Roger Boness, Mt Evelyn Father. Gentleman. Raconteur. Vietnam Veteran. Change agent. Widower.

Roger Boness is a stalwart of the community in Mt Evelyn, improving the wellbeing of older and retired RSL members, including being a first-responder in times of need.

Last year, he was recognised with the Veteran Community Award in the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards for his work with the veteran community.

Roger was conscripted for national service in 1966, and saw active service in Vietnam. Since then, he’s actively worked in his community to help veterans through his involvement with the Mt Evelyn RSL.

‘We’re a traditional subbranch. We consider ourselves an important part of the community. We don’t have any poker machines, so we have to find revenue through other means.’

Serving others is a theme that runs throughout Roger’s life. He was heavily involved in the union movement, where he went from being a carpenters’ representative, to becoming an Australian Workers Union organiser and later working for the Community and Public Sector Union.

When asked where he thinks this drive to help others comes from, Roger says without hesitation, ‘My mother. I’m just following her example. She was very active in the community.’

His secret to living a good life is to live with purpose. ‘Be organised. You’ve got to have an agenda. Get up in the morning knowing that you’ve got something to do. Stay active, and get out and do it.’

Moira Ryde, Pakenham Friend. Athlete. Enthusiast. Grandmother. Award winner. Swimmer. Navy wife. Traveller.

“I love it, I really love it,” Moira Ryde effuses when asked about life at Cardinia Water Retirement Village.

“It’s a great place to stay fit and active. There are plenty of activities to choose from; and we have a gym, a health club, a swimming pool and gardens.”

But Moira, 75, is often too busy in her role as a volunteer with Special Olympics Victoria, which is part of the Special Olympics Australia network that provides weekly sports training and regular competition for people with an intellectual disability.

Moira says she gets more from volunteering than she gives. “It keeps me active and engaged in the community, I’ve learned a lot of new skills and I’m often reminded of how much I have, of how lucky I am.”

Moira advises embracing the senior years as they can be “the best years of your life”. Whether it’s taking advantage of all the activities available through joining clubs or through volunteering, Moira says it’s vital to stay active and socially engaged and involved in the community.

“It’s so important that older people are physically active; the adage ‘use it or lose it’ is so true,” she says.

In 2016 Moira received a Premier’s Volunteer Champion award and in 2015 she received a Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation – Volunteer of the Year award.

Talgium Edwards, Thornbury Elder. Singer. Sailor. Stolen Generation. Trickster. Silver-tongued devil. Taungurung man. DJ. Talgium Edwards is a proud Taungurung man, an Elder in his community, and member of the Stolen Generation.

He and his five siblings were living with their mother on the banks of the Goulburn River near Shepperton when he was convicted of vagrancy and deemed a child in need of care. He was seven years old. He was taken away and placed in an orphanage in Ballarat. ‘My mother didn’t know where they took us. She found us in Ballarat in 1956.

Talgium has had a life of adventure, with time in the merchant navy sailing the world, as well as on container runs between Melbourne and Tasmania around the Australian coast. ‘I went ashore at Cape Town, I’ve seen apartheid. Crossed the equator, went to England and Europe.’

Music is an abiding love for Talgium, and he doesn’t need an excuse to break into the songs of storytellers like Tom Waits or Chris Kristofferson. He also works as DJ Talgium 2 Time on 3KND, Melbourne’s first Indigenous owned and managed radio station. You can hear him on 1503 AM on Fridays from 2 pm to 4 pm.

His secret to living a good life is staying close to family and community, and keeping fit and healthy.

‘I’m Stolen Generation,’ he says. ‘I haven’t ceded my sovereignty. I’m here by the grace of the Great Spirit to go out each day and do the best I can.’
