Happy New Year Marketplace Readers!

Thank you so kindly for your support of the maga-zine now in its 21st year - let's have a resounding "Cheers" to that good news!

Marketplace was founded by a young mother and wife - and smart marketing entrepreneur - who moved to O'Fallon in 1995 not knowing too much about the community. After conducting some re-search of her own, she found a niche in the area for a publication featuring local retailers in Madison and St. Clair counties. Today, the magazine reaches 50,000 homeowners in Madison, St. Clair and Mon-roe counties, and is available in 12 grocery stores and several Hallmarks in the area.

While the magazine transitioned to a new publisher in 2009, the original mission is still the heart and soul of the content: To offer a local resource that encourages shopping in the Metro East not only for convenience, but to help strengthen the economy thus giving back to the community at the same time. It's also important to me personally to help promote the non-profits in the area that need our support. I

hope you find those features inspiring and if there is an organization you would like to see featured, please let me know. In addition, the updated calen-dar is open to all applicable events, concerts or ac-tivities throughout the area - just email them to me.

This issue's cover photo, by local photographer and good friend Gary Luttrell, features Tyler Tschannen's Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Company that makes fresh chocolates every day, and yes, locally!

"We also want to encourage shopping local not only for a higher quality product, but to help the founda-tion of the community, which is our local economy," Tschannen said. "Because local businesses help grow the economic base of the community, the dollars you spend have a domino effect into the schools, churches, parks, non-profits and more."

Now in his fourth year of business with locations in Shiloh, Edwardsville and Chesterfield, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate is thriving with regular custom-ers and he is, of course, looking forward to the big-gest holiday of the year - Valentine's Day!

Topping the list of customer favorites are chocolate covered strawberries, white and dark chocolate raspberry truffles, and milk chocolate or white chocolate red velvet cake truffles. “The fruit-inspired chocolates are becoming very popular, too,” Tschannen said. “We have chocolate-covered pine-apple, blackberries and cherries, plus raspberries and strawberries. Please stop in and don't forget your coupons here in Marketplace."

Please peruse the magazine and take note of the many local retailers, businesses, agencies and health-care facilities who work hard to offer the best products and services available - most of you likely know these business owners as your neighbors and friends. There are some great discounts and coupons available throughout the magazine as well.

"Cheers" to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2016!- Lisa R. Adams

C elebrating their 15th Anniversary of business, Carpet Care Plus owners Robin and Larry McQueen cannot believe how fast the time has gone. When they first opened, Larry McQueen was fresh out of the Air Force after 20 years of service

and they “started the business with two portable carpet cleaning machines and one van.”

Today, they operate vans for commercial use machines and also two truck-mounted carpet cleaning systems complete with the latest technology for residential and upholstery cleaning. Combined with a staff of eight, including themselves, Carpet Care Plus not only meets the needs of their regular customers, but they are equipped for “short notice” appointments as well. They specialize in residential, commercial, area rug cleaning and upholstery cleaning.

Now located just east of downtown O’Fallon, McQueen said “the goal has always been to provide customers the most outstanding experience they have ever had” and to do so the entire cleaning staff has their Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). McQueen is also recognized by the Wools of New Zealand as a Wool Care Specialist. McQueen and his son, Joe, are the only Certified Master Rug Cleaners in the Metro East.

As office manager, Robin McQueen is also the on-site, Oriental rug repair specialist. She can repair damaged, handmade rugs and restore them back to their original beauty so they will last for generations to come.

Another large part of the business is the binding and serging of carpeting remnants. “With some alterations, we can make any size or shape of rug for your specific needs,” she said. “We’ve done this for homes, offices and even RVs. For example, if that 8-foot-by-10-foot you purchased is just a tad too big, or even if you want it to become a circle, we can bring it down to the exact size or shape needed. We also provide specific backing and padding for your rugs.”

Hand-knotted rugs- whether a sentimental, family heirloom or a new investment, will last generations with proper care and professional cleaning. Carpet Care Plus is pleased to offer Metro East residents a four-step process for cleaning area rugs. When Carpet Care Plus first views an area rug to clean, they inspect it for many things including where in the world it was made and if it needs repairing in addition to cleaning. They boast the only dedicated area rug cleaning plant in the Metro East.

