Lee’s Home Center is a prime example of how important “changing with the times” is to a business in the age of the internet and Smart Phones. “We used to compete

within a 10 mile radius – now we compete with the world,” said Lee Vogel, store manager, “and we have learned how to adapt to stay profitable.”

The key ingredient to their success, though, is founder Leroy Vogel’s keen sense of business and today his five children

are continuing that family tradition. With large shoes to fill, store manager and eldest son Lee Vogel said diversification has been the lifesaver for them as they service both com-mercial and residential.

“Also, we are able to help a customer who might have a unique situation. For Example; We just special ordered bathroom stall dividers for Zion Evangelical Church for the new bath-rooms at the Church Park in Millstadt – if it’s within the realm of possibility we will cer-tainly look into it,” he said. “Our competitors don’t provide that kind of specialized service.”

After Leroy's passing in 2004, 5 of his 7 children work together to carry on the family business:Lee vogel – Store ManagerMary Braner – Building Materials ManagerBarb Green – Office ManagerDan vogel – IT and PurchasingDonna Crabtree – Lawn and Garden, and Seasonal Manager

Leroy Vogel worked through high school for Ray Payne at the local hardware store on Jefferson Street in Millstadt until 1958 when the opportunity arose to purchase the store from Payne which is when the name became Lee’s Hardware.

At the time there were two lumber yards and two hardware stores in the area. “He imme-diately realized he had to differentiate his store from the others in order to survive,” said Lee Vogel. With that in mind he decided to join the nationwide True Value buying group in an effort to offer a wider selection of products and services.

“This was such a smart move because of the diversity it offered the business as well as better pricing,” Vogel said. And in 1975, he also thought it would be even better for his business if he could combine forces with Kommunity Lumber which was located where the present location sits on South Illinois in Millstadt. They merged into a new building there in 1988 thus fulfilling a vision to become a complete “home center” where a cus-tomer can find everything they need to complete their entire building project.

Again knowing that their business was growing and changing, the family decided in 2004 to leave True Value – “a very difficult decision” – and affiliate with Do It Best which provides a better selection of lumber and building material as well as all other categories.

These adaptations have provided them the ammunition to withstand the onslaught of the “big box” stores. “Yes, these new stores have changed things for us,” Vogel said. “It has helped us focus on developing a stronger relationship with each customer. We eventu-ally get to know our customers and what their needs are and consequently we become acquainted with their home.

“I love when someone comes in with a can-do attitude and a shopping list. We lend a hand on the selection of products to get that project done,” he continued. “I had a lady call me on the phone once and said, ‘Here listen.’ And she turned on the disposal that she had just installed herself! She said, ‘I will be your customer forever.’ That is exactly our mission: To be here to help with anyone’s needs.”

Lee’s Home Center is also proud to say that every penny spent at their business stays here in the community and they support many organizations in Millstadt, and surrounding areas.

Lee's is keeping in sync with technology. Customers can specify Invoices and Statements to be E-mailed, along with Facebook and On-Line Shopping from their Web-Site. They have five delivery trucks, a boom crane truck and three drive throughs for customer con-venience no matter how small or large the order. Services offered: carpet cleaner rentals, computer paint matching, computer kitchen and bath design, copy and fax service, delivery and boom service, gift cards, glass cutting, screen and window repair, key cutting and lock rekeying, knife and scissor sharpening, pipe cutting and pipe threading, special orders, propane tank exchange, 3-D deck and garage plans and custom closet designs.

Lee’s home Center is located at 1 South Illinois in Millstadt; (877) 476-1760; www.leeshomecenter.com.

Finally! an affordable Solutionan affordable Solution

To Uneven ConcreteCommunities everywhere are plagued with uneven

sidewalks and steps, sunken patios and driveways. These are more than inconveniences - they represent

dangerous and unsightly conditions. Every property owner – residential and commercial - is looking for cost effective solutions to these vital home repairs.

Some individuals have had good ideas for dealing with these problems - Grover Miller had a great one. Over 15 years ago, Miller developed his first self-contained pumping unit to level concrete. Drawing on his 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Grover saw the need for a cost effec-tive method of raising and saving concrete, and developed a unique piece of equipment to fill that need.

(1) By drilling a small hole in an existing slab (side-

walk blocks to airport runways!), (2) an envi-ronmentally safe slurry

is hydraulically injected under the existing slab and

lifts it to its original position (3) and sealed: Quick, cost effective and guaranteed.

In 1992, Mr. Miller developed the adjustable piston and screener for the self-contained leveling unit, for which pat-ents have been obtained. These, along with other innovations have allowed A-1 Concrete Leveling to provide a highly effi-cient and cost effective method for leveling concrete surfaces compared to traditional “tear-out” and “repour” methods.

