Welcome to the 22nd annual Eastern Canada Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium (ECSEPS): An AASP

International Regional Conference! We are excited to be hosting ECSEPS 2018 in Montreal, Quebec on behalf

of McGill University. This esteemed conference provides students an opportunity to discover and share current

research being conducted in the fields of sport, exercise, and health psychology, and to create networks within

this research community.

ECSEPS is a graduate student run conference that brings together graduate and undergraduate students from

across Eastern Canada to present research on the various topics within sport and exercise psychology. Ever

since the first iteration of ECSEPS, hosted at the University of Ottawa in 1996, it has become a staple within

our community. This year, we are excited to not only have two amazing keynote speakers in Dr. Lise Gauvin

(Univeristé de Montréal) and Dr. Jean Côté (Queen’s University), but also an opening ceremony

commencement speech by our very own founder of ECSEPS, Dr. Nathalie Durand-Bush (University of Ottawa).

We have decided to bring a few new features to the conference this year. Notably, the pre-conference

welcome social on Thursday night at Midway Tavern will serve as a nice gathering to ease us into the

conference atmosphere. The conference, set to officially begin on Friday morning with an opening ceremony,

will feature four concurrent sessions for the first time as of a result of the elevated volume of abstract

submissions. This new feature will enable more students to present at ECSEPS than ever before. Finally, we are

employing Whova, a conference app primarily designed to facilitate the dissemination of information via your

smart phone! Doing so has allowed us to significantly reduce our environmental footprint, while also providing

you with a new platform for networking. We are excited for these new features and hope you all enjoy them

as well.

While you are in Montreal, make sure you take the time to visit McGill campus, a short walk from the Delta

Hotel, as well as the many other spectacular views and events available in Montreal. We also strongly

recommend hiking up Mont Royal to experience a breathtaking view overlooking the city.

We hope that you have an amazing experience at ECSEPS 2018 and that your networking experiences are

advantageous and rewarding. On behalf of the ECSEPS 2018 Organizing Committee and the Department of

Kinesiology and Physical Education of McGill University, we hope you have a wonderful ECSEPS 2018!

Sincerely,

The ECSEPS 2018 Organizing Committee

Dear ECSEPS Delegates,

On behalf of the Department and Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE), I would like to welcome you to the

22nd annual Eastern Canada Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium. McGill University and the Department

of Kinesiology and Physical Education is proud to be hosting one of the most respected student run conferences

in sport and exercise psychology. This year we have the pleasure of welcoming attendees from outside of

Canada and North America. We hope that you enjoy your time in Montreal and at McGill University.

The department is excited to be hosting this conference for the third time, as KPE students organized ECSEPS

in 2003 and 2010. This year, the conference will be hosted at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Montreal, which is

right next to the McGill campus. While you are here, make sure to take the time to explore the city and the

rest of the McGill University Campus. As well, the banquet will take place at Chateau L’Ambroisie and L’Espace

Canal, a lovely venue on the Lachine Canal just outside the downtown core.

KPE is particularly pleased to support the ECSEPS conference, which features two world-renowned keynote

speakers: Dr. Lise Gauvin and Dr. Jean Côté, in addition to Dr. Natalie Durand-Bush’s commencement speech.

Remarkably, the ECSEPS 2018 program includes a record breaking 165 student presentations across four

concurrent sessions, the most in ECSEPS history.

ECSEPS provides a unique experience for graduate and undergraduate students to present research proposals

and completed projects while being able to receive feedback from both colleagues and mentors. We are

excited to foster this tradition, while providing students, faculty, and other community members the

opportunity to interact and establish new networks.

I would like to thank the ECSEPS Organizing Committee for all the work they have done to put together what I

believe will be an excellent conference. I believe ECSEPS 2018 will be a success both academically and socially.

I would like to thank you all, on behalf of the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education of McGill

University, for attending the 22nd annual ECSEPS Conference. I hope you enjoy your time spent in Montreal.

All the best,

Julie

Opening Ceremony Commencement Speech: Friday March 23th, 2018

It is particularly fitting that Natalie Durand-Bush should be the one to give

the opening ceremony commencement speech given that she initiated

ECSEPS in 1996 as a student representative for the Association for Applied

Sport Psychology. Twenty-two years later, she still attends ECSEPS and

mentors her students to present at this annual symposium. Given her

contributions as founder of ECSEPS and her unwavering commitment to the

continued success of this student-led organization over the years, it is a

great pleasure to welcome her as the commencement speaker.

Dr. Natalie Durand-Bush is a full professor in the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada. She is also an adjunct professor in the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in Oslo, Norway. Her areas of interest and expertise include psychological skills training, coaching, and mental health and well-being. Through her sport psychology research and practice, she aims to understand self-regulation competencies underlying the development of optimal performance and well-being in different contexts including sport, medicine, the performing arts, and academia. Professor Durand-Bush also develops interventions and programs designed to help individuals and teams achieve performance excellence, and sustain self-care and mental health in this process. Her work as a Mental Performance Consultant with high performance and developmental level athletes and coaches over the past 23 years is intricately linked to her research and teaching.

In terms of notable accomplishments, Dr. Durand-Bush created the Ottawa Mental Skills Assessment Tool (OMSAT-3*©), an instrument translated in several languages to evaluate multiple mental skills necessary for consistent high-quality performance. Dr. Durand-Bush is also the co-founder of the Canadian Sport Psychology Association and has contributed to this organization as Chair, Review Committee Member, Treasurer, and Certification Committee Chair. Dr. Durand-Bush is proud to have served the International Society of Sport Psychology as Vice-President and Managing Council Member. She has maintained her affiliation with AASP over the years and now serves as an Executive Board member of this organization. Finally, Dr. Durand-Bush is thrilled to have recently co-founded the Canadian Centre for Mental Health in Sport, which will provide competitive athletes and coaches access to integrated and specialized mental health care services that will meet their unique needs.

Exercise Psychology Keynote Address: Friday March 23th, 2018

Lise Gauvin is Vice-Dean for Research at the School of Public Health of the Université de Montréal and Associate Scientific Director for Population Health Research at the Centre de recherche du Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM). She completed her doctoral work in physical activity sciences in 1985 at the Université de Montréal. In addition to her current academic position, she has held positions at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and Concordia University in Montreal, Québec. Between 2014 and 2016, she was a member of the Institute Advisory Board of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s (CIHR) Institute for Nutrition, Metabolism, and Diabetes and currently serves on the CIHR Institute Advisory Board of the Institute for Population and Public Health. In September 2015, she was named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Her research focuses on socio-environmental and individual determinants of involvement in physical activity, the reach, acceptability, and impact of interventions to promote physical activity and prevent eating disorders, and social inequalities in health. She uses innovative data collection and analysis techniques including real-time data capture, multilevel modeling, and natural experiments to gain new insights into intervention. In addition to publishing her work in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, Dr. Gauvin is actively engaged in knowledge-transfer and -exchange activities developed in partnership with researchers, policy-makers, and practitioners working in public health.
