At that time while the disciples were talking, the risen Jesus himself stood among them. But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate before them. Then he said to them, "These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. ”

From the Rector’s Desk Greetings:

The Holy Eucharist is the primary service of the church. It is the sacrament to which we have recourse Sunday by Sunday and in the midweek Wednesday evening Mass here in our parish.

Growing up in my home parish; the mass was celebrated on a daily basis as it was done in may other parishes; however one would hardly find a daily mass in regular parish life today.

At times we look to scripture as we seek to find the origins of this most important liturgical rite which we carry out with great care and attention and after diligent planning so that we can offer the best that we can to almighty God.

Robert Cabie in Volume II of a book entitled “The Church at Prayer: An Introduction to the Liturgy - The Eucharist, raises the question: What happened at the last meal Jesus took with his disciples?

Cabié acknowledges that the early witnesses, meaning the synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark and Luke (John does not mention the Last Supper), have not left us a description of its origins and that Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians does not exactly give us a Eucharistic Rite, arguably there was no need.

Like most things origins are always difficult to trace. One thing seems certain that quite early in the Tradition christians came to accept the power and presence of our Lord when they shared an actually meal and that later this became the ritual meal which we share Sunday by Sunday and in the schedules masses during the week.

We can deduce from our celebration of the Holy Eucharist a basic spirituality that tel ls us how our l i v e s a r e b u i l d around this weekly celebration in which we are fed with the b r o k e n a n d resurrected Body of Christ.

The last meal shared w i th Jesus must h a v e m e a n t

tremendous confusion for the disciples; but it continued in their individual and collective memory and by the close of the 1st century was etched in the institutional memory of the merging christian church.

The disciples were devastated at the death of Jesus and were later comforted and encouraged by his presence that even after his crucifixion he continued in the power of resurrection to break the bread inviting them to participate in meal sharing.

What we have is a service that is taken very seriously by us and one in which we too experience the presence of the resurrected Christ in a real way.

CURRENT NEWS AND EVENTS The Church Mission Committee is sponsoring a panel discussion on the topic “Life and Death Issues: Medical Futility”. The panelists are Mr. Ivan Walters- Attorney at Law; Dr. Anne-Marie Hassell - Physician and Canon Noel Burke Rector of St. David’s Church and Tutor (Part-time) in Ethics and Citizenship at the Barbados Community College. It will be held in the St. Leonard’s Church on Tuesday April 21 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. All persons are invited.

HEALTH GUILD WALK The Health Guild walk will be held on Friday May 1, 2015 beginning at 5:30pm. The route:- Turn right at Living Waters, on to Fort George reservoir. Turn right at Dash Valley, right through South District up to Nazarene Church, turn right at Egerton and return to St. David.

Body image is the mental representation or internal picture we have of our physical body; an inner view of our outer selves. Our body image is strongly influenced by messages from family, friends, television, movies and other sectors of society. Do you have a positive or negative image of yourself? Did you look at the lady, who just sat in front of you and wished you had her hips? What about the gentleman in the choir? Do you wish that you were handsome like him? Pursuit of that ‘perfect’ body never leads to happiness. Here are some tips to help you learn to love your body:

- Change your self-talk. Follow your thoughts for 1 or 2 days. Be vigilant in hearing the types of messages that you repeat about your inner and outer self. Increase positive self- messages and decrease the negative ones.

- Develop affirmations that focus on a new attitude about your body. “I like my body when I eat the way it wants me to. I have attractive legs. I have nice arms.”

- If you are weighing yourself, throw out the scale! This metal object has been given too much power to determine how you feel on any given day.

- Ask yourself if you exercise for appearance or for fitness. If it is for appearance, you may want to assess how helpful this is to achieving a positive body image.

- Try not to compare yourself to models, actors, magazine photos. They search the world over for these faces and bodies and none of them are as they appear! Television makeup takes hours to apply, photography tricks and photo airbrushing eliminate lines, blemishing and pores. These people don’t even look this way in real life.

- Talk to a professional if negative body image is hurting you in your personal life, relationship or the workplace.