“First of all, every rug has a story,” Larry McQueen said. “We have attended many Rug Seminars, trained and shared ideas with the best authorities, world-wide. We have the

knowledge and experience to identify exactly where a rug has originated and it age. This information is essential to begin the cleaning process. Handmade rugs can cost thousands of dollars and if we can identify where it came from, we can ensure the proper cleaning procedures for each specific type of rug.”

The staff will access the problem areas of the rug and then proceed with cleaning, which includes dusting, washing and drying and finishing. All of this cannot take place in the home where they couldn’t possibly achieve the

best results as they do in their O’Fallon rug plant. They offer pickup and delivery you can drop it off at their business location.

To celebrate 15 years of business, Carpet Care Plus is offering customers a “scratch off” savings at the point of sale while in the home. Customers will be handed a scratch off card and receive the savings that is revealed – everyone will win! Prizes range all the way up from spotters, money off to even a FREE cleaning that day!

Carpet Care Plus is located in O’Fallon at 121 Behrens Dr., Suite 1. Call (618) 632-0883 to schedule an appointment or a free estimate. Simply put, energy deregulation is about giving the consumer and business owner a choice, and ultimately saving money on power consumption. The easiest example of deregulation and regulation is on the actual power bill. Take a look at 1. the delivery charge and 2. the supply charge.

Delivery is regulated because the cost of replacing the actual infrastructure such as poles, lines, etc. at this point in time would be astronomical. However, that is not the case with supply. Supply of the commodity can come from any energy com-pany registered in the state as an REP (registered electric supplier).

Energy deregulation brings competition into the market which generally drives prices down. This can bring a significant amount of savings for the consumer but literally save thousands of dollars for business owners.

“Since most suppliers pick up the fee, it doesn’t cost anything to save money,” said Mike Grimes, president of commercial Energy Consultants. “For example, I worked with a bar owner who was already in arrears with the incumbent utility. She was facing summer pricing (20% higher) and was about to close the bar. Solution: de-regulate. The owner picked up a fixed price 30% lower than the incumbent utilities and was able to keep the bar open.”

“Customers are free to work directly with a supplier by doing their own research. But the problem here is that there are 40-plus suppliers,” Grimes said. “Are you going

to interview them all to find the best supplier? Do you have the time? Are you well versed in matters of energy deregulation? Be careful, some suppliers take advantage of the uninformed or the chosen company might not be financially stable.”

“I recommend using a consultant such as Commercial Energy Consultants (CEC) that has been working with energy deregulation for the last seven years. We have over 500 million kilowatts under contract and over 2,200 customers,” he continued. “Use a consultant because we have the knowledge to garner the lowest bid from all available suppliers. The consultant regularly contacts suppliers, asks for bids on the consumer’s particular residential/commercial need and delivers the lowest bid. This process takes the hassle out of working directly with the supplier.”

Recently Grimes met with a busy school administrator who had been given the task to deregulate. She had received a couple solicitations in the mail and talked to one supplier but realized there are more than 40 suppliers approved by her state.

“She called my company and hired us to find the supplier. It took about a week and didn’t cost the school a penny. CEC delivered the low bid and saved the school thou-sands of dollars each month,” he said.

For more information, please call Mike Grimes at Commercial Energy Consultants at (877) 212-1400 or email [email protected].

D estination weddings have become increasingly popular in the last 10 years as couples find plenty of wonderful advantages to com-bining the wedding and the honeymoon into an all-encompass-

ing, dreamy week. To meet the demands of these weddings away from home, Julia Crunk, owner of Ambassador Travel, and her staff have become experts at arranging all the details for the couple and their guests, making the process much simpler and stress-free.

In addition, since the costs of a traditional wedding have risen considerably, the destination wedding has become a more economical choice for couples inter-ested in sharing their day with a few select guests. Imagine saying “I do” on a white-sand beach with a handful of your closest friends looking on. If a destina-tion wedding sounds like your kind of paradise, Ambassador is the place to start.

Offering convenient day and evening hours, Crunk will sit with the couple in the quiet of her office and discuss different ideas. "We recommend reserving as soon as possible," she said. "Then, we monitor your booking and if your price goes down, and you have purchased insurance, you get the lower rate." Ambassador also offers a no-fee payment plan so payments can be made up until the balance needs to be paid, thus making it more feasible to reserve early and lock in the air and resort you want!

Discounts are given as well for destination wedding friends/families (mini-mum five rooms, 10 guests) who want to travel with the bride and groom to celebrate the wedding. With a wide variety of destination resorts available combined with over 40 years of experience, Crunk personally knows the resorts that offer free or discounted weddings, and the rules and regulations necessary for the perfect event.

