SEARCHLIGHT

Modern World War II Coastal Artillery Searchlight, Bawdsey, constructed

sometime between July 1940 and October 1945. The searchlight

would have functioned as part of the coastal battery to the north. By

June1996 the cliff has been eroded and the structure has collapsed

on to the beach.

EMPLACEMENT

Modern World War II strongpoint, Bawdsey. A number of trenches are visible

in 1940 along with a stretch of barbed wire obstruction. By 1945 a

strongpoint is evident, three side of the enclosure being barbed wire

whilst the eastern side is part of the stretch of beach scaffolding. The

barbed wire has been removed by July 1948, however a hexagonal

pillbox is visible this may have been camouflaged during the war.

Modern A military strongpoint of World War II date, it can be seen on aerial

photographs from 1945. It consists of a hexagonal pillbox, located on

the cliff edge with a length of barbed wire obstruction enclosing its

western side. Type 22 pillbox.

DEFENCE

Modern World War II pillbox and beach scaffolding, Bawdsey A circular

pillbox of World War II date can be seen in aerial photographs in a

small patch of woodland on the cliff edge at Bawdsey. A short stretch

of beach scaffolding can be seen below, at the base of cliff,

protecting the pillbox from attack from the beach.

emplacement. Later buildings may relate to the construction of the

‘diver’ battery.

at the opposite side of the road is a circular earthwork feature, which

could possibly be a single gun emplacement. Possible road block.

Modern World War II Heavy Anti-aircraft Artillery battery, Bawdsey.

Constructed at this location at some point between July 1944 and

October 1945. It consisted of four gun emplacements with a

substantial number of ancillary buildings, most of which appear to

be Nissen huts.

system of slit trenches can be seen at the edge of the cliff, north of

RAF Bawdsey in 1940, there may be structures within this area of

trenches. To the south of the area two buildings can be seen, these

presumably had a military purpose.

BLOODHOUND

MISSILE SITE

Modern Cold War ROTOR Station and Bloodhound Missile Site. The site of

Bawdsey radar station built in the early 1950s as part of the Rotor

programme to modernise the United Kingdom's radar defences.

Bawdsey closed in 1975 and in 1977 features of the Rotor station

were demolished, including plinths, towers and the Type 80

modulator building. In 1979 Bawdsey reopened as a Bloodhound

Mk2 surface to air (SAM) missile site. The missile section became

active in July 1979 as C Flight of 85 Squadron and remained

Undated Prehistoric or Roman cropmark settlement site consisting of

enclosures and trackways, Alderton parish. The site consists of three

main curvilinear trackways, forming a roughly triangular area in the

centre of the site. To the southern end of the site are a number of

partially visible curvilinear enclosures. Inside these enclosures there
