Earthquake monitoring model 100 points possible

Choose one of the following three models to make and describe. The project is byindividual only, no groups. The projects are not worth the same points because theyare not all the same difficulty but you may choose which ever one you want to do and

think you can do well. Each one should be a working model in that it can be usedto demonstrate the way a real one would work but obviously would not be preciseenough to do the real thing. Each project should include a short description (1-2paragraphs) of how it works and what it is used for. Be creative and use materialsyou already have.

Seismograph (p. 191) The model should include the basic parts labeled in thepicture and have a pen or pencil that contacts the paper as the drum turns (by hand)but does not have to leave an easy to read line.Grading: 100 pts. max. (A+)

Includes wire, weight, pen and rotating drum with paper 40 pts.

Well constructed; (can be demonstrated without falling apart or needing extrasupport) 20 pts.

Workable; pen moves freely and contacts the paper as the drum is turned byhand 20 pts.

Includes a short description of how a seismograph works 10 pts.

Includes a short description of what seismographs are used for 10 pts.

Tiltmeter(p. 193) The model should include the basic parts show in the picture andbe mounted on a board so that it can be tipped for demonstration purposes withoutbreaking. Water should flow from one container to the other without leaking.Grading 80 pts. max. (B-)

Includes parts shown in picture and mounted on a board 30 pts. Well constructed (can be demonstrated without breaking or leaking) 20 pts.

Workable: water moves freely back and forth when tipped slightly 10 pts.

Includes a short description of how a tiltmeter works 10 pts.

Includes a short description of what a tiltmeter is used for 10 pts.

Creep meter(p. 193) The model should include all the parts shown in the picturemounted on 2 separate boards that can slide past each other like the plates of theEarth for demonstration purposes. The string should move and be attached to aweight with a pointer to show movement on a scale.Grading: 90 pts. max. (A-)

Includes parts shown in picture and mounted on 2 boards that slide past eachother 30 pts.

Well constructed (can be demonstrated without breaking) 20 pts.

Workable: moves freely back and forth and string moves up and down 20 pts.

Includes a short description of how a creep meter works 10 pts.

Includes a short description of what a creep meter is used for 10 pts.