In fact, check out their list of expertise: Certified Sandals Specialist, AM Resorts (Secrets, Now, Dreams and Breathless) Master Agent, Riu Resort Spe-cialist, Karisma Resort Gourmet Inclusive Honeymoon Specialist (El Dorado Royale and Azul resorts), Iberostar Grand Specialist and a Disney Ear Marked Agency. They also win awards every year for outstanding sales with Apple and Funjet Vacations.

Besides Crunk, there are several travel professionals to assist you, Karen Fur-low of Belleville since1998 and Toni Crunk since 2014. Crunk purchased the agency in 2009.

Honeymoon RegistryOf course, the destination and honeymoon locations are always the first deci-sions to make when getting married and with that comes the fun of register-ing at various businesses for gift giving. Think how fantastic it would be to register the honeymoon? Once honeymoon plans are finalized, Ambassador Travel offers an opportunity to register the honeymoon online where friends and family can purchase honeymoon certificates as their gift! These certifi-cates can be used to puchase, tours, non-stop transfers, romantic dinners on the beach, or just to help pay on the balance.

Call (618) 234-1046, www.4ambassadortravel.com, today to discover the perfect destination wedding and/or honeymoon. Ambassador Travel also provides the best in Family Beach Vacations/Family Fun Vacations/Family Resort Travel and Adults-only Vacations.

St. Paul’s Senior CommunityA Tradition of Faith and Caring

Leaving Your Legacy at St. Paul’s Senior CommunityMany times we want to preserve the memory of a loved one; to express gratitude for a service well-performed; to demonstrate deep-felt humanitarian concerns; to support a tradition of excellence in senior care. Private philanthropy is the foundation of every charitable endeavor. Considering today’s economy and the increased complexity of our nation’s tax structure, it is more important than ever to plan your charitable gifts carefully. As you review your assets and explore the different ways to give, St. Paul’s Senior Community Foundation would welcome the opportunity to assist you and your advisors with information about planned-gift opportunities. 1) Gifts of Cash: A gift of cash is the simplest and most direct way to contributetoourfoundation.Youmaydesignateyourgiftforaspecific purpose, or you may choose to leave your gift undesignated to be used in the area of the greatest need. 2) Gifts of Appreciated Securities: An alternative to a gift of cash that deserves careful consideration is a gift of appreciated securities that you have ownedformorethanoneyear.Substantiallygreatertaxbenefits result because you avoid capital-gain tax. 3) Gifts of Life Insurance Policies: Life insurance is an asset that is frequently overlooked. If the original need for which a policy was purchases no longer exists, a gift of this asset can be very rewarding, particularly if the policy is fully paid. These are just a few ways that you can help make a difference while preserving the memory of a loved one at St. Paul’s Senior Community. In addition, please ask about our sponsorship opportunities in the building.

For more information, please feel free to contact Outreach Director Debra Pierce at (618) 509-4747.

Memorial Hospital’s

Heart and Vascular

Center of Excellence is

using the Ocelot catheter system to

help patients facing Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD),

an under-recognized epidemic that affects between 8 and 12 million adults in the U.S. and 202 million people globally. PAD is caused by a build-up of plaque in the arteries that blocks blood flow to the legs and feet. Often dismissed as normal signs of aging, symptoms of PAD include painful cramping, numbness or discoloration in the legs or feet. PAD can become so severe and difficult to penetrate with traditional catheters that patients and physicians (unaware of advanced treatment options like Ocelot) often resort to undergoing extremely invasive bypass surgeries that result in even higher health risks and lengthy, painful recoveries. Treating PAD costs hospitals $102 billion to $253 billion each year, largely due to late detection, which increases the need for invasive treatment options, such as bypass surgery.

