slices that can be viewed as a 3D construction of the breast.

By offering women the latest technology in mammography, The Breast Health Center at Memorial expects to increase the number of area women who will be routinely screened. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of sur-vival; if detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

The Breast Health Center at Memorial is committed to providing the lat-est technology in the fight against breast cancer. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (618) 257-4949.

When your child works very hard but still gets a poor report card

or your child avoids reading and home-work as much as possible, Unger Eyec-are may be able to help.

When a child complains that he can’t see the board your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign that you need to schedule an eye exam.

Why an eye exam? When a child strug-gles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s dif-ficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner”? These are signs of a vision problem.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning that you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is noth-ing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, op-tometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital that you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.”

Children do not know how they are sup-posed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the

most obvious symptoms which indicate that a child could have a vision problem, including:

• Problems with tracking• Poor comprehension and

attention span• Loses place while reading• Points to words while reading• Avoids close work such as

reading• Reverses letters or words in

reading and writing• Homework takes FOREVER when

it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more information visit: www.readingandvision.com or call 618-667-2020.

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS?

Thomas K. Unger, O.D. • Alice E. Unger, O.D.534 Edwardsville Rd., Troy, IL • (618) 667-2020www.readingandvision.com

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS!1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of

undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child...• Dislike reading?• Skip or reread lines?• Prefer to be read to?• Lose place when reading?• Have trouble remembering what has been read?• Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?• Make numbers/letter reversals?• Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

For more than 100 years, the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most

children served by the agency live in single-parent and low-income families, or households where a parent is incarcerated.

“These children have a lot of ‘enemies,’” Executive Director Doug Clements said, “like drugs, violence, gangs – we take that child and walk side-by-side with them until they get through school and find a good, decent-paying job.

“But we don’t just work with the child, we work with the family – ‘wholistically’ with a ‘W’,” Clements said. “ We have access to many agencies and resources to help that family get to where they need to go; to help them understand the forms they have to fill out – Big Brothers Big Sisters encourages empowerment.”

As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported men-toring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”).

Providing a system of ongoing evaluation and support, Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that Littles will perform better in school and avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others. The Southwestern Illinois agency, located in Belleville, is currently helping 1,000 kids and 80 to 90 are on a waiting list because they are in constant need of volunteers, aka Bigs.

If a person is interested in becoming a Big, they will go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. Then Bigs and Littles are matched based on location, personali-ties and preferences. Full support is provided from the start, so matches can grow into lasting, fruitful friendships. It’s also important to note that the entire matching process is made possible through donations.

What’s a Big and Little to do?Each match is unique. Getting together doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activity - just a few hours every month doing things the Little and Big already enjoy. For example:• Playing catch• Reading books• Getting ice cream• Going to a museum• Providing advice and inspiration

How do you affect the life of a Little?A study for Big Brothers Big Sisters found that kids matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister:• are more confident• are more likely to steer clear of drugs and alcohol• do better in school• get along better with their family and friends• feel better about themselves

For more information about Big Brothers Big Sisters, contact Beverly at (618) 398-3162 or email [email protected] and visit bbbsil.org.

What I’ve grown to know…By Keywanna

What I’ve grown to know about confidence is that, don’t doubt how you feel about yourself or don’t let other people break your confidence. Believe in yourself…always.

What I’ve grown to know about loving one another in my family is that you have to love them even when you are mad or happy with them.

I’ve grown to know that school is nothing to play with. Just go there and learn. Don’t go there to play. Don’t get sus-pended or get bad grades.

I have grown to know that God is there every step of the way. When you’re down, he’s there, when you’re crying he’s there, and he’s there when no one else is there.

I’ve grown to know that friends are cool to hang with but not everyone is your friend.

I’ve grown to know that success is focusing on your dream to get where you want to be in life.

I’ve grown to know that courage is when you’re afraid to do something good but you do it anyway.

I’ve grown to know being a Little Sister is the best thing that ever happened to me because of my Big Sister Pamela Manning.

