FIRST READING Peter raises Tabitha/Dorcas from the dead Acts 9:36-43

Luke writes:Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity.37At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laidher in a room upstairs. 38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request,“Please come to us without delay.”39So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him tothe room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showingtunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them.40Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened hereyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41He gave her his hand and helped herup. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive.42This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.43Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.

Word of God, word of life.a Thanks be to God.

PSALM MEDITATION“The Lord’s My Shepherd” arr. Hart Morris

SECOND READING A multitude sings before the Lamb Revelation 7:9-17

John writes:After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standingbefore the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branchesin their hands. 10They cried out in a loud voice, saying,

“Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and thefour living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne andworshiped God, 12singing,

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdomand thanksgiving and honorand power and mightbe to our God forever and ever!Amen.”

13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed inwhite, and where have they come from?” 14I said to him, “Sir, you are theone that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out ofthe great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in theblood of the Lamb.

15For this reason they are before the throne of God,and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.16They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat;17for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

Word of God, word of life.a Thanks be to God.

Dorcas was a faithful anddevoted woman of charity inthe community of Joppa. Her

kindness and her work withclothing was well-known,

especially to the widows intown. When she fell ill and

died, Peter raised her back tolife through thepower of prayer.

Christ is the shepherd wholeads his faithful to springs ofthe water of life. Christ is also

the lamb who vanquishes sinand suffering, in whose bloodthe saints have washed theirrobes and made them white.

The psalm meditation for bellsis an arrangement of the hymn

“The Lord’s My Shepherd”(ELW 778), a setting ofPsalm 23 the appointed

psalm for today.

The works that I do in my Father’s name testify tome; 26but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep.27My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. 28I give themeternal life, and they will never perish. WORSHIPLIFEGood Shepherd Sunday

“Good Shepherd Sunday” comes each year on the fourth Sunday ofEaster. This Sunday gets this nickname because the favorite image ofJesus as the Good Shepherd takes pride of place. Each year the appointedPsalm for this day is Psalm 23 – “The Lord is my shepherd…”

In our three year cycle of Sunday Bible readings the gospel of Johnunfolds this image in the readings: Year A includes the gospel story(John 10:1-10) where Jesus is called the “gate” of the sheep. (The MiddleEastern shepherd slept in the gateway of the sheepfold to protect thesheep.) Year B we read the next portion of John’s gospel (John 10:11-18)where Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd” who lays down his life forthe sheep. This year (Year C) the story continues (John 10:22-33) asJesus promises life to his sheep saying, “My sheep hear my voice. Iknow them and they follow me.”

The second reading also keeps the shepherd theme: Follow the shepherd, even in suffering (1 Peter 2:19-25), Jesus Christ laid down his life for us (1 John3:15-24) and A multitude sings before the Lamb (Revelation 7:9-17) Well, theimage flips from Jesus as shepherd to Jesus as lamb, but it’s close!

(You may have noticed that during the whole Easter season the firstreading comes not from the Old Testament as usual, but from the bookof Acts, as it unfolds the story of the early Christian community in themonths immediately following Jesus’ resurrection.)

Favorite and familiar shepherd hymns dominate our congregationalsong: The King of Love My Shepherd Is; Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us;Have No Fear, Little Flock; Shepherd Me, O God; to name a few.

At Central we often try to make this day a Holy Baptism festival makinguse of the comforting and welcoming image of Jesus, tender shepherd,at the font. Jesus cares for his sheep and tenderly lays down his life forthem. All belong to his sheepfold. Today is a good day to welcomethem in.

WORSHIPLIFE

Holy Baptism Festival Days

It’s a strange thing – to present your child to be drowned. In public. Togive your child away. In public. To say the future you can give themjust won’t do. In public. To say the family name they got from you is notenough. In public. To have your child bathed. In public. And dressed innew clothes. To have an infant turn its back on evil and turn insteadtoward the light. An infant?

And who do we think we are – anointing them with oil – like a king orqueen, like a prophet, like the messiah himself?

It’s an even stranger thing – when youth or adults present themselvesfor this ordeal.

Though deeply personal, baptism is never private. It is initiation intothe Christian community, the Body of Christ, the body of believers. It isan event, a celebration of the people of God. The individual candidate, the community of faith, and the Lord’s mission are forever affected bythis radical action of God and the assembly’s celebration of this sign ofGod’s grace.

On our baptism festival days we celebrate God’s saving activity inHoly Baptism. On baptism festival days we obey our Lord’s commandrecorded by Matthew: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the HolySpirit, teaching to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I amwith you always, to the close of the age. (Mt. 28:19-20)

Our baptism festival days allow us to celebrate baptism in such a waythat its centrality in our lives becomes clear to all. We seek to live outChrist’s command that we be a baptizing community. We seek tocelebrate baptism in such a way that the celebration is a true andcomplete sign of the things which baptism signifies, with abundantwater, generous actions, baptismal hymns. We seek to celebrate welland fully the saving activity of God.

And so as candidates come to the water and the word, let us gatherwith them around the life-giving waters of Holy Baptism. Our nextbaptism festivals are scheduled for May 25-26 (Holy Trinity) and June29-30 (Jesus says, “Follow me”), or most any Saturday at 5:30 p.m.Individuals or families with candidates of any age for baptism areinvited to contact the Church Office to be included.
