We had another great turn out in February, thank you to all that were able to attend!

Jay Carey, Senior Consultant at Axis Construc-tion Consulting presented a fun and very informa-tive presentation on building envelope failures & deficiencies. He spoke on the techniques used in building today, and how we can be more aware of the deficiencies that may be on our own homes, or even the projects that we all work on daily.

Special Thanks to Marie Borders, of Renew Systems, for providing us with our table centerpieces for February. For more information about this sponsor please visit their web site renewsystems4you.com. We are looking to still fill a few spots for the remainder of this year. If you are interested in sponsoring please contact Donna Topp at [email protected] or (925)454-8648

President’s MessageMichelle Windsor-Baughman at (925)872-6333 or by email at [email protected].

Lisa Winn, of Temp Home Services, announced the date and theme for this year’s CCNC. It will be held once again at the Hyatt in Sacramento on August 19th and 20th 2014. The theme this year is “Hitting A Home Run - Covering All The Bases”. More information along with Registration dates for returning vendors are coming soon, so be looking in your email.

Mark your calendars, the EBCA’s 12th annual golf tourna-ment will be held back at Eagle Vines Golf Course in the Napa Valley on Friday, July 25th. This year’s theme “A Minute To Win It” should be a fun one. The golf Committee will be get-ting together soon to discuss the available sponsorships and contacting last year’s vendors, too, for a first right of refusal. There are going to be some minor changes to the tournament rules this year as we have had a few incidents occur in the years past. Details will be coming soon!

East Bay Claims Association is already looking forward to our guest speaker in April. We will have Kurt Ahlich, Marketing Manager for Rimkus Consulting Group. Kurt is a Civil and Geo-technical Engineer out of the Rimkus Concord office. More about Mr. Ahlich and topic for the luncheon will be posted on our web site later in March. Please don’t forget to RSVP.

The February 12, 2014 luncheon meet-ing of the East Bay Claims Association was a strong gathering. A good number of claims personnel were on-hand to hear Jay Carey, of Axis Construction Consulting, as the guest speaker at Zio Fraedo’s, in Pleasant Hill.

Mr. Carey is a graduate of the Univer-sity of California at Davis. He holds two specialty contractor Licenses (C-36 Plumb-ing and C-54 Ceramic and Mosaic Tile), in addition to his General Contractor’s License. He owned his own Construction business working on new residential and commercial projects. He entered the consulting arena in 2001. He regularly provides expert deposi-tion, trial and arbitration testimony.

Mr. Cary gave extensive training on the methods for building decks and installing windows. The most important factor in order to avoid a law suit is to build your projects to the California State Codes, he stated.

He ran through some good tips, in conjunction with a great slide presentation showing windows & decks that leaked. The manufacturers of the products, he said, have their own guidelines of codes to follow. Exterior openings should be flashed to code. Always start building a window from the bot-tom, using overlay so the water will rundown the window & not leak. Use three flashing materials. Start at bottom, then the sides and top flashing after the window is in place.

He gave an example of a two million dollar home in San Francisco in which all the windows leaked because of improper installation. The installer clearly did not adhere to the California State codes.

Congrats Michele Waufle on wining the February 50/50 Raffle drawing!

He used had a case his firm had in Granite Bay that wound up with the court paying policy limits. There was so much water, he said, that the deck caved in. They found many examples of evidence that the homeowner knew there was an on-going leak, including: damage below decking where they had tried to cover with primer; an open path of water leaking through the soffit they tried to cover; and they pulled sheetrock and found nails put through the flashing and not sealed.

Mr. Carey’s presentation was informative and engaging. Please join us March 12th for our Continuing Education Seminar

Claim File Documentation, Recorded Interviews and Red Flags

Join the East Bay Claims Associa-tion Wednesday, March 12, 2014 for a special morning Continuing Education Class on “Recorded

Statements, Recorded Interviews, and Red Flags”. Guest presenter will be Julian J. Pardini, of the San Francisco law office of Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith.

Mr. Pardini gave a preview of this class at the October EBCA luncheon meeting this past year. Learn detailed information and useful guidelines for dealing with recorded statements and interviews. His knowledge and expertise were clear at his preview, even as he was only able to scratch the surface of the subject matter in that brief time.

Mr. Pardini serves as the Admin-istrative Partner of the San Francisco office of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, and also as Vice-Chair of the firm-wide Insurance Coverage and Bad

Faith practice group. His practice focuses primarily on insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, specializing in lawsuits arising from first party coverage disputes and suspicious losses. He also handles general liability and subrogation matters.

Julian holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley, 1982, and received his Juris Doctorate in 1986 from University of California Hastings College of Law. He will bring his significant trial experience to the fore, having tried cases in approxi-mately 20 counties throughout California.

There is no cost to attend this even, so invite your associates to join you, and gain some valuable tools for your professional position.

Please make a reservation with 2014 EBCA Secretary Michelle Wind-sor-Baughman at [email protected], or call: 925-872-6333.

ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIES, INC. AN-NOUNCES NEW SACRAMENTO AREA OFFICE & PROMOTION OF ROB MEYERS

Scott Tamayo, General Manager of Environmental Remedies, Inc., is pleased to announce the opening of the firm’s new regional office in Sacramento, as well as the promotion of Mr. Rob Meyers in the role of Regional Manager.

Environmental Remedies, Inc. specializes in the removal of asbes-tos, lead, and mold in both residential and commercial buildings. Now in its tenth year of operation, ERI has fine-tuned its business processes specifically for the insurance industry.

“Through prompt, high quality service, ERI has established long lasting relationships with numerous insurance adjusters, water mitiga-tion companies, and restoration contractors alike” Mr. Tamayo said. “As a result, ERI has doubled in size twice in the last 5 years.

“At the request of many of our current clients, ERI has broadened our service area to include Sacramento and its surrounding communi-ties,” he added. ERI plans to offer a high quality alternative for Sacra-mento’s abatement needs, just as it does in the Bay Area.

Rob Meyers was hired at ERI a year ago as Project Manager/Esti-mator, with the expansion into Sacramento in mind. He is in his 23rd year in this field, with a background in construction, water mitigation, and management already made him a very versatile asset for any company. His background, coupled with his tireless work ethic, his humorous, happy-go-lucky demeanor, and now his abatement experience, quickly demonstrated he was ready to lead ERI’s team into a new market.

Prior to his work at ERI, Rob was with Anderson Group Interna-tional in San Jose, CA for 5 years where he was the Sr. Project Manager/Mitigation Manager.

Rob possesses key certifications, including: IICRC: Applied Microbial Remediation, Commercial Drying Specialist, Fire & Smoke Restoration among others. He is also a Certified Infrared Thermographer; possesses his 40 Hour supervisors asbestos license; an Asbestos Building Inspector’s license and Bloodborne Pathogen Remediation Certification.

Originally from New England, Rob grew up on a farm in New Hampshire. He moved to Northern California in 1992, and has raised his two children, Jacob and Joshua, here. Jacob Meyers, Rob’s oldest son, is also an estimator at Environmental Remedies, Inc.

Of his 23 years in the industry, Rob has worked in residential construction for 12 years, 5 years in commercial construction and the last 6 years he has been dedicated to remediation/abatement exclusively.

“Expansion into a new area can be a challenge for even the best of companies, but with Rob spearheading the delivery of ERI’s promises, I have all the confidence in the world ERI’s Sacramento branch will be a success,” Tamayo stated. “While ERI’s success is most certainly a team effort, I truly feel we’re putting our best foot forward with Rob as regional manager.

Rob Meyers may be reached at: [email protected], or his cell: 925-351-5172.
