Program

Part I.A Cappella Choir

My Spirit Sang All Day . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gerald Finzi(1901 - 1956)

My spirit sang all day O my joy. Nothing my tongue could say, Only My joy! My heart an echo caught O my joy, and spake, Tell me thy thought, Hide not thy joy. My eyes gan peer around, O my joy, What beauty hast thou found? Shew us thy joy. My jealous ears grew whist; O my joy, Music from heaven is’t, Sent for our joy? She also came and heard; O my joy, What, said she, is this word? What is thy joy? And I replied, O see, O my joy, ‘Tis thee, I cried, Thou art my joy.

Music for the Anglican Cathedral Beati Quorum Via . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Charles Villiers Stanford

(1852 - 1924) Sung in latin Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.

Open Thou Mine Eyes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John Rutter(1945)

Open thou mine eyes and I shall see; Incline my heart and I shall desire; Order my steps and I shall walkIn the ways of thy commandments. O Lord God, be thou to me a God and beside thee let there be none else, No other, naught else with thee. Vouchsafe to me to worship thee and serve thee According to thy commandments In truth of spirit, in reverence of body, in blessings of lips, in private and in public.

Magnificat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Charles Callahan(1951)

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour For He hath regarded the lowliness of His hand maiden. For behold, from hence forth, all generations shall call me blessed. For He that is mighty hath magnified me; And Holy, Holy is His name. And His mercy is on them that fear Him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with His arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away. He, rememb’ring His mercy hath holpen His servant Israel; as He promised to our fore fathers, Abraham, and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

Page 3: East Coast Tour A Cappella Choir - Mark BabcockA Cappella Choir East Coast Tour 2014 Mark Babcock, Conductor Kris De Wild, Accompanist ... Holy, Holy is His name. And His mercy is

With a Lily , from the Flower Songs . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Eric Whitacre (1970) With a lily in your hand I leave you, o my night love! Little widow of my single star I find you. Tamer of dark Butterflies! I keep along my way. After a thousand years are gone you’ll see me, O my night love! By the blue footpath, tamer of dark stars, I’ll make my way. Until the universe can fit inside my heart.

Neither Angels, Nor Demons, Nor Powers . . . . . . . . . . . . Timothy Takach(1978)

And I believe. So I Believe. I will lift my eyes to the hills. There, dost thou well believe, no storm should come. To mar the stillness of that angel-home; There should thy slumbers be weighed down with honey-dew, serenely blessed. And I believe. So I believe. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, neither angels, nor demons, nor powers, neither things present nor things to come, neither height nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God. I do believe. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Heilig . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847)

Sung in German Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Part II.Chamber Singers

Cantate Domino . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Hans Leo Hassler(1564 - 1612)

The Lamb . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John Tavener(1944 - 2013)

Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Gave thee life, and bid thee feed By the stream and o’er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, softest clothing, woolly, bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, making all the vales rejoice? Little Lamb, who made thee? Dost thou know who made thee? Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee, Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee: He is called by thy name, For he calls himself a Lamb. He is meek, and he is mild;He became a little child. I, a child, and thou a lamb, We are called by his name. Little Lamb, God bless thee! Little Lamb, God bless thee!

More Love . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Sid Davis(1916 - 2006)

Night and Day . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . arr. Jay Althouse(1951)

Night and day you are the one. Only you beneath the moon or under the sun. Whether near to me or far, it’s no matter darling where you are, I think of you day and night. Night and day, why is it so that this longing for you follows where ever I go? In the roaring traffic’s boom, in the silence of my lonely room, I think of you night and day. Day and night under the hide of me, there’s an oh such a hungry yearning inside of me. And this torment won’t be through, till you let me spend my life making love to you day and night, night and day.

City Called Heaven . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . arr. Josephine Poelinitz I am a poor pilgrim of sorrow, I’m left in this old wide world alone! Oh I ain’t got no hope got no hope for tomorrow. I’m trying to make it make heaven my home. Sometimes I’m tossed and I’m driven, Lord. Sometimes I just don’t know which way to turn. Oh I heard of a city, of a city called heaven. I’m trying to make it, make heaven my home.

Soon in the Morning . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . David Maddux(1954)

Soon in the morning I will rise, I will rise up in the morning. Weak in the flesh but strong in soul, I will rise up in the morning. Chariot come to take me away! Weep not forever, but always remember me. Tears in the night will be turned to joy in the morning! When I depart this house of pain, I will rise up in the morning. I can hear the trumpet of eternity blowin’ for me. Never fear; I gladly shed the wasting days and endless nights to greet the glorious light of lights, soon in the morning! I will mount up with wings of eagles!

He Never Failed Me Yet . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Robert Ray(1954)

I will sing of God’s mercy, every day, every hour, He gives me power. I will sing and give thanks to Thee for all the dangers, toils and snares That He has brought me out. He is my God and I’ll serve Him, No matter what the test. Trust and never doubt, Jesus will surely bring you out, He never failed me yet. I know God is able to deliver in time of storm. And I know that He’ll keep you Safe from all earthly harm. One day when my weary soul is at rest, I’m going home to be forever blessed. Didn’t my God deliver Moses from King Pharaoh? And didn’t He cool the fiery furnace For Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego? When I think of what my God can do, He delivered Daniel, I know He will deliver you.

Choosing CentralI chose Central because I wanted to do it all. I knew I wanted to play golf, but I did not want to pass up the opportunity to be a member of a choir. I didn’t have to at Central. Central has allowed me to be a member of the A Cappella Choir, play golf, as well as pursue and achieve all my academic goals in the classroom. I am able to do this because of the amazing professors who work with me on a daily basis encouraging personal success.

Favorite Choir MemoryMy favorite choir memory was the Brazil tour last spring. Not only is this my favorite because it was the trip of a lifetime, but I loved this trip because of all the amazing friendships that were formed and because of the music that was shared. Freshman year, prior to tour, I was very shy and reserved. Brazil helped me out of my shell. I really got to know many of the other choir members becoming friends with several of them as well. I also really enjoyed Brazil because it showed me that music is a universal language. We were able to communicate and move the audience even though we didn’t speaking the same language.

Our Mission“The A Cappella Choir combines the attributes of each

member to form a community that strives to create beauty and inspire others through the universal language

of music.”

The Central College A Cappella Choir has maintained a strong commitment to artistic choral excellence for eighty two years. As part of a liberal arts university education, it is comprised of 60 select, auditioned students from across academic disciplines with a desire to develop artistic vision and the creative aspects of education. They perform a variety of quality choral literature selected from a vast geographic and historic choral repertoire. In addition to inspiring the campus community, this prestigious choir performs regularly in churches, schools and concert halls across the Midwestern region of the United States. Every spring the choir embarks upon either an extended tour to major cities in America or an international tour. The choir is under the direction of Mark A. Babcock, the Farver Endowed Chair in Music and Director of Choral Activities at Central College.

Music at CentralBeing a part of two extraordinary choirs during my time at Central has been a major player in my overall college success. Having a choir of my friends to sing with through challenging times and to celebrate with through the good times has helped me create relationships and lasting memories. Traveling the United States and traveling to Brazil in 2013 has led me to connect with many choir members and audiences that no other organization on campus could offer me.

Liberal Arts CollegeA liberal arts college environment enables students to immerse themselves in opportunities available through a variety of academic disciplines. Personally, I have been able to experience classes in all departments on campus which has led me to be confident in my career decision. In addition, students at a liberal arts college have the ability to be involved in a variety of activities; for me, choir, public address announcing and volunteering as a youth basketball coach in town.