In severe cases, patients often face amputation, the worst-case scenario associated with PAD. Each year, more than 100,000 amputations occur in the United States. The Ocelot catheter can help to prevent leg amputations and bypass surgeries through a minimally invasive procedure that sends most patients home within a few days. The Ocelot catheter, supported by the Lightbox console, allows physicians, for the first time ever, to see from inside the artery during a procedure, using optical coher-ence tomography, or OCT to navigate through the vessel. In the past, physicians have had to rely solely on X-ray as well as touch and/or feel to guide catheters through complicated blockages. With Ocelot’s recently developed lumivascular approach (lumi = light, vascular = artery), physicians can more accurately navigate through CTOs thanks to the OCT images they see from inside the artery. Ocelot is the first-ever CTO crossing catheter that uses OCT technology to access exact regions of the peripheral vasculature where the blockages occur, while simultane-ously providing physicians in the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence at Memorial with visualization for real-time navigation during an intervention. Dr. Hans Moosa, Dr. Richard Coats and Dr. Patrick Neville, all vascular surgeons and members of Me-morial Medical Group, are using Ocelot. The Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence at Memorial encourages those that are experiencing any of the above symptoms to ask their doctor about their risks for PAD, as early detection is the key to saving limbs.

For parents whose child has just been diagnosed with cancer, the world is suddenly a frightening place. Find-ing the right doctors, hospitals and treatment protocols while worrying about a very sick child is very stressful. On top of the emotional burden, the logistical and fi-nancial problems of accessing and paying for treatment can leave parents feeling completely overwhelmed.

The National Children's Cancer Society (NCCS), founded here in the Metro East, understands the emo-tional and financial strain on parents who are caring for a child battling pediatric cancer, and provides support programs and services to ease some of their burdens.

The NCCS sponsors numerous services not only for par-ents but for caregivers as well. Its Family Support Pro-gram provides a case manager who can walk alongside families during the child's cancer journey. To help ease the economic burden of pediatric cancer, NCCS offers financial assistance with transportation and lodging costs associated with treatment and hospital stays. Ad-ditionally, the NCCS has an emergency assistance fund for families whose child has been hospitalized away from home an extended time. There are also education-al resources, including publications, videos and links to conferences, on the NCCS website thenccs.org. You can also visit the NCCS at Facebook.com/thenccs.

Needs Of Parents Are A Priority At NCCS

Oliver’s Story Oliver is a sweet 3-year-old boy who has been battling retinoblas-toma, a rare type of pediatric cancer that affects the eye, for the last year.

“We needed to get him to a treatment center quickly,” said his mom, Mallorie, once he was diagnosed. “Only three centers in the country were qualified to treat retinoblastoma, all of which were a significant distance from our home in Charlotte, NC.” The retinoblastoma team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City was able to get Oliver in within two days and Oliver began treatment immediately. “We began a mission to not only save Oliver's life but to save his eye," she said.

Oliver and his family traveled to New York every three-four weeks for treatment, which then increased to weekly visits. The NCCS's support allowed Oliver to receive the treatment he required. “The assistance with transportation has helped to relieve the major financial strain we encountered with the treatment plan Oliver needed,” Mallorie said. “It is comforting to know that someone is there who cares and understands what we are going through."

Oliver has responded very well to treatment; the main tumor is gone and he has regained vision in his affected eye. Thanks to the NCCS, Oliver’s parents were able to focus on the well-being of their child.

Eagle Season Is In Full SwingAll eyes are on the sky as the Alton region enjoys the annual winter migration of the American Bald Eagle. Every January, experts anticipate as many as 1,000 bald eagles migrate to the area reclaiming their winter nests along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway.

Every day visitors can travel along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway to visit the “Eagle Watching Hot Spots” featured in the 2015 Eagle Watcher’s Guide. Again this year, the Alton Eagle Watching App will guide visitors during their eagle watching adventure. The free app, available for iPhone and Android, will lead visitors to the eagle watching hot spots, provide information on upcoming events and festivals, allow visitors to share their eagle photos, offer deals from restaurants and shops, as well as a list of the shops, restaurants, attractions and lodging found along the byway.

Annually, the opportunities for eagle watching con-tinue to grow in the Alton region. Visitors can head out to view the eagles on their own, or they can take part in some of the traditional eagle watching events in the region, including eagle meet and greets, eagle watching tours and live bird demonstrations. Events take place nearly every weekend and throughout the week, from January through March. Plus, most of the events in the region are free of charge. A full list of events can be found online at www.VisitAlton.com/Seasons/Eagle and in the Eagle Watcher’s Guide.

For visitors wishing to make eagle watching a winter getaway, there are numerous eagle packages and specials available at hotels and bed and breakfast inns in Alton, Grafton and Elsah. Alton is the place to be for the best eagle events and the largest con-centration of American Bald Eagles in the state of Illinois.

For the latest eagle watching updates or to receive your free Eagle Watcher’s Guide, call 1-800-ALTON-IL or go to www.VisitAlton.com.