I’ve grown to know that my Big Sister Pam is there for me when I’m good or bad.

This poem by Little Sister Keywanna illustrates “exactly what we want to instill in our children and families,” said Executive Director Doug Clements.

The city of Edwardsville/Glen Carbon is hosting the third annual Pizza Prowl for the community and this year it will include samples of a variety of menu items – not just pizza.

For the first two years, several restaurants – last year there were 15 - participated in a contest to see which one was the "Best of the Best." This year, in addition to the area restaurants serving pizza, the competition is open to all local restaurants. Pro-ceeds will benefit the local Glen-Ed Pantry (www.glenedpantry.org) and the Edwardsville High School Marching Band (www.edwardsvillebands.com) that is raising money to visit Disney World.

“This is such a fun event for all ages,” said Event Coordinator Shonda Justice. “And the best part is we are raising money for the community.”

Patrons with wristbands will “sample-hop” from restaurant to restaurant to taste each venue's unique food creation and then they vote on their favorites. The idea is to keep things moving.

Tickets can be purchased at www.pizzaprowl.net or at the door of the high school on the day of the

event. General Admission $10; Kids 12 and under $8; Family of 4 $35. Participants will be able to pur-chase tickets with Groupon.com and dealsaver.com beginning March 20, 2016.

On the day of the event, bring the ticket or printed receipt to Edwardsville High School at 9 a.m. to claim a wristband, which serves as vouchers to par-ticipate. An official voting ballot will also be issued with each wristband that will list all participating restaurants. The voting will be judged in four cat-egories: Overall Taste, Visual Appeal, Ingredients and Crust (pizza).

After sampling, Pizza Prowlers will report back to Edwardsville High School to cast their ballots. (Results will be emailed and announced in the Edwardsville Intelligencer.) A live auction will take place at 12:30 p.m. Find all kinds of gift cards, gift certificates and other surprises from local stores/restaurants that will be available for bidding. Be sure to register for the auction when returning from restaurant hopping.

For more information, visit pizzaprowl.net or call Shonda Justice at (618) 514-5588.

SchoolAt Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a differ-ence in the fight against cancer, just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year!

Relay For Life teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park or fairground. Events are up to 24 hours long, and because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times.

Now's the time to sign up online at RelayForLife.org! Through fundraising involvement, Relay For Life par-ticipants ensure the life-saving mission of the American Cancer Society is supported. Volunteers can find fundrais-ing ideas, incentive program details and encouragement through a number of channels also at RelayForLife.org and on Relay Nation, an online community developed just for Relay For Life participants.

Visit the Butterfly House in March and April for fun and learning dur-ing March Morpho Mania and Spring Fling. Spring begins at the Butterfly House March 1 with the start of March Morpho Mania. Enjoy the beauty of the rain forest without leaving Missouri during this event, which features nearly 3,000 Blue Morpho Butterflies in free flight inside the 8,000-square-foot tropical conservatory. March Morpho runs through March 31.

Blue Morphos are native to the forests of Central and South America. They are one of the largest butterflies at the Butterfly House with a six-inch wingspan. Their dazzling blue wings are lined with tiny scales that allow only blue light to escape, resulting in their blue appearance. Throughout March, visitors will learn more about this creature and the role butterflies play in nature through interpretive signage in the conservatory and ex-hibit hall. March Morpho Mania is included with regular admission.

In addition to the spectacular sights inside the conservatory, there will be daily activities for children in the Outpost including rainforest-themed activities and encounters with living arthropods. Each weekend local ar-tisans, including the Gateway Parrot Club on March 19 and 20 will exhibit at the Butterfly House. The Butterfly House gift shop will be stocked with Blue Morpho-themed items. Visitors are welcome to bring a hand-held camera to capture these butterflies in action, but no tripods, monopods or external flash equipment is allowed. Due to increased attendance during March, strollers are not allowed inside.

Throughout the month of April, Spring Fling will be held on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Butterfly House will celebrate the