Six years ago, Karen and Tony Goforth of Collinsville discov-ered A-1 Concrete and this innovative technology, and joined forces with the company. “Our product combined with cus-tomer service gives a great competitive edge in the market,” Tony Goforth said.

The Differences Between Mud Jacking, Slab Jacking and A-1 ConcreteGenerally in mud jacking or slab jacking, a portable pump is carried or wheeled to the location of the area to be raised. A hole of up to 3-inches in diameter is drilled that can weaken the area and allow too much material to flow too quickly causing cracking of slabs.

Modern concrete leveling techniques at A-1 Concrete utilizes a 1-inch hole to avoid weakening the slab or raising the slabs too quickly. A pulverized limestone that is denser than soil is used at a slower, safe pace.

Benefits of Concrete Leveling Over Replacement• The process is completed and ready for use in a

matter of hours.• Landscaping and adjacent areas are usually

unaffected!• Concrete leveling reduces job time, energy

utilization and environmental problems associated with concrete demolition and disposal.

• Leveling usually represents a savings of 50 to 75% over replacement.

A-1 Concrete in Collinsville is fully insured, licensed and bonded. Call (618) 344-9923 today for a free estimate or email [email protected].

Fretting over a lawn and garden ravaged by this summer’s extreme drought and record-breaking heat? Homeowners and gardeners need not stress over barren, brown yards and withered owers and vegetables. Fall is the perfect time to top

dress your lawn and serve your garden a heaping helping of all-natural, nutrient-rich compost – Mother Nature’s cure for ailing greenery.

An annual, post-summer application of organic compost promotes healthy root and soil structure, strengthening lawns and gardens for better endurance and vegetation production next year. It works by:

Top dressing is applying compost over the surface of a lawn. For best results, top dress your lawn and garden with Seal of Testing Assurance (STA)-certied compost, which boosts the water retention capacity of soil by up to 30 percent. Application is quick and easy with top dressing equipment – available for rent at St. Louis Com-posting.

Seeding lawns in the fall works well because it allows for grass to establish strong roots while the weather is cool – giving it the best chance to survive future droughts and high heat.

Using compost will help revive lawns and gardens weakened during the summer’s intense temperatures and dry spells. Its benets will be most noticeable by the end of the rst growing season. Top dressing in the fall is the key rst step to a greener and healthier lawn and garden next spring. Help your lawn and garden survive the scorching summer of 2012. Give them a revitalizing application of compost.

CRACKED FOUNDATION?The St. Louis Regional Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program has gained a new member with an impressive ability to help homeown-ers save energy and money. The company, called Dr. Energy Saver®, uses

a whole-home approach that results in great improvements in comfort to go along with energy savings.

The whole-home approach starts with an energy audit that considers the home as a system. Rather than improving a home’s energy efficiency by sim-ply upgrading the heating and cooling system or the insulation, Dr. Energy Saver looks at how those individual components work together to affect both comfort and energy use.

Brian Stewart, Dr. Energy Saver General Manager said, “We often work with homeowners who have spent their hard-earned dollars to upgrade one part of their home and then failed to realize the energy savings and increased comfort they expected.”

He continued, “Sometimes people assume they can reduce their monthly utili-ty bills by replacing their windows or by adding insulation. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they aren’t. Our goal is to eliminate the guessing by testing first, considering how one improvement affects another, then making the most cost effective set of improvements to achieve what the homeowner wants.”Stewart said that seeing the huge improvements in comfort that result from the whole-home approach is the most exciting part.

“Oftentimes, a home with energy efficiency problems also has comfort problems such as one part of the home that is difficult to heat and cool or problems with indoor air quality. By carefully diagnosing and treating the underlying energy problems, we can often take care of the comfort symptoms as well,” said Stewart.

Home Performance with ENERGY STAR offers a comprehensive approach to home improvement, remodeling, and renovation that will make your home more efficient and reduce energy costs, while improving indoor air quality and creating a more comfortable, healthier home. At the same time, you’ll be helping to protect the environment through energy conservation.

Dr. Energy Saver St. Louis serves customers in the Greater St. Louis area on both sides of the river includ-ing St. Louis, Chesterfield,

St. Charles, Belleville, O’Fallon, Collinsville, Edwardsville and all surrounding areas. The company offers a complete range of whole-home services such as home energy audits, insulation, and heating and cooling systems. On a scorching hot afternoon just two days before Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics, Craig Virgin - the only American-born athlete to qualify three times for the Olympic Games in the 10,000 meter track event and win the World

Cross Country Championship not just once but twice - paused for a moment to reflect on his memorable life and career.

“I had really lived a full life by the age of 30,” he said. Raised on the family farm in Leba-non, herding cattle in the pasture and driving a tractor in the fields, he amazingly didn’t even start running competitively until his freshman year at Lebanon High School. In fact, “while I was growing up in the '60s, I just wanted to be a second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals! I never followed any running competitions.”

But that very experience of working on the farm is what he thinks helped shape him into the unmatched U.S. distance runner at the high school, collegiate, national and interna-tional levels. “We would often just drive the truck or tractor out to the field, park it and then jog back to our home base in work clothes and boots. My dad had run a little in high school and gave me enough instruction that I got the gist,” Virgin said. “Running really fit me to a tee.”

What makes Virgin’s story even more spectacular is his childhood congenital urological disease that caused him to survive on oral and intravenous antibiotics from the age of 5 to 13 before having recommended reconstructive surgery in 8th grade during Thanks-giving week that was literally life saving. Right before the surgery he had gone out for basketball under rookie Coach Richard Neal. “I was a starter and all-star in baseball, but not very good in basketball," Virgin said. "I knew I might be cut. So, I made up my mind to win every running drill we had. I figured he couldn't cut me if I showed that much effort."

Duly impressed with his running times, Coach Neal brought Virgin to the attention of the coach of Lebanon High School Cross Country Coach Hank Feldt, who happens to still be at Lebanon High School in his 52nd year of coaching.

His first team workout without much training was a five-mile run on the day after his 14th birthday – he lapped the entire varsity team and won the race. "Five days later I was beating the best kids on the team as a freshman, but I woke up so stiff and sore that I quit cross country and went back to baseball,” he said.

He soon discovered there was a star senior, Mark Dellinger, at second base whom he didn't think he could beat out. So he thought, “I’ll give this running thing a try this fall and go back to baseball in the spring.” (At that time they played fall and spring baseball.)

“I won the first race I ever entered. It was against Mascoutah High School and their Cross Country Coach Jim Presson whose wife taught at Lebanon Grade School. Mascoutah was also Coach Feldt's home town. Halfway through the race, Mascoutah’s projected all-state runner, Steve Watson, got out to an early lead but had to make a ‘pit stop’ during the race,” Virgin said with a chuckle. “I got out slow due to my first and only side stitch in my career. I had to play catch-up the whole race. When I finally passed the last runner in front of me with a half mile to go someone yelled that I was in first place. When I found out what had happened to Watson, I learned then to always 'take care of business' before stepping up to the start line because you can't fool Mother Nature!” And from there on no one could ever catch up with him: His accomplishments through high school and then at the University of Illinois are what makes a person into a legend. See sidebar on page 19.

How does he keep his modest approach to his wondrous achievements? “I was too busy doing it to totally appreciate it then,” Virgin said, wistfully. “I just kept going. But I think growing up on the farm kept things in perspective for me. I would come home with an-other victory and head immediately out to get the farm work done. The cows didn't care what I had accomplished!"

His parents, Lorna Lee and Vernon Virgin, “raised us with good Christian and common sense values,” he continued. “I loved my siblings (two sisters and a brother) and farm life – it was an excellent place to keep a good sense of balance.”

The Lebanon countryside was also a perfect place to train. Having run the nearby roads for over four decades – rolling hills to the north and west, and flat roads to the south and east as well as Locust Hills Golf Course - he figures people may still “see my ghost running out there long after I'm gone!"

Involved in the community, he has worked to bring international recognition to Illinois with projects like raising the funds to build a top-notch track and field stadium at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. “The Olympic Festival committee was looking at Wash U because we didn’t have a sufficient track over here,” he said. “So in two years our commit-tee raised the money and brought the Olympic Festival to Southern Illinois in 1994” where Jackie Joyner-Kersee made a triumphant return to her hometown fans.

Virgin retired from international racing in 1992 after 23 years of competitive running. His right kidney was finally removed in 1994. A note that some may not recall is his survival of a near fatal head-on car collision with a wrong way driver in 1997 which prematurely ended his competitive masters running career. He also fell on black ice at the back door of his office in 2004 and completely ruptured, and detached, his right quadriceps tendon from the kneecap. Virgin has undergone a total of 15 surgeries and rehabs since those incidents, but works out by jogging and cross training on the bike and elliptical ma-chines. He travels quite a bit working for his own company, Front Runner, as a company spokesperson, freelance broadcaster, coach/consultant and motivational speaker among other things. While his siblings live in such “vacation” spots as Orlando, Monterey and San Francisco, Virgin hangs his hat in Lebanon – “my home base” - close to his parents.

Putting a giant exclamation mark on his storied career was his recent induction into the USA National Track and Field Hall of Fame as well as the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. He had been inducted into the U.S. National Distance Running Hall of Fame 10 years earlier.

“I feel like I have accomplished more than most and less than a few,” he said during his induction ceremony. “I guess I can live with that!”

Lose 15-25 pounds in one month!Ask us about customizing a CoolSculpt &

Weight Management Program for You!

Farewell Stubborn Fat! Say hello to healthy! CoolSculpting and Weight Management for Unbeatable Results

Au Revoir! Goodbye! Adios! See ya! In any language, say loud and proud “Goodbye fat!” NOW it’s time to get serious and say “HELLO” to the healthy lifestyle you’ve wanted for so long! Understandably, losing

weight can be extremely overwhelming so choose a program that gives you every thing you need to ensure safe, effective weight loss PLUS continued support to help you maintain your weight loss.

Weight loss products boasting high-productivity ingredients, like HCG are everywhere – on TV, online and in grocery stores. It is important to consider the quality of the product you are purchasing. A physician-super-

vised program ensures more efficacy and safety of the product. Always confirm you are getting a pharmaceu-tical-grade HCG, which can only be prescribed by a medical physician, to aid in your weight management.

Patients may find that other health issues such as sleep patterns, skin and mood have been known to improve through appropriate use of HCG. Additionally, patients may experience a stabilization of blood sugar, blood pressure

and cholesterol, fewer arthritis symptoms, an improvement in psoriasis symptoms, peptic ulcers and hair loss.

Weekly appointments truly establish patient accountability and therefore better results.

If you can squeeze it, then we can freeze it with CoolSculpting. Perhaps you have achieved your weight loss goals and now you need a way to trim those little bulges. Technology to sculpt, tone and firm is on the rise. Treatments, such as CoolSculpt Body Contouring, offer great results with little or no downtime,

unlike liposuction surgeries which involve incisions and weeks of post treatment care. The CoolSculpt ap-plicator is applied to the desired treatment area (such as inner thighs, back fat and muffin tops) and

actually freezes that stubborn fat. The intense cold from the one-hour treatment kills those cells, and then your body naturally eliminates them over time. Due to the gradual changes from this procedure, best results are seen two to four months after a two-treatment process. Patients may experience slight cramping, bruis-

ing or tenderness, but they can resume a regular lifestyle immediately following the procedure.

Avoid ridiculous claims. When it comes to weight loss, there is no healthy “quick fix”; however, by main-taining a balanced diet and exercise routine, the success you accomplish is yours for the future!

To learn more about CoolSculpting and Weight Management Programs at Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness Center, call (618) 288-9117. Complimentary consultations are available.

From STRUGGLING...1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of

undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child...

...to SUCCESS!ELIMINATE DOUBT!

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children

who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Unger Eye Care

(618) 667-2020www.readingandvision.com

As children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn.

One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems: “60 percent of kids with learning disabilities have undi-agnosed vision problems,” according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association.

Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening that everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (track-ing) and be able to see for a long period of time.

August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that par-ents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties:

• headaches when reading• slow or incomplete copy work from board or

paper• avoidance of reading• poor reading comprehension• frequent loss of place while reading• complains words move on the page

• short attention span• smart in everything but school• labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic• working below potential

Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist.

A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustain-ing clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills.

According to Dr. Thomas Unger, of Troy, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed.”

For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.ungereyecare.com.

The OlympicsReflecting on the Olympics, Virgin said, “one of the proud-est things you can do is represent your country. You put that uniform on with USA across the chest and it's simply a special feeling," he smiled and nodded. Qualifying for the Olympics in 1976, 1980 and 1984, he said that “discouraged and devastated are two words you could use to describe how I felt when the U.S. boycotted the 1980 games. But I didn’t let it get me down – on July 1 of that year I ran the fastest time in the world for 10,000 meters at a track meet in Paris. It was about 10 days before the Olympic Games opened. I was also the World Cross Country Champion that year and again in 1981.”

While at the Olympics, he said you make friends and some relationships continue to this day but “from the start to the finish line, it was every man for himself.” There were rivalries, some competitors you liked and some you didn’t: Everyone there is at the top of their game and everyone wants to win. “I miss those days…I wish I was in London right now getting ready for the 10,000 meter track race or the marathon!”

The most fun aspect of the whole two weeks are the Opening Ceremonies. “There’s this tremendous sense of anticipation and excitement – like Christmas Eve,” Virgin said. “Nobody’s lost - everyone knows they have a chance to win – it’s very motivational and totally mind blowing.” Conversely, Closing Ceremonies are “kind of sad, like the ‘party’s over.’ In reality, only a few actually win a medal. So I would advise any young athlete to enjoy the pre-games' festivities but always get your prescribed workouts in and hopefully your competitions come early,” he said.

“Also, don’t get overly emotional and eat how you usually do – nothing out of the ordinary – and get to know your teammates. Really soak it all in – take a mental snapshot - there are no guarantees you’ll be back. Next to the birth of your child or maybe marriage, participating in the Olym-pics for your country, state and family will be one of the most special moments in life,” Virgin said.

“And finally, leave everything you’ve got on the field – have absolutely no regrets!”
